A Catholic Commentary on Holy Scripture
Dr Halley published over 20 updates of the Handbook During the period of Pope Pius XII (1939-1958) Bible research was encouraged, especially in the study of literary forms. During this period new archaeological material from the near East has been evaluated. This new material has been incorporated into this book. This general introduction to the Bible brings together the results of studies and research on the subject. It collects Catholic thought and illustrates the Church's leadership on important Biblical questions. The first dictionary of Biblical archaeology to be made available to the Bible student. Included are articles that bring the life and customs of Bible times before the mind of the reader, e.g., Agriculture, Architecture, Funary Customs, and Marriage. The editorial committee labored for nine years to produce this commentary. Readers of the Bible will appreciate its value. New translations of Holy Scripture including a summary of the Apocrypha. Biblical learning must be integrated with traditional Christianity. Provides a critical survey of modern biblical knowledge from Catholic and non-Catholic alike, who accept the full doctrine of biblical inspiration.
