What We Do At FCA Interiors, we are trained professionals who specialize in understanding the relationship between scale, furnishings, and interior architectural elements. This expertise allows us to offer an additional perspective when interpreting the client’s vision and goals and enhance planning opportunities. We value strong relationships with clients, so we participate in project visioning sessions to develop cohesive designs aligned with facility missions. These sessions are essential to delivering exceptional design. Our experience in space planning and collaboration with medical planning teams enables us to deliver healthcare environments that are safe, functional, and that cater to the diverse range of user needs.

Our design approach is Human-Centered. We use our creative thinking and desire to solve problems to create healthcare environments that are respectful and therapeutic in nature, essential to healing the mind, body, and spirit. Health systems are a business and we know that Brand matters. We understand the impact of a first impression, and how the design of a space can impact how patients feel about their care and ultimately the brand. We look for ways to integrate design elements in a cohesive way that will promote your facility’s identity. Our attention to detail and thorough documentation, combined with a quality review process throughout each phase of the project provides a unified design that is coordinated, constructible, and will endure the heavy use of healthcare spaces. FCA’s skilled Interior Designers include state-licensed CID, NCIDQ, and Lean Six Sigma-certified professionals; plus EDAC, LEED, and Well AP accredited individuals who will listen to your concerns, guide you through the design process, and instill confidence in the decisions made. Design Fundamentals Patient Experience Our interior concepts are shaped by understanding the continuum of care for our clients. The final designs must create a positive experience for patients and caregivers while supporting the care being provided.

Emotional Process Mapping We can track users’ emotions at specific points throughout their journey to better understand how design can influence the human experience in a positive way.

Sensory Aesthetics Interior environments that implement evidence-based design and biophilic principles can impact patients and caregivers on physiological, psychological, and cognitive levels, supporting the treatment process.

Safe Spaces By working with EVS and Infection Risk assessment teams throughout the material and fixture selection process ensures that our designs align with hospital cleaning and safety protocols. The products we choose must be the right fit for each facility from both safety and aesthetic criteria.

Sustainable Interiors Our commitment to the planet compels us to make responsible material selections that balance sustainability and performance in a clinical setting. Creating spaces that support the health and wellness of the building and its occupants is central to our design philosophy.

Patient Populations Being empathetic to the needs and abilities of diverse patient populations allows us to create inclusive healthcare environments for all genders, races, and patient types. Healthcare Interiors

Our Sketchpad Each design is tailored to the unique needs of our clients. We believe in constant evaluation and evolution of our ideas, always striving for the best possible outcome. Our design strategies are developed with our clients’ goals in mind, and we continuously question whether our designs are relevant, functional, and capable of positively impacting those who will use the space. To bring our designs to life, we use a combination of loose sketches, 3D renderings, video walk-throughs, and carefully selected materials that align with our architectural and interior concepts. By working closely with our clients and being integrated into design teams from the beginning stages of programming through to construction administration, we can ask the right questions and ensure that our designs meet the highest standards.

A Calming Healing Environment Design Narrative: In collaboration with KRN Development, Pure Project Management and the Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Network, FCA created a forward-thinking rehabilitation hospital within a 12-acre medical village, nestled in the serene landscape of Center Valley, PA. The rehabilitation hospital acts as the campus 12

centerpiece, harmoniously combining modern design with a commitment to enhancing patient well-being. FCA played a multifaceted role in bringing the campus to life through comprehensive planning, design, and construction, working closely with Good Shepherd to implement the overarching strategy, repurpose existing facilities, and modernize the rehabilitation hospital. The firm was challenged with conceptualizing a cutting-edge healthcare facility, in addition to the accompanying site plan, optimizing both placement and circulation. The result was the construction of a progressive, four-story rehabilitation hospital, spanning over 124,000 square feet.

Rehabilitation Hospital The state-of-the-art facility substantially enhances Good Shepherd’s ability to cater to the needs of the local community, boasting 76 well-appointed private rooms. The updated space also features comprehensive on-site facilities and services, including a fully functional apartment (to practice daily activities), meditation chapel, imaging services, large therapy gyms with views of the surrounding countryside, and an outdoor therapy and activities garden. The hospital’s program stands as a testament to innovation and community alignment, with patient comfort and healing at the forefront of each decision. Deeply rooted in their relationship to nature and the surrounding environment, patient rooms offer breathtaking views of the facility’s natural surroundings, thoughtfully designed to prioritize connection with the outdoors. These considerations serve to enhance the healing process while providing patients with exceptional comfort and an inspiring atmosphere. Beyond prioritizing a connection with nature externally, the hospital’s design incorporates biophilic principles throughout the interiors, seamlessly integrating natural elements in tandem with art to promote wellness. This approach creates a calming healing environment, even in areas without direct outdoor views. The team tailored each floor’s design to cater to the specific requirements of its patients, including floor-specific color coding for improved wayfinding, an enhanced overall experience, and a more holistic sense of well-being.

“Empower+” Experience Center The hospital also houses the innovative “Empower+” Experience Center, providing a unique space for patients to engage with the latest technologies and services to augment their lives. This center includes a smart home hub, living in place resources, and adaptive gaming facilities, aimed at catering to patients’ post-stay rehabilitation. The center further enhances comfort levels for patients of all ages, assisting with the use of new technologies through the innovative application of virtual and augmented reality. The hospital’s ongoing collaboration with Moravian University has also bolstered its 3D printing capabilities, underscoring the project’s commitment to innovation through the customization of adaptive devices and 3D-printed prostheses tailored to individual patient needs.

With a bright aesthetic and open layout that promotes connectivity, the modernized hospital sets new standards in rehabilitation, and serves as a testament to Good Shepherd’s unwavering commitment to the wellbeing of the community. FCA’s innovative design has transformed the Center Valley Campus into a beacon of hope and healing, establishing new benchmarks for healthcare spaces and emphasizing the crucial role of design in the journey to recovery. DESIGNER SPOTLIGHT

Beverley Spencer Senior Associate CID, EDAC, CDT

YEARS OF EXPERIENCE 23 Years Experience WHY HC DESIGN? I grew up in England where most hospitals & clinics were old Victorian or Edwardian style buildings. The interiors were cold and sterile with fluorescent pendant lights hanging from their high ceilings and “hospital green” paint probably made from arsenic or lead, on most walls. Not exactly welcoming. I didn’t realize it, at that time, that an interior environment would have such an impact on me. When I began my career in HC interiors the focus on aesthetics was relatively new. There seemed to be fewer opportunities to be creative and material selections were somewhat limited, predominantly VCT and 20

paint which was not so different from the healthcare environments I was accustomed to growing up. I wasn’t completely convinced that healthcare design was for me. But after working on a variety of healthcare projects and having more interactions with clinical staff and patients, I realized how much the environment affected them also. And, that the financial and technical challenges within healthcare facilities provided endless design opportunities. Realizing that I could shape a person’s experience by changing their environment motivated me to do more. My passion for healthcare design has evolved because it has a defined objective to help people heal and to bring comfort to those who use the space. It’s purposeful, challenging and requires a truly collaborative and forward-thinking effort. A successful

HC interior has the power to heal and transform lives. Knowing that the work I do plays a role in this is incredibly rewarding. FAVORITE PART OF DESIGN That “aha” moment when a design suddenly comes together, and you know you’ve finally figured it out. It’s gratifying collaborating with a great team to get to this point, working together through challenges & differing opinions, to see a space transform from a simple sketch or idea, and evolve into a real functional space that works for the people that need it.

Before

After FAVORITE COLORS / PALETTE I love to play with color, pattern, and materials to find unexpected combinations that work well together.

HOBBIES / INTERESTS Swimming, yoga, and dancing are at the top of my list. I have always had a lot of physical energy, and these help me to burn off steam, relax and re focus. I genuinely believe in the mind and body connection and without them I feel off balance. And whenever I have an opportunity, I like to dig into my creative side and make things with my hands. Over the years I have enjoyed learning new techniques and exploring different mediums like weaving, pottery, and painting and more recently doing minor renovations around my apartment.
