WHY HC DESIGN?

Initially, healthcare chose me. I worked at a firm that created unique interiors for Advertising agencies, Law firms, large corporate headquarters. It was purchased by an Architectural Firm that focused on Healthcare Master Planning and detailed healthcare planning.

The designers brought our design approach to healthcare projects at a time when healthcare architecture’s focus was less focused on aesthetics. I found the work more fulfilling and interesting and is why I have continued working in the Healthcare sector.

The projects are complex with multiple stakeholders and different values, technical demands and layers of codes and policies. Over the 30 years, the focus on creating spaces that can make an impact on patient outcomes keeps me here. Hearing directly from patients and families the difference a before and after affect that a design has had on their experience at a hospital makes it worthwhile.

FAVORITE PART OF DESIGN

I love conversations with our younger designers. They bring new ideas and concepts to our work from a different perspective that make our projects interesting. I try and give them the freedom to create ideas and help guide them with the knowledge I’ve learned over the last 30 years.

FAVORITE COLORS / PALETTE

Any palette can be made beautiful, but it has to be the right balance. A subtle array of neutrals and textures with colors that are strategically used for emphasis is a favorite approach.

HOBBIES / INTERESTS

Pre-kids: renovating houses kept me busy. We did most of the work ourselves, teaching myself 3 coat plaster, brick pointing, glazing, framing, roofing. Working with my hands to be creative away from the computer.

As kids are older, I’m getting back to a less physical creative outlet of printmaking, but still working on renovation projects; pointing bricks and stone foundations at a much smaller scale.
