FCA’s skilled Interior Designers include state-licensed CID, NCIDQ, and Lean Six Sigma-certified professionals; plus EDAC, LEED, and Well AP accredited individuals who will listen to your concerns, guide you through the design process, and instill confidence in the decisions made.

Our Sketchpad Each design is tailored to the unique needs of our clients. We believe in constant evaluation and evolution of our ideas, always striving for the best possible outcome.

Our design strategies are developed with our clients’ goals in mind, and we continuously question whether our designs are relevant, functional, and capable of positively impacting those who will use the space.

To bring our designs to life, we use a combination of loose sketches, 3D renderings, video walk-throughs, and carefully selected materials that align with our architectural and interior concepts.

By working closely with our clients and being integrated into design teams from the beginning stages of programming through to construction administration, we can ask the right questions and ensure that our designs meet the highest standards.

Lobby Addition Design goals: •

Concept: The lobby and surrounding exterior of Newark Beth Israel are designed with a focus on light, brightness, and transparency, reflecting the high-quality comprehensive care, education, and standard of excellence that is provided at the hospital.

The design is authentic and uncomplicated, and it serves as an anchor that is identifiable from afar, inspiring confidence in the community it serves.

The new lobby is a luminous and transparent two-story structure designed to have a presence along Lyons Avenue that enhances the image of the medical center and overall guest experience. The space will accommodate public events such as book fairs, farmers’ markets, art shows, and community and holiday events.

Framed openings highlight points of arrival and a color changing feature spans the two floors, serving as a stage backdrop for a potential speaker. A staff huddle room, waiting area and balcony overlook the lobby below.

The South lobby, which is located below ground level, exposes large column footings throughout the space. These footings provided an opportunity to design planters with integrated bench seating that is clad with travertine and includes USB charging ports.

To ensure FCA captured the client’s vision our team facilitated multiple visioning sessions with key members of the Newark Beth Israel team. During these sessions, FCA used image boards with color-coded dots to identify preferences for relevant precedent design features such as signature design elements for public gatherings, mezzanine, registration, clinical, patient, and staff spaces.

Emergency Department Expansion The expansion of the emergency department involved the alteration of 10,900 sf of existing conditions and the conversion of the Interventional Radiology suite to expand the department and create a new front entrance, drop off zone, Fast Track area and Pediatric Department.

Directly beyond the new ED entry is a new reception and waiting areas for adults and children featuring customized banquette seating and decorative partitions that allow light to filter through the space while still providing a level of privacy for visitors.

Renovation of the emergency department included a redesign of clinical workstations to enhance visibility throughout the unit and sight lines to patients, improved wayfinding and consistency of branding.

The emergency department posed challenges due to the existing constraints of architecture, structure, and available space. Patient comfort was a priority, and to that end, indirect cove lighting around the core walls and decorative acrylic wall panels with integrated lighting were installed to highlight the treatment room entries and reduce the number of ceiling fixtures needed. This was done to prevent light from shining directly into patients eyes while being transferred on stretchers. Rubber flooring tiles were chosen to reduce noise, and each treatment area was fitted with custom headwalls and wall protection that was decorative yet trimmed with solid surface materials for durability.

Critical Care Unit The new 13-bed Critical Care Unit has been designed to create an open and welcoming environment. Similar to the Emergency Department, the corridors have recessed wall lights instead of overhead lighting. The finishes are both practical and therapeutic, with tonal floor accents that act as distance markers. These markers encourage patients to move around the floor and support prescribed amounts of movement, assisting in their treatment. The private patient rooms are spacious and offer a designated area for families. These areas have a spa-like feel and feature framed millwork, thoughtful accent lighting, a desk, and a glass-fronted mini refrigerator in VIP rooms.

Nurse stations with customized laminate ceiling and wall panels, and decorative pendant lights.

Each room layout is unique due to challenging existing conditions.

Patient room millwork was designed to conceal waste and soiled linen.

Markerboard glass on patient toilet doors is always visible to staff.

Safe & secure patient luggage storage in wardrobes.

Design element language from the lobby was brought into the design of footwall millwork – with laminate framed wall sconce surrounding a desk for families to work.

YEARS OF EXPERIENCE 31 Years Experience WHY HC DESIGN? Initially, healthcare chose me. I worked at a firm that created unique interiors for Advertising agencies, Law firms, large corporate headquarters. It was purchased by an Architectural Firm that focused on Healthcare Master Planning and detailed healthcare planning.

The designers brought our design approach to healthcare projects at a time when healthcare architecture’s focus was less focused on aesthetics. I found the work more fulfilling and interesting and is why I have continued working in the Healthcare sector.

The projects are complex with multiple stakeholders and different

values, technical demands and layers of codes and policies. Over the 30 years, the focus on creating spaces that can make an impact on patient outcomes keeps me here.

Hearing directly from patients and families the difference a before and after affect that a design has had on their experience at a hospital makes it worthwhile.

FAVORITE PART OF DESIGN I love conversations with our younger designers. They bring new ideas and concepts to our work from a different perspective that make our projects interesting. I try and give them the freedom to create ideas and help guide them with the knowledge I’ve learned over the last 30 years.

FAVORITE COLORS / PALETTE Any palette can be made beautiful, but it has to be the right balance. A subtle array of neutrals and textures with colors that are strategically used for emphasis is a favorite approach.

HOBBIES / INTERESTS Pre-kids: renovating houses kept me busy. We did most of the work ourselves, teaching myself 3 coat plaster, brick pointing, glazing, framing, roofing. Working with my hands to be creative away from the computer.

As kids are older, I’m getting back to a less physical creative outlet of printmaking, but still working on renovation projects; pointing bricks and stone foundations at a much smaller scale.

A sculptural wood fin elevator core is the focal point of this specialty care facility.

It’s wood fins organically span 2 floors through the entry lobby and waiting area. Natural light filters across perimeter corridors into exams and staff spaces.
