A MESSAGE FROM THE PASTORAL SEARCH COMMITTEE
We Found Our New Pastor! It was a day so glorious that even the weatherman celebrated. On a picture perfect February 7th, nestled somewhere between the elegant tones of the church bell choir’s “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring,” (itself the last selection of a stunningly beautiful morning of worshipful church music) and Pastor Shawn Zambrows’ invitation to “Go Fishing,” members of the First Baptist Church of Redlands must have acknowledged the twin pulls of being led and being blessed. It was a day inviting celebration, rejoicing, confirmation and closure to what was nearly a two year search for our next senior pastor. February 7th was the final day of Candidate Week, a series of days dedicated to exploring with the church community, in a host of different forums, the recommendation of the Senior Pastor Search Committee to call the Rev. Dr. Zambrows as our new Senior Pastor. In the Business Meeting immediately following Worship, called to process that recommendation, the congregation overwhelmingly and enthusiastically confirmed that call. And thus it is that the Rev. Dr. Zambrows will serve as the 16th senior pastor in the 130-year
history of The First Baptist Church of Redlands, succeeding Rev. Dr. Joe DeRoulhac’s 25-year ministry. Pastor Shawn will begin her pastorate on the 1st of May. Rev. Dr. Zambrows currently serves as the Pastor/Director of the American Baptist affiliated campus ministry at Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana, a position she has held since 1999. Prior to her move to Indiana, Dr. Zambrows served as the pastor of Temple Baptist Church in Los Angeles, and served on the campus ministry staff at the University of Southern California, a position she held for some 15 years. In recommending Dr. Zambrows to the church, the Search Committee noted with pleasure her long standing and diverse commitment to the American Baptist denomination, a record of contributions that brought strong recommendations to the Search Committee from respected church leaders across the country. Both she and her husband, Rod, have long shown
a strong commitment to mission work and work with children, youth and young adults, both locally and around the world. Her welcoming manner and inclusive theology seemed to be, for the First Baptist church community, both affirming and challenging. Both the committee and the congregation found themselves powerfully drawn to her warm, thoughtful, empathetic and caring manner. Dr. Zambrows earned her BA degree in Classical Civilizations from the University of California, Santa Barbara, her Master of Divinity Continued on Pg. 7

A MESSAGE FROM PASTOR RICHARD
Thank You and Congratulations! It does not seem possible that a little over a year and a half ago, I arrived to serve as your interim pastor. This has been my longest interim pastorate and what a joy it has been. I had always wanted to live in California and then here I was, in beautiful Redlands, California, serving in this special church with its beautiful building and fine programs. That was what impressed me at first but then as I got to know the church family I realized as fine as the building is and as impressive are the programs, it is the spirit of this church family that makes this place so special. That spirit, demonstrated by the commitment, concern, generosity and willingness of the church family to put action to the words of the church’s mission statement: “to share with our families, neighbors and friends the love of God made real to us in Jesus Christ and to be a vital force for divine goodness, truth and mercy in our community and around the world” was seen in every area of church life. I feel honored to be a part of this church community. Thank you for this privilege. Now you have called the person to whom God has led you to be your next pastor, Rev. Dr. Shawn Zambrows. Congratulations to the Pastoral Search Committee for their diligent work during the pastoral search. A ministry well done. From what I have heard about Pastor Shawn and from your excitement about her, I know that with the help of the Lord, fruitful and powerful days are ahead for the church. As the arrival of Pastor Shawn is eagerly awaited, may each one of us pray for her as she concludes her present ministry and makes the transition to begin her ministry here. Pray for yourself also, asking God what part He would have you play in collaboration with Pastor Shawn in growing the church and advancing the Kingdom of God. I will continue as your interim pastor until Sunday, April 3rd and though I will certainly miss you when I leave, I will continue to keep you in my prayers and will follow the ministry of you and Pastor Shawn with great expectation. Those Great Old Hymns By Richard W. Steffen, Minister of Music
During this season of Lent, as well as throughout the year, the words of “those great old hymns” can come to mind. As a child in my Methodist (now United Methodist) church in Indiana, we sang so many great hymns often during Sunday morning and evening services and midweek Bible Studies. It wasn’t long before those words were a part of my memory. And they became a guiding resource for me in many situations. Sung in no particular order, these songs can become a public statement of personal belief, or a quieting pathway to a private conversation with God. Those listed here with a number after the title appear in the hymnal in our sanctuary, a wonderful hymnal given to us by Doris Billings and Eleanor Fishman in the early 1990’s. (“Ask Ye What Great Thing I Know”: 224) Ask ye what great thing I know that delights and stirs me so? Jesus Christ, the Crucified. (“Rock of Ages, Cleft for Me”: 227) Rock of Ages, cleft for me, let me hide myself in thee; let the water and the blood, from thy wounded side which flowed, be of sin the double cure, save from wrath and make me pure. (“Sweet Hour of Prayer”: 623) Sweet hour of prayer (repeat), that calls me from a world of care, and bids me at my Father’s throne make all my wants and wishes known: in seasons of distress and grief my soul has often found relief, and oft escaped the tempter’s snare by thy return, sweet hour of prayer. (“What a Friend We Have in Jesus”: 622) What a friend we have in Jesus, all our sins and griefs to bear! What a privilege to carry everything to God in prayer!

O what peace we often forfeit, o what needless pain we bear, all because we do not carry everything to God in prayer! (“Open My Eyes”: 557) Open my eyes, that I may see glimpses of truth thou hast for me; place in my hands the wonderful key that shall unclasp and set me free. Silently now I wait for thee, ready, my God, thy will to see; open my eyes, illumine me, Spirit divine! (“O, How I Love Jesus”: 509) There is a name I love to hear, I love to sing its worth, it sounds like music in my ear, the sweetest name on earth. O, how I love Jesus (3 times) because he first loved me! (“Living for Jesus”: 569) Living for Jesus a life that is true, striving to please him in all that I do; yielding allegiance, glad hearted and free, this is the pathway of blessing for me. O Jesus, Lord and Savior, I give myself to thee, for thou, in thy atonement, didst give thyself for me; I own no other Master, my heart shall be thy throne; my life I give, hence forth to live, O Christ, for thee alone. (“I Love to Tell the Story”: 498) I love to tell the story of unseen things above, of Jesus and his glory, of Jesus and his love. I love to tell the story because I know ‘tis true; it satisfies my longings as nothing else can do. I love to tell the story, ‘twill be my theme in glory, to tell the old, old story of Jesus and his love. (“I Know Whom I Have Believed”: 493) I know not why God’s wondrous grace to me he hath made known, nor why, unworthy, Christ in love redeemed me for his own. But “I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I’ve committed unto him against that day.” (“In the Garden”: 242) I come to the garden alone, while the dew is still on the roses; and the voice I
hear, falling on my ear, the Son of God discloses. And he walks with me and he talks with me, and he tells me I am his own, and the joy we share, as we tarry there, none other has ever known. (“ ‘Are Ye Able,’ Said the Master”) “Are ye able,” said the Master, “to be crucified with Me?” “Yea,” the sturdy dreamers answered, “To the death we follow Thee:” “Lord, we are able” – our spirits are Thine; remold them – make us like Thee, divine: Thy guiding radiance above us shall be a beacon to God, to love and loyalty. (“The Old Rugged Cross”: 484) On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross, the emblem of suffering and shame; and I love that old cross, where the dearest and best for a world of lost sinners was slain. So I’ll cherish the old rugged cross, till my trophies at last I lay down; I will cling to the old rugged cross, and exchange it some day for a crown. (“He Lives”: 248) I serve a risen Savior, he’s in the world today; I know that he is living, whatever men may say; I see his hand of mercy, I hear his voice of cheer, and just the time I need him he’s always near. He lives, he lives, Christ Jesus lives today! He walks with me and talks with me along life’s narrow way, He lives, he lives, salvation to impart! You ask me how I know he lives, he lives within my heart! (And the gift that made it all possible: “Amazing Grace”: 502) Amazing grace! How sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me! I once was lost, but now am found, was blind but now I see. These songs, of course, aren’t intended to be sung only during Lent in worship. You can sing them all week – and all year – long.
Farewell Jared Sumners
For the past year and a half the middle and high schoolers of FBC have been led by our youth director, Jared Sumners. In this short time he has provided our youth with many opportunities to learn and grow in their faith. It is now that Jared has the opportunity to move on in his career goals. I invite you to read the letter below that Jared has given to the youth and their parents about his experience here at FBC and his decision to resign as youth director. Although we are saddened that he will no longer be working at FBC, we appreciate the work he has done and wish Jared and Kate all the best as they move on to this next chapter of their lives. Farewell Jared Sumners Dear Youth and families, This letter is to tell you of my resignation as youth director of First Baptist Redlands. I’m sad to be going, because I love you all so much. But I’m excited for what’s ahead, both for you and for me. My time here has been wonderful. I’ve had the opportunity to teach some of the brightest and most compassionate individuals around. We have a remarkable group of youth. As their leader for the past couple years, it has been my immense joy to watch them grow, to watch their opinions and beliefs become their own, and see their hearts draw nearer to God. These students are committed to following Jesus faithfully. They want to change the world. And they’re going to. Over the next two months I’ll transition from the role of director of this brigade of world-changers into the role of enthusiastic cheerleader, watching from the sidelines as they set out to make earth look more like heaven. As to why I’m leaving, the answer is simple. I have ignored the call to deeper study for long enough. God has made it clear to me, through the way He made me and through the incessant playing of my heartstrings, that I am to take on the academic world. I’ll be working towards
degrees in philosophical theology, and maybe one day, when our current youth are entering seminary (they’re all going to seminary, right?), I’ll be their teacher again. I wish I could stay at this wonderful church longer. You have all taught me so much about loyalty, the familial nature of the Body of Christ, friendship, and love. I’m leaving only because my school is in Orange County. No other reason. No scandal. No heartbreak. No hunchback in the belfry. (Or is there?) I’m simply called onward, and though I’ll miss you all, I’m excited for your futures. I’m excited for your next youth director. I’m excited for your next pastor. I’m excited for the things our youth will all achieve. I’m excited for you all to be floored by the powerful love of our God, and to be awestruck by what He can and will do through you. I leave February 28th this year. Until then let’s enjoy our time together. And know that I’ll never be too far away. I’ll come back at a moments notice. Just allow for traffic. Help will always be given at First Baptist to those who ask for it. Love,

Worldwide Prayer Concerns “But recall those earlier days when, after you had been enlightened, you endured a hard struggle with sufferings, sometimes being publicly exposed to abuse and persecution, and sometimes being partners with those so treated.” –Hebrews 10:32-33
Germany The following information came from Liz Laine’s son-in-law and gives a first-hand account of what is going on in Germany to respond to the ongoing flood of refugees fleeing ISIS and the Syrian civil war. “Churches in Germany are coming to the aid of refugees swarming in from the war torn areas of the Middle East. Munich is a staging area and from there refugees are placed in other German towns and cities. In Gruenstadt (a town in S.W. Germany) an old postal building has been converted into simple, modern apartments. Churches in the area are helping out with the moving process, finding good used furniture and finding Arabic and Farsi translators. Apartments are found for families but are often extremely crowded. Smugglers are taking advantage of the situation, charging many thousands of dollars to get people to Europe - way more than an airline ticket, which is not an option for most due to lack of paperwork. Some people have been held in a remote cabin for five days without food and only dirty water to drink while the smugglers try and extort more money from them. As we see on T.V., boats are overcrowded leading to many drownings.” Pray for the entire continent of Europe as it struggles to assimilate the more than a million refugees that have fled to it for safety. Pray that Christians can be at the forefront of the welcome.
Iran Praise God for the release of American Pastor Saeed Abedini after more than three years of imprisonment in Iran. We have been praying for his release and this is a long-awaited answer to those prayers! Abedini was arrested in 2012 during a trip to Iran to build an orphanage and charged with undermining national security. He spent extended periods of time in solitary confinement and endured many other torments during his time in prison. His release was part of a prisoner swap arranged in conjunction with the finalization of the nuclear deal with Iran. However, now that he is home, he faces the challenge of re-adjusting to daily life. Pray for Saeed and his wife Nagmeh, as well as their children, as they work to rebuild their lives together.
ABC Worldwide We recently heard about the project that Garrett Zambrows did upon graduation: riding his bicycle across the country to raise awareness and money to fight human trafficking. Pray for Garrett and the others in the ABC family who are fighting this global network that exploits and degrades other human beings: Mylinda Baits, Lauran Bethell, Kathy Charland, Annie and Jeff Dieselberg, Lori and Matt Mann, Debbie Mulneix, Terry and Tom Myers, Jonathan and Thelma Nambu, Jennifer Pedzinski, Rovaughna Richardson, Kit Ripley, and Karen Smith.

We Found Our New Pastor! Continued from Pg. 1 degree with an emphasis in Christian Formation and Discipleship from Fuller Theological Seminary, and her Doctor of Ministry degree with an emphasis in Spirituality, Leadership, Envisioning and Strategic Planning from Fuller Theological Seminary. She is also the recipient of an honorary Doctor of Divinity Degree from Ursinus College, in Pennsylvania. She is married to Rod Zambrows, a licensed chiropractor. Beyond his practice, Rod has a rich and varied work background including coaching track and field, and a wide array of church and community service related work both on the campus of Purdue and in Lafayette, Indiana churches. The Zambrows have two adult children, Garrett and Lindsey. In her letter to our congregation, Pastor Zambrows notes her long standing awareness of the works and people of our church dating back to the 1960s. When she learned of our church opening, and reflected on what she knew of us, she said to her husband Rod, “Now there is a church where I would like to be.� As we have come to know and love Pastor Shawn, we can appreciate the hospitality the church offered her and others so long ago, the meaningful example and mentoring over time offered by Pastors Wallace, DeRoulhac, and others. We, like Pastor Shawn look forward to our face-to-face encounters and working together in the months and years to follow.

April 3rd Goodbye Pastor Burke Please join us in honoring Pastor Richard Burke for a farewell luncheon on April 3, 2016 immediately following the service. Pastor Richard has been with us since August of 2014 and as soon as he joined our congregation it felt like he had been a part of our church family for quite some time. He has gone above and beyond truly embracing the ethos of Connect, Grow and Serve here at The First Baptist Church of Redlands. We have been blessed with an Interim Pastor that committed himself to stay until we found our Pastor. Join us for lunch to thank and honor a man who has blessed us with his devotional service to our congregation. In the time that Pastor Richard has served as Interim Pastor at FBCR he has

The Charlie Coggins Mandarin Grove By Pastor Richard D. Burke
Dr. Charles Coggins, a new member of our First Baptist Church Family was recently honored by Plymouth Village where he and his wife Irene reside, by having a Mandarin Orange Grove planted in his name. The grove was planted April, 2014 with the objective of establishing a small planting of a spectrum of trees that will eventually serve as a source of beauty in the form of flowers, developing fruitlets and mature fruit of variable sizes, textures and aromas that mature at different times during the mandarin season. Dr. Coggins or “Charlie” as he prefers to be called, is a world renowned plant physiologist who accomplished great things in the citrus industry. In fact, his research changed the entire citrus industry. He provided decades of leadership and service to the citrus and horticultural industries and to the Department of Botany and Plant Sciences in particular including the discovery of the benefits of “gibbing,” a practice that has enormous influence on the citrus industry in California and worldwide. It was while conducting research at UCR Dr. Coggins discovered that gibberellic acid (GA3) could be applied to citrus to delay biological aging and senescence, of the rind. He also found that this practice, called “gibbing” could produce fruit of superior quality extending the harvest window of certain varieties of oranges so that the fruit could then be in constant supply, steadying prices and industry income. Born in Cherryville, North Carolina, Charlie received his B.S. and M.S. degree in agronomy from North Carolina State College and his Ph.D. in plant physiology from the University of California at Davis. He then took a position in plant growth regulation at the University of California, Riverside. Charlie remained at UCR as a Professor and Chair of the Department of Botany and Plant Sciences for 37 years until retiring in 1994. He also served on many boards and councils over the years and continued to conduct research even into his retirement. He received many awards, including an award for excellence in science from the National Agri-Marketing Association and the citrus industry’s highest honor, the Albert G. Salter Memorial Award of 2003 by the California Citrus Quality Board for the single most economic and beneficial research of the last century. The award went on to say that his leadership, stewardship and integrity earned him a worldwide reputation as a pioneer researcher and spokesperson for the citrus growing community. Charlie has lectured in 25 counties and has served as mentor for many of the leading persons in the citrus industry. Charlie is a very humble man. To hear him tell it, he was just doing his job. However, those who know him, not only respect him greatly but are enriched by his warm, caring personality. When asked of what he is most proud, he will say it is his family. He married his wife, the former Sarah Irene Jones in March of 1951 and they were blessed with three sons, Charles Stephen, Bruce Allen and Roger William and with 4 grandchildren. Now we at FBCR are blessed to have them as part of our church family.

On Sunday, February 14th David and Marie Hamilton renewed their wedding vows in a ceremony following the morning Worship service. David and Marie were married on June 18, 1966. A beautiful reception was held at their home following the ceremony. For a second honeymoon, David and Marie left on a cruise a week later.

Often church family members have many talents that are not known by other church members. One of those members is Psychologist Dr. Josh Morgan, who recently received a nomination for his role as Leo Bloom in the Rialto Community Players production of The Producer by the Inland Theater League.

In addition to the activities introducing Pastor Shawn to the church family, a reception was held at the home of Herb and Dori Dominguez at Plymouth Village for the residents of Plymouth Village who are members here at FBCR.

Olivia Nichole, daughter of Nick and Melissa Mendoza Miller was dedicated on Sunday, February 28. She is the baby sister of Ashley, Ethan and Riley and granddaughter of Jose and Martha Mendoza.

The resident women and children in Deborah House ( ABC sponsored ) are COLD as the shelter home comes without a heating system. Missions commission is holding a new, or gently used, blanket collection. Please leave blankets in the cedar chest in the Narthex. Thank you for your support.
