Meanwhile, the believers who had been scattered during the persecution after Stephen’s death traveled as far as Phoenicia, Cyprus, and Antioch of Syria. They preached the word of God, but only to Jews. However, some of the believers who went to Antioch from Cyprus and Cyrene began preaching to the Gentiles about the Lord Jesus. The power of the Lord was with them, and a large number of these Gentiles believed and turned to the Lord. Acts 11:19-21

A couple weeks ago we talked about the church at Antioch as a part of our summer sermon series in the book of Acts. The church at Antioch becomes a model of “how to do church” in a multicultural, pluralistic society, like much of the Mediterranean world at the time. This church came out of people being displaced because of persecution. They adapted to all sorts of changes and differences and yet stayed true to the Good News of the Kingdom of God. As a result, the number and kinds of people who came to follow Jesus was beyond anyone’s imagination—except, maybe, God’s. Starting in March we have found it necessary to adapt to circumstances for which no one imagined or planned. We can look back now at the various experiences and resources that we already had that enabled us to quickly make changes. In many ways we have barely skipped a beat in certain aspects of our ministry. Our guiding motto as a church is “Connect, Grow, Serve” and we can see
