Fall Has Come

A Message from Pastor Shawn

Well, summer is over! Okay, it’s true that fall doesn’t officially start until the end of September, but for all practical purposes, summer is over. School has started, vacations are in the books, Labor Day is upon us. We can look back at the fun things we got to do this past summer: for me, vacation in Washington, D.C., and Virginia, ABC Mission Summit, visits from family and friends, watching “Singing in the Rain” (three times) at the Bowl… As a church we have had church picnic (when it rained), summer barbeques, New Testament personalities sermon series (with videos), Junior Disciples summer Sunday lessons, special book study group and Bible studies for adults, and being able to sleep in a little on Sunday morning before church.

We will be introducing some new options on the menu to accommodate various dietary needs. At 6:30 p.m. the kids will go off to their class so that parents can enjoy that cup of coffee and dessert in a little more peace. At 6:45 there will be all sorts of offerings for study, discussion, fellowship and fun, including Bible study, a video survey of the Gospels, a discussion/support group for parents of young children, a class for teens, a group going to Market Night or you can sit around the table and continue the conversations that got started at dinner. During the fall season there will be other options that will come available as well. At 7:45 p.m. there will be choir rehearsal. So many options! It’s designed for you to choose how much you would like to be involved.

THE TEACHERS ARE COMING – Ja Seng Brim has arrived and Brang Ying will be arriving any day now, from the Roberts School in Myanmar to study for their Master’s Degrees at the University of Redlands. We are going to be their church family for the next 18 months that they are here! There are many ways to participate in their educational endeavor. Check it out at our website (www.fbcredlands.org and follow the tabs for “Kachin Educational Partnership”) or talk with me or Jonathan Peske.

“FAITH WITHOUT FEAR” PODCAST – debuting this month – It’s like having our own talk radio show on the internet. Each episode will feature Pastor Nick and myself in conversation with someone from our church family about issues of faith and life. Our hope is that we will get the message out into the far (and near) reaches of the internet that faith does not have to be based in fear.

KICK OFF SUNDAY I September 8 – 8:45 a.m. – Fellowship Hall - We start with cinnamon rolls and it just gets better from there. Come celebrate a new season of Sunday morning classes and groups for all ages.

As we enter into this new fall season, we look forward to the traditions that we share and the new adventures that are before us. Mostly, we have many opportunities to grow in our relationship to Christ and as a church family. May we all be intentional about making time and space to connect, grow, and serve. Let us make every effort to be a church that is inviting to people in our local community and welcoming to all who come. May we look back at this season and say to ourselves, “We saw Jesus at work in and through us!”

Mercy Pastor Nick Quient “Great is your mercy, O Lord; give me life according to your justice” (NRSV) —Psalm 119:56

One of my favorite hymns of all time is Charles Wesley’s “And Can It Be That I Should Gain.” I remember hearing it sometime in the later months of 2015, perhaps in November or December. A professor at Fuller suggested it to our class as a nice bit of theological worship, and I looked up the song on the Internet and listened to it. And listened to it. And continued to listen to it. Each line is its own theological treatise and I do not doubt that many have long pondered Wesley’s words.

A word that keeps coming up to me when listening to the hymn is reflected in the Psalm above. “Great is your mercy, O Lord.” Mercy in the New Testament is the gratuitous display of divine benevolence—often reflected in the language of “grace.” The word in Greek suggests attributes like kindness, compassion, and generosity demonstrated toward those who are less fortunate. It reflects a moral attitude, a heart softened by God’s holy love.

He left His Father’s throne above, So free, so infinite His grace; Emptied Himself of all but love, And bled for Adam’s helpless race: ’Tis mercy all, immense and free; For, O my God, it found out me. ’Tis mercy all, immense and free; For, O my God, it found out me.

In today’s raging climate, I wonder what would happen if we adopted this posture. I wonder what would happen if we opted for and cultivated a culture of mercy, of generosity, of compassion and kindness toward others. It is easy to do so toward people that fit into our boxes and categories; it becomes a chore sometimes when we have to show mercy and kindness toward others who don’t fit in at all.

Yet, if we are to imitate Jesus and his life, then mercy becomes the standard operating procedure for those who claim the Spirit as their own.

And once we have cultivated that culture of mercy and love, then the Jesus-Life that we are called into becomes an imperative, a reality, a canvas with endless opportunities.

I am so thankful for the canvas offered by First Baptist Redlands, and I pray that the God of mercy would bless our church as we strive to transform the world together.

In summation, many of my fondest memories at First Baptist revolve around this song, especially when we sing it together in Sunday worship. I hope when you hear Wesley’s magisterial words on any given Sunday that you reflect upon the mercy of God and sing “Amazing love! how can it be/ That Thou, my God, shouldst die for me?”

May we approach the God of infinite mercy together with boldness and without fear.

Inspired by Summer, We Begin Again

We had such exciting music in worship this past summer. Participation Involving Many was my desire as I planned the music leadership for our summer Sundays: Father’s Day through Labor Day. We were so enriched by so many. We were inspired by the music of instruments (organ, piano, guitar, bass, mandolin, drums, flute, trumpet, and clarinet – and 14 of them at one time on August 18!). And our groups this summer gathered so many leaders: the Worship Ensemble, the Men’s Ensemble, The Group, the Young Group, the Women’s Ensemble, the Clarinet Ensemble, and the Children’s Ensemble. We heard singers as soloists, in duets, and in trios. And Ellie Huynh inspired us with her sign language presentation of “The Lord’s Prayer” as we listened to the musical selection “As It Is in Heaven”

But this summer brought a change: on nearly every Sunday the folks who provided the Special Music also led us in our congregational singing. Our music leaders on these Sundays blessed us by sharing music meaningful to them and by leading us as we sang together.

As we begin our fall schedule, we know that God is in our sanctuary waiting and ready to meet us before the first notes of the prelude. We gather together as we meet and praise the One True God.

In worship on August 25, we were led by our children and youth. As the culmination event of the Children’s Grand Gathering that weekend, we heard songs and scripture and new drums! Because of a gift from my mother, Wanda Steffen, the Ministry of Music has a new set of drums. These drums are a part of the Remo Rhythm Club series. Now the drums we have for our children are bongos, konga, floor tom, tambourine, and a Sound Shapes set. What a great way to have our children experience percussion instruments – and possibly encourage them to be future FBC Drum Circle members!

On Father’s Day this summer, we finished 1 year of how our Morning Worship on Sundays begins. And throughout the summer, we continued our style of using “worship frames.” Each Sunday this summer we worshipped together. During our prelude we gathered.

We sang after we’ve gathered. We were called to worship. We took important time to center, focus, and open ourselves to God’s voice as we sang several songs.

We prayed. And we found ourselves surrounded by God’s Holy Spirit.

What does Jesus say about taking care of others?

A Redlands woman named Meredith shared her story with us at the showing of the Artists Serving Humanity art in our chapel this past summer. She worked in prisons as a counselor and began to see an interest and need for the expression of art in the prisoners’ lives. She gathered the art and began a website and gallery visits to show the prisoners’ work. I asked her to suggest a focus area to create an opportunity for our children to share Christ’s love and concern. Our opportunity was to partner with an 80 year old man named Curtis who is incarcerated in Colorado. He entered the prison system when he was in his 40’s. He has remained adamant that he is not guilty. He says that he witnessed the crime and then stopped to help the victim and called the police. He was convicted anyway. As an artist he makes carrying cases. Meredith believed he would be so pleased if he could help in any way with the project. She said he does not want any payment for his packs but for them to be used to bless others. We put our heads together and thought that if we could sell our baked goods, we could buy supplies to fill them with shower items perhaps for a women’s shelter.

Jesus says to care for the prisoner. The children have learned to acknowledge an inmate’s humanity and worth, join in the mission of the Church and finally, bless others with needed supplies. We are so grateful for your generous support of the bake sale. Curtis has sent his carrying cases to us and we have filled the carrying cases with shower supplies during the Children’s Grand Gathering with proceeds from the sale. Enough was given to gift Curtis some money for his legal aid costs.

God’s generosity is boundless.

KICK - OFF SUNDAY I September 8th Sunday School Kick-Off is on Sunday September 8th. All ages will begin downstairs in the Fellowship Hall with a continental breakfast and an introduction to the Sunday school classes.

“STAR WORLDS” INTERGENERATIONAL GAME NIGHT COMING IN OCTOBER: The CE Commission will host the “Star Worlds” intergenerational game night on Thursday Night, October 10th. All the ages are invited to dress up to illustrate either Star Wars or Star Trek. The children attending Bible Exploration time on Thursdays will be learning from the curriculum “Star Worlds”.

congo www.internationalministries.org Ann and Bill Clemmer, two of our missionaries in the Democratic Republic of Congo, are asking for prayers as they watch the deadly Ebola virus spread in their region. This time, the outbreak is in the middle of a war zone, so it’s difficult to get help to those infected. Additionally, many people don’t trust the health workers who are trying to help them, so they are resisting vaccinations, quarantines, and safe burial practices.

Clinics have been looted and burned. Health care workers have been attacked, and even killed, for their efforts. Bill shared that just last week, an ambulance that was sent to a nearby home to pick up an Ebola victim was stopped and set on fire before two of the attendants were beaten into a coma by the mob. Pray for God to give a new spirit to these communities and miraculously rebuild the trust needed to combat this disease. Pray for Bill, Ann, and other trained workers to have continued patience despite these circumstances that can leave them feeling scared and exasperated.

phillipines This August, some of us had the chance to meet members of the group Companion with the Poor, which plants churches in the slums of Manila. These churches offer holistic ministries that include food, education, and health programs in addition to sharing the good news of Christ. Pray for Floripin Encomio and the other missionaries as they seek to plant dozens of new churches this year.

myanmar/bangladesh World Vision World Vision recently profiled the plight of the Rohingya people, many of whom have fled Myanmar and are in a large refugee camp in Bangladesh. The Rohingya are legally denied citizenship in Myanmar--even if they are born there--so they are one of the world’s largest groups of stateless people. They are subject to all kinds of legal restrictions in Myanmar: sometimes even as to how many children they are allowed to have. Though they have some measure of safety and freedom in neighboring Bangladesh, they are still restricted to living within the refugee camp and they are not allowed to work or go to school outside the camp. World Vision is working inside these camps--bringing in needed supplies, offering work inside the camp, and creating a place where the children can learn. Pray for these people, and others around the world who are in refugee camps--that they would someday be free to build new lives that can fulfill the vision God has for their lives.

The First Baptist Church of Redlands is honored and excited to partner with Lanna Coffee Co. to provide our fellowship gatherings with one of the highest quality, pesticide free, freshly roasted coffees in the world with a remarkable story of hope, faith, and love.

Everyone entering our sanctuary most likely has passed the portrait of Mike and Becky Mann’s family in our church Narthex. For close to 20 years, our congregation has been praying for their family and ministry. Mike and Becky have visited our church sharing about their lives, their mission and Lanna Coffee.

Through the simple act of serving Lanna Coffee, we join the Mann family and the thousands of families across the globe in enjoying great coffee with a redeeming purpose. Lanna Coffee is involved with more than just producing exceptional coffee. They have committed to extending Christ’s love, helping alleviate poverty, providing clean water and promoting public health. Every year, teams from churches to corporations, such as Starbucks, commit to serve on building projects in northern Thailand. Not only are Lanna’s coffee farmers no longer living in poverty, their villages in remote areas now have access to nearby medical clinics, safe community centers, and children can attend the village schools that are built as a result of Lanna Coffee’s social responsibility initiatives. As more are enjoying their coffee, more farming families are invited to meet the demands. In 2018, 200 metric tons (440,924 lbs.) of coffee beans were harvested. The bulk of this coffee is shipped domestically and internationally to Bon Coffee, Lanna Coffee Co and Starbucks. In 2018, Lanna Coffee procured 36 metric tons (79,366 lbs.) to roast at their USA headquarters in Fresno, California.

Lanna Coffee’s story can be traced back to the year 1958. Mike’s parents, missionaries Richard and Marlene Mann from The American Baptist Foreign Mission Society (now International Ministries) were called to Thailand to find profitable crops that could replace the growing demand for opium poppies. Richard’s education in agronomy and Agricultural Extension Education, their calling to share the Gospel of Christ, and unyielding love for people wove a perfect tapestry and established the Mann family as Thailand’s coffee pioneers.

Richard was then hired in 1972 by the United Nations to help the UN Program for Drug Abuse Control (UNPDAC) in the soon-to-be implemented THAI/UN Crop Replacement and Community Development Project (CRCDP). In addition to strawberries, cabbages, and legumes, he found coffee to be the ideal crop to grow in the northern hills of Thailand. Grown in Chiang Mai Province’s rich volcanic soil roughly at 3,280 feet, the Private Reserve Grade A Catimor green coffee beans are shade grown in the perfect combination of elevation, rainfall, climate, soil, and terrain to produce a smooth, low-acidic coffee with a natural sweetness.

In 1991, Richard’s son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Becky, further expanded the mission and started Integrated Tribal Development Program (ITDP) to offer holistic and sustainable development that helps hill tribe farmers rise out of poverty. To date, 35 villages are enjoying clean water, latrines, cash crops, and are farming pesticide free coffee. Mike, Becky, and eldest son Richard labor alongside the 400 farming families to ensure that they are properly supported, trained, empowered, paid farm direct, earn close to double Fair Trade standards and able to experience the Good News lived out by Christians seeking to extend God’s love to the nations.

Interview with LIZ LAINE

If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask it of God who gives to all generously and without reproaching, and it will be given him.

Her favorite Bible story is of the Feeding of the Five Thousand (Matt. 14:13-21) where Jesus took a little and multiplied it to meet the needs of all. She says she can’t choose a favorite hymn because it’s usually the newest one we’ve used in our worship service.

Liz Laine was born in the town of Caterham, Surrey, England which is about twenty-five miles south of London.

She grew up there and attended Oxted Grammar School, about half an hour’s bus ride from her home town. At seventeen, she completed “O” Levels in six subjects (this equaled high school graduation in the US). She wanted to become a nurse, so she enrolled in a four year program at St. Mary’s Hospital in London where she graduated as a State Registered Nurse (like an RN License in the US) and then completed a six-month midwifery course after which she took a job in Bermuda. There, she met her husband, who was a pilot in the United States Air Force.

They went back to her home village to be married in 1964.

She went to Omaha, Nebraska with him when he received a permanent change of station. Liz has two brothers and a sister. Philip was a missionary surgeon in North East Congo. Peter ran a Yacht Charter business. And Jackie has a Pharmacological PhD and is currently tutoring math and chemistry.

Her first memory of church was that the pews were hard.

Her more pleasant memory is of a local greengrocer (read fruit and vegetable salesman) passing around oranges to all the children at Christmas. She reminds us that this was a real treat in post-war England.

Liz and Dick came to Southern California when he took a Physician’s Assistant job in the newly built VA hospital in Loma Linda. They ended up at Redlands First Baptist because it was a friendly, welcoming church and because she felt a fit with the teachings of the church.

Liz says she began to take Christ seriously after attending a Billy Graham Crusade in London in the 1950s. Her favorite Bible verse is James 1:5:

Liz says that one of the clearest times God provided for her and opened a way for her to serve happened in 2000. She says she had always felt grateful for the free training she had received in her nursing program. In that year, FBCR (our church) received a visit from the Dean of Nursing in Managua, Nicaragua. Then being a nurse practitioner, she was encouraged to spend two weeks working in their “free” clinics there. She protested that she spoke only English and was told they would find a bilingual student nurse to be her interpreter. However, she arrived in January during the school’s summer vacation and all these grand plans fell apart.

After all those arrangements and all that travel Liz was not going to just go home. So, the school put her to work in the OB-GYN clinic where she had experience conducting exams in Spanish. On her first day, her first patient turned out to be a Nicaraguan woman who had lived in the U.S. and was now married to a Nicaraguan. She was at the clinic for a pregnancy test. She was delighted when Liz proposed she act as an interpreter for her in the larger clinic setting. The only administrative bump they had to overcome was that the Dean who had brought her to Managua had no money to pay a professional translator.

The woman agreed to let Liz pay her at a reduced rate.

This meant that Liz could work “almost normally” as she put it.

Because it was Summer Vacation, the clinic was only open in the morning. Knowing that a large percentage of the population were children, Liz had taken some balloons to make animal shapes and face paint to amuse the children. She soon had an audience and so began a Vacation Bible School in Spanish in an abandoned basketball court next to her lodging. She was able to draw on her experience as a Sunday School teacher knowing how to teach Bible truths through games.

She says the experience taught her never to question God’s leading. She has looked on the world’s obstacles as God’s challenges ever since.
