On March 6 we enter into the season of Lent. Lent is a time when we reflect on our need for God. It is often a time when we practice spiritual disciplines that open space in our lives for this reflection about what God has done for us through Jesus and where we are in our relationship to God. We have chosen the theme, “Hope Springs Forth.” It brings up images of fresh water that is there to quench our thirst, new life springing up in the dry wilderness, candle light in the darkness or dawn’s light after a long dark night. All of these are images that help to describe times in our lives when we struggle with disappointment, distraction, dryness and even that dark night of the soul. As we make space for God in our lives during times like this we begin to see that flicker of hope. We trust that hope will eventually spring forth in our lives once again. Lent is the season that reminds us of these times in our lives.

This season our church family will be sharing with one another devotions and meditations to help us in our thoughts and prayers. We are thankful for people sharing out of their lives so that we all can be enriched. I hope that you will take advantage of these meditations either in their printed form or electronically. In your conversations with others, share what has been meaningful to you as you read and pray, guided by these devotional thoughts.

As we move toward Holy Week we will be inviting people in our congregation, as well as people in the greater Redlands community, to share works of art for a show that we will have during that week. Submissions can be paintings, sculpture, photography, stained glass, textile, etc., which the artist feels expresses an aspect of the theme, “Hope Springs Forth.”

Artists need not be “professional.”

On Thursday nights during Lent, the adults will remain in Fellowship Hall after dinner to reflect, discuss and share on Lenten themes through scripture, poetry and visuals. Each week the poem that is discussed on Thursday will be read on Sunday in worship as part of our Lenten meditation.

Whether you participate in this Lenten Season by submitting written meditations or works of art or simply by enjoying and allowing those expressions to touch your heart and life, I pray that we will all draw close to Jesus during this time. I pray that the Spirit of God will be at work in us, bringing us together in a new and special way as the people of God and as a church family. May we all experience “Hope Springing Forth” in our lives this season of Lent.

The Lamb Who Would Be Pastor Nick Quient

“The next day John the Baptist saw Jesus walking toward him and announced, “Here is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!”

John 1:29 NQT proclamation that Jesus is not the roaring and thundering conqueror. Like all of our expectations about who God is, Jesus does not conform easily to them. The Lamb, the object of sacrifice and meekness according to the First Testament, is the active agent in destroying and removing sin from all of humanity. In taking our sin with him to the cross, Jesus made a display of triumph over the powers (Col 2:14-16), canceling the debt and anguish that were ours for so long. In essence, Jesus purifies us. He makes us new.

The Gospel of John—perhaps the subject of a future Bible study—is one of the more unique and fascinating pieces of literature we have in the New Testament. Specifically, I memorized this verse when I was a child. I would memorize it every week just so I could recite it from memory and get a reward. So I cannot think about the Gospel of John without also having to tame a masterful craving for pretzels and bubble gum: not at the same time, of course. The Gospel of John represents to me an albatross: something that flies high above all of us and it takes us some time to discern its flight patterns.

This verse is no exception. The Greek word for “takes away” is airō.

This word can refer to “taking up,” or “raising,” “bearing,” “lifting,” “removing,” and in some instances “destroying” or “killing.” It is a complicated word that is most often glossed over and I passed it by numerous times before I stopped and read it again. It is a unique word, but John the Baptist is precise with it: Jesus, the Lamb, destroys sin.

All of creation is implicated in this cosmic display of benevolence on the part of the Lamb. Jesus is not merely the God of Baptists, Methodists, or Lutherans. God is the God of the living, the one who beckons by the Holy Spirit. John the Baptist’s announcement is akin to declaring the kingship of Jesus, as he comes not in the form of a king, but as a lamb. The Divine reversal of what people expected is continual and dynamic, forever surprising us with what God is doing.

God is on the move, moving to remove our sins and set us free. This purification came at a great cost, but Jesus triumphed over this present age, offering us the gift of life and love.

When we then look up at the albatross, clothed in the sun and the clouds, we may recall where God has surprised us, empowered us, changed and challenged us. Let us be ever mindful of what God is doing—not only for our sakes but for the whole world.

The Lamb of God, the one who “destroys” our sin. The Lamb of God, the one who “removes” our sin from us. This messiah is not content to simply remove our sins and sufferings from our lives, but this messiah undoes all of it. John’s announcement is centered on the 3

Amazing Love!

Richard W. Steffen, Minister of Music I learn so much from questions: pondering their meanings and being receptive for their answers.

“How could we sing the Lord’s song in a foreign land?”

(Psalm 137:4 NRSV) “Did you not know that I must be in my Father’s house?”

(Luke 2:49 NRSV) And here is one of my own, which I have asked every Lenten Season since beginning my work of leading music in worship in the fall of 1973: “Should we sing songs that inspire us to prepare, reflect, and repent on Sundays during the Lenten Season when we know the rest of the story: the resurrection of Jesus?” Oh, yes! Every Sunday throughout the year is a celebration of the resurrection!

On UMC.org, we read: “During Lent, we enter into a season of preparation, self-reflection and repentance when we seek to literally ‘turn around’ and realign our lives and focus toward God. By doing so, we seek to live and love as more faithful disciples of Jesus Christ.”

Growing up in the Methodist Church and then serving as music director in two United Methodist churches after college, I enjoyed singing the hymns of the Wesleys. Charles Wesley (1703-1788), was the great hymn-writer of the Wesley family.

He was the youngest son and 18th child of the family, and his older brother John (1707–1791) was a minister, theologian, and evangelist. Charles wrote the texts for over 6,500 hymns, and from them over 600 continued to be used. Their faith community at Oxford was called “Methodist” by the other students because of the way they used “rule” and “method” to go about their religious activities. Now Charles did not write the music for his hymns: he wrote the lyrics. He worked with composers in England to match the tunes appropriately with his words. Other tunes were used including German chorales, classical and popular melodies, and new psalm tunes.

The founding of the Colony of Georgia in 1732 inspired the Wesley brothers to go to the New World, since the colony was based on a need for a refuge for Protestants being persecuted elsewhere. It was the last of the original colonies to be established. James Oglethorpe, a general in the British army who founded the colony, asked John and Charles to go to Georgia and continue their work in ministry. [And it was Roger Williams, a religious separatist, who left England in 1630 and founded Providence, Rhode Island, and cofounded the colony of Rhode Island. He was also one of the founders of the Baptist church in America. He held that every individual should be free to follow his own convictions in religious matters.] The Wesleys set sail from England in late 1735 on the four month long trip. A storm came up. While the Englishmen were crying, a group of Moravians calmly sang hymns and prayed. After reaching Savannah, John was appointed as the minister of British colonists there. Charles was the General’s secretary and chaplain at Frederica. Four months after his arrival in Georgia, Charles left to return to England after becoming ill.

After being back at Oxford for two years, Charles opened his Bible one day to Psalm 40:3 (KJV): “He hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the Lord.” In 1739, the Wesleys published Hymns and Sacred Poems, which included 50 hymns written by Charles. That volume included “Christ the Lord is Risen Today” and “Hark the Herald Angels Sing.”

The following year he published another by the same name which included “Christ! Whose Glory Fills the Skies,” which we have sung in worship twice already this year, and “O! for a Thousand Tongues to Sing.”

In 1738 Charles had indeed received “a new song,” and that year he wrote “And Can It Be?” It is a powerful hymn rejoicing in the freedom to be found in Christ. And the first two words of the chorus of this hymn became the title of this article. In our hymnal as in many, the chorus of all the stanzas is the last two lines of stanza one. But it is part of stanza 3 that grabs my attention, especially during this Lenten season: “He left his Father’s throne above, so free, so infinite his grace; ‘tis mercy all, immense and free. Amazing love! How can it be that thou, my God, shouldst die for me?”

Grace and mercy: similar but different. “Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.” (Hebrews 4:16 NRSV) We will sing “And Can It Be?” this month in worship.

We come before you at this time, our hearts overflowing. We thank you for your kindness and your love demonstrated to us in your Son. We pray that we would be faithful participants in being loving and kind to others. Give us the desire to be a people filled with reconciliation and joy, to share the good news of your love.

We pray for the church during this time, particularly the women and men who have been abused by various churches and denominations. We pray that they would experience renewal and justice.

We pray for healing and integrity. We pray that your Holy Spirit would not depart from those who are in need of comfort. Loving God, give us a spirit of rectification and love, where we would burn for righteousness and peace. Let us be moved by what moves you, wounded by what wounds you. We give our hearts to you Jesus, declaring that you are the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the church, and the sins of the whole world. Give us peace. Give us the presence to be present when our brothers and sisters are mourning. Give us the wisdom to be silent, to be still, to sit with those who have been wounded and victimized by the church.

Loving God, it often feels as if there is no justice in this world.

Remind us, again and again, of your faithfulness and steadfast love for us. Create in us a heart for your work. As the church of Jesus Christ, may we never falter in being a people of action, a people dedicated to the work you have prepared for us. Break our hearts for what breaks yours. Forgive us our sins of complicity and ignorance, and grant us the courage to make things right.

Loving God, we need you. Now, more than ever. We love you.

We worship you. We pray for your Spirit to be upon us. All of us.

An International Prayer for Peace (Adapted from the Upanishads by Satish Kumar) Lead me from death to life, from falsehood to truth.

Lead me from despair to hope, from fear to trust.

Lead me from hate to love, from war to peace.

Let peace fill our heart, our world, our universe.

C HILDR E N’S MINI S T RY

Days Past

Present days

The parents and interested adults gathered in Judson Hall the last Sunday of January. We brain stormed six topics as we moved around the room recording our ideas on large white paper: Sundays, Thursdays, Music, Evangelism, Service Projects and Summer Programming. Many helpful ideas were the out- come including a God’s Kids fun monthly singa-long time with Audrey (a newer friend of FBCR and a long term music teacher.

Children’s Thursday Nights Bible Exploration (Ages 4 through 5th grade)

During Thursday’s evening “Bible Explorataions” time, before settling down for our lesson, we have been challenged to perfect the “Pastor Nick’s jump rope method.” Noelle and Robert can imitate him very well.

Future Past As we journey towards the season of Lent and Easter we will break in and out from our regular Thursday Bible study curriculum to learn about these special events in the life of the Church.

Pastor Cheryl is collecting academic teaching posters in Spanish to take to Puerto Rico: math, science, health, literacy, maps (must include Puerto Rico) and teaching calendars. Posters are light and roll up easily. Teaching posters can be found in Dollar stores, Target, Staples, Office Depot, Lakeshore Learning and CM School Supplies. The cost of posters is usually under $5.00. The FBCR team takes off to Puerto Rico Saturday, March 23rd and returns Sunday, March 31.

Asia Bibi

Please continue to pray for Asia Bibi, who has been suffering for nearly a decade after being falsely accused under Pakistan’s blasphemy law. In January 2019, she was again acquitted by the Supreme Court of Pakistan. However, while she has been released from prison, she is still being prevented from leaving the country, and is effectively under house arrest. She is with her husband, is being fed, and able to use the telephone, but she is kept in a locked room and not allowed to leave. The government claims this is for her safety, since there are still death threats against her. Her daughters have been granted asylum in Canada, and she desperately wants to join them, but the government of Pakistan has not allowed her to emigrate. Pray that her legal victory would result in her receiving true justice and that she would be allowed to leave the country to begin a new life in Canada.

Pray for her daughters, who also miss their mother.

BBC news reports Pray for the humanitarian crisis in Venezuela. Inflation in 2018 was over 1 million percent, with prices doubling about every 19 days. Millions of Venezuelans are struggling to buy basic food, toiletries, and medicine. The crisis has grown so bad that other nations are offering humanitarian aid, but as of the beginning of February, the Maduro government had blocked bridges into the country from Columbia in order to keep aid out. Pray for critical food and resources to get to the people who need it most and for the government of Venezuela to enact new policies that will help its people.

Emails from missionaries Praise God for the peaceful transfer of power that took place in the Congo. Despite many election irregularities that led to court challenges, in the end, long time leader Joseph Kabila did step down and one of the opposition party leaders was installed as president.

According to Ed Noyes, most people were happy to see some change happening in the government and didn’t want to see further upheaval. The wife of Ed Noyes, Miriam Noyes, is the sister of our friend Rita Chapman, who is married to Glen. The Noyes ask for prayers for their agricultural work, as they are helping farmers improve the local agriculture and training literacy teachers. Pray also for the ABC missionaries retreat and that the month of February will have been a time of encouragement for them.

In last month’s Tapestry there was an article summarizing Jonathan’s presentation at the annual meeting about how we can reach our challenge to increase our Faith Offerings by $70,000. I too believe that this an achievable goal. I challenge each of you to calculate your giving percentage for 2018 and prayerfully consider increasing that percentage for 2019.

So, you have faithfully supported God’s ministry at The First Baptist Church of Redlands during your lifetime and want to be sure that it continues into the future. What can you do? Include The First Baptist Church of Redlands in your estate planning.

This is an easy thing to do. If you have a trust (which all of you should have) you can leave a set dollar amount, a percentage of your total estate, or a specific asset such as your home to The First Baptist Church of Redlands. Some people are unable to give as much as they would like to during their lifetime, but are able to make a significant contribution upon their death.

The bible teaches us that we should tithe to the church. A tithe is 10% of your total income. Although I don’t know how much anyone in the congregation gives, or how much their income is, I am fairly certain that very few members tithe. Studies have shown that the average Christian today gives less than 3% of their income to the church.

If we assume that members of our congregation are giving on average 3% of their income as a general offering, then the income of our congregation is roughly $13,713,000. Five percent of that income is $685,650! This is far more than the $513,800 approved by the congregation at the annual meeting.

Think of what we could do with that amount of income. We certainly would not have a problem paying our staff what they are worth.

Again, I ask that each of you compute the percentage you gave in 2018. This will be easy to do as you prepare your income tax return for 2018. Once you know that percentage prayerfully consider the percentage that is right for you to give in 2019.

A gift through your estate can be unrestricted, leaving it up to the current leadership to decide how to use the funds, restricted for a specific project or ministry, or restricted as an endowment so that the principal is never spent, but the income generated from investing the gift can be used for any purpose or for a specific purpose.

The First Baptist Church of Redlands has been blessed with several such gifts. When Joe DeRoulhac came to FBCR the church had no endowments. At the end of 2018, the church had nearly $1.6 million dollars in combined endowments and bequests set aside by church leadership to be treated like an endowment. The earnings from some of these funds are used for specific purposes and the earnings from approximately $1.1 million of these funds is currently being used to support the church budget. In 2018, these funds covered just over $60,000 of our operating expenses.

M i l l e r - Tr a y h e r n S c h o l a r s h i p

Selection Criteria:

Applications for the Miller-Trayhern Scholarship are now being accepted. Applications are available in the church office or on the FBC Redlands website.

The following are criteria for selection in order of priority.

The Miller-Trayhern Scholarship Fund was founded in 1969 by donations from the family of the late Phyllis Miller and Dr. Ward S. Miller. The Fund may be used for those pursuing an undergraduate degree or a post-graduate degree.

Undergraduates may be attending a two-year community college or a four year college or university. Applicants may be in any year of their degree program this coming Fall term and it is not necessary that they be associated with The First Baptist Church of Redlands or a Baptist denomination. This scholarship is intended for applicants who have demonstrated their Christian commitment through active participation in/ or service to the church of which they have been a member; demonstrated serious regard for their academic studies, and demonstrated financial need. Preference is given to applicants’ with interest in Christian ministry or church-related vocation.

1. Awards are restricted to those typically 28 years of age or younger who have demonstrated their Christian commitment through active participation in and/or service to the church.

2. Preference will be given to those who have exhibited a serious regard for their studies as demonstrated in their scholastic record during the previous academic year.

3. Preference will be given to applicants who have been actively involved at the First Baptist Church of Redlands.

4. Finally, among applicants equally qualified in the foregoing respects, preference will be given to those applicants indicating an interest in Christian ministry or a church-related vocation.

INTERVIEW WITH

Nathan Jones

Nathan was born at the Kaiser Hospital in Fontana, CA. His family moved to Redlands when he was two years old. He grew up in Redlands and went to Kingsbury Elementary School, Moore Middle School and REV High School. He has an older brother and two younger brothers: Brandon, Evan, and Corin. They are either finishing their undergraduate work or pursuing graduate studies.

He met Jesica during high school in Spanish 3. She was a junior and he was a senior repeating the class because he failed to turn in his homework and his teacher refused to give him a passing grade the previous term on the basis of his test scores alone. He says that failing that class was one of the best things that ever happened to him. He and Jesica dated for about ten years before getting married here at Redlands First Baptist Church.

One of Nathan’s earliest memories of church is running up the steps on his way to Sunday School. He also remembers the patience of those who taught him in those early years – especially Liz Lane, Muriel Wagner, Bruce Laycook, Hien Huynh, and Pastor Joe DeRoulhac.

He says he does not remember a time when he did not take God seriously because he grew up watching men like Austin Lewis, George Riday, and Bruce Laycook take Him seriously.

He learned that faith can be paired with humor and that this humor can lead to valuable insights.

While he was away at college, Nathan attended many other churches. He grew to have a deep appreciation of FBCR where he had always found respect for education, depth of thought and experience, and soul liberty. When he and Jesica decided to have children they knew that they wanted them to be part of a church that respects the contributions of all people, encourages its members to think for themselves, and expects people to take responsibility for finding their own way to God’s truth.

Nathan’s favorite Bible verse is: Trust in the LORD with all your heart; don’t rely on your own intelligence. Know him in all your paths and he will keep your ways straight. Proverbs 3:5-6.

He says he finds it both a galling challenge and a comfort.

His favorite Bible character is linked to the fact that his mother wanted to name him Nathanial. He has always felt drawn to the story in John (1:44-50) where the future disciple asks, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” and Jesus responds by telling him he is “indeed an Israelite without guile.”

“Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing” has been one of Nathan’s favorite songs since a youth church camp. He found that an updated version of the hymn awoke him to the idea that one could take the best aspects of the traditional church and bring something new to its interpretation.

Thousand Pines Camp in Crestline was always a “thin place” for him. He distinctly remembers his last trip when he visited favorite spots saying goodbye. The experience of losing access to this place that had been so special still grieves him and reminds him how division and obstinacy among religious leaders can have important negative effects on the littlest and “least” among us.

Our church will be sending a Mission Team to Puerto Rico from March 23-31, 2019. We will be working within the broader effort organized by the American Baptist Home Mission Societies and the local American Baptist Churches USA region in Puerto Rico, Iglesias Bautistas de Puerto Rico. We have been overwhelmed by the generosity of our church, which has given more than $9,000 in support of this mission effort!

We look forward to enjoying a Puerto Rican meal with you on Sunday, March 10 after the worship service where we will share good food, prayer for our team and for Puerto Rico, and a final celebratory opportunity to give to the rebuilding efforts before we depart. We can’t thank you enough for your generous support in the form of financial gifts, e-waste, encouragement, and especially for your prayers!
