True Love A Message from Pastor Shawn

There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear; for fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not reached perfection in love. We love because he first loved us.

(1 John 4:18-19)

It is February and our thoughts turn to love. Recently, I have been watching “Once Upon a Time” on Netflix.

It was a television show for several years that wove together many stories of fairy tale and mythological characters, often in very complicated ways. One of the recurring predicaments was that someone was given a sleeping spell (beginning with Sleeping Beauty) and “true love’s kiss” was required to wake the person under the spell. Often the “true love” was not who was expected, challenging the notion that “true love” is limited to the romantic idea of a prince coming to rescue the princess of his dreams.

Love is at the center of the Gospel message. Love is what makes it “good news!” God loves us and sent Jesus to live with us and show us how to live in God’s Kingdom. Jesus gives us life through his death and resurrection. We have seen perfect love in action Jesus. Unfortunately, many hear a message of fear and call it Christian faith. There is fear of science, fear of art, fear of differing ideas and opinions, fear of asking questions. This gets magnified with fear of that which is different or people who are different. There is fear of loss and fear is used to keep people dependent on material wealth. Scripture tells us that there is no fear in love. In fact, perfect love casts out fear. We are empowered to love with the realization that God loved us first and so we are able to love. “Perfect” in scripture means “complete,” “total,” “mature.” A love that is still filled with fear is at best shallow.

I am afraid that more and more people are hearing less and less the good news of love that we find in Jesus as we live in a world that tries to control us with fear.

We as Christians need to show a better way, the way of perfect love. I pray that we as a church, will proclaim that message of love through Jesus to the world around us. Let us consider ways that we can act with boldness, in perfect love, to cast out the fear that is all around us, starting in our own hearts and lives and in the way we treat each other.

Unspeakable Kindness

“So that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his gift in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.”

I had a conversation with a friend a few days ago and he made a rather striking off-hand comment: “I am not convinced it is natural to be kind.” By saying this, he did not think it was wrong to be kind—heaven forbid— but rather he was uncertain about how natural an act of kindness was in our world. The conversation shifted to more important topics like the Maple Leafs recent losing streak (that team tests my sanctification daily) but his one comment stuck with me. When I also consider the character of God revealed in Jesus Christ the questions abound further. But I think, as with all of Christian theology, we should begin with the risen Lord as our guide. After all, Jesus “is the image of the unseen God” (Col 1:15).

The theme of God’s kindness is woven throughout Scripture in a multitude of ways and images. In some ways, kindness speaks to benevolent activity from a person of higher status toward a person of less social status. In other instances, kindness is paired with other concepts and ideas like when Paul advocates that we clothe ourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience (Col 3:12). For us and for our church, the kindness we offer to others is not merely an offer of gentleness or benevolence—it is an embodied expression of what it means to love God and to love one another.

In Paul’s words in Ephesians 2:7, we see what is at the heart of the Gospel: the “immeasurable riches of his gift (or favor) in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.” To put it more specifically, Jesus is the currency by which we know how God’s economy operates. How does God’s kingdom work? It works on the basis of kindness in Christ, demonstrated in Jesus’ living ministry—then and especially now. If one turns on the news or reads the paper one is almost assaulted with images of unkindness and cruelty. Our mission as the church of Jesus Christ is to model—as best as we can—kindness toward others. This does not mean flattening out our differences. It means that we show deference and generosity toward others despite our differences.

Jesus, when he on the cross dying for the sins of the world was not thinking, “This is only for the Baptists or people who agree on certain things within Baptist churches.” Far from it!

At a time in the ancient world when poverty was the reality, the fact that Paul chooses such economically loaded language like “riches” and “gift” reveals that the currency of the world is bankrupt and hollow. What matters to God is the demonstration of the heart and mind of Christ in the hands and hearts of those who act with justice and mercy and kindness. Let that be our prayer and our goal as the church of Jesus Christ.

The currency of heaven is God’s divine kindness and love that drives us into repentance and relationship with him (Rom 2:4).

Paul the Apostle (c. 5-c. 64) It will soon be St. Valentine’s Day, and we will see and hear the word “love” very often: on candy hearts, in cards, and in texts.

And we sing about “love” in worship. Here are titles of special music, spirituals songs, and hymns that are about “love” that we sing together. They may be among your favorite worship songs.

His Love How Deep the Father’s Love for Us I Love to Tell the Story Jesu, Jesu, Fill Us with Your Love Jesus Loves Me, This I Know Living He Loved Me (Glorious Day) Love Divine, All Loves Excelling My Jesus, I Love Thee O the Deep, Deep Love of Jesus The Gift of Love Stuart Townend has written several modern worship songs including the very well-known “In Christ Alone.” But the song “How Deep the Father’s Love for Us” holds special meaning for him. Upon hearing the song for the first time, many think it is old, as it sounds more like a classic hymn than a modern praise song. At a conference, a couple was shocked to learn that the writer of such an old-fashioned song was still alive! Townend says that in 1995 he had been considering the cross, “in

particular what it cost the Father to give up his beloved Son to a torturous death on a cross.” But Townend had a feeling from the beginning that he was going to write a hymn instead of a more modern-sounding song. He had written many contemporary songs, but he just felt like his next song needed to be a hymn.

In this one, he states that the melody came right away, but it took some time to adapt his lyrics to fit this simple melody. He admits that writing a hymn isn’t the norm today in modern songwriting. In an online interview with him, S4W.com asks Townend what he thinks about the style of modern worship: “The danger now is that we are so focused on the experience in our worship. It can become self-seeking and self-serving.

When all of our songs are about how we feel and what we need, we’re missing the point. There is a wonderful, omnipotent God who deserves our highest praise, and how we feel about it is in many ways irrelevant! I want to encourage the expression of joy, passion and adoration, but I want those things to be the by-product of focusing on God – I don’t want them to become the subject matter. I’m trying to write songs that refer to us as little as possible, and to Him as much as possible!”

How deep the Father’s love for us, How vast beyond all measure, That He should give His only Son To make a wretch His treasure.

How great the pain of searing loss – The Father turns His face away, As wounds which mar the Chosen One Bring many sons to glory.

Why should I gain from His reward?

Ah, that deep love of God: “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life” (John 3:16 NRSV).

Syrian Clementine Liturgy

We come before you at this time with open hands and open hearts. We thank you for what you have done for us in Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit—things seen and things unseen.

Precious God who offers us kindness and mercy, we pray for justice in these times. We pray that your kindness and gentleness would break down the dividing wall of hostility that has captivated us. We pray for our students and our teachers as they continue the journey of education and discipleship. We thank you for the gifted women and men who offer their lives to others in the service of empowerment and the building up of the heart and mind.

We pray for those who are sick and infirmed and we ask that your Holy Spirit would comfort them during these times. We ask that you would bring consolation to those whose bodies are stricken by illness and age—we pray that you would show mercy and love to those who have forgotten your tender care and your touch. Loving God, you know what it is like to be stricken, to be sick, comfort us during this time.

Loving God, we pray for justice in this time. We pray that all of the wrongs would be made right and that your kingdom—a kingdom of peace and kindness and holiness—would settle across the world, bringing all of your desires to pass. For those in holding pens, for those without homes, for those who are afflicted with depression and mental illness, to those who have been deeply wronged, show them your kindness. Beckon them into your holy presence and give them new life by your Spirit.

We pray especially for those who are grieving. A few moments ago, a friend in Kansas City called me in tears to tell me he had lost his job due to a minor theological difference with a missionary organization. As we all know, acts of unkindness are often devastating to those who are in need and are called by God. We pray for him and his wife as they mourn and we pray that the Holy Spirit would guide them through this time. Loving God, we pray for righteousness in our land and peace to reign among us. Give us your peace so that we might show the peace and love of Christ to all.

As John Wesley prayed: O God, seeing as there is in Christ Jesus an infinite fullness of all that we can want or desire, May we all receive from him, grace upon grace; grace to pardon our sins, and subdue our iniquities; to justify our persons and to sanctify our souls; and to complete that holy change, that renewal of our hearts, Which will enable us to be transformed into the blessed image in which you created us.

O make us all acceptable to be partakers of the inheritance of your saints in light.

Amen.

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

C HILDR E N’S MINI S T RY days past

present days

Luminary bags had been put out surrounding the water fountain on Christmas Eve to light the way to the candlelight service. When I exited the Church that evening there were shining LED light sscattered among the grass blades in the darkness where our Church patio light illumination ended.

I noticed that the bags were nicely folded and a couple of preschool boys were standing nearby. I turned to Allison Quient and commented: “What a perfect way to illustrate bringing the light of the Christ child into a dark world.”

Children’s Thursday Nights Bible Exploration (Ages 4 through 5th)

In January we bundled up with coats and even a blanket as we huddled outside around the fire pit for our Junior Disciple Wintery Campfire event.

Made it inside before the rains came and explored the Church’s puppets and if that could develop into a possible ministry. The old time game of “Spoons” ended our evening together. It was an opportunity to share common memories and build bonds of friendship. They are already talking about a springtime campfire.

Bible Exploration is exploring Bible Lessons made clear through Board Games.

The leader of our toddler group, Kathy Alexander, is suspending the Wednesday play group on account of accepting a full time substitute teaching job. When someone is available to coordinate the group, we will let you know. She will continue to be a major part of our God’s Kids Sunday team and Bible Exploration partner. Voice of the Martyrs Pray for Christians in Lebanon who have started a Bible club for Syrian refugee families.

There are age appropriate study activities for children and adults, and the Muslim families have been receptive to the things they have been learning out of the Bible. Praise God for the work of the Spirit among those who are fleeing the strife in Syria. Pray that Christians would continue to extend God’s grace toward them.

thailand

www.internationalministries.org Kit Ripley works in the New Life Center in Thailand, which ministers to survivors of sexual abuse. In late 2018, the center had to move from the property where they had been renting at below market rates for twenty years because the owner had sold it. The staff was anxious about where they would find another location at a price they could afford. But God led them to a newer building that is owned by a Christian organization and is across the street from a local church. Praise God for his continued provision for the New Life Center and pray for both the staff and residents of the ministry.

www.internationalministries.org and various news reports Pray for the ministry of Kathy and Tim Rice, who are working as medical missionaries in the Congo. They work at the Vanga Evangelical Hospital, which treats more than 13,000 patients each year. They share their training and experience with the Congolese doctors and nurses who work there to raise up health care professionals who can care for patients in the love of Christ. Pray that care and medicine would make it to the patients in Congo who need it most. Pray also for the uncertain political situation right now in the Congo.

The former president, Joseph Kabila, who used his position of power to personally enrich himself, and put off elections for several years, finally agreed to hold elections in late 2018. But the election results are disputed, and two rival opposition leaders are both claiming victory. Pray that there would be a fair process that both sides can support and that the people of Congo can experience a peaceful transfer of power.

The story of this trip begins back in October, when if you told me I would be leading a team of 8 to serve Haitian migrants in Tijuana I might have said you were crazy. Back in October as many of you remember Deliris and Moise, came to visit us here at FBC from Deborah House in Mexico. After the lovely Puerto Rico Fundraiser Tea in the Chapel, I was about ready to sneak out the door when Barbi Carpenter (my dear mother) grabbed me and said “I have to introduce you to Moise, they need dental care for Haitian migrants in Tijuana.” Because of the faithful relationship our church has had with Deborah House, we could build upon the trust that already exists to take this next step of service. We simply followed the example of all those who have gone before us in this church serving in Mexico, locally, and around the world without fear and with great generosity. We have watched this church truly be the hands and feet of Jesus and we need to be that now more than ever.

On November 9, Dr. Kyle Leis and I spent the day with Moise and Deliris at the Baptist Church in Tijuana, screening patients and getting a few out of pain. We realized the need was huge and that we needed several dentists, assistants, and people to interpret French and Spanish.

We set a date for our first official clinic of Jan 5 and 6. The miracles began as I asked people to come with us and everyone was able and available and each played a critical role on the team. Dr. Bethany Kronberg and Dr. Leis, who speaks Spanish and French. Dr. Zegar is an endodontist and was able to save teeth that would normally be pulled; Claude, who set up the equipment, also speaks French and was vital in communicating with the Haitians. Antonio who works at the VA and is originally from Tijuana, fluent in Spanish and an amazing assistant. Scott Medlin and Colby Estey (members of our congregation) who got trained on the job to sterilize, assist, clean instruments, develop X-rays and do whatever it took to care for our neighbors in Tijuana.

And of course Dr. Mark Carpenter, who could not go with us but spent the entire day after we got back sterilizing and reorganizing all of our instruments.

We experienced miraculous border crossings both into and out of Mexico. No inspections of the equipment we had tightly packed into the back of my truck, waved right in and we were on our way. Our plan was to treat the Haitian community all day Saturday, break down the clinic and move it to Deborah House to treat the women and children on Sunday.

As we were treating our patients Saturday, it was suggested that if possible could the women and children be transported from Deborah House to the church for treatment. There was concern about the tearing down and resetting up the clinic with the rainy weather. The women and children arrived at the church around 5 and patiently waited for us to finish treatment on the Haitian patients. We finished our day caring for the wonderful women and children, and had the equipment cleaned and packed up by 10:45 p.m. It was a long but amazing day! When we arrived at Deborah House at 11 p.m. we were told that the electricity was out due to the rain and would be out the following day. Another miracle, if we had not transported the moms and kids to the church we would have not had the electricity to set up the clinic on Sunday to care for them.

Our next clinic is planned for March 30, and we are planning to go every three months. I am excited to see our relationship with Deborah House and now the Haitian community continue to expand and grow. We are looking forward to having this be a part of our church life as we all continue to strive together to bring real, tangible, hope and healing to our brothers and sisters regardless of walls, doors, and sometimes our fear of the unknown. Together we can effect change if we continue to listen and respond to the call of God even when it seems daunting.

Baby Shark

One of the things that my husband and I have appreciated about this church is the way that children are included in all aspects of ministry. As I was preparing to go on this trip, we wanted to find a way to connect our kids so that instead of it being about mom leaving, it would be about what we can do as a family to show God’s love to people in need.

Erin suggested having my kids pick craft supplies for us to bring to the children living at Deborah house. (If you know Erin, you know craft supplies are her love language).

So, we went to the dollar store and collected crayons and colored pencils and notebooks. And also shark stickers. The shark stickers came with the added bonus of prompting our girls, Meg and Ruth, to sing “Baby Shark”… again and again and again as they packed up the craft supplies into little treat baggies. In the morning, I left with the dental team for Tijuana with Deliris and Moise and held our dental clinic. The kids were so cute tearing into their craft supplies as they waited for their turn for dental care.

The next morning some of the women from Deborah House helped Deliris to prepare breakfast for us. The kids were there playing with their crayons and stickers, and it made me so happy to see them enjoying their small gift. Erin’s love language, as it turns out, is multilingual. As I sat down to eat, I heard a familiar sound from one little girl nearby as she pulled out her stickers....“baaaaby shark do doo do do!”

Later, on the ride home the silly song about the shark brought to mind some powerful words written by Warsan Shire, a British-Somali poet who wrote about the plight of the refugee. I want to share a portion of her poem, Home, with you.

No one leaves home unless home is the mouth of a shark. you only run for the border when you see the whole city running as well. your neighbours running faster than you, the boy you went to school with who kissed you dizzy behind the old tin factory is holding a gun bigger than his body, you only leave home when home won’t let you stay. no one would leave home unless home chased you, fire under feet, hot blood in your belly.... i want to go home, but home is the mouth of a shark home is the barrel of the gun and no one would leave home unless home chased you to the shore unless home tells you to leave what you could not behind, even if it was human. no one leaves home until home is a damp voice in your ear saying leave, run now, i don’t know what i’ve become, but I know anywhere is safer than here.

I struggle often with feeling powerless and hopeless in a world so full of hurt. This trip was a reminder that even if we can’t fix it all, we all have the power to help a few people a little. What an honor and a blessing it is to do anything at all, even if only for a day, to help people, for whom home, perhaps resembles the mouth of a shark.

Deliris, in describing this trip, wrote “This is only a glimpse of what God’s people can do when we are UNITED!” And the truth is, God is powerful enough to do it with or without us, but when we connect with those who care for others every day, we can overcome the hopelessness that can lead to apathy and inaction. So, thank YOU, Redlands First Baptist Church, for providing the connections--through your rich history of service to God and to those, like Deliris and Moise, serving God throughout the world, to make this trip a reality.

At our Annual Meeting, we as a congregation accepted the challenge to increase our top line “Faith Offerings” giving by $70,000 in 2019. This is a very achievable goal for us, but it will require everyone to pitch in. Here are a few questions to ponder and pray about: 1) When I think about giving to the church, what do I get most excited about? Supporting our staff? Supporting our programs?

Supporting our local outreach work?

Supporting our global servants who are sharing Christ’s love all around the world?

2) How much did I give to the church last month? Was that a deliberate decision?

3) Does the amount I give to the church, in the context of my overall income and spending, show that the church is a priority in my life? Would someone who saw only my finances recognize that?

4) 75 years ago, at the 1944 Annual Meeting, this congregation agreed to raise $20,000 each year for 5 years to build our current sanctuary. ($20,000 in 1944 is equivalent to over $250,000 today.) How does their example challenge and inspire me to give today?
