Telling Stories A Message from Pastor Shawn So when someone asks, “What is the gospel?” the best response is, “Let me tell you a story.” You might start with Abraham, Isaiah, or Luke. You might start with the Samaritan woman at the well. You might start with a story about your grandmother or a rural church camp or a dining room table surrounded

by Woody’s chairs. At some point, you will get to Jesus, and Jesus will change everything.

This summer we are telling stories: stories about different people that we find in the Christian Scriptures.

We are doing this as a summer sermon series on Sunday mornings.

In each case we are introduced to them. Sometimes we share details about them that we never noticed before. Sometimes we clear up some misconceptions. Our goal is to discover how that person connected with God and what we can learn from

their lives. So far, we have met Lydia the business woman in Philippi, Philip the evangelist, Mary Magdalene the Apostle to the Apostles, Philemon and Onesimus, and Athenians Dionysius and Damaris. In August and September, we will meet Cleopas and Companion, the Women of Romans 16, Nicodemus, some People in conflict and some Mothers of some church leaders. As a bonus, we are presenting “movies” before each sermon to creatively introduce the characters. I hope that each of these people will come alive for us in a such a way that we are inspired and instructed in our relationship with Jesus.

I hope that as we look at these various people that we will be inspired to look at our own stories: where we are in our journey with God? How did we get here? Where do we want to go?

What do we need to do to get there?

Hopefully, as Rachel says above, “At some point, you will get to Jesus, and Jesus will change everything.”

I also hope that our meetings with

various people in the Bible will not be limited to Sunday morning. I hope that each of us will take the time to meet people in the Bible in our own personal study of the Scriptures. As you meet a character you might want to use a journal to write and reflect on how you relate or connect to that character. If you want to get creative, write an entry in your journal as if you were that character telling their story…or that character writing a letter to you to tell you what they want you to know. Or find someone who will join you in meeting different people in Scriptures and get together, either in person, on the phone or electronically and share with each other what you observe and wonder. When we take the initiative to do “more” than just listen to the sermon, it makes more of an impact on us. AND we will see how Jesus changes everything!

Onesimus: Slave of Glory Pastor Nick Quient

As with all stories, there requires a little bit of imagination to fill in the details. Pastors, theologians, and storytellers are permitted to engage in this sort of reconstruction because, well, we have to. My sermon on July 21 was short and rather to the point due to necessity but I wanted to provide a larger frame of reference for this short epistle.

The life of a slave in the Roman Empire could safely be characterized as solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short—as Thomas Hobbes famously intoned.

Onesimus—his name rather tragically means “useful” in Greek although when used independently as an adjective means something like “powerless”—was a slave, perhaps a common one. Onesimus was indeed a slave name and it is likely Onesimus did not choose his name, and his parents—if he was lucky enough to know them—probably would not have named their son “Useful.” Child mortality in the ancient world was extraordinarily high but if one survived childhood, they lived a fairly standard lifespan.

So it is possible Onesimus is anywhere from 20 to 60 when Paul penned this epistle. That is a wide span, a long time for a life to be lived.

One does not know how Onesimus ended up in prison with Paul but one can safely assume that Philemon sent him to Paul to serve in his stead—a common reality in the ancient world. Masters did this with their slaves all the time. If a wealthy master committed a crime, he or she could send their slave—their ‘body’ (soma)—to suffer the punishment in your stead. This applied to sex, to economic exchanges, to corporal punishment and everything in between. Slaves had no rights to their own body and were often subjected to the worst imaginable conduct. In fact, early Christians coined a term for people who abused children: paidothōros, a combination of pais (“child”) and the verb “destroy, corrupt” (ftheirō)—in short, child-destroyer. Slaves were not given any chance at a healthy life.

Through all of the turbulence, Onesimus ended up as Philemon’s slave. A Christian owning another person.

As such, Philemon is in a place where he can send his slave—his ‘body—to Paul to help Paul in Philemon’s stead. Onesimus is not a runaway slave (something most scholars are mistaken about, in my opinion) but is instead sent by Philemon to serve Paul. Philemon sends his “body” to serve in his stead, to be an asset for Paul.

And when Onesimus, a broken, beaten, dejected “body” arrives in prison with Paul, he apparently has an encounter with the risen Christ. Now, I don’t know about you, but ancient prisons do not strike me as places where religious epiphanies are likely to occur. Yet, Onesimus becomes a Christian in that rank, hellish hole and his life is transformed from subjection and violence—from guilt and shame to freedom in Christ—and he becomes a beloved friend of Paul.

Paul sends him back with two hand-written scrolls.

Onesimus, most likely unable to read, hands the epistle addressed to Philemon for him to read, in front of the entire house church.

And that is, as I talked about in my sermon, where the story gets interesting.

The early Christian movement began to quickly recognize that slaves were not merely human, but that they were all in the same boat: they were all slaves, and Jesus Christ came to set all people free from bondage—metaphorical, existential, and actual bondage. The church is to be the place where baptism and liberation are joined together, where justice has hands and eyes. Paul used his status to set Onesimus free from slavery, and it is our job to use what gifts and privileges we have for the sake of others.

We may not all agree on what that looks like, but Jesus is our example and we are all better when we strive to imitate our Lord—as Paul did in this short epistle.

Singing Sisters

We have – and always have had – singing sisters at First Baptist Church of Redlands. I am using the meaning of the word sister as defined by merriam-webster.com under “sister; 2b”: “a girl or woman who is a member of a Christian church.”

Sisters are identified through our scriptures as active, nurturing, supportive, and valued parts of the faith community. And some have been identified as being musical: “Then the prophet Miriam, Aaron’s sister, took a tambourine in her hand. All the women followed her playing tambourines and dancing” (Exodus 15:20 CEB). Our Hymn of Response on July 14 was “For All the Faithful Women” by Herman Stuempfle, Jr. Stanza 3 of that hymn asserts that Miriam was a singer, as well as a percussionist: “We praise Your name for Miriam who sang triumphantly as Israel marched to freedom, her chains of bondage gone.”

Jesus affirmed the importance of the relationships among His disciples and followers, and He was quick to make that point clearly: “Someone said to him, ‘Look, your mother and brothers are outside wanting to speak with you.’ Jesus replied, ‘Who is my mother? Who are my brothers?’ He stretched out his hand toward his disciples and said, ‘Look, here are my mother and my brothers. Whoever does the will of my Father who is in heaven is my brother, sister, and mother’ ” (Matthew 12:48-50 CEB).

Last month Pastor Shawn preached on Mary Magdalene. A strong connection that I have with Mary Magdalene is through the rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar, with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice. This musical work was released as a vinyl record on 1970, and its Broadway debut was in 1971. That year I was in my second year of study at Taylor University, a Christian liberal arts university in Indiana. I shared with my classmates and professors my interest in the message and music of JC Superstar. While a student at TU, I was asked to sit on a panel discussing whether or not the opera was sacrilegious and/or blasphemous. (The view I defended on that panel was that it was not.) One solo in particular in that opera moved me greatly, and I am drawn to it still nearly 50 years later. “I Don’t Know How to Love Him” speaks of Mary Magdalene’s love for Jesus. Even though the scriptures do not affirm that Mary Magdalene was a singing sister, I would not be surprised if she was one.

Throughout my 34 years of leadership as Minister of Music at First Baptist Church, I have met so many wonderful singing sisters. Their talent, commitment, and friendship have enriched my life immeasurably. They have dedicated so many hours through the decades of practicing our music selections, on Thursdays and on Sundays. They have shared songs in worship with confidence and grace. Some of them have passed away. A singing sister, who sang when asked to do so in the Choir, but who made the sanctuary organ “sing”, was organist Doris Billings (1968-2008.) We thank God for Doris and also for these singing sisters: Eleanor Fishman, Joanne Hershey, Diane Irvin, Betty Lue Johnson, Evelyn Konigsmark, Anne Morlan, Marilyn Peck, Dolores Poore, Phyllis Riday, Rosalyn Vande Steeg, Jean Van Osdel, and Miriam Wingard. (These names come from our memory and our research. If you think of a FBC singing sister whose name doesn’t appear here who sang in our Ministry of Music since October 1985 and has passed away, please contact me.)

And singing sisters continue to bless us during worship. Last month The Young Group shared special music with us in worship and led our spiritual songs. This group of young women spanned the years of grade 6 through the first year of college. Those that sang that morning were: Emma Dedoes, Elise Huynh, Abby Kishimoto, Sophie Kishimoto, Lillian Peske, and Melody Wolfe. These singing sisters have already been very inspirational in our church life and in their families’ lives.

A book I have recently added to my library is Sisters Singing

by Carolyn Brigit Flynn. I recommend it as a wonderful devotional. In a review of this book, author Maya Angelou says: “I plan to keep Sisters Singing in arm’s reach for at least the next year.”

The final stanza of our Hymn of Response on July 14 is an exclamation of joy to the world for past and present saints, and especially for singing sisters: All praise to God the Father! All praise to Christ the Son!’ All praise the Holy Spirit, who binds the Church in one!

With saints who went before us, with saints who witness still, We sing glad alleluias and strive to do Your will.

Loving God, Your presence is like water to a thirsty heart. We thank you for your closeness to us, your love displayed toward us. You are the wounded rock that lies beside us when we are in need of strength. We praise you for your holiness and righteousness and acts of justice in our world. We pray that you would remind us of your presence, your goodness, and your love for us. May we never grow weary of hearing of your wonderful love for the whole cosmos.

You are our strong tower, the one who casts a shadow over us, protecting us in times of trial. We ask for forgiveness for our sins— whether committed by ourselves or committed against another—and we ask for your healing. You are just and fair, impartial and willing to forgive if we but ask. As we go through our days, may we take comfort and delight in your kindness. You are always willing to forgive, always willing to listen.

As we move through summer back toward the fall, we ask for your hand of peace to be upon us. We pray especially for our teachers and students, that you would keep them safe, and they would feel a spirit of calm upon their hearts. May they feel relaxed and enriched during this time.

We pray for those who feel lonely, for those who feel sadness, and for those who are struggling with loss. We pray that you would be a consolation to them at this time. As the church, remind us of our calling to be your hands and feet, to hold and welcome as you hold and welcome us.

As John Wesley once prayed, I am no longer my own, but thine.

Put me to what thou wilt, rank me with whom thou wilt.

Put me to doing, put me to suffering.

Let me be employed for thee or laid aside for thee, exalted for thee or brought low for thee.

Let me be full, let me be empty.

Let me have all things, let me have nothing.

I freely and heartily yield all things to thy pleasure and disposal.

And now, O glorious and blessed God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, thou art mine, and I am thine.

So be it.

And the covenant which I have made on earth, let it be ratified in heaven.

Amen.

JD Campfire I July 7

Train children in the right way, and when old, they will not stray. (Proverbs 22:6). The Bible compells us to tell the story to the next generation.

So let us tell the children of our community why we do what we do in our weekly meeting we affectionately call “The Worship Service”.

We have rituals that have faith meanings and we want them to step into the experience.

As our culture pulls away from a way of life of Christian community our traditions become foreign and less understandable. God has blessed our Church with the gift of generations of Christians from all different occupations, life experiences and from all over the world. What a rich heritage for our children.

Our Junior Disciples (grades 3rd through 5th grades) each summer Sunday host a person who has experience and knowledge of a topic that is foundational to tell the story of faith. The foundational subjects we cover are: The Bible, prayer, tithing, worship, baptism, communion and the sermon. Also shared are the service expressions of our faith: missions and evangelism (international, national and local), church service and hospitality.

The next Junior Disciple Campfire will be on August 11, 4:30 - 6:00 PM. The Grand Gathering event, co-sponsorded by FBCR Children’s and Music Ministry will be Saturday, August 24.

So as you see the JD’s parade up the aisle on summer Sundays, pray that they may grow in the love and knowledge of the Lord.

Bolivia www.internationalministries.org Praise God that Sarah Nash has raised 99% of her fundraising and has now been in Bolivia for about 3 months. Please continue to pray for her as she adjusts to a new life and culture, including new food, new climate, and a change in altitude. Pray for her work in Cocabamba this summer. Pray that her gifts and training would allow her to serve as God’s salt and light to the people she comes in contact with.

Venezuela www.worldvision.org Pray for the people of Venezuela, who continue to suffer under a corrupt government and a broken economy. World Vision is working with thousands of Venezualan refugees in neighboring Columbia: offering food, medicine, and supplies. Families left their homes behind when they still couldn’t buy food, even when working multiple jobs. They share about power cuts, lack of running water, and shortages of food and medicine. Some of the refugees walked for two weeks in order to flee Venezuela, and they will continue walking along steep roads reaching up to 12,000 feet elevation. Pray for the government and economy of Venezuela to be reformed. Pray for these families that are seeking to provide for their children’s basic needs. Pray that aid and supplies would get to these people who are stuck in a desperate situation.

India International Christian Concern International Christian Concern is working to raise funds to deliver 100,000 Bibles across India in the next year. The plan is to equip 1,000 evangelists, each with a bike and 100 Bibles, with the hope that many would hear the good news of Jesus.

Pray that these Bibles would find their way to people who are searching for hope.

Pray that the Holy Spirit would speak to them as they read the Bible and that this initiative would bear eternal fruit.

Eeeesing into E-Giving

by Jonathan Peske In the distant past, donations to the church often came through physical goods. A country pastor may have been given a live chicken, a side of venison, or some fresh fruit or vegetables that just came out of a family garden.

As times changed, it became a burden for the pastor to carry home 20 roosters, 50 tomatoes, and 100 zucchini, so people switched to giving paper money. Others wrote checks out of their accounts at the local bank. This method of giving was much more convenient and also offered many advantages, since this made it possible for the church to pay actual bills.

Now that we are firmly in the grasp of the 21st century, with so much changing all around us, our options for giving to our church have also changed. In addition to giving via cash or check, many in our congregation have already made the switch to e-giving.

Whether you call it e-giving, E-giving, or the trendily attractive eGiving, the ‘e’ technically stands for “electronic.”

But there is so much more to it!

Easy: Go to the “Donate” page on our website http://www. fbcredlands.org/Donate.html using your computer or phone, enter the amount you would like to donate, your means of payment, and your contact information, and you’re done!

Efficient: E-giving saves you time because you don’t have to remember to do it each month. When you enter your donation, there is a box where you can select One-Time, Weekly, or Monthly offering. When you set up a recurring gift, you don’t have to go back to your computer each time to give—it happens automatically.

Effective: When you write a check, Angel has to log it, endorse it, and turn it in to the bank. With e-giving, this is done electronically, freeing up time for Angel to focus her energies on other things. Additionally, while paper giving might ebb and flow as members come and go on business trips or vacations, electronic gifts come in regularly, so the church has a more consistent stream of money coming in.

Exciting: One member shared with me recently how she switched to e-giving and now earns airline miles as she give to the church. Her regular gifts are helping the church while also helping fly her daughter home from college!

Electronic: E-giving is done online, electronically, so you don’t have to deal with paper checks or cash in your wallet. It is all done through secure servers, just like other online financial transactions.

Of course, you can continue to give via cash or check, and there will always be members who prefer this method.

But hopefully there are some reading now who, having been Enlightened about E-giving, will Enthusiastically and Ecstatically Establish their own E-giving profile!

Interview with HUGH HUNTLEY

Hugh Huntley was born in Loyalton, CA near Lake Tahoe on April 25th. Spring was late that year and there was still ten inches of snow outside the hospital. He lived in Loyalton until he was 12 years old when his parents moved to a cattle ranch along the Feather River in the Sierra Valley.

He has a younger sister who is a UR grad who went to Stanford for advanced training and worked as a nurse until her retirement.

He first met his wife, Mary, when they both attended a college career day at Pinecroft camp over a Labor Day weekend. They met again at Berkeley and began going together. They were married at the Frist Baptist Church in Oakland, CA. Hugh has several early memories of church. The first is of falling asleep in the pew when he was six years old. The second is of timing one of the deacon’s communion prayer (it was 16 minutes long). A third is of manually pumping the organ when the electricity went out. He says he could handle three verse hymns well enough, but that the five verse hymns “just about did me in.”

He first began to take the Lord seriously when he was baptized at the age of twelve. He remembers that they had to make a trip to Reno to be baptized because there was a hole in the baptistery at his home church. He also recalls that he was baptized with four Indian (as in Native American) children. The pastor of the Reno church was Brewster Adams whom some of you may remember for his column “Values in the Rough.”

Hugh came to live in Redlands three times. In 1950, he entered UR as a junior and graduated with a BA in Sociology and Education. In 1978, he accepted a call to be the minister of education under Pastor Robert Wallace.

And in 2014, after his retirement, he settled in Plymouth Village. He returned to FBCR because he found that it had retained all the things he had loved about it when he served here.

His favorite Bible verse is: He has showed you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?” Micah 6:8 (RSV) He sees it as the ethical pinnacle of monotheism in the Old Testament.

Hugh’s favorite Bible story is that of Abraham leaving his home in Ur without knowing where he is going (Genesis 12:1-9). He identifies most with Abraham’s willingness to trust God’s guidance without being able to see the route he will take or the purpose of his journey.

His favorite hymn is called “Above the Hills” which is based on Psalm 121 he loves the mountains and often feels close to God in them. Through his study, he came to realize that Jerusalem was destroyed about every 100 years but that God did not abandon his people. He is especially comforted by the third and fourth verses of the song.

Hugh loves backpacking, fly fishing, and hunting. His first memorable time of feeling close to God was when he hiked in the hills above Loyalton. He looked over the meadows and thought “there has to be a reason for this” and in his heart, he felt assurance that God was indeed the creator of heaven and earth.
