A MESSAGE FROM PASTOR SHAWN

Spirit is moving!

The

“Have you ever done a TED Talk?” That was a question posed to me by one of the young adults in our church.

“No, but it would be fun to do it,” was my response. And then my mind started going!

We have lots of people in our congregation who could do a TED Talk. We could do TEDFBCR Talks on all different topics and put them on the internet and then our own people could watch them and people who just find them on the internet can watch them.

Or we can do a podcast. Right now our podcasts consist of my Sunday sermons. That’s ok, but we can really expand the scope and style of podcasts coming from our church. There are other ways, too, in which we can connect, engage and educate our own congregation as well as people who have never set foot in our church.

This is one reason why I am glad that Nicholas Quient is going to join our staff as Associate Pastor for Spiritual Formation and Community Life. Nick comes to us with knowledge and experience in the realm of social media and technology. We have plenty of people who know a lot about these various ways of communicating information, and I anticipate our bringing

these people together to work with Nick in these areas. We also have a lot of people who don’t know what a TED Talk is and maybe are even afraid to find out what a podcast is. But we have a lot of people who know a lot of things that would be worth sharing in all different ways. I am looking forward to seeing what will happen!

But I am also excited that Nick comes to us with an ability to study the Bible and think critically and theologically.

I am looking forward to his sharing of that ability to help us grow in our faith and our understanding of the Bible.

Innovation is wonderful, but it is a “noisy gong” without substance and depth and especially love.

I am very excited that Nick and his spouse, Allison, will have the wonderful opportunity to get to know you! The First Baptist Church of Redlands is a very special place with gifted and caring people. I am looking forward to Nick and Allison finding a “home” here in our congregation—a place in which they can grow and be cared

for as well as share their gifts and talents. I am sure that you will welcome them with the warmth and love with which you did with me and my family two years ago.

Please pray for Nick and Allison as they make this transition in their lives. Pray, also, for our church as we continue to be faithful to the call to follow Christ in our lives together and our mission in the world. Pray for our staff as we learn to work together, support one another and serve in a way that makes the most of the gifts and talents that God has given to us individually and collectively.

As we look to the celebration of Pentecost this month may we once again allow the Holy Spirit to refresh us and empower us to love God, love each other and follow Jesus Christ into the world spreading the Good News of the Kingdom of God!

Past, Present, and Future A LOOK AT FBCR’S HISTORY AND WHAT LIES AHEAD

You may remember hearing some of these articles during a previous Sunday worship service.

Since people enjoyed it, we thought it might be a good idea to publish them in the Tapestry!

There will be a new edition each month.

“Vocations” - by Shelby Pleiss There are many members of this church who have served not only our church but the community as well, through their vocations. Here are a few examples of people who have served the community as well as our church: Reverend Jasper Newton Field was the first president of The University of Redlands.

George Armacost was also a member of this church and president of the University of Redlands.

The Armacost children all grew up attending our church as well: Michael was an ambassador to Japan. Peter was a college president and served as ABC/USA President. Samuel was the president of Bank of America, and Mary was a minister and served as our ABC President.

Charles Pierpoint was a member of this church and served as the treasurer of the University of Redlands. Bob Pierpoint, who grew up in this church, was the CBS White House National Correspondent.

We have had several business owners, offering a wide variety of services to the community. Some businesses that have been owned by our church members have included (and sorry if I miss a few): Gerrard’s, Cortner’s Mortuary, A Mobil Service Station, Gourmet Pizza, Wilden Pump, La India Pottery Shop, Redlands Paint, a local travel agency, a dental office, property investment office, and accounting firms.

We have also had farmers and growers such as the Fords, Kiels, Larsons and Disparte as members of our congregation.

We have also had several lawyers and financial advisors. Also, many people have worked or do work in the education, law enforcement, technology, construction and healthcare fields. For example, Jim Bueermann grew up in this church and served as Redlands Police Chief for many years.

We also have several missionaries who attend our church, and several current and retired ministers in our congregation as well.

Members of our church have served as the Mayor of Redlands and one member of our congregation was a city council member. We have also had members that were city government employees.

Members of our congregation served our country during WWI and WWII and other military actions. Currently, Nick Daniel, grandson of Marge Emrick is serving our country. We thank and appreciate all of these people for their service.

Many members of our church have served not only our church but the community as well. I look forward to seeing how our children and youth serve our community in the future. Thank you!

Our Journey: Praise, Passion, Proclamation

Our Holy Week journey told the story again; it’s an old story which we enthusiastically shared with all people. And it’s a story of love. The chorus of one of my favorite hymns ends with these words: “To tell the old, old story of Jesus and his love.” (“I Love to Tell the Story,” words by Katherine Hankey) It’s a story first told by an angel to women at the tomb: “Do not be alarmed; you are looking for Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has been raised; he is not here. Look, there is the place they laid him. But go, tell his disciples and Peter that he is going ahead of you to Galilee.” (Mark 16:6-7a) This is what we experienced together during this year’s Holy Week journey.

Praise

Palm Sunday was very exciting as we sang our praises and waved our palm branches as they did so long ago: “So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him, shouting, ‘Hosanna!

Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord—the King of Israel!’ Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it; as it is written: ‘Do not be afraid, daughter of Zion. Look, your king is coming, sitting on a donkey’s colt!’ (John 12:13-15). Our Worship Ensemble led 2 different settings with the title “Hosanna;” one by Carl Tuttle and another Hillsong United with Jonathan Peske on guitar, Rod Zambrows on bass, and Scott Nelson on piano. Our choirs entered the sanctuary as we do each Palm Sunday, with the Junior Disciples Choir and the God’s Kids Choir waving palm branches followed by the robed Worship Choir and ministers processing as the congregation sang: “Hosanna, Loud Hosanna.”

by Natalie Sleeth. And our Junior Disciples Choir sang “Hosanna to the Song” with Melody Wolfe as the soloist. The service then moved – as we were going to do during the days of Holy Week – into the theme as Christ’s passion, as Lisa Olson and Jonathan Peske shared “How Deep the Father’s Love for Us.”

Proclamation

Passion

On Thursday evening we read again the passion narrative. We used mostly Mark’s Gospel, as we have been doing this year in the lectionary cycle. Led by our Worship Ensemble, we sang “One Bread, One Body” by John Michael Talbot during Communion. Five stained-glass works of art made by our congregation during Lent moved us as we heard again the story. After our time of Communion, the Worship Ensemble shared “Thy Will” by Hillary Scott. Then 16 readers and 2 instrumentalists retold the story of the passion of our Lord. Using the theme of the 14 Stations of the Cross, our readers took us through Mark 14 and 15 with reflections from The Cross as a Journey: The Stations of the Cross for Protestant Worship by Dennis Bratcher.

Candles were extinguished and the lights illuminating our art works were removed until only the Christ candle was shining. After it was extinguished, we left silently.

The next night, 10 members of the Worship Choir joined singers from other Redlands churches for the city-wide Good Friday Service at First Presbyterian Church. FBC will host the service next year.

But that’s not the end of the story: the Good News of the resurrection of our Lord was experienced again on Easter Sunday!

The Worship Choir, the Worship Ensemble, the God’s Kids Choir, a five piece Brass Ensemble from Citrus Valley High School, and Linda Gentile at the organ led us musically as we proclaimed to the world God’s victory over death, sin, and the grave! And that wonderful cross filled with flowers! We had 3 crosses on our platform for our Lenten Meditation throughout the Lenten Season. But for Easter Sunday, those crosses were removed and our magnificent cross with flowers invited our faith community into worship as it hung in the chancel of the sanctuary. Then as we moved to the courtyard for the Easter Egg Hunt, Linda majestically shared “Hallelujah!” from Handel’s Messiah.

A moving experience for all: the meditative days of Lent, the praise on Palm Sunday, the passion of Holy Week, the joy through our proclamation on Easter Sunday.

Worldwide Prayer Concerns

“But recall those earlier days when, after you had been enlightened, you endured a hard struggle with sufferings, sometimes being publicly exposed to abuse and persecution, and sometimes being partners with those so treated.” –Hebrews 10:32-33 Here are three stories that look back on how God has worked over many years--may these stories challenge and inspire us to take stock of how God wants to use us to bless others in 2018.

Congo Last month Glen Chapman headed back to the Kikongo; Rita will be following soon.

Pray for them both to be able to transition back into their ministry role after being stateside this past year. Pray that this season of rest will help Glen and Rita return to ministry with new vision and vigor. Pray for Kyle and Katrina Williams and their family who also serve in Kikongo. Pray for protection for the people of Kikongo amid the unrest over the political situation in Congo as the president refuses to step down.

Bolivia

www.internationalministries.org Last month we met and prayed for Sarah Nash, one of our newest global servants who is headed to Bolivia. She will be extending the ministry of the “House of Hope” into Santa Cruz de la Sierra. Sarah is well trained for global service: she has a degree in theology and training as a dental assistant and school teacher. Pray that Sarah is able to raise the remainder of her financial support so that she can actually head out into the mission field. Pray that the House of Hope has the resources to expand their health and education programs according to the plan. Pray that Sarah is able to feel God’s presence beside her, equipping and preparing her for all she will face.

Pakistan

Update from www.dw.com This month marks 7 ½ years since Asia Bibi’s blasphemy conviction, though she has been in prison for nearly 9 years (since June 2009). We have been praying regularly for her all this time. You may remember that she was unjustly accused under Pakistan’s strict statute and sentenced to death by hanging. Her case, and its appeals, has been dragging on for years. France has offered to move her there; Italy has championed her cause; an envoy from EU has pressed for release--but many inside Pakistan absolutely oppose releasing Asia Bibi. Her lawyer said recently that she is being treated well in prison and has taken encouragement from the international support that her case has garnered. However, he is not hopeful that she will be pardoned. Pray that she continues to know that she is remembered by her brothers and sisters all around the world. Pray for her children, who are growing up without seeing their mother each day. Pray that Pakistani government leaders would be spurred to work for justice despite the popular pressure to punish Asia Bibi under this unjust law.

Family Service is so appreciative for our 12 boxes of food and gift cards. The Local Outreach Commission is so proud, and appreciates your support!

Thursday Nights children’s Bible study: “Celebration”. Pentecost Sunday is coming up on May 20th. It is time to get in the mood to celebrate and witness what God has done and continues to do with God’s people. We will discover ways that we can celebrate Jesus’ sending of the Holy Spirit to help us live a joyfilled and meaningful life. Starts May 3.

Game Night is returning on our last Thursday Night Dinner June 14th. More details will come.

Thursday night dinner and programming will return in September.

Deborah House Updates Thank you, FBC family for the supplies donated to Deborah House.

Gregg and Cheryl Sneller, Tom Kirkpatrick and Liz Laine loaded a car and trailer and headed down to Tijuana. First stop was at the apartment of missionary Deliris in San Diego. Goodies were transferred to two of her vehicles and she made the border crossing so easy (no $ asked for!)

The campus of Deborah House has been enlarged thanks to U.S. volunteers. It now boasts a small school, lovely playground, artificial grass area, much enlarged sewing room, carpenters shop and all this in addition to the original two story “bunkhouse,“ kitchen, bathrooms, store rooms, office and living area.

The children were kept entertained decorating Easter baskets, eggs and drawing pictures. We played “Uno“ with them, baked cookies and the boys enjoyed rough housing with Tom and being read to.

Crochet lessons were given to the ladies so that they could work on creating their own blankets. This was met with limited success but hopefully they will become more proficient with practice.

We spent an overnight with them and enjoyed a special time of sharing with the Moms after the children were in bed. Two of the Moms were being Baptized Easter Sunday.

The urgent need at Deborah House is for personnel. The housekeeper left 6 months ago, and sewing teacher Norma has had to take over her duties, leaving no time to teach sewing. A teacher is in training for the school but her studies are not completed. There is no one to counsel the men, so family reunification is currently unlikely.

All the ladies sport a cell phone, so security is not quite as good as in the past.

Crossing back into the U.S.A. was a long wait in line but no problem once you had looked the border guard in the eye and he confirmed you looked somewhat like your passport picture.

We all felt blessed being able to spend time with our missionary and our sisters in Deborah House.

Get To Know: Raymond Del Rosario

Raymond Del Rosario was born on April 12, 1966 at Mary Johnston Hospital in Manila, Philippines.

He attended De La Salle University in Manila and received a BA in Science and Marketing. When he got to the USA, he returned to school. He graduated from the University of Redlands in 2016 where he received a bachelor degree in Business Administration.

He is the eldest child. He has two sisters. The second child in the family is Nancy. She lives in Saskatchewan, Canada and is rearing two boys.

Rory, the youngest child, lives in the USA in New Jersey, where she works for AXA Financial Services.

Raymond was brought up a Roman Catholic. He was aware of a large chapel with many pillars and lots of statues of saints when he went to church. He recalls that cross at the front of the church carried a crucified Christ. He also remembers attending many weekday Masses. In his childhood, he says he felt reassured by the changelessness of the Mass.

In 1998, Raymond moved from Manila to the US to be closer to his family. He met his wife, Glenda, in the US. They were married on September 28, 2002 in the Registrars’ Office of the City of Montclair. They lived in Ontario for three years.

The couple moved to Mentone almost fifteen years ago. They were looking for a larger house in which to grow their family. They also liked its rural atmosphere. It has worked out well for Raymond’s commute as well. He now works for a manufacturing company based in Riverside.

After they moved to Mentone, Raymond and Glenda were looking for another Baptist church where they might grow in their faith. They found Redlands First Baptist in the Yellow Pages.

They then checked out our website. They liked the look of that, so they came visiting. They were so comfortable they have decided to join us.

During his faith journey, Raymond found a great contrast between what he grew up with in the Philippine Catholic Church and what he found practiced in the Catholic Church in American. He felt less understood and accepted as a result. He decided he wanted to become an official part of Redlands First Baptist and was accepted into our congregation by profession of Christian faith.

Raymond feels he is just learning the Bible. He has yet to pick a favorite scripture or Bible Story.

He does have two favorite songs. Both are used as recessional hymns. One is “My Friends Let Us Grow in Grace.” The other is “Go Tell it on the Mountain.” The second one speaks to his commitment to grow so that others will see Jesus in him.

Just because he doesn’t yet have a favorite verse, doesn’t mean he doesn’t find the Scripture helpful. He reads the Bible frequently. And when he feels in need of guidance, he lets the Spirit guide him until he finds the verses that speak to him. One of the things about our church Raymond finds helpful is the sermon. He feels his understanding of the Scripture growing as he listens to Pastor Shawn’s explanations of what the passages mean and how they can be reflected in our own lives. He also enjoys the choir and how Richard Steffen conducts it.

We are glad we can encourage Raymond in his Christian walk. We hope we will continue to help him explore a deeper walk with Christ.

Miller-Trayhern Scholarship Selection Criteria The Miller-Trayhern Scholarship Fund was founded in 1969 by donations from the family of the late Phyllis Miller and Dr. Ward S. Miller. The Fund may be used for those pursuing an undergraduate degree or a post-graduate degree. Undergraduates may be attending a two-year community college or a four year college or university.

Applicants may be in any year of their degree program this coming Fall term and it is not necessary that they be associated with The First Baptist Church of Redlands or a Baptist denomination. This scholarship is intended for applicants who have demonstrated their Christian commitment through active participation in/or service to the church of which they have been a member; and demonstrated serious regard for their academic studies. Preference is given to applicants’ with interest in Christian ministry or church-related vocation.

Selection Criteria in Order of Priority:

1. Awards are restricted to those typically 28 years of age or younger who have demonstrated their Christian commitment through active participation in and/or service to the church.

2. Preference will be given to those who have exhibited a serious regard for their studies as demonstrated in their scholastic record during the previous academic year.

3. Preference will be given to applicants who have been actively involved at the First Baptist Church of Redlands.

4. Finally, among applicants equally qualified in the foregoing respects, preference will be given to those applicants indicating an interest in Christian ministry or a church-related vocation.

Completed application and required paperwork must be submitted or postmarked by June 15.

CREATIVE CORNER

Reflections on the Twenty-third Psalm

The Lord is my Shepherd: I’m one of his sheep.

At His side I have enjoyed green pastures, and I have rested beside still waters.

He leads me along the right path, but I,---I go off to explore, and stray.

The Good Shepherd cares about me.

He comes to find me and guides me back to the flock.

But it’s not just me--He is so great that even if the whole flock goes astray at once, He finds each one and we follow Him back.

And then, there are those deep, shadowy valleys.

I have had to walk through them, and I have been very afraid.

But the Great Shepherd cherishes me, comforts me.

He leads me through the deathly shadows, and teaches me not to fear.

Even when predators surround me, He supplies my needs, soothes my anxieties, and I can be joyful.

Yahweh, the Lord God Almighty is my Shepherd: I am one of His beloved sheep.

How wonderful!---His goodness and mercy are with me every day.

How marvelous!---The Great Shepherd of the sheep promises me: I can live with Him in His House forever.

Hallelujah! Amen.
