Experiencing It seems like we just finished with Christmas and already we are thinking about Lent…well, maybe you aren’t, but the staff and other leaders are! Lent is that season in the Church year in which we look to the Cross. It begins with the story of Jesus confronting temptation and ends with Holy Week, Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and, ultimately, Easter. In many ways, the reflection that we do in our lives during the season of Lent is preparing us for the ramifications of the Crucifixion and Resurrection of Jesus on our lives today.

One of the ways that many experience Lent is to give something up. Often it is something that we really enjoy, like chocolate or soda. Maybe it is an activity, like watching TV or spending time on Facebook.

Sometimes people decide to “add” something to their lives, like daily Bible or devotional reading or a new form of prayer, such as centering prayer. Whatever one decides to do, it is meant to move us into habits that make an impact on our lives and spirits. Often pushing us beyond our comfort zones.

A MESSAGE FROM PASTOR SHAWN

Lent

During this season of Lent, we will be providing an opportunity to add something to your life that may move you out of your comfort zone, but will no doubt be a meaningful experience.

During our Bible study time on Thursday nights we will be exploring the road to the cross that Jesus took from the events beginning with the upper room and the Last Supper to the Tomb.

We will do this through Bible study and involvement in the creation of artistic projects that will tell the story of Jesus on the way to the cross. Even the person who doesn’t think that they are artistic at all will be able to participate in these projects. In the end we will create pieces that will be used in our Holy Week activities. But I anticipate and hope that the experience will touch us in a new and different way during this Lenten season—that we will discover new things about ourselves and our relationship with God. We will begin this season with a Mardi Gras celebration on Thursday, February 8. It will be an evening of fun foods and table games as a last “hurrah” before Lent begins. The following Thursday, February 15, we will have as our guest the Rev. Joel Fairley, Pastor of First Baptist

Church, Claremont. He is an artist who will introduce the Lenten experience and help us get started. The weeks after that, we will explore the “Road to the Cross” through the eyes of those who encountered Jesus along the way. We will also design and create our projects, with time to work on them each week.

In the meantime, I invite you to begin praying that God will prepare your heart for this experience so that ultimately your relationship with God will be enhanced and deepened in new ways. We will be sharing more information in the next couple of weeks.

I am excited to see what will happen!

Past, Present, and Future A LOOK AT FBCR’S HISTORY AND WHAT LIES AHEAD

You may remember hearing some of these articles during a previous Sunday worship service.

Since people enjoyed it, we thought it might be a good idea to publish them in the Tapestry!

There will be a new edition each month.

“A Musical Church” - Written by Richard W. Steffen; presented by Aidan Huynh Chapter 4 of the book The First Baptist Church of Redlands, California 1887-1987 is titled: “We Worship Together.” And preaching, praying, and singing have always been important as we have met to praise God throughout these past 130 years. Singers at First Baptist Church have been joining together in choirs and ensembles to sing during worship since 1901, when Nellie Fowler organized a “choral union” as the first singing ensemble in the church’s history. Through the years, the church developed a strong relationship with the Music Department at the University of Redlands, and for 45 years, all of our church’s music directors were faculty members at the U of R. Scholarships were provided at one time to empower 8 university students to participate in worship musically. Many major musical works have been presented since 1901, especially during Christmas and Easter seasons.

Written 146 years before the founding of our church, the Ministry of Music at FBC has had a deep admiration of Handel’s Messiah, as well as so much other choral music of Handel. On Christmas Eve last year, operatic soprano Ms. Angel Blue joined our choir to present 4 movements of the work. Doris Billings, our organist for 40 years, played “Hallelujah” from Messiah as her postlude on many Easter Sundays. Our organist Linda Gentile is playing “Hallelujah” as her postlude today. And we will sing “Joy to the World,” which was written by Handel.

In our FBC Choir Library there are 5 individual choral pieces written by Handel that are not from Messiah, and earlier in the service today our Worship Choir sang one of those: “Hallelujah, Amen” from Judas Maccabaeus. And we have 30 copies of the complete vocal score of Messiah. Those copies were a gift by the Elbert Laycook family in memory of Bruce Laycook’s mother Florence. And those copies were used by our Chancel Choir (now called our Worship Choir) as they presented the Christmas section of Messiah to our community 25 years ago.

And that is how our story today begins.

In 1985, the musicians around the world were excited to share the music of Johann Sebastian Bach and George Frideric Handel, as groups celebrated the 300th birthday of these musical geniuses. And just 7 years later, another event was celebrated: the 250th anniversary of the first performance of Messiah.

Through a grant given by the American Federation of Musicians local branch and from the Omer Robbins Endowment Fund at First Baptist Church, a 10 member orchestral ensemble accompanied our church’s Chancel Choir performance of the Christmas section of Messiah in December, 1992. The Choir was comprised of 32 singers, and the 6 soloists were members of the Choir and special guests. And 5 members of the Choir that day share music each week as members of our Worship Choir now.

The opening chorus of Messiah is “And the Glory of the Lord.” The Worship Choir will be practicing that selection Thursday evenings at our 7:45 pm rehearsals beginning after Thanksgiving, and the Choir will sing it on Christmas Eve this year. You can stop by, practice, and sing that song with the Choir on Christmas Eve. The prayer of the Choir is that our sharing this song will have the same goal that Handel had when he wrote Messiah.

This is the blessing that appears at the end of Messiah: SDG. “Soli Deo Gloria.” “To God alone the glory.”

f Who Is He? Who He Is. d

What a difference the order of these 3 words makes! Our Worship Choir will share a Special Music selection on February 4 that is musically inspiring and that has a very profound text. The writer of that text was Albert Schweitzer.

He was a French-German theologian, organist, writer, humanitarian, philosopher, and physician. Schweitzer was the 1952 Nobel Peace Prize winner for his philosophy of “Reverence for Life.” On the 80th birthday celebration of Albert Schweitzer in 1954, Albert Einstein contributed his insight of him: “Hardly ever have I known another man in whom mercy and desire for beauty are connected that ideal as in Albert Schweitzer.”

Our song was written in 1957

by Jane Marshall, and the title is “He Comes to Us.” Our lyrics are from Schweitzer’s book, The Quest for the Historical Jesus.

Written in 1906 in German and translated into English in 1910

by W. Montgomery, his book concludes with his “results.”

Here is a part of his insight: “Jesus as a concrete historical personality remains a stranger to our time, but His spirit, which lies hidden in His words, is known in simplicity, and its influence is direct. Every saying contains in its own way the whole Jesus. The very strangeness and unconditionedness in which He stands before us makes it easier for individuals to find their own personal standpoint in regard to Him.” His book ends with this revelation, and it’s the text of our song: “He comes to us as One unknown, without a name,

as of old, by the lakeside, He came to those men who knew Him not. He speaks to us the same words: ‘Follow thou me!’ and sets us to the tasks which He has to fulfill for our time. He commands. And to those who obey Him, whether they be wise or simple, He will reveal himself in the toils, the conflicts, the sufferings which they shall pass through in His fellowship, and, as an ineffable mystery, they shall learn in their own experience who He is.”

Schweitzer’s words have amazing parallels in scripture.

He comes to us as One unknown, without a name: “When the men came to Jesus, they said, ‘John the Baptist sent us to you to ask, “‘Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?’”’

(Luke 7:20, NIV) As of old, by the lakeside: “He got into one of the boats, and asked him (Simon) to put out a little from shore.” (Luke 5:3, NIV) He speaks to us the same words: “Follow thou me!” “Jesus went out and saw a tax collector by the name of Levi sitting at his tax booth. ‘Follow me,’ Jesus said to him.” (Luke 5:27, NIV) And sets us to the tasks which He has to fulfill for our time: “I’ll make a new kind of fisherman out of you. I’ll show you how to catch men and women

instead of perch and bass.”

(Matthew 4:19, The Message) He commands. And to those who obey Him, whether they be wise or simple, He will reveal himself: “They who have my commandments and keep them are those who love me; and those who love me will be loved by my Father, and I will love them and reveal myself to them.”

(John 14:21, NRSV) In the toils, the conflicts, the sufferings which they shall pass through in His fellowship: “So don’t be ashamed of the testimony about the Lord or of me, his prisoner. Instead, share the suffering for the good news, depending on God’s power.” (2 Timothy 1:8, CEB) And, as an ineffable mystery, they shall learn in their own experience who He is: “He is the source of your life in Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification and redemption.”

(1 Corinthians 1:30, NRSV) And to quote the text of this moving hymn by Fanny Crosby: “To God be glory, great things He has done.”

We will share this song on our February Communion Sunday.

As we hear these words of the Apostle Paul, may our song provide an opportunity for you to commune with God and understand better whom Jesus is: “For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.” (1 Corinthians 11:26, NRSV)

Worldwide Prayer Concerns “But recall those earlier days when, after you had been enlightened, you endured a hard struggle with sufferings, sometimes being publicly exposed to abuse and persecution, and sometimes being partners with those so treated.” –Hebrews 10:32-33 Here are two stories that look back on how God has worked over many years--may these stories challenge and inspire us to take stock of how God wants to use us to bless others in 2018.

Congo

Multiple news sources, incuding al-Jazeera.com About a dozen people were killed and scores more wounded when government forces fired tear gas, rubber bullets, and live ammunition, and blocked access into churches in an effort to shut down protests against President Kabila that took place at the very end of 2017. President Kabila has been in power for more than 16 years and has stayed beyond the constitutional limit of two terms. He has postponed elections and many believe he is attempting to hold on to power.

The protests were organized in large part by Catholic church leaders, which is why the government targeted churches in their crackdown. Even the head of the UN has called for Kabila to leave office, which is what he should do based on both the constitution and an agreement made in 2016. Pray for this political crisis in the DRC and that peaceful protesters would be protected rather than attacked.

Iran

Persecution.org Pray for four Christians who are currently in prison for their faith and appealing their sentences, ranging from 5-15 years. They are Victor Tamraz, along with his wife Samiram Khabizeh; Amin Naderi, and Hadi Asgardi. They have been accused of acting against the national security because of their Christian activity and are being pressured to convert back to Islam. Pray that they find justice on appeal and can be released from prison without serving these long sentences.

Turkey

Persecution.org and Religion News Service Pray for Andrew Brunson, an American citizen who has lived in Turkey for many years as a Presbyterian pastor, but who has languished in jail for over a year based on secret charges. He has lost more than 50 pounds and is only allowed to leave his cell once a week. He is the only Christian in the prison. He has no idea when he will be put on trial or even what the specific charges are that have caused him to be in prison. He was arrested in the general crackdown following the 2016 coup attempt, though he had no involvement in the coup. Pray that Pastor Brunson would be able to find God’s hope and peace in the midst of this injustice. Pray that he would soon be released and allowed to return to his wife and children.

Things to Know Corrections to the “Get to Know: Carolyn Codd” article.

We apologize that were a few incorrect pieces in last month’s article. Corrections are as follows: Carolyn has one sister who is a retired Special Ed. Teacher, who lives in Fullerton, CA. She met her husband, Jose Gonzalez, who is from Spain, while they were both working in New Jersey: he as a chemical engineer and she as a Social Worker. They were married in 1989. Later on they moved to Spain, where they lived for about 30 years, until this past spring when they left Spain and moved into Royal Carriage Estates. In Spain Carolyn did some work as an English tutor. Since retiring, she enjoys, among other things, reading, writing some poetry, and gardening.

“Welcome” Yard Signs Are Available.

This is a project of the Redlands Area Interfaith Council, of which FBCR is a participating member. The signs say in English, Spanish, and Arabic, “No matter where you are from, we’re glad you’re our neighbor.”

They are green, blue, and red in color. A display will be in the narthex on Sundays and in the fellowship hall on Thursday nights. The cost is $15 each.

The Local Outreach Commission would like to thank the congregation that generously donated food and money to the Annual Family Service Thanksgiving collection. We were able to collect and donate 600 pounds of food and $640.00 in Stater Bros. gift cards, and cash. Loving the Unloveable

I hit the red button in front of me. A light bulb lit up and a buzzzz sound rang out.

My scholastic bowl coach, Ms. Lemon, had just asked the last question of our practice match. The score was tied. And I knew the answer. The question: “Who wrote Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea?” Mrs. Lemon called on me as I started laughing so hard I couldn’t get the name “Jules Verne” out.

“Time’s up,” she said. And then, the other team won.

As I was leaving practice, Ms. Lemon pulled me aside. “You lost that for your team,” she said, her voice shaking.

“And I know why. Jules Verne made you think of Vern didn’t it?” Everyone at my school knew Vern. He smelled.

He wore big work boots and torn shirts every day. And he didn’t seem too bright. When Jules Verne came to mind, I was laughing at the idea of Vern writing a book. “Vern doesn’t deserve to be treated that way,” Ms. Lemon said.

“What makes you think he’s so unlovable that he doesn’t deserve simple respect?”

I had no answer. Suddenly feeling hot and sweaty, I apologized to her and left. But one word stuck with me for days: unlovable. I kept thinking about all the people in my high school who did seem downright unlovable. There were strange outcasts like Vern. There were mean kids like Justin, the bully who always called me fat. And there were crabby, annoying people like those guys in my algebra study group who never agreed about anything. Clearly, I thought, all of these people are unlovable. But as a Christian, I’m supposed to love them all.

Perhaps Jesus’ toughest teaching is to “love your neighbor as yourself” (Mark 12: 31, NIV). Sure, that seems easy enough—until you really think about what it means. He didn’t say “like” them. He said “love” them. And you don’t get to pick who your neighbor is. It’s everyone—from Vern to Justin to your little brother who shampoos your hair while you sleep. (OK, maybe only my brother did that.) Were Jesus’ expectations too high? I mean, he never had to go to high school. If so, surely he’d know that it’s not so easy to love everybody.

Well, that’s a cool thing about Jesus. He wasn’t just God on High shouting down orders. He experienced what we experience. When he told us to live a certain way, it was coming from a guy who’d been there. He lived on Earth— and probably knew his share of Verns and Justins. And he had little brothers.

However, Jesus understood two important truths: 1) Everyone is created in God’s image. So if we are worthy of love, so is everyone else because of who made them.

2) Because of sin, we’re all really unlovable. But Christ changed the rules by offering love, grace and forgiveness (Romans 5:8). If God can love us, surely we can love those around us.

But how do we do it?

Recently, I heard a pastor give a sermon about John 13. It changed how I view treating the hard-to-like people around me. Here’s the big thing the pastor said that blew my mind: At the Last Supper, Jesus was in the same room with a bunch of people about to betray him, deny him and desert him. And he knew it. Talk about hard-to like people. But what does Jesus do? “He got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him” (John 13:4-5, NIV).

Whoa. He’s surrounded by guys who don’t deserve his love or respect. And he washes their feet. Right here, Jesus shows how to love the unlovables. It’s not to just tolerate them. Or just not make fun of them. Or to pretend you love them. Instead, we should serve them. Here’s why: 1) Serving gives us an easy way to see how we should love. It’s not just some mushy, hard-to-grasp emotion, but an action. 2) Serving someone has a way of changing the way we see them. If you are continually looking out for a way to help someone, it’s very hard to think they’re worthless. It’s very hard to stay mad at them.

Of course, it’d be weird to whip out a towel and lather up a bully’s feet. But serving them starts with praying for them. And then look for opportunities. Maybe it’s holding a door open when someone is carrying his band instrument. Or spotting someone a quarter when she’s short for a soda.

I wish I could say that I helped Vern with math problems. Or helped Justin jump his car. But I didn’t. However, those regrets push me to make the choice to serve the Justins and Verns in my life now. And that’s exactly what it is: a choice. Galatians 5:13 puts it like this: “It is absolutely clear that God has called you to a free life. Just make sure that you don’t use this freedom as an excuse to do whatever you want … Rather, use your freedom to serve one another in love” (The Message). https://www.christianitytoday.com/iyf/truelifestories/ithappenedtome/unlovable.html

Want to start the new year in a healthy and fun way? Come join us for an hour walk through the Yucaipa Hills. We meet at the Trail Head parking lot at Crafton Hill Community College every Saturday at 8:00 am and walk approximately 3 miles. Our typical walk starts off going down hill a quarter of the distance, then uphill for half the distance, and then downhill for the last quarter. My walking app tells me it is a 500 foot change in elevation. This is not a hike for beginners. Our numbers have varied throughout the past year from 1 to 20.
