A Message from Pastor Shawn Zambrows

There is a song that pretty much every Hoosier knows. The chorus goes like this: Back home again in Indiana And it seems that I can see The gleaming candlelight, still burning bright Through the sycamores for me The new-mowed hay sends all its fragrance Through the fields I used to roam When I dream about the moonlight on the Wabash How I long for my Indiana home.

Though I only lived in Indiana for 17 years, and I always considered myself a “California girl,” I had a little sense of this feeling of being “back home in Indiana” when Rod and I spent a long weekend there recently. We saw old friends and it felt like no time has passed since we last saw them. It was hard to realize as we would say “good-bye” to these people after our visit that we weren’t going to just see

them again next week. Some of them, we may never see again in person.

Yet we are privileged to have a home here in Redlands. We are near many of our relatives again and we have made some wonderful new friends whom we feel like we have known forever. We have a HOME. While we were at the International Missions Conference at Green Lake, WI, this past month we heard stories of people who are displaced from their homes--people who have lost everything or left everything behind in order to find a safe place to live.

They never wanted to leave their homes, friends and, in many cases, family. Often, they remembered times when life was good, and they were able to work, study, plan for their future, and live happily. Then disaster, political or social unrest, war or something out of their control happened and it was all gone. In many cases through great acts of bravery and heroism they were able to cross borders into potentially better places to hopefully start over again. But often refugees are not welcomed into these new places. They are met with suspicion, hostility and even hatred. Even at our own border, refugees have been separated from the children that they were trying to save from dangers in their homelands. I am sure that they are wondering if they will ever find a HOME again. We heard stories of children who were abandoned by family and society to live on the streets of Brazil. We heard stories of people who were tricked into leaving home to find economic help for their families only to be trafficked into the sex trade or other inhumane working conditions.

But we also heard stories of people finding a HOME. In Lebanon there are Christian churches that are welcoming

Syrian refugees with open arms—despite a history of hostility between the Lebanese and Syrians. Each Lebanese family can share stories of past abuses that happened to family members at the hands of Syrians.

And yet they find a love for these refugees that has the power to transform lives… and God is blessing them with people coming to follow Jesus and then take the Good News into other countries in the Arab world. We heard stories of children in Brazil that find a HOME and with it an education and support that helps them to grow up to make a living wage and build a HOME and family and life of their own.

We heard stories of people in Thailand that were rescued out of prostitution and brought to a HOME where they would receive love, education, healthcare and training so that they would truly be able to help support their families. And these are only some examples.

It caused me to ask the question, “How can we help people find a HOME?” There are people who have found a HOME in our church that they have found nowhere else in their lives. How can we make this experience of HOME be available to more people? How can we help more people in Redlands find a HOME, some of them literally. What can we do to support those who are working around the world to make sure that people find their way to a HOME in Christ—whether it is a literal home or family or loving support or education or good health or guidance, etc.? Let us continue to strive for the Kingdom of God and God’s justice and discover how we can be a HOME and we can help people find their HOME. Grace and peace in Christ, Pastor Shawn

Jesus, Swords, and the Abolition of Fear Pastor Nick Quient “ And when I saw him, I collapsed to his feet like I was dead. And he placed his right hand upon me, saying: “Do not be afraid: I am the first and the last…”

–Revelation 1:17

When I was growing up, Christian media was at an all-time frenzy concerning the Y2K movement. I recall going with my dad to fill up massive containers of water and going with my mother to stock up the cupboards with lots of canned goods.

While my parents were not doomsday preppers, there was an undeniable angst in the air, especially around the church we attended. In going through a rather intense week (preaching two sermons on some difficult texts of Scripture) here at First Baptist Redlands, I suppose I’ve been struck by the general unease at play in our culture. This is not to be reduced merely to our political atmosphere—although there is an undeniable element of that—but rather that our culture is rife with anticipation and anxiety and angst about what will happen next.

In essence, we are uneasy because we are hearing rumors of war, and more rumors about the rumors.

So, one can imagine when a kid in that environment (and I know I am not the only one at this church!) coming to the Book of Revelation and finding nothing but terror and frightfulness within its pages. John the Seer, with his searing imagery and hyperbolic language, is a writer who excites and confounds the imagination of us all. This was a point of discussion in our first Bible study meeting on Thursday night on July 5, where many people described their experiences in reading the Book of Revelation.

The power of this language is simply petrifying, especially for those who are steeped in an apocalyptic background where the end of the universe is imminent. We imagine a violent and cruel God, seeking our blood to satiate his wrath and vengeance: while the imagery in Revelation is complex, this verse ought to be a helpful lens for us all as we travel through our lives together.

The opening phrase is “Do not be afraid: I am the first and the last.” Do not be afraid. In a time of exile, anguish, and violence, Jesus’ first spoken words in this visionary apocalypse are “do not be afraid.” Despite the sights and signs, Jesus’ appearance is meant to evoke awe, not terror. In the Son, fear is removed from our lives and replaced with a holy awe at the sight of a holy God. This God and this God alone possesses the “keys of Death and Hades.” And this living God is in the business of casting fear away from our lives so that we might be freed to serve and love without respite or terror. Together, as the body of Christ, we are in the business of exhibiting God’s love for all people. Let us do so with vigor and holy love, emboldened by the eternal presence of the Holy Spirit.

And my parents still use the water they saved from the Y2K scare, so I guess there is a point to being cautious!

Hence, the atmosphere was and is rife with the language of “tribulation” and “apocalypse,” and we are all waiting and staring at our screens, wishing for just some relief from our anxious hearts.

Which is where our text comes in today. In the previous verses (v.15-16), John the Seer has described Jesus in gaudy images: “ his eyes were like a raging fire,” “his voice was like a multitude of raging seas,” and “he had in his right hand seven stars, and from his mouth preceded a long double-edged sword, and his mouth was like the sun radiating by its power.”

Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty Richard W. Steffan, Minister of Music

“Holy, Holy, Holy” was written by Reginald Heber, an Anglican minister, nearly two centuries ago. He wrote hymns in an attempt to improve the singing in his little congregation at Hodnet, near Birmingham, England.

Richard Niell Donovan, a retired Disciples of Christ pastor, wrote about this great hymn in 2007 on his website SermonWriter.com. “Most congregations in those days sang the Psalter— but most sang it badly. To inject a bit of spirit in the hymn-singing, Heber introduced his congregation to some of the modern church music of his day, to include John Newton’s “Amazing Grace.”

Imagine this situation: it’s 1826, and an ordained minister and poet wants to invigorate church singing with more “modern” hymn and song texts! And we are grateful for his interest – and to those who continue to do this great work now – to expand singing in worship with the culture of the current times. And think of “Amazing Grace” being a “modern” hymn! The words were written by another Anglican minister John Newton in 1779. But those words and the tune we now use “New Britain” weren’t joined together until after the tune was written in 1832.

Rev. Heber wrote dozens of hymns, the best-known being “Holy, Holy, Holy.” He wrote it for Trinity Sunday, using these words in the first and last verses: “God in three persons, blessed Trinity.” He used the symbolism of three often in this hymn: God is “holy, merciful, and mighty,” he is “perfect in power, in love and purity,” he is worshiped by saints, cherubim, and seraphim, and he’s praised “in earth and sky and sea.”

When Rev. Heber was 40 years old, he left England to begin his work as Bishop of Calcutta, India. He died at the age of 43 after serving only three years in India.

This hymn, “Holy, Holy, Holy,” has blessed people all over the world. Translated into many languages, it was Rev. Heber’s most enduring gift to church hymn singing.

The inspiration of that hymn text was Revelation 4:8. We have been having a wonderful time in Pastor Nick’s Thursday evening class on the Book of Revelation. From Pastor Nick’s

translation, we read the beginning of this profound book: “An apocalyptic revelation of Jesus the Anointed, whom God has handed down to show to his slaves what must soon come swiftly to pass, and he has made it known through the sending of his angel to his slave, John” (Revelation 1:1 NQ)

Here is the text of our hymn’s theme: “And the four living creatures each had six wings, filled with eyes all around and behind, and day and night they never rested saying: ‘Holy holy holy, Lord God almighty - the One who was and the One who is and the One who will come’ ” (Revelation 4:8 NQ) And 84 years before the writing of the text of “Holy, Holy, Holy,” Charles Jennens was inspired by the Book of Revelation as he wrote the text to what would become G. F. Handel’s Messiah. Jennens had worked with Handel earlier, but according to musicologist Donald Burrows, Jennens had a dream about this new text. In a letter to his friend Edward Holdsworth, Jennens said: “I hope Handel will lay out his whole Genius & Skill upon it, that the Composition may excell all his former Compositions, as the Subject excells every other subject. The Subject is Messiah.”

The final movement of Messiah is comprised of 3 choruses: “Worthy Is the Lamb That Was Slain,” “Blessing and Honor,” and “Amen.” The King James Version, completed in 1611, was Jennens’ resource: “And I beheld, and I heard the voice of many angels round about the throne and the beasts and the elders: and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands; saying with a loud voice, Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing. And every creature which is in heaven, and on the earth, and under the earth, and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, heard I saying, Blessing, and honour, and glory, and power, be unto him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb for ever and ever” (Revelation 5:11-13 KJV).

May we be blessed as we use psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs – both old and new – to praise our God.

Loving God, We come before you as your people, as people called to the vocation of love. Enliven our hearts if darkness has overtaken our hope, and let us enjoy peace with God and one another.

Whether we see children being caged, whether we hear threats of war, whether we sense riots and violence brimming in the cauldron of our lives, we ask that you—Holy Spirit—would be manifested in our daily lives. Give us hope as we struggle. Give us peace as we tarry. Give us joy as we anticipate.

May we be a people who embody what the Psalmist says in Psalm 112: a people that “shine in the dark for others who do right,” where we are known by our mercy and not our lust for political power and dominance. Where our vocation of love is highlighted not merely by our words but by our actions as followers of Jesus Christ.

May we, as the body of Christ, pray the prayer of St. John Chrysostom (349-407 CE) when he writes: “Prayer is a precious way of communicating with God, it gladdens the soul and gives repose to its affections. You should not think of prayer as being a matter of words. It is a desire for God, an indescribable devotion, not of human origin, but the gift of God’s grace” (Homily 6 on Prayer).

As we continue as a people who hunger for God, may we be faithful to our calling. As our fears and anguish are cast into the sea, never to dominate our lives and thoughts, may our sins also be removed by the fire of God’s loving holiness, which calls us to repentance and kindness to all—especially those who are not kind or generous. God, as you have loved us, so to may we love others with the same reckless abandon that is illustrated by the Cross.

May we remember the Cross not only as a place of godlessness and defeat, but rather as a place where the godlessness of this present age is seen for what it is, and through this ‘dark night of the soul’ may we see God for who God truly is. The One who loves, then and now and forever more. The One who forgives and beckons us with the call of “do not be afraid.”

Finally, To quote St. John Chrysostom once again: “To set about this prayer, paint the house of your soul with modesty and lowliness and make it splendid with the light of justice. Adorn it with the beaten gold of good works and, for walls and stones, embellish it assiduously with faith and generosity.

Above all, place prayer on top of this house as its roof so that the complete building may be ready for the Lord. Thus he will be received in a splendid royal house and by grace his image will already be settled in your soul” (Homily 6 on Prayer).

May it be so with us, and may we go and fulfill our vocation of love.

NIGERIA

www.persecution.com (Voice of the Martyrs) On May 28, 17 members of Boko Haram surrendered to the Nigerian military after President Muhammadu Buhari offered amnesty to any fighters willing to turn in their weapons and seek peace. Those who surrendered said they had been forced to join Boko Haram after their town was raided four years ago. The men asked forgiveness for the pain they have inflicted on others.

Pray that these men will surrender to Jesus and be overwhelmed by his mercy and grace. Pray that many more fighters will surrender their weapons and seek peace. Pray that the millions of Nigerians who have been harmed by Boko Haram will receive God’s peace and that Christians in the north will continue to share God’s love.

LAOS

(Voice of the Martyrs and Human Rights Watch) Voice of the Martyrs is concerned about a recent Decree on Associations that requires approval from various government agencies before a meeting can be held. If the meeting is held without all the necessary approvals, then it is illegal and those involved can be arrested and the organization can be dissolved. This law applies not only to political gatherings, but also to religious meetings, though it seems to be only enforced against minority religions such as Christianity. Pray that pressure from various organizations would cause the government of Laos to repeal or revise this law. Pray that it would not be used as a tool to limit Christian activity but that Christians would be free to gather for prayer, worship, funerals, and other meetings.

CENTRAL AMERICA

www.internationalministries.org A total of $8500 in emergency relief money from One Great Hour of Sharing has been allocated to International Ministries to help respond to both the volcanic eruption in Guatemala and the ongoing political unrest in Nicaragua. The eruption of the “Volcano of Fire” in June left over 300 people dead and displaced entire villages. The Ecumenical Council of Churches in Guatemala is offering direct assistance to the victims and will also be helping provide food into the future. Pray that relief can get to those who need it most and that churches can be on the forefront of the relief effort. Nicaragua has been rocked for months by protests against president Daniel Ortega, who has been in power since 2006. According to The Guardian, over 300 people have been killed by government forces or government-aligned paramilitaries. This violence is what kept our Nicaragua dental team from traveling this summer. According to IM, David and Lauar Parajon are still safe, but the political crisis has created some divisions among the staff at AMOS. Pray that the government would respect the right of its citizens to protest. Pray for a peaceful resolution of this crisis. Pray for unity among Christians so that ministry to the needy in Nicaragua can continue to move forward.

She remembers answering that she knew it was wrong to pinch her sister and he seemed satisfied. She admits to being disappointed at her baptism because she expected to have another vision.

She met Nicholas Quient in her last year at Biola. And that is part of history.

Allison’s favorite Bible verse is Philippians 1:21 For me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. (RSV) For her this means that Christ animates everything and gives motivation to everyone as well as being someone worth both living and dying for.

Her favorite hymns include Be Thou My Vision and “Lift Every Voice and Sing” by James Weldon Johnson. This last song broadens her own outlook because it comes from the African-American community. Allison was born in Southern California. Her family goes back nine generations in the area. While she was growing up, her family moved between Duarte, San Gabriel, and Orange County. She graduated from Capistrano Valley Christian High School.

Her father was a successful businessman who became a pastor while Allison was in elementary school. Her mother taught lower elementary grades during this time. She has three sisters who live in Long Beach, California: Valerie, Tracy, and Kathy.

Allison’s first memory of church is the Catholic mass. She became aware that at the end of the service, the grown-ups got crackers and the celebrant got a drink. This didn’t seem fair to her – as it doesn’t to most children before they are old enough to understand sacred things.

She was baptized by emersion when she was 5 years old at Marina Cathedral, a member of a Baptist Association. She said she made the decision after a ‘fire and brimstone’ sermon when she had a vision of light. The pastor questioned her for what seemed a long time about whether or not she knew

Allison’s favorite Bible story is that of Moses. She sees him as someone who was directionless, whom God picked (speech impediment and all) to do miracles and to save His people.

She found herself feeling very close to Christ during a tough time at work. It was a time when some of her co-workers were spreading hurtful gossip and others were choosing to believe it. She felt herself being marginalized. She says God spoke to her heart telling her not to worry and reminded her how He had protected her other times when she had been bullied and reminding her how He had been with her then and would be with her in the current situation. He also reminded her of how much she had grown and helped her to be kind even though neither the people or the situation changed.

Anyhoo, I developed a love for art and storytelling from a young age, starting from drawing on my childhood home’s walls. During my time as an Art major at the Claremont Colleges, I applied these passions to refining my craft in graphic design and narrative art, culminating in graphic novels and short fiction. I look forward to serving the First Baptist Church of Redlands and its mission.

NEW WEEKLY SINGING TIME TO BEGIN Starting on Thursday, September 6, there will be a weekly practice time for singers interested in sharing music in worship as a part of FBC’s Worship Ensemble. This practice is open to all. It will be in Field Hall (Choir Room) and will be from 6:45 – 7:30 pm. Childcare is available. At these Thursday evening practices, we will practice the music that will be led by the Worship Ensemble in worship on Sunday mornings. Also, we will learn Special Music on Thursday evenings in preparation for music shared in worship by the Worship Ensemble. And that will include solos, duets, and small group selections. We want your ideas for music that the Worship Ensemble will lead and share. You are invited to come as often as you wish. And you can sing on Thursday evenings only, if that is your wish. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn new songs and to build friendships. And our time together will have the same goal as Paul the Apostle had for the church in Rome: “May the God of endurance and encouragement give us the same attitude toward each other, similar to Christ Jesus’ attitude. That way we can glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ together with one voice.”

2 T. vinegar 2 T. brown sugar 1 T. basil ½ t. nutmeg 1 16-oz. can peach (or apricot) halves, drained Shake chicken pieces in bag with flour, salt and pepper; brown in butter and oil. Place browned chicken in greased 3-qt. casserole dish. Combine orange juice with vinegar, sugar, basil, and nutmeg, and pour mixture over chicken. Cover and bake 375 degrees F. for one hour and 15 minutes, or until tender. Baste often. Then place peach or apricot halves between chicken pieces, baste well, and bake uncovered for 15 minutes longer. Serves 6.
