APRIL 2018 For a long time I thought that Easter was over on Monday.

After all there was all this activity of Holy Week and then Easter Day—the big worship service, Easter dinner with family and/or friends, a nap sometime in the afternoon and whatever “special” that would be on TV that night (often “The Ten Commandments” or “The Sound of Music”---this time it was “Jesus Christ Superstar” with John Legend). Monday morning we wake up and go about life as usual—though often pastors wake up and go back to bed. But Easter Day is only the beginning of a season that goes until Pentecost.

This season, Eastertide, is a time in the liturgical year to explore the ramifications of the resurrection of Jesus from the dead. It is a time, after a season of self-reflection, to celebrate LIFE—powerful life which comes from knowing that Christ defeated sin and death so that we may have LIFE and that life is ABUNDANT life.

So what does that look like for you and for me? What does it look like for the followers of Jesus who gather at First Baptist Church of Redlands?

What would happen if we woke up every morning and took advantage of the resources that we have to connect with God on that day? What if we approached life with the foundational understanding that we follow someone who has defeated sin and death?

Past, Present, and Future A LOOK AT FBCR’S HISTORY AND WHAT LIES AHEAD

You may remember hearing some of these articles during a previous Sunday worship service.

Since people enjoyed it, we thought it might be a good idea to publish them in the Tapestry!

“Church History” - by Lisa Olson In our series of remembering the history of the church, I’ve been asked to describe the relationship of First Baptist with the University of Redlands. Jasper Newton Field, the pastor of First Baptist Church starting in 1906, was instrumental in persuading the Southern California Baptist Convention and the Board of Trade (now called the Chamber of Commerce) to establish a college in Redlands. A Baptist committee tasked with evaluating potential locations seriously considered Azusa, Pasadena, Riverside, and Redlands. The mayor of Redlands reassured the committee that “the heat was not as tiring as some would have the commission believe.”

The citizens of Redlands offered to raise $100,000 as well as offered 40 acres of land. The Baptists were supposed to raise $240,000. Jasper Newton Field took a leave of absence from the church to raise funds, and in 1907 a Board of Trustees was elected. In January of 1909, Field was elected the first President of the University. Our current Field Hall is named after him.

The University of Redlands began offering classes on September 30, 1909, using twenty of our Sunday school classrooms until the buildings on campus were ready. The church kitchen was used as a physics laboratory. Tuition was $50 a semester. Classes were held at the church until the Administration building was opened on January 27, 1910.

The University of Redlands was never considered strictly denominational; although it was “fathered” by the Baptists, citizens from other local churches were involved from the beginning, and Field stated “While it is a Baptist institution, let it be a school where children of other denominations can come without having their denominational preferences interfered with in the least.” Until the 1950s, the U of R had explicit curricular goals regarding Christian beliefs. How distinctly Baptist those expectations were, however, had been a source of tension for decades. President George Armacost recruited board members who did not feel so tied to Baptist traditions, and changed the admissions process to not give so much preference to Baptist students.

Still, Baptists are connected to the University to this day. Omer E. Robbins was an American Baptist lay leader and a Detroit businessman. He was a member of the University’s Board of Trustees and died in 1973. He endowed the Chaplaincy at the University that is currently held

by Dr. John Walsh, as well as our church’s Omer E. Robbins fund which has been used to support ministries on the U of R campus.

And if you haven’t ever looked at the stained glass window toward the front on the east wall of our sanctuary, make sure to take a look soon. It was made in 1952 and is called “Christ over Redlands,” and will always remind us of the relationship between this church and the University.

a Behold, a New Thing! a

Now, I like new. My experience with new things is that they are frequently more efficient, shinier, and more useful; examples might be: a toaster oven, a refrigerator, a new car.

I think I’m aware of some new offerings in entertainment; examples are: Star Wars Episode VIII, the song “This Is Me” from the film The Greatest Showman, and the new book: Hear My Heart by Billy Graham.

But we read about things that are new in scripture that are much more profound, much more relevant to our lives, much more insightful about whom this God is that we worship. The Psalmist writes, “Sing to him a new song” (Psalm 33:3 NRSV). And again, “O sing to the Lord a new song” (Psalm 96:1 NRSV). And again, “I will sing a new song to you, O God” (Psalm 144:9 NRSV).

The title of the interfaith convocation I attended last month was: “Behold! A New Thing.” It was the opening event of the American Choral Directors Association Western Region conference, and I am very appreciative to First Baptist Church for supporting me in my attendance there.

Some of those same scriptures that inspired us that night also provided inspiration at our time of meditation at a Worship Choir practice after that event. The scripture that was the basis for this convocation is Isaiah 43:19.

“Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert” (Isaiah 43:19 KJV). Even as Isaiah foretold of the Babylonian exile of the Hebrew people, he told of God’s protective love and care for the people. Here is what

Barnes’ Notes on the Bible says about this passage: “Something that has not hitherto occurred, some unheard of and wonderful event, that shall far surpass all that he had formerly done. It shall spring up as the grass does from the earth; or it shall bud forth like the opening leaves and flowers.

The prophet describes the anxious care which God would show in protecting his people.”

A prophet that came soon after Isaiah was Ezekiel. Hear again these exciting words: “The hand of the Lord came upon me, and he brought me out by the spirit of the Lord and set me down in the middle of a valley; it was full of bones. He led me all around them; there were very many lying in the valley, and they were very dry.

He said to me, ‘Mortal, can these bones live?’ I answered, ‘O Lord God, you know.’ Then he said to me, ‘Prophesy to these bones, and say to them: O dry bones, hear the word of the Lord. Thus says the Lord God to these bones: I will cause breath to enter you, and you shall live.’ So I prophesied as I had been commanded; and as I prophesied, suddenly there was a noise, a rattling, and the bones came together, bone to its bone. I looked, and there were sinews on them, and flesh had come upon them, and skin had covered them; but there was no breath in them.

Then he said to me, ‘Prophesy to

the breath, prophesy, mortal, and say to the breath: Thus says the Lord God: Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe upon these slain, that they may live.’ I prophesied as he commanded me, and the breath came into them, and they lived, and stood on their feet, a vast multitude” (Ezekiel 37:1-10 NRSV).

And we just celebrated Easter!

What a joyous day! And we remember these words from the revelation of Jesus Christ to his servant John: “Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, ‘Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.’ He who was seated on the throne said, ‘I am making everything new!’ ” (Revelation 21:1-5a NRSV) There it is again: NEW! May we discern and respond to those new things, that new style, and the specific new ways that God wishes to use our church to be the salt and light in God’s kingdom which is here and now.

Worldwide Prayer Concerns

“But recall those earlier days when, after you had been enlightened, you endured a hard struggle with sufferings, sometimes being publicly exposed to abuse and persecution, and sometimes being partners with those so treated.” –Hebrews 10:32-33 Here are three stories that look back on how God has worked over many years--may these stories challenge and inspire us to take stock of how God wants to use us to bless others in 2018.

Syria

World Vision and Los Angeles Times March marked 7 years since the Syrian civil war began, touching off a refugee crisis that continues to affect millions of people. Attempts to broker a ceasefire have consistently failed as both sides refuse to give up. In the month of March, a siege and military offensive in east Ghouta killed over 1,300 civilians and wounded 5,000 more.

Other countries have gotten involved and the people of Syria are caught in the middle of this war by proxy that has dragged on and on. Imagine if your family had to flee your home and you had lived as a refugee for the past 7 years. Most estimates place the number displaced at around 11 million, which is about half of the pre-war population.

Additionally, estimates are that about half of the refugees are children. If you were a baby who had just been born when your family fled, you would be old enough to go to school, but you might not have the chance, because you are having to work to help your family survive. Pray for peace in Syria so that families can return to their homeland.

Pray for families to find hope even as they struggle to survive. Pray that Christians can demonstrate Christ’s love as they reach out to help Syrian refugees. Pray that these people would not be forgotten.

North Korea

Washington Post (accessed via Persecution.org) It was an announcement that shocked the world: Donald Trump agreed to sit down for a face to face meeting with Kim Jong Un. While the meeting still is in the planning stages, many are hopeful that this may lead to a breakthrough. And the families of three Americans who are imprisoned in North Korea are hopeful that the prisoners may be released as a sign of goodwill, since prior visits by senior American statesmen have led to Americans coming home. Pray for Kim Dong Chul, Tony Kim, and Kim Hak Song. And remember to pray for the people of North Korea who are suffering under an oppressive government regime.

Human Trafficking

www.internationalministries.org and LA Times Pray for the work of Lauran Bethell, our International Ministries Global Servant and advisor who helps fight human trafficking around the world. Pray for Jeni Pedzinski, who is working at the New Life Center in Thailand that helps women who have been trafficked. Jeni is needing to raise more support in order to remain out on the mission field, so please pray that those resources will be provided for her. Human trafficking is an international issue that occurs even here in California. In January, a statewide sting led by the LA County Regional Human Trafficking Task Force rescued 56 victims of trafficking and resulted in over 500 arrests. Pray that those who are at risk of being trafficked would be found by the people who want to help them rather than by those who would exploit them.

Get To Know: Sunny Hyon

Sunny Hyon was born in the UCLA hospital in Westwood, California. She grew up in Pacific Palisades and Malibu. Like Kay Kallendar, she went to Santa Monica High School, and they shared a favorite English teacher.

She grew up with two younger brothers. One, Sung, is a psychiatrist at Kaiser Hospital in Pasadena. The other, John, works for Fitbit in San Francisco.

It wasn’t until college that Sunny began to seriously explore the possibility of a God of love.

This exploration continued through her early professional life. She came to understand the human condition and how faith can be an umbrella concept to hold human experience together.

In those seminal years, she met people from different faiths and cultural backgrounds and began to understand the legitimacy of many of those different experiences. As she matured, she began to realize the breadth of human experience and how truth could be contained in each; that it was always more complex than any one traditional religious concept can contain. This growth has continued throughout her professional life.

Her favorite hymn is “Blessed Be Your Name.” She values its presentation of God being present in both the positive and negative experiences of life.

Psalm 16:6 in the NIV is her favorite Scripture passage:

“The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; Surely I have a delightful Inheritance.”

Sunny likes the story of Zaccheus because it shows Jesus’ total acceptance of people who seek Him. She says her time of coming to know Christ involved accepting His radical acceptance of us. His example challenges her to try to see the good in everyone; to admit that everyone is made in God’s image; and to withhold permanent negative judgments of character based on small individual instances.

Sunny says she feels closest to God in times of trial and times of failure. She finds Him reaching back to her as she reaches out to Him.

Associate Pastor for Spiritual Formation and Community Life Candidating Weekend, April 6-8, 2018 On behalf of all the Search Committee, we thank you for the privilege of serving on your behalf as we have looked for an Associate Pastor for Spiritual Formation and Community Life. After receiving applicants from 68 people, we are honored to present to you a candidate on the weekend of April 6-8, 2018. The Search Committee unanimously invited Nicholas Quient to serve alongside us. In the “Church and Minister Agreement” we have asked you to enter into a relationship of integrity with our new pastor. That agreement says, “In awareness of the support needed for ministry together, the congregation and minister mutually agree to support one another in private and public prayer, with words of encouragement and direct Christhonoring communication in accordance with guidelines in Matthew 18.”

In order to assist you in getting to know Nicholas, here is the weekend schedule for the candidating weekend.

I listen for Your voice, oh God, desperately needing Your guidance.

Why do You not speak clearly —in a flash of lightning —with a crash of thunder —in unmistakable, majestic authority?

How much easier to know and do Your will If You would just speak to me —with a blare of angel trumpets —through the song of seraphim —something distinct and absolutely clear.

Not hearing Your voice, oh God, I agonize over choices to be made.

I pray into a paralyzing silence.

I despair of knowing Your will.

Then, remembering that I must act in faith, I make a start, take a first step, and learn these things: —that Your “still, small voice” had been speaking to my heart —that my heart, in its wisdom, heard what my foolish intellect could not.

My soul feels a burst of joy.

An awareness comes —that I have felt Your guiding hand —that I have done Your will —that I have heard Your voice in the silence.
