Pastor Melissa 2220 UPCOMING WORSHIPSUNDAY SCHEDULE DEAR CHURCH, September 11 8:15 and 10:45 Bible Teaching September9:30 ActivitiesWednesday7EveningResume
Our experience with the church deepens the more we engage. Our transformation into the way of Christ grows as we engage in service. We’d love to help you find your next step here. “What you put into life is what you get out of it.” There are no guarantees but taking a risk might be worth it. As Clint also said, “If you want a guarantee, buy a toaster.”
FIRST BAPTIST MO
CHURCH / JEFFERSON CITY,
September is a great time to engage or reengage with your church family. There are new midweek Bible studies, adult groups, and activities for children and youth. You can join the orchestra or choir or serve on one of our ministry teams. Maybe give the sport of Pickleball a try each Wednesday. You can read more about these things in this month’s Beacon. If you’ve been joining us online for worship during the pandemic, perhaps you’re ready to join us in person. Masks are welcome, and two sections are still marked for every other row seating. If not, we hope you’ll join us online!
New opportunities to build relationships, laugh, learn, sing, and serve together.
The great theologian Clint Eastwood (aka Dirty Harry) once said, “What you put into life is what you get out of it.” This quote is not an original thought to Clint, of course. I’ve heard it said many times in many ways. Yet, it is easy to forget. There are seasons in the year more invitational than others. September is one of them. We welcome new rhythms and opportunities in our homes and churches as the school year begins.

This summer, we experimented with a new Sunday schedule: one worship gathering at 9:00 am followed by Bible Study classes at 10:15 am. While this was temporary, we’ve received numerous positive comments about this schedule. As promised, we will return to two services on September 11 (8:15am and 10:45am with Bible Teaching at 9:30am.) However, we want to hear from you whether this shift back to the two-service schedule is permanent or if we return to a one-service schedule later this fall. We are providing a brief survey through end of the day Sunday, September 11. Please submit only one survey per person. Paper surveys are available in the church office, the Welcome Desk, or your Bible Teaching folders or you may complete the brief survey online at fbcjc.org/survey. You may continue to view our services online at fbcjc.org; facebook.com/fbcjc; and youtube.com/fbcjc. You may also contact the church office to receive a DVD of the service each week.

In today’s deeply divided world where discussions can quickly become heated and uncivil, churches need to learn how to talk about sensitive issues. Our society needs brave churches where people can talk about the real struggles, they are experiencing without fear of being dismissed, shamed, or judged. Brave Church helps congregations talk about contro versial topics with sensitivity to those who see the world and have experienced life differently from themselves. It guides readers to think through how they can foster conversations about such challenging topics as mental health, domestic violence, and racism. In this 4-week small-group study, we will follow the book written by pastor Elizabeth Hagan, who weaves personal and theological reflections with scripture, discussion questions, and real-world examples to move readers from exploration to action. Purchasing the book is not required but would be helpful. You can find it where most books are sold. “Brave Church” by Elizabeth Hagan.

PROJECT HOMELESS CONNECT
PHC is Friday, September 30 from 10am - 2 pm. Volunteers are needed to help serve as guides as well as clean up. To see available volunteer positions and to sign up, visit https://www.jcmo-phc.org/.
Jefferson City Project Homeless Connect (PHC) is a one-day event based on a national service model to reduce as many barriers as possible to help the homeless or near homeless become self-sufficient. Socks are always an in-demand item for our community friends experiencing homelessness. PHC is collecting new white tube socks (no heels so they’ll fit anyone) and your donation of new pairs can be dropped off in the church lobby or office. You can also drop off new washcloths in the same bins.
Several people from First Baptist are already volunteering at Common Ground, but more volunteers are needed for this unique ministry. Please contact Marlene Medin (medin.marlene@gmail.com or 573-619-1512) for more information or to see how you can get involved.
MISSION FOCUS – COMMON GROUND COMMUNITY BUILDING
Common Ground has also initiated a Families Forward program that features a year-long housing program pairing volunteer advocates with individuals and families that are either homeless or in imminent risk of homelessness and gets them into safe, secure housing. Advocates work with the family to develop a plan to sustain stable housing long-term.
MISSIONS hands on
Do you ever wonder exactly how the money collected for local missions in a special offering each month is spent? There is no shortage of local missions looking for support but one that comes to mind is celebrating its tenth anniversary in a few weeks. Common Ground Community Building began small as a collaboration of several churches providing temporary financial assistance and case management for those experiencing Operatinghardship. from its building on East Atchison, Common Ground has steadily added services over the last ten years. Limited assistance is available for larger items like rent and utilities and smaller items like birth certificates and bus passes. Occasionally, vouchers for transportation to medical appointments, or furniture are provided. Funding sources are currently 20% from individuals, 65% from churches, and 15% from grants.
You can get involved with Common Ground. Opportunities include volunteering one morning a month to answer the phone and direct walk-in traffic, helping with gardening and mowing, donating food or water to give to walkin clients, or a longer (one year) commitment to work with a family in the rehousing program.
MISSIONS - 5

First Friends (for preschoolers) and First Kids (for Kindergarteners - 5th graders) will begin on September 7th! We meet from 5:45pm - 7:00pm. Get ready for FUN as we learn about how much God loves us and how He wants us to love others too! We’ll dive into the Bible, play super fun games, and do meaningful mission projects. Invite your friends! Contact Cara at cara@fbcjc.org with any questions. Do you know a child you could invite to come to First Friends & First Kids on Wednesday evenings or Bible Study on Sunday mornings? Help us connect! 6 - CHILDREN & FAMILIES

of "faith" can feel a little mysterious and hard to grasp. After all, what is it? And how do you get it — or get more of it? Well, just like science can explain so many of the mysterious and hard-to-grasp things in the world around us, there are answers for many of the mysterious and hard-to-grasp things about faith, too. You'll learn in science class that "catalysts" are interactions that create big changes and transformations. In the same way, Scripture shows us certain changemaking "catalysts" are necessary for the transformation of our faith and the faith of others. In this four-week series from Hebrews, we'll discover that faith is a catalyst for action, the faith of others can be a catalyst on our journey, Jesus is the catalyst for a new relationship with God, and we can be a catalyst for change.
