As you may have heard, July 8 marked my 20th anniversary as your pastor. What a joy it is to serve here. I love doing life with you! I look forward to many more years together!

Over the past two decades, one of the privileges afforded me is working with so many talented, unselfish people. I hope you have had an opportunity to thank Fred Mackay for his many years as our food service coordinator. How many thousands of meals has he prepared for us and for our community friends who count on us for warm, nourishing sustenance? Fred does all this with joy. He gets the big picture. He never forgets WHY we are sharing the meals—to further our church’s mission of building community and reaching people. Another blessing of the past 20 years: How God has managed for this Royals fan to serve so long among so many Cardinals fans! Really, I love both teams. It’s just that if I have to choose….well, you know. By the way, Janet and I took some of our grandchildren to Busch Stadium recently. We got to see the Rally Cat and Yadier Molina’s grand slam. I told the kids, “You’re seeing history! You can always tell people that you were here!” As I said, I am thankful that we can peacefully co-exist, rooting for different teams. This is a testimony to our unity in Christ. As the Apostle Paul said, “There is no longer Jew or Greek, slave or free, male or female, Cardinals or Royals fans, for we are all one in Christ.” (Second Babylonians 4:18). Grace,

SETTING SAIL—Our Vision for FBC JC We launched Setting Sail on February 26, 2017, after a two-year discernment journey. You can read the full document on our website. The Setting Sail Lead Crew continues to meet regularly as we implement our dreams. Below are some updates on recent work. Praise & Worship Task Force. The team visited several congregations in Missouri this summer to experience a variety of Praise & Worship services and to visit with church staff and members. The task force will finish its last site visit September 10 and will meet late September to compile their learnings to bring forward recommendations as we seek to increase the distinctive nature of our Praise & Worship service. Spiritual Formation Leadership Team. James Preston has agreed to serve as our Spiritual Formation Coordinator. Leaders are currently being enlisted to lead various sub-teams. Guest Services Team Leader. Christine Wallace has agreed to serve as our Guest Services Coordinator. Chris will be developing a vision and teams focused on the experience guests have from the streets to the seats! Daily Devotions. September brings daily devotions from our church family to you! These devotions will coordinate with our sermon series. To sign up to receive these daily devotions, please go to www.fbcjc.org/ emails. Recreation. Gary Collins has agreed to lead a work group to study our Recreation Ministries and to assess the role of these ministries as we set sail. The group has had their first meeting. Missions. The church recently approved a motion from Missions Committee to dissolve the committee and to replace it with a newly formed Missions Leadership Team. The MLT will be a hybrid team of enlisted and church appointed individuals charged with providing vision and leadership to all FBC JC mission efforts and partnerships. Allyson Rose recently completed her first year of service as our Preschool Associate. Ms. Ally arrives early every Sunday morning to welcome our teachers, volunteers, and children to the preschool area. The children love Ms. Ally because she is kind, fun, and welcoming. Our volunteers and teachers are thankful that Ally is here all Sunday morning to provide support, monitor the safety of the preschool area, manage supplies, and greet our visitors. We appreciate Ms. Ally so much and look forward to many more wonderful years with her on our team of leaders!

7:00-9:30pm Refuge Youth Room We will meet in the Refuge youth room for instructions before heading out on a “scavenger hunt”! We will return for snacks and to see which small group claims victory! Friends in grades 7-12 are welcome.
BASECAMP—Sundays, 9:30-10:30am Basecamp (our youth Sunday School hour) meets each Sunday from 9:30-10:30am in the Refuge Youth Room on the 2nd floor. We serve donuts each Sunday and we do a mixture of activities - some large group, some small group. In September, we will discuss some of our basic Christian beliefs about God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit and Scripture. We won’t meet on September 17 due to the 20th Anniversary Celebration for our pastor, Doyle Sager!
SOULED OUT—Wednesdays, 6:00-7:30pm Souled Out is our midweek program and kicks off on September 6. We meet on Wednesdays from 67:30pm in the Refuge Youth Room. Each Wednesday we start with some mixers/games followed by worship and then small groups the last 40 minutes. Its the best night of the week! Our September theme is “How to Be Awesome!”. We all want to be awesome at life. For some of us, being awesome means getting famous, making money, or having power. God’s version of living an awesome life, though, is a little different.

RU is designed to move students from an introduction to Refuge Youth Ministry and First Baptist Church, to a focus on spiritual formation and ending with a year focus on discovering and using their gifts and passions for the community, church and the Lord. There are four courses. RU101 and RU301 will be offered each fall and RU201 and RU401 will be offered each spring. The Tuesday Morning Ladies Prayer Group & Book Study begins on Tuesday, September 12th at 9:30am. Join us for our first meeting at the home of Anita Walden, 1818 Del Cerro Drive. Glory Days by Max Lucado will be studied. Meetings will continue on Tuesdays, same time in Room 101 at FBC.
Connections Bible Study for women will be studying We Saved You a Seat: 7 Practical Ways to Find & Keep Lasting Friendships by Lisa-Jo Baker. This group meets Friday mornings at 9:30am in the café, beginning Sept. 8th. Please call Margaret Craighead at 573.301.3352 to register.
MISSIONS PROJECT HOMELESS CONNECT is a one day event, hosted on the Capitol Street campuses of First United Methodist Church, First Baptist Church and First Christian Church, based on a national service model designed to eliminate as many barriers as possible that keep people homeless or in a state of near-homelessness. Friday, October 20, will be our third annual event in Jefferson City. Donations Needed: New or gently used clothing and shoes; New Adult white socks; New white washcloths; toiletries for care kits (deodorant, fingernail clippers, combs, adhesive bandages, razors, and feminine hygiene products. Items can be dropped off at the FBC gym on September 9th from 10am—1pm. Volunteers Needed: To register to volunteer on Thursday, October 19, or Friday, October 20, please go to http://jcprojecthomelessconnect.weebly.com/.
Volunteers are needed for our partnership with South Elementary School. We are looking for mentors, for volunteers to help students with reading and for people willing to help shop for South School supplies. Fred Mackay has served as our Food Service Director for over 15 years. Because of some current health issues, he will no longer be able to serve our church in this capacity. We are incredibly grateful for his faithful service in leading the preparation of thousands of meals over these years.
