Legacy: Another Mission Beyond the Church Walls BY THERESA McCLELLAN First Baptist Church Jefferson City has 17 adult Bible study classes that meet on Sunday mornings and each class is distinct in many ways. Clever and spiritual monikers capture the scope, vibe or uniqueness of the group gathered. Legacy is one of them. This dynamic, humble group of mission-minded believers recently shared details of their ongoing partnership with Windermere Baptist Conference Center. Class members “lit up” at the mention of this partnership, but quickly deferred to Windermere, its heritage, programs and ability to change lives, rather than speak of their contributions. “We just enjoy doing the work, because we know what and who it is done for. Our labor saves Windermere and allows the work to be completed,” shared Sammie Willhite. A worthy goal considering the scope of the Windermere property and mission. The Windermere website cites its 55-year history of providing a place for individuals, groups and families to draw closer to God and to each other. They provide year-round Graham Williams paints in one of full service facilities Windermere’s Dining Hall restrooms. for conferences, camps and seminars, as well as family outings and reunions. Windermere can accommodate groups from 2 to 2,100. All in facilities that must be maintained.

South Dakota Mission Trip. Pray for our team of 14 church members traveling to Pine Ridge Reservation to serve with our Lakota partners.

Graham Williams shared that their partnership began several years ago as they signed on as summer volunteers helping in the kitchen, cutting grass and splitting wood. When the need for hands-on repair and restoration in the off-season revealed itself, a new mission was born. Legacy members ran with it. They have cleaned, glazed, painted and repaired plaster. They’ve done basic plumbing and Clif Jett paints a bathroom roofing. They have repaired, wall at Windermere. replaced and refurbishes several Windermere facilities ranging from family cabins to the president’s home. Despite his experience in roofing and carpentry, Don Colter laughed, “We are all Jack of all trades and master of none.” Cliff Jett, retired highway engineer, added that “We are willing to try anything and match skills to the needs at hand.” If they need assistance or guidance, they call on other FBCJC members. Legacy is defined as a bequest or a gift. It’s fitting the volunteer page at Windermere cites the following scripture and reflects the “gifts” that FBCJC’s Legacy shares with Windermere: Therefore, my dear brothers, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord. Because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.
