First Baptist Friendship Singers Minister in the Big Easy BY THERESA McCLELLAN This writer can’t carry a tune in a bucket, but perhaps if she could keep up with this vibrant group, she could carry luggage and join the Friendship Singers on their next mission trip. Bible study + ministry + Southern eats + fun folks equaled one good time as 38 members of FBCJC’s senior adult choir traveled to New Orleans May 2-9. Sightseeing, concerts, Bible study and observance of the Lord’s Supper (while on the moving bus!) led by Jim Nelson and deacons rounded out their journey. Led by FBCJC’s Associate Pastor of Worship Rod Maples, the Friendship Singers are a group of youngat-heart folks aged 60 and above. Prerequisite skills are passion for the Lord, music and the people that they minister to. As June Martin shared, “Rod, I’m not really a singer but I get blessed by the people we sing with and also those we sing for. But primarily I want God to know what is in my heart although it may not be in my voice. Thank you!” And sing they did. At the Baptist Home in Ironton, the VA Medical Center in Jackson, Miss., and at the St. Francis Villa care facility in River Ridge, La. They Rod Maples and Bob Duggar share a led worship Sunday song with the crowd. morning at Calvary Baptist Church in Silver Creek, Miss., a church where Rod served while attending seminary.

Youth Mission Trip to Detroit. Pray for our team of 69 youth and adults serving in Detroit this week. Join us July 17 at 5 p.m. for a homecoming concert.

On long travel days, Sharon Nelson led Bible studies on the theme of Growing in Christ Jesus using Philippians 2:5: “Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus.” And in keeping with our Imagine If emphasis, asked the team to “imagine” what they all might “look like” if they were to “have the mind of Christ.” Copies of devotionals to use during personal quiet time were provided. According to Nelson, “Most of us would agree that the most memorable part of the trip was sharing in worship at the New Orleans Mission on Thursday evening. We went there hoping to bless the residents with our music and left having been blessed by their presence—and God’s presence.” The Friendship Friendship Singers sharing in music at the Singers are on New Orleans Mission. summer break until Aug. 8 when they will return to Monday rehearsals and gear up for their fall programs. There is typically a winter break and then preparation begins for spring ministry culminating in their annual week-long mission trip. For information, please contact Rod Maples, Associate Pastor of Worship, at rod@fbcjc.org or 573.634.3603. The 2017 trip destination will be San Antonio, Texas. P.S. As in any Baptist function, food was not slighted. I heard Cracker Barrel, Arnaud’s, Café du Monde, Chartres House and Andy’s Frozen Custard were in the mix!
