FBCJC Missions: As Personal as Each Member Every person is a missionary and every place is a mission field

On the FBC mission page of our website you find: “At First Baptist, we have an abiding desire and commitment to reach Jefferson City, Missouri, and beyond with the love of Jesus Christ. We strongly believe every person is a missionary and every place is a mission field.” If you delve further you will find a litany of opportunities. You might also find an explanation of “People over Projects.” It isn’t always about financial resources and the ability to build, paint, cook and lift. Sometimes it is about being the right person and a commitment to serve at the right time. This is never more evident than in FBC’s partnership that began in 2008 with Wings as Eagles Ministries (WAEM) on the Pine Ridge Reservation in southwest South Dakota. A team of 14 including members of our Hispanic congregation, Familia Cristiana Internacional, traveled to Pine Ridge in December to support the holiday missions of WAEM’s Dream Center. Making her seventh journey was Cyndi Tandy. At the invitation of the Tandys, two reservation residents returned to Missouri for the holidays. These young Lakota men are exceptional representatives of the work of the Dream Center. Jacob Swallow is in a Job Corps construction and high school diploma program. Natathan Mesteth is in college and one of 7% of Lakota youth to receive his high school diploma. “I was called by God to work with Nate 4 years ago,” says Cyndi with a grin. “Cyndi is cool and John, her husband, has to be the strongest man on earth,” quips Nate with a smile. They enjoyed a trip to the Gateway Arch in St Louis. Faces turned somber as they cited the trip across the river to East St Louis. They found it much the same as the reservation only in a compact, cityscape. Stark, trash-ridden and a place left behind without hope: another mission field. Brian Dodge, a teacher and resident of Pine Ridge, traveled to Jefferson City to take Jacob and Nate home and echoed the challenges of life on the reservation. When asked how we at First Baptist can help he said, “Continue to pay it forward. Help the children. They are our hope.” People over projects, relationships…. every person is a missionary and every place is a mission field.
