Camping Adventures Lead Children To Worship God BY THERESA McCLELLAN What do caves, basketball and the House of Hope Home in Kenya have in common? All were a part of the fun, ministry and action-packed 2016 editions of FBCJC’s Vacation Bible Camp and Sports Crusaders Camp. During the week of June 20, the church building and gym were buzzing with excitement as 103 youth and adult volunteers guided VBC children enjoy morning worship. 103 children to learn about Jesus during CaveQuest, the 2016 VBC theme. There was something for everyone including quiet times mimicking the sweet images of children at Jesus’ feet for stories and study. There were angelic times when voices combined daily to sing, “He is the Light.” Singing together in worship was a favorite for Olivia Petty, a youth crew member. You can view a short video of worship at www.vimeo.com/fbcjc/vbc16. There were high-energy, raucous times as well. Landon Carney, a fifth grader, served as a helper. Carney didn’t realize that being a “human jungle gym” was part of the gig when he was enlisted to assist with camp but he enjoyed helping with the younger campers. Landon and a There were also crafts. When asked friend enjoy a day of VBC. the best part about camp, six-year-old
Mackenna Longanecker smiled, “The Imagination Stations. We got to do cool crafts.” Even snacks were creative. Peach halves with pretzel sticks imitating “the light” were served one morning. Each day a different group of campers assisted in snack preparation. The week of VBC culminated as campers “shined the light of Jesus” with the $310 they collected in hand-made banks at home. This money has been sent to our Kenyan mission partners, Joel and Susan Karanja, for their new home. The lessons learned continue long after the decorations are put away and the children go home. Forty campers also learned the value of hard work and Superhero kids take a break during good sportmanship Basketball Camp for a photo. as participants in the Sports Crusaders Basketball Camp each afternoon. Under the leadership of four team members from the Crusaders organization, children learned how to dribble, pass and shoot. Campers also learned the importance of practice and discipline in order to grow as basketball players. Each afternoon the children would take a break from their drills in order to learn about God’s love through team devotions. Whether in a cave, on a basketball court or in a house in Kenya, the love of God is always at work transforming lives of all ages.
