OCTOBER
DEAR CHURCH,
One of the things I do as a wedding officiant is take responsibility for the marriage license. At the rehearsal dinner, I secure it from the bride and groom so they can focus on the hundred remaining items on their to-do list before saying, “I do.” After the wedding, I secure the required signatures, seal the envelope, and guard it with my life until I hand deliver it to the post office on the next business day. I don’t drop it in a mailbox. The bride and groom have entrusted me with this official document required to be filed in a certain way in a specific time frame so other essential things can happen. If I fail to steward my job well now, I create future problems for all of us.
On October 16, we will launch our fall stewardship series entitled “Entrusted.” Gospel stewardship
encompasses everything, not just our finances. God has entrusted us with gifts, resources, opportunities, stories, relationships, and more. Everything we have has been given to us to steward in a way consistent with the kingdom of God.
In this series, we’ll talk about being good guardians and investors of our vocations, creation, gifts, wealth, and the gospel. God has put these precious things into our care and protection for God’s glory and the benefit of others. Todd Pridemore, our interim preacher, and I look forward to diving into this series with you as we reflect on God’s invitation to partner to make God’s kingdom known.

Seeing Through the Eyes of Jesus calls us back to the central focus of our Christian faith, the Risen and Living Jesus! This new resource invites congregations into deeper faithfulness with each other, equips communities to offer a bold and positive witness to the risen Jesus, and transforms us individually and corporately while we co-labor with God to transform the world.
There will be a 15-minute weekly video along with a discussion. Fun fact: One of the video narrators each week is Hannah Coe, former Pastor of Families & Faith Formation. The Cooperative Baptist Fellowship produced this curriculum.

MISSIONS hands on
A RETURN TO KENYA
Six participants traveled to Kenya in June on our church’s mission trip to visit our partners after a two-year break due to Covid-19. Co-leaders Rand Swanigan and Melissa Hatfield traveled with four participants (Kris Crawford, Christina Hudson, Blake Meredith, and Josh Pridemore) who were all new to Kenya and three new to international mission experiences.
Our partnering organization, Oasis for Orphans (o4o.org), serves orphaned children in Kenya at three different shelters, including the Well, our partner home and school. Oasis utilizes a unique model to develop kids holistically.
The program gives children hope and molds them into leaders in their communities and for the Kingdom.
During our time at the Well, we built relationships with the children and the staff at the home and school. We constructed bleachers for their new basketball court. We taught physical education classes, led reading comprehension activities, and introduced the preschoolers to fun, educational craft projects. Each day allowed for some time to visit as we ate lunch and porridge on the grass and organized pick-up games of basketball and futball (soccer). We spoke of the love of Jesus in words and action. They did, too.
The US team bonded over hours of travel, delicious meals, evening games, and a beautiful safari at Mara West. They represented Christ and our church beautifully from beginning to end.
We are grateful for the excellent work Oasis is doing at the Well. The children are well cared for and nurtured in love and Christ. New dorms are under construction, and plans are underway to grow the school to serve more children in the neighboring community. It is our great honor to partner with Oasis in this kingdom work in Kenya.
The dates for our 2023 trip are Friday, June 23, through Monday, July 3. The cost is TBD but estimated between $3,400-$3,600. Registration opens October 1, with a $350 deposit required by December 31, 2022. Partial scholarships are available to members of First Baptist Church. If you have questions, contact Rand Swanigan or Melissa Hatfield.
