Dear Church,
"Parts Unknown with Anthony Bourdain" was a popular television travel and food documentary series hosted by the late Anthony Bourdain. The show, which aired from 2013 to 2018, followed Bourdain as he traveled the globe exploring different cultures, cuisines, and the human experience. Bourdain's unique storytelling style combined culinary adventures with cultural immersion, providing viewers with a deeper understanding of various societies, their histories, and their food traditions. Bourdain often ventured off the beaten path, showcasing lesser-known destinations and engaging in authentic conversations with locals.
Bourdain once said, "Meals make the society, hold the fabric together in lots of ways that were charming and interesting and intoxicating to me. The perfect meal, or the best meals, occur in a context that frequently has very little to do with the food itself."
As we continue our “Meals with Jesus” series in October, I want to encourage you to invite someone to share a meal with you or your family. Maybe invite someone to join you for lunch after Sunday worship and Bible study. Perhaps someone who is new to church or new to you. Maybe someone you’ve not connected with in a while.
Each week in this series, we’re sharing recipes from church members in our Wednesday email newsletter. Take one or two of those recipes, give them a try, and invite a neighbor or coworker over for dinner. Let’s use this month to be intentional about gathering at tables to share food, stories, and friendship.
Bourdain wisely stated, “You learn a lot about someone when you share a meal
together" Jesus was a fan of meals, not for the food but for the community and conversation that occurred around the table, nurturing life-giving relationships with Christ and each other May we learn to do the same as we break bread together Now, pass the rolls

You might say that First Baptist Church’s mission trip to the Crow Creek Reservation in South Dakota last month was a story of blankets It began with two hundred blankets donated by the Miracles 4 Margaret Foundation (miracles4margaretorg) for delivery to the children of Fort Thompson It ended with a grateful family presenting a beautiful blanket to our work team on the final day of construction In the Lakota tradition, blankets represent life, and historically, buffalo skins were given to provide warmth, shelter, and other necessities for life
Between the blanket giving and receiving, there was a lot of hard work and construction know-how. Jon Schaffner, Josh Arthur, Theresa McClellan, Dale Feeler, Marlene Medin, Bob Bell, Tom Allen, Ron Medin, and Joe Gillardi teamed with the local Habitat for Humanity chapter to take over the stalled construction of a house for an older couple and their eight grandchildren who’d lost their previous home in a tornado. The first task was pouring a 20’ by 30’ concrete floor for the house, partially completed with four walls, a roof, and installed windows and doors. Hundreds of buckets of dirt were hand-carried through a doorway to prepare for the concrete pour. After the concrete was poured and set, the more skilled team members worked to improve the shortcomings of previous construction. Other team members fanned out to area residences needing weatherization before the coming winter.
A few team members also found time to visit the Tokata Youth Center, a recently completed Diamond Willow Ministries outreach where FBC teams volunteered in previous years. The Tokata Youth Center agreed to distribute the team’s two hundred blankets and received a $1,000 check from FBC to support its ministry.
A e worksite was highlighted by remarks from the president of the Lakota t g y p y elling team members that he loved them for bringing their hard work and expertise to the Crow Creek Reservation. It sounded like a phrase familiar to FBC; “see what love can do.”
A team from FBC JC will travel to Oklahoma October 12-14 to visit potential partners through the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship’s initiative, Together for Hope. Our vision is to take teams from FBC JC to Oklahoma in the summer of 2024 to work with children, relief ministries, and construction projects to benefit the communities located on Native lands in Oklahoma.
