As I have written elsewhere, this fall marks the 10th anniversary of FBC JC's dismissal from the Missouri Baptist Convention, and by extension, from the Southern Baptist Convention. During the last decade, we have been richly blessed with new state partners (Churchnet and Cooperative Baptist Fellowship Heartland) and a new national partner, Cooperative Baptist Fellowship. These entities have not only given us room to breathe and be historically free Baptists, they have also provided us with cutting-edge resources and relationships which have multiplied our ministry. It seems only fitting that this ten-year milestone should be marked by a special weekend, Friday, Oct. 21 and Sunday, Oct. 23. On the 21st, FBC JC will host our regional CBF's Heartland Fall Assembly. Friday afternoon will include breakout sessions, followed by a wonderful meal, as we recognize Harold Phillip's 20-plus years of ministry. The evening worship will be highlighted by a message from Suzii Paynter, Executive Coordinator of CBF (national), and the installation of Jeff Langford as the new CBF Heartland Coordinator. On Sunday, October 23, we have the privilege of hosting Suzii Paynter in both morning worship services. We will celebrate our rich and fruitful partnership with CBF, and hear Suzii as she brings a message from God's Word. Throughout our congregation's visioning process, we have continually heard people say that they are drawn to us because we are "a different kind of Baptist." CBF has provided a framework for that "different" but historically authentic way. As I have said many times, partnering with our larger Baptist family is an expression of humility--we can't do this by ourselves. Furthermore, participating in our historic faith tradition acknowledges that something happened before we got here! I hope you'll join me on both Friday Oct. 21 and Sunday, Oct. 23. It will be fun. Youth MINISTRY SOULED OUT - Best Night of the Week We kicked off a great year in September with over 60 youth and adults at Souled Out! SO is our Wednesday midweek program from 6:00-7:30pm in the Refuge Youth Room on 2nd floor. We play games, worship and spend about 30 minutes in small groups digging deeper into the message and life. Our October series is called “Your Move,” and it is all about our relationships with our family. Sometimes the home is the hardest place to be like Jesus! We are impatient and frustrated with our parents and we fight with our siblings. But family is family so how can we help our family be the kind of family God dreams for us? The Bible has a lot to say about this so join us as we look at how to make the best move when it comes to the people who love you and aggravate you the most - your family!
FALL RETREAT - November 11-13 Our annual Refuge Fall Retreat is coming up November 11-13 at the beautiful Logan Valley Retreat Center in Ellington, MO. More details will be mailed in October so you can register. We will load up on Friday afternoon after school and return Sunday late afternoon. UPWARD EVALUATIONS Upward is a faith-based basketball and cheerleading league for children Kindergarten through 6th grade, offered through FBC and our partner churches, First United Methodist and First Christian. The first step to participating in Upward is bringing your child(ren) to an evaluation. In September we put together boxes for the teachers at South Elementary School. Our fourth, fifth and sixth grade class shopped for items requested by teachers. Our first, second and third grade class made thank you cards for the teachers to go in their boxes. In October we will prepare to host the First Friends class for preschool buddies night. At preschool buddies, the 1st-6th graders are responsible for planning and hosting our preschool friends for a night of fun. This is one of our favorite things to do!

PARENTS NIGHT OUT We had a blast at PNO in September. We ate dinner, made our own desserts, played, made prayer beads, played some more and watched a movie. Did we mention we played? Ryan Kormann, Luke and Brooke Schrimpf and Rashaun LoGaglio for serving as our chaperones. Our next Parents Night Out will be December 16, and will be our annual Christmas Workshop. Children and adult volunteers enjoy a fun night with friends and food at Parents Night Out.

SETTING SAIL TOGETHER We are fully launched into our Setting Sail journey as we intentionally move forward from dreams to reality. Lori Hodges came to work at FBC JC in May of 1999, as our receptionist and administrative assistant. After 17-plus years with us, Lori has announced her plans to retire. October 14 will be her last day in the office. For Lori, this has never been a job. It has been a calling from God, fulfilled in big and little ways. She has patiently and lovingly kept our pastors on track, helped committee members and guests find meeting rooms and answered thousands of questions about church meals, Upward Basketball, membership records and lost and found. Because of the location of her desk, she has been the face of our church, the kind voice and compassionate ear to struggling souls who have wandered in from who-knows-where. Lori’s retirement will allow her more time to care for her husband, Denny, who is a resident at the Missouri Veterans Home in Mexico, MO. She plans to remain involved here at FBC as her schedule allows, living out her gifts and calling through volunteer service to Christ and his church. Lori goes with the gratitude, love and respect of our entire church staff and church family. We send her off with our blessing and a prayer for God to use her in this new ministry chapter of her life, just as God has in the past.
