Do you remember the Apostle Paul’s admonition? “Be not addicted to much whine.” OK, so I made that up. But from time to time, most of us need reminding that complaining is not a spiritual gift! Our Fall Stewardship emphasis is “The Daily Choice of Gratitude.” In my own spiritual journey, I am beginning to see gratitude as a daily discipline, much like prayer and Bible reading. I am grateful for Christ and His continual, saving work in my life. I am grateful to be the pastor of one of the finest churches anywhere. I am grateful for the daily courage I see in many of your lives, as you face hardship, illness, crises and even death. I am grateful for visible and exciting movement in our Setting Sail process, implementing our vision of God’s future here at FBC JC. I am also grateful for my family. This past year, Janet and I have been joined by her mother, Louise, who moved into the lower level of our house. She has enjoyed making new friends here at FBC JC. Thank you for making her feel so welcome. All in all, we are very blessed. And so I challenge you. This November, write out four or five sentences that begin, “I am grateful for…” and just see what comes into your mind and heart as you complete each sentence. We all know how bad habits stick. Why not develop a good habit--the gratitude habit? Grace,

Kristie McGonegal will be leading Wednesday Night Bible Study November 1, 8, & 15. The book “Falling Upward: A Spirituality for the Two Halves of Life” by Richard Rohr will be presented. There will be no Wednesday night activities November 22nd, and no Wednesday Night Bible Study on November 29th.

Souled Out meets on Wednesdays from 6-7:30pm in the Refuge Youth Room. Each Wednesday we start with some mixers/games followed by worship and then small groups the last 40 minutes. Its the best night of the week! The gym is open from 5:00-5:50pm for youth to hang out before Souled Out begins. Our November theme is “Who Am I?”. We all want to know who we are — what we’re good at, what we’re not-so-good at, what makes us unique, and why we matter. Unfortunately, we spend a lot of time (especially as teenagers) creating identities based on all the wrong things. In this 4-week series, we’ll discover we never fully understand who we were created to be apart from the God who created us. He’s a God who knows us, who gives us a place to belong, who helps us understand ourselves, and who helps us become everything He has created us to be.
BASECAMP meets on Sunday mornings in the Refuge Youth Room. Our November series is “Spirituality—The Less-Traveled Path.” This unit will focus on four components that are crucial to our becoming genuine disciples of Jesus Christ. Join us for donuts and small groups each Sunday morning.

Our annual community Thanksgiving Meal is Thursday, November 23, from 11am to 1 pm in the Fellowship Hall. Home deliveries can be ordered by calling the church office by November 21. If you’d like to volunteer for any of the needs below, contact the church office or complete the sign up form in your Bible teaching folders. You do not need to contact us if you plan to make pies. VOLUNTEER NEEDS: • Purchase or make apple and cherry pies to be delivered to the church office the week of Thanksgiving. • Set up on Wednesday, November 22 at 5:30pm • On Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 23: • Home Delivery Prep Team • Home Delivery Volunteers to deliver meals • Kitchen Serving Help • Greeters • Table Servers • Clean up
For a variety of reasons, we will not send a team to South Dakota this December. This means we are unable to haul Christmas Shoeboxes to the reservation. We know some of you start early on your shoeboxes and may have already gathered supplies. If you already have boxes made or supplies gathered to make a box, we will mail these to the Dream Center on Pine Ridge if you bring them to the church office by November 20. We cannot mail them after this date and insure delivery in time for their Christmas event. Since there is some expense to mailing multiple boxes, we ask that you only do this if you have already made shoeboxes or purchased supplies to make boxes.
