Our church has a feature page in each month's issue of Word & Way. The November focus is children in worship. In a recent sermon, I showed a picture of a trellis or rose arbor. A er the service, an excited six‐year‐old ran up to me and proudly handed me a picture of a trellis which he had drawn with crayons during the sermon. Did I keep that picture? You'd be er believe I did! This li le worshiper and many of his friends remind us that worship is an experience which should engage all of our senses.
Another children‐in‐worship story: One Sunday this summer, our projec on system quit working. So Rod Maples, our worship pastor, wisely started lining the words of our praise choruses (that is, he "fed" us the lines of each phrase as we came to them). After services, a parent told me that she and her husband had had a wonderful worship experience with their preschool daughter. Because she is not yet reading, their li le girl could follow Rod's oral instruc ons and more fully enter into the worship music. Again, a reminder that our typical worship some mes excludes those with reading, hearing or other language‐cultural differences or limita ons.
When I was in seminary studying worship, a fellow student (from another country) reminded the class, "Words can exclude." He challenged us to always consider heart appeal, inviting people to worship through visual images and Christian symbols, not merely through talk. Let's remember that our en re Se ng Sail process is about following God into a culturally relevant, scripturally sound future.

Speaking of a future on solid foo ng, it's that me of year‐‐stewardship awareness! We are having a very strong year financially and I want to say a sincere thank you for your faithfulness, sacrifice and generosity. You constantly amaze me and make me proud. Please be a en ve as you hear reports and as you receive a mailing of the proposed 2017 budget. A special Bible lesson is being prepared for small groups. A budget hearing is set for November 16 and the budget vote will be December 14. Please take me to engage in though ul, prayerful dialogue about your part in our great future, as we set sail together. Grace,

Christmas on Pine Ridge Our partnership with Wings as Eagles Ministry began in 2008. We take two trips to the Pine Ridge Reserva on each year. During our December trip we deliver shoe box gi s donated by FBC and other churches from across the United States. We help coordinate and run distribu on events and deliver gi s to some of the communi es on the reserva on. If you’d like to par cipate, here are some ways you can help:
Donate A Shoe Box Gi :
Children wait for their Christmas box Beginning November 6, the shoe box display will be located in during our 2015 trip the Narthex near the Welcome Center. Pick up a box, fill, wrap and return. Instruc ons can be found inside each box. Gi s are needed for children and adults. DURING THE WEEK, return to the Church Office. On Sunday, December 4 and 11, place at the front of the Sanctuary. The LAST DAY gi s will be collected is Sunday, December 11.

SOULED OUT ‐ Best Night of the Week! Souled Out is our Wednesday mid‐week program from 6:00‐7:30pm in the Refuge Youth Room on the second floor. We play games, worship and spend about 30 minutes in small groups digging deeper into the message and life.
Our November series is called “NO FILTER.” Social Media is awesome. It’s brought us some of the best inven ons in modern mes. Like the selfie, or even be er, the selfie s ck. Maybe you’re a fan of the hashtag or the GIF or weekly holidays like Throwback Thursday.
All of those were all made popular by one social network or another. And, maybe one of the best things these apps have given us is the filter. Filters are amazing. They basically change the way you see something in a picture. A quick swipe and you can instantly make your photo look brighter, dimmer, older, newer, you can change the shape of your eyes, change the color of your hair, or even swap faces with another human being! You know what we called that in the old days? Magic. Now, it’s just normal. You take a pic and you automatically start swiping to the left or the right to find filters that will make the scene be er or funnier or more interes ng.
But in the process of pos ng our lives online, other things can get filtered too, maybe even things that shouldn’t ‐ like how we see ourselves, our words, and even other people. When we can’t see a situa on clearly, it’s easy to forget how powerful our posts and pics really are. Even though the Bible doesn’t say much about which Instagram filter to use or whether screensho ng Snapchat is actually a sin, it does offer a lot of advice that’s really helpful as we navigate our social lives online. As we explore what an ancient book can teach us about modern social life, we may just find God’s plan for us isn’t to use social media LESS, but instead enjoy it MORE as we learn which things are be er with NO FILTER.
