Leadership // Sondra Allen joins our Leadership Team at the end of 2019 as our Authentic Relationships coordinator. The team consists of James Preston, Spiritual Formation Coordinator; Ron Medin, Missions Coordinator; Christine Wallace, Guest Services Director; and Kris Crawford, Communications, along with the pastors. We welcome Sondra and look forward to her leadership, helping us to practice radical hospitality, affirm everyone’s journey and celebrate the living Christ working among us. Missions // The Missions Leadership Team continues to meet monthly to fulfill its purpose of providing strategic vision and leadership for all mission efforts. We were delayed a few months on some original plans as we responded faithfully to the May 22 tornado, but we are focusing now on developing a process to evaluate current partnerships and to guide new ones. The team is bringing excellent leadership to our mission efforts as we refine our structures and systems to help us launch new endeavors in the future. Team Members: Ron Medin, Coordinator; Marty Drewel, Stewardship Leader; Marlene Medin, Engagement Leader; Rachael Preston, Local Missions Coordinator; Jim Nelson, Carolyn Swanigan, Steve Whitlock, At-Large Members. Spiritual Formation // The Spiritual Formation Team (Hannah – can you include a brief blurb for us?) Our Spiritual Formation Leadership Team (James Preston—Coordinator, Jan Watson, Stephen Mathis, Noel Blythe, Katie Jo Wheeler, and Justin Wheeler) continue to live into the congregation’s vision for Spiritual Formation: Our church family leads every person to follow the Way of Christ, discover their giftedness, and experience continual life transformation. All generations are rooted in a Biblical, hope-filled faith and experience the joy and significance of service. We are focusing heavily on the congregation’s request that we “intentionally plan for life-changing faith” by working on three major projects: leadership development, engaging our new members/visitors, and articulating a spiritual formation process with which each

person at FBC can connect. Our Writing Ministry Team continues to bless our congregation and community with seasonal devotions provided to the congregation and community. We are grateful for Sondra Allen’s willingness to offer her teaching gifts through leading our Wednesday evening adult Bible study. Facilities Renovations // In response to our Setting Sail proposal that our church look at ways to enhance our worship space for current members and future members alike, our Properties and Stewardship Committees have approved moving forward with financing an architect’s master plan for congregational consideration. Church leadership has approved the enlistment of Station 19 Architects, Inc. (station19.com) out of Minneapolis, MN, a firm which specializes in refreshing worship space of existing sanctuaries. We love the sacredness of our sanctuary, and we plan to enhance that sacred experience even more through some much-needed renovations. Renovations like making our platform and choir loft more accessible for all ages and disabilities; increasing the space of the lobby; adding more restrooms; moving the sound booth to the floor level; and warming up the sanctuary while maintaining its unique beauty. We will also look at updating Duke Chapel to make it more useful for worship, groups, weddings, and funerals, and some improvements to building entrances on the Monroe Street side of the building. The next step is for the architects to meet with various church leaders to better understand our needs and vision in order to put together proposals for our church to consider. Those proposals will be shared with various church leaderships and committees, and then, brought to the congregation for discussion and approval before any work or fundraising would begin. These are just a few highlights of intiatives and on-going work designed to help us WELCOME warmly, GROW faithfully & SERVE generously; leading people into LIFE-GIVING relationships with Christ and each other.

P R AY E R

PRACTICES FROM OUR SEPTEMBER 2019 SERIES

LECTIO DIVINA

P R AY I N G I N C O L O R

Lectio divina (sacred reading) is the practice of reading short Bible passages in a contemplative way. Reading the same passage over and over, four times, pausing between each reading, allowing the text to wash over us, focusing on a word, an image, a thought. It is ruminating, meditating, reflecting.

Praying with words is one of many ways to pray. Sometimes we cannot find the words to pray, or we feel as if we’ve run out of words. Drawing, doodling, or coloring can be an act of prayer. Use colors, shapes, lines, images, and words as you pray. Image Credit: Sybil MacBeth, Praying In Color, Kids’ Edition (2009)

The four movements of lectio divina: lectio (read): read a selected Bible verse or passage slowly meditation (meditate): read the passage a second time, then pause to meditate and listen for how the Holy Spirit speaks to you through the passage oratio (pray): read the passage a third time, then dialogue with God about the passage contemplatio (contemplate): read the passage a fourth time, then sit in silence with God

B R E AT H P R AY E R Breath prayer is an ancient prayer method done with the rhythm of your breath. It was developed to help Christ-followers “pray without ceasing” (1 Thessalonians 5:17). Breath prayer may be done silently, as a whisper, a chant, on a walk, or as a song. The first part of the prayer is prayed on the inhale; the second part of the prayer is prayed on the exhale. You can create your own breath prayer by combining a name for God and what you’d like to ask of God. Most breath prayers are about 6-8 syllables. Create a prayer that’s honest and unique to you. Example Breath Prayers: - Good Shepherd, lead me today. - Comforter, grant me peace. - Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me a sinner.

W R I T T E N P R AY E R S Reading and praying written prayers is not always a go-to prayer practice among Baptists. Yet it can provide rich prayer experiences. Traditional written prayers can be found throughout scripture-- the Psalms, and the Lord’s Prayer for example. Additional Resource for Written Prayers:

MIDWEEK Wednesdays / Refuge Rm 6-7:15p / Middle School

MIDWEEK will not meet November 27 due to the Thanksgiving break. December 1 // Youth Dessert Theater

7:45-9p / High School How many times have you compared yourself with someone else today? Seriously — see if you can count. Whether it’s their stuff, their looks, their skills, or their popularity, we can’t help but notice all the things other people have, and how those things compare to all the things we wish we had. But in this 4-week series, we’re going to focus on four things that God has given to every single one of us. You have a past, you have today, and you have a future. All three of these things make you valuable and uniquely you.

Basecamp Sundays, 9:30-10:30am / Refuge Rm Join us on Sundays for Basecamp, our Bible Teaching program. We have donuts each Sunday. In November, we’re talking about Jesus Jaw-Droppers – things Jesus taught that shocked others and challenged the culture of the day.
