The past year has brought significant change to our church family and our individual lives. Change is often difficult even when assured it will bring good things, for change is more about loss than change itself. The close companion of loss is grief, and we do well to name her and sit with her for a moment, full of grace.
UPCOMING Change is also the fertile soil from which God blooms beautiful new things! St Teresa Avila once prayed, “Let nothing upset you; let nothing startle you. All things pass; God does not change. Patience wins all it seeks. Whoever has God lacks nothing: God alone is enough.”

May 23 We grieve the loss of our beloved Lead Pastor, Doyle, along with many friends, family, and saints who died these past fourteen months. We mourn the loss of gatherings, celebrations, and hugs because of COVID. We prepare another goodbye to our amazing Pastor of Families & Faith Formation, Hannah Coe, and her sweet family as they follow God in a new calling.
God is with us and for us, church family. Nothing is a surprise to God, and none of these changes will deter God’s mission for this loving and brave congregation. Instead, these changes are invitations for us to trust God in all things, walk forward with God in patience and wisdom, and continue to see what Love can do!
With Christ’s hope and love, Change is loss, and loss brings grief and fear as what was once familiar and known is no longer.

COVID PROTOCOL UPDATES As Covid numbers improve in our community and more individuals are vaccinated, we are adjusting protocols advised by local health experts. Beginning in April, we no longer require registration. Also, chains on pews mark off every other row rather than every two rows, people will be free to seat themselves and exit rows without ushers, and cleaning routines have been adjusted. Beginning Sunday, May 9, all doors will be open on Sundays for entrance and exit. Many of our Bible Study classes will resume meeting in person. We will notify everyone closer to time about which Adult Bible Teaching classes will start on May 9 at 9:30 am. Children and Youth will resume May 9 at 9:30 am in their respective meeting areas.
While we are not entirely free from the effects and risk of Covid, we have determined with guidance that these adjustments are safe. The following are the steps we will continue to do to keep you and your neighbors safe until time to reevaluate in the near future: 1. Masks are still required in the building at all times. 2. Maintain distancing of 3 ft or more between you and others not in your family. 3. Wash your hands. 4. If you are sick or at-risk and not vaccinated, please stay home and join us for online services. Thank you to our fantastic Phase 3 volunteers who have helped us keep the doors safely open since September. A special thanks to Glenna Honich and Lisa Allen for their leadership and coordination of the Phase 3 team.
P A S T O R H A N N A H C O E R E S I G N AT I O N Pastor Hannah Coe recently resigned her position as Pastor of Families & Faith Formation to accept a call to serve as Senior Pastor of Calvary Baptist Church in Waco, Texas. Hannah’s last Sunday with us will be May 16. In late April, you should have received a letter from Pastor Hannah Coe about her call to serve as Senior Pastor of Calvary Baptist Church in Waco, Texas. If you did not, you may read this letter on our website. As Hannah expressed, we also are experiencing sadness over her leaving. We have been blessed by Hannah’s ministry to and with our church over the past six years and have seen “what love can do” through the many ways Hannah impacted lives in our FBC family. A come-and-go farewell reception for Hannah, David, Katherine, Annalina, and Ella will be held on Sunday, May 16 from 3:00 – 5:00 pm at Apple Creek at 621 Murphy Ford Road in Centertown (rain or shine). Everyone is invited. Refreshments will be served, and there will be fun activities for the children. As a part of our FBC thank-you to Hannah, we want to send her off with a card shower and love offering. A basket for your cards will be placed at the Welcome Center in the lobby beginning Sunday, May 2, and remaining through May 16. You may include a financial gift in your card (make any checks to Hannah Coe, not the church). Be sure to place your card in that basket on one of those Sundays. Or you may drop off your card at the church office, mail it, or bring it to the reception at Apple Creek. Thank you for being such a loving and affirming congregation and for making this celebration so special for Hannah and her family. T RA N S I T I O N U P DAT ES MAY 2021 TRANSITION COMMITTEE // The Transition Committee is immensely grateful for your support, encouragement, and prayers as we continue our work on your behalf. We are currently developing an interim pastor job description, which includes both preaching and administrative tasks, and fits our church’s current needs. We are also reviewing profiles of possible candidates. The following individuals have agreed to lead us in worship from May 30-June 27: Jeanie McGowan, May 30; James Preston, June 13 & 20; Todd Pridemore, June 27. Rod Maples and musicians will lead us on June 6 for Summer Music Sunday. Please pray for each of these individuals as they prepare to lead us. (Committee Members: Sharon Nelson, Chair; Susan Bell, Mandee Carney, Gary Collins, Travis Ford, Stephen Mathis) PASTOR SEARCH COMMITTEE // The following members were approved at the April 18 Quarterly Business Meeting to serve on the Pastor Search Committee: Sondra Allen, Cari Collins. Margaret Craighead, Lory Feeler, Terry Heiman, Gary Hemphill, Glenna Honich, Todd Pridemore, Rand Swanigan. The committee will meet soon to select a chair and this will be brought to the church for a vote at a future Special Called Business Meeting (Date TBD).
Missions FOOD 4 KIDS // Volunteer to Serve
First Baptist Church will participate in the summer Food 4 Kids program the week of July 26 – 30. The program provides lunches to kids during summer months when school isn’t in session. FBCJC needs a minimum of 11 volunteers each day. • 3-5 volunteers are needed to prepare sandwiches and pack lunches (10:30 – 11:30 a.m.) • 4 delivery teams are needed to deliver meals to 4 locations. A delivery team is 1 driver + 1 helper to assist with distribution. Pick up lunches around 11:45 a.m., deliver, and return to church around 1 p.m. Volunteers may sign up for one day, multiple days or the entire week. First Presbyterian Church Jefferson City is the food prep and pick up center. The program adheres to CDC guidelines and runs 7 weeks, July 5 to Aug. 20. FBCJC has been assigned the week of July 26-30 but feel free to serve additional days. Three great reasons to volunteer … It’s local! It helps kids and families!
