Where is evangelism? People some mes ask. Churches don’t have revival mee ngs like they used to. Evangelism wasn’t one of our “sails” (bold dreams) in the Se ng Sail process. Where is evangelism? In case you hadn’t no ced, culture has shi ed. A rac onal events have ceased to be effec ve in reaching nonbelievers. Family fragmenta on, parents working two or three jobs, kids’ sports being offered seven days a week—you name it. The seculariza on of culture happened right under our noses. In other words, the church found itself with a powerful Gospel but an outmoded “delivery system.” Thus, we have moved to an incarna onal model (being Christ in the world) instead of an a rac onal, program‐driven one. Accordingly, evangelism (bringing people into a growing rela onship with Jesus Christ) has become more imbedded in all we do, not simply in one program. As someone has said, evangelism isn’t one of the sails in our strategic vision; it is the en re ship! All the sails—God‐centered worship, life‐changing faith, authen c rela onships, community transforma on and global partners‐‐exist to bring people to Christ. Where has evangelism gone? It’s everywhere, imbedded in the DNA of our congrega on. Let me give some examples. One of our ladies volunteers at Common Ground, the faith‐based community center, where she teaches kni ng. As they work, she talks about the Lord and about answered prayers in her life. Ask me to count for you how many families we have reached through our preschool and children’s choirs. As I write this, an email just arrived from our Homebound Lord’s Supper Team. They just completed their work of offering communion to a nursing home. Two residents (not members here) asked about a ending FBC JC if transporta on could be provided. (ConƟnued on page 2)

PASTOR’S PEN con nued …. During our recent Youth Sunday, we heard one young man’s story of a growing faith. It began when his mother took him as a foster child and later adopted him. In our youth group, he has found Christ. Another youth shared that because his grandparents paid his way to a end the youth mission trip back in 2014, he has found Christ, the church and the joy of serving others. Another new family came to us because they have watched our church over the years, as we have stood with the marginalized and poor, advoca ng for jus ce and mercy. They wanted to be a part of that kind of family. I could go on and on. Suffice it to say—evangelism is alive and well at FBC JC. It’s just dressed in different clothes. And for those of you who say, “Spiritual renewal isn’t happening anymore,” think again. It is, but maybe not in the manner and places we might guess. You might want to read two books by Phyllis Tickle, Emergence ChrisƟanity and The Age of the Spirit. It’s my experience that the river of God’s redeeming work is always cu ng new channels. And without our programming or control, it flows where it wants to! Grace,

YOUTH WELCOME TO OUR REFUGE YOUTH INTERN We’re excited to announce Natalie Wi enberger will serve as our summer youth intern! Natalie is a sophomore candidate for a BFA in Musical Theatre at MSU. She is a life me member of the social sorority Alpha Chi Omega and has been apart of the weekly Alpha Chi bible study since August 2016. Natalie will begin in late May and will serve through the first part of August. Natalie is a member of First Bap st Church and former member of Refuge Youth. We can’t wait to welcome her back!

The Se ng Sail Lead Crew meets biweekly as we work to facilitate the implementa on of Se ng Sail, God’s vision for FBC JC. Here are updates on the work being done thus far. Appoint a Praise & Worship Task Force. The team is now in place and will hold their first
mee ng this week. Team Leaders: Heather Feeler, Kailey Leesman. Team Members: Mike Downing, Beth McGeorge, Todd Pridemore, Holly Schroer, Hanna Watson. Se ng Sail Lead Crew Liaison: Deborah Sco ; Pastoral Liaison: Rod Maples Create a Spiritual Forma on Leadership Team. Recruitment is beginning for this leadership team. Establishing a Missions Leadership Team. The responsibili es and charge of this leadership team are in the process of being finalized so recruitment can begin. Due Date: June 30 Developing a plan for on‐going devo ons wri en by church members. A team of three leaders are in place to oversee the process of producing and sharing devo ons wri en by church members. Theresa McClellan, Jeanie McGowan and James Preston have agreed to lead this ini a ve. The Lead Crew also had a wonderful mee ng with the Deacon body on April 10 and gained insight from the deacons on how to priori ze the many dreams and ini a ves from Se ng Sail. Based on their feedback, we will begin to work on inten onal measures to improve our follow up and next steps for guests and those new to FBC JC. MISSION TRIP DONATIONS We are looking for the following for our upcoming summer/fall mission trips. Reader Eyeglasses—This is for a medical mission trip to Moldova in September through The Bap st Home Founda on. Several church members are a ending. The strength need is from 1.5 to 4.0, with the majority need in the 2.5 and 3.0 strengths. Please, no prescrip on glasses. (Needed by August 20) Luggage—We are always looking for durable luggage on wheels for us to pack supplies to take on mission trips. Some stay overseas a er our trip so we are always needing to replenish our supply. (Always Needed) Children’s Educa on Toys/Games—We like to take puzzles, educa onal toys and games to our partners in Kenya. They do not need to be new but in really good condi on with all pieces. The toys should not require ba eries or any special parts or supplies. (Needed by June 14, 2017).
