J UN E FI R ST BA PTIST CHURCH / JEF F ERSON C ITY, MO
Final Update on our Conversations for the Future Three church-wide conversations in 3 months – Whew! Thanks to all of you for participating in the process known as the Intentional Interim Process. This is a program of discussions held during the interim period between pastors. In particular, it’s a process that churches who are facing daunting changes will use. Not every interim time between pastors is smooth and effortless. Many churches have multiple reasons to consider pausing long enough to sit down together to talk about how each member is feeling and to face the complicated feelings that many persons feel. A report has been given to the Pastor Search Committee to use as a reference to seek a candidate for someone to serve as our next called pastor. That report includes every continued on page 2
stray comment made in the small groups about the many issues. Here is a brief summary given to the Pastor Search Committee to help them see the big picture: · We are a church of diverse attitudes. Our diversity is on the inside of us, not the outside. “We have one of everything,” the saying goes. Diversity is good, but it can stretch the fabric of our community. · We are united in our commitment to missions. We have historically exhibited a passion for missions of all kinds. . . missions in MO, in other states, and in other countries. We fund missions. We teach missions to our kids and adults. We live and breathe missions as a great uniting influence that counters our inward diversity.
UPCOMING June 5 Summer Music Celebration – 9 am Churchwide Picnic 5-7 pm Memorial Park June 27 – July 1 Vacation Bible Camp 7:45 am – 11:45 am NEW SUMMER WORSHIP SCHEDULE (Starts June 5 through September 4) 9:00 am Combined Worship Service 10:15 – 11:15 am Bible Teaching Classes
· We want to experience practical faith in our worship. Music, the teaching of the Bible, congregational purpose and mission are typically pragmatic in experience. · We are hoping to find someone who can bridge the gaps. We need someone to recognize our diversity, embrace the width and breadth of our congregation, and help us embrace a united core. That’s pretty much it. No big reveal. No startling surprises. The power of this report is how we came to these conclusions. We paused. We gathered, and we told our truth with conviction. Now, by handing off this report, we pledge to
pray for our Pastor Search Committee that they will find the person we can embrace as our next pastor. Thanks to all of you who participated. Thanks also to the Intentional Interim Team who designed and implemented these conversations: Cari Collins, Margaret Craighead, Tonny Hammond, Sharon Nelson, Taylor Tipton, Cam Lauf, Jeanie McGowan, Lori Green, Brian Kaylor, Kailey Leesman, Ryan Kormann, Glenna Honich, Gary Hemphill, and Lory Feeler. Thanks for inviting me to join this adventure!

MISSION JC
Mission JC returned to rave reviews under the leadership of Holly Schroer and Janet Wear-Enloe. Approximately 450 volunteers from several churches participated on Sunday, April 24th. The Missions Leadership Team is gathering the names of members of First Baptist Church from among the volunteers to keep them advised of other mission opportunities throughout the year.
UKRAINE
The situation continues to be perilous for our friends in western Ukraine subjected to intermittent missile attacks as the heaviest fighting is concentrated in the eastern and southern parts of Ukraine. Together with the contributions of individuals within our congregation we have sent just over $30,000 to Ukraine to assist the thousands displaced from their homes.
AFGHAN REFUGEE RESETTLEMENT
Our efforts along with other local congregations to help nearly two dozen refugees from Afghanistan resettle in Jefferson City are going well. All Afghans are receiving medical care, the children are enrolled (and in some cases excelling) in schools, and the adult men have found employment. The men continue to take English classes and are preparing for their driver’s license exams.
TRANSFORMATIONAL HOUSING
The first tenants moved into the renovated building on Cherry Street in mid-March and all five apartments are occupied. The tenants have coaches who regularly meet with them and provide guidance on a variety of issues. “Community meals” with the tenants, their coaches, and other representatives of Transformational Housing are held each month. First Baptist will host a meal in July. Meanwhile, Transformational Housing has acquired a property on Jackson Street and will begin renovations this summer.
SOUTH DAKOTA MISSION TRIP
A team of volunteers is traveling to South Dakota in mid-July to work with the local affiliate of Habitat for Humanity. The team, led by Jeff Feeler and Cyndi Tandy, plan to touch base with our partners at Diamond Willows Ministries while in the area.
KENYA TRIP
A team of six will travel to Kenya June 18 – 28. Attending are Rand Swanigan and Melissa Hatfield, co-leaders, and four participants new to Kenya. They’ve met twice as a group and will have one more meeting in early June as they prepare for their time at the Well in Kenya after a two-year delay due to COVID.
SOUTH SCHOOL
The first week of May was Teacher Appreciation Week. Linda Wiseman coordinated a lunch for the staff of South School to honor them along with our quarterly supply boxes and donations to support achievements throughout the year.
