TRANSFORMATIONAL HOUSING This past year First Baptist joined with other local congregations in supporting Transformational Housing, a relatively new organization created in the aftermath of the 2019 tornado, to “provide quality affordable apartments for low-income families that will develop self-sufficiency through accountable relationships.” Volunteers including some from First Baptist have been renovating a house at 203 Cherry Street into a multi-unit rental building and it will be ready for occupancy in a couple of months. Construction on Cherry Street took about 18 months but the real work begins upon completion of the renovations when the task of building relationships and self-sufficiency begins. Soon families will be selected for occupancy. Each family will be assigned a pair of coaches who will cultivate relationships of encouragement and accountability to help them develop life skills needed to sustain a self-supporting lifestyle. Volunteers from First Baptist are needed to help support a renting family over a period of several months in a variety of ways including: •

Working in pairs to provide weekly coaching with a family. Training for volunteers will be provided in preparation for renter occupancy in March. Please contact Marlene Medin (medin.marlene@gmail.com) to help in this critical area.

•

Providing welcome baskets and first day meals as families move into their new apartments.

•

Hosting a group meal for renters of all five apartments twice a year

•

Committing to pray for Transformational Housing and the families it supports.

Transformational Housing seeks to be “where love for community meets hope and healing.” First Baptist has committed to a partnership in this vision. Now is the time to act on that commitment.

Thank

YO U

FBC Family –

I am thankful beyond words that God saw fit to put us together twenty-four years ago. What an incredible journey. The laughter, tears, ministry, and worship are gifts that I will forever hold in my heart! Oh, my. The “Celebration of Ministry” that you gave us was perfect. Please know that with every moment I was celebrating how God gave the gift of each one of you to me! Sherry and I want to say thank you from the bottom of our hearts for every word of encouragement, every act of kindness, and the generosity that you have shown us. We love you. ^ J A N UA RY M I DW E E K WEDNESDAYS MS (Grades 6-8) // 5:45-7 pm HS (Grades 9-12) // 7:30-9 pm Refuge Youth Room (2nd Floor) If someone asked who you are, what would you say? Maybe you’d say your name. Or maybe you’d say, “I’m a musician. A basketball player. A friend. A daughter or son. I’m a human!” Those things might be true, but have you ever felt like you’re still figuring out who you are, what you’re good at, or why you’re here? In this 4-week series, the stories of Jesus and John the Baptist, and the words of Paul, will help us see why discovering who Jesus is helps us discover who we’re meant to be. Not only is Jesus distinct from anyone who has ever lived, but God made us distinct too, with distinct gifts we can use to serve God and others, and unique distinctions that are worth celebrating.

WHAT IS THE MINISTER’S HOUSING ALLOWANCE? Each year as part of approving the Church’s budget we approve an amount for each ordained minister that represents a housing allowance. Why do we do that and what does it mean? The Internal Revenue Code (tax law) allows an ordained minister to ask the church to approve a portion of their salary to be allocated as a housing allowance. The amount each minister requests is determined based on rules set out in the tax law. Each minister calculates the allowable amount and submits that request for approval. The amount of housing allowance a minister is allowed to claim cannot exceed the lesser of 100% of compensation or actual housing expenses. Some ministers may not be able to claim all of their qualified housing allowance expenses because their compensation is less than the housing expenses. This is often the situation for part-time ministers. The amount of the approved housing allowance does not increase the amount the church pays the minister, instead it designates a portion of what they are paid as not being subject to income tax under the tax law. The bottom line is designating an amount as the housing allowance does not increase the amount the church pays our ministers, and it allows the ministers to pay for housing related expenses with tax-free money. Both parties benefit from using this provision in the tax law.
