Whether health, relationships, finances, work, or even your faith, there is perhaps at least one area of your life with some serious unknowns. If 2020 has taught us anything, it is this: we can’t always know what is coming. But facing unknowns doesn’t mean you are unknown. And being known can help us with all the unknowns. We may not know what 2021 will bring, but we do know God loves us, God knows us, and God is at work for good in all things. On January 10, we’re excited to begin a six-week sermon series titled “Known in the Unknown.” Together, we’ll look at lessons from Joseph’s life in Genesis, the first book of the Bible, to encourage us as we face the unknown, learning to trust God with our today and our tomorrows. Joseph endured many challenges in his life where his
future was not only unknown but even questionable! Yet, God was at work throughout Joseph’s story. What others intended for evil, God intended for good. We hope to see you in person or online for worship in the new year. Our Lead Pastor, Doyle Sager, and his family continue to be overwhelmed by your kindness, generosity, and prayers on their behalf as Doyle receives cancer treatments. M T. V E R NO N Mount Vernon Missionary Baptist Church in Holts Summit, Missouri, was vandalized on November 25, the day before Thanksgiving. Pastor Gordon Coleman shared this on Facebook, “I share with a heavy heart that our beloved church Mt. Vernon Missionary Baptist Church in Holts Summit, Mo., has been the victim of terrible vandalism. Mt. Vernon was established by slaves in the early 1800s and was rebuilt in 1869. This small building has been the place of worship for a small predominately African American congregation for nearly two centuries. The vandals destroyed the place where many souls were saved, people fed and spirits uplifted. Thankfully the vandalism that occurred at the new church God blessed us with was not as severe. Please pray that this type of evil ends and that God will give us the resources and strength to restore this His historic building.” Like many congregations and individuals in our community, we grieve the hatred this congregation has experienced on multiple occasions over the years. First Baptist Church, Jefferson City, recently sent a letter of support and a financial donation to the church to help in their rebuilding efforts. We also commit ourselves to the ongoing work of addressing and ending racism. We have more than a building to repair and restore. < L E W I S & CL AR K The Missions Leadership Team approved $1,000 to Lewis and Clark Middle School for their food pantry in December. The pantry services nearly 110 students each Friday with extra food for the weekend and holiday breaks. Due to increased needs and fewer supplies, the pantry has been low on resources.
MUFFIN S OF THANK S Our Merry Food Service Elves have been busy this week! Yesterday, they baked several dozens muffins with lots of love at the church. Today, they delivered them to several local organizations to say THANK YOU. Thank you to Chef Michael, Tonny, and Gregory for your faithful (and delicious) work. P iecemakers
For the past 15 years, we’ve displayed the amazing work of our Piecemakers group in November before distributing it to organizations. Due to COVID, we are bringing their work to you digitally. Twice a month, they work on quilts, lap blankets, pillows, and totes; and donate them to places such as The Baptist Home, the Missouri Baptist Children’s Home Strawberry Festival, etc. They do both hand-quilting and machine quilting. Enjoy these beautiful pieces created in 2020 to bless others. Piecemakers are grateful to the church for their support and to the maintenance staff for all the help they give. They are also grateful to those who donate fabric that they rely on for their projects. Our Piecemakers group is open to beginning quilters and experienced quilters alike. If you’d like more information on getting involved with Piecemakers in 2021, please contact the church office or Gwen Dykes, ministry leader.
We all have goals! Whether your goal is to raise your grades, learn a new skill, get TikTok famous, change the world, or all of the above, there are things you want to do, accomplish, and become. But let’s be honest — it’s not always easy to achieve our goals. Sometimes it’s difficult to even know which goals to set in the first place! That’s why, in this 4-week series, we’ll explore the story of a guy with a seemingly impossible goal and the steps he took to make his goal a reality. His name is Nehemiah, and because of his example we can learn a lot about goal-setting, decision-making, leadership, and trusting God. Through Nehemiah’s story, we’ll see that big difficulties can inspire God-sized goals, you are designed for God-sized goals, God gives us strength to pursue God-sized goals, and God-sized goals require God-sized gratitude. WHAT TO EXPECT // We will meet as a large group in the gym, seated in chairs socially distanced. The gym gives us plenty of room to spread out and tall ceilings. The first 25 minutes will be a game, worship and a message ... all following our guidelines. We will dismiss small groups one at a time to go to their designated meeting space inside or outside (if weather permits) for the final 30 minutes. Temps will be checked when youth enter, hand sanitizer will be available and masks will be worn by everyone at all times. Chairs and all touch surfaces will be disinfected between the MS and HS gatherings.

In December, the FBC Deacon Body elected and recognized two of our faithful deacons, Harry Lauf and David Jobe, as Deacon Emeritus. The title of “deacon emeritus” is given to those who have served the church as deacons faithfully over the years, but have requested to be released from active professional duty due to physical inabilities. They continue to remain a deacon in title and membership. We express our deep gratitude for Harry and David and for their many years of service to FBCJC, to the deacon body, and to God. These humble men have served with love and devotion to the Church and to Kingdom ministry for many years, and will continue to do so as Deacon Emeritus at FBC. Thank you, Harry and David!
