As we launch a new year, let's think about two ministries of our church which rarely receive attention or affirmation. Yet without them, our church would grind to a halt. The first is our maintenance staff. I don't know if you realize it, but our buildings, including the gymnasium, total 111,000 square feet. Think about trying to keep all that space clean, functional and set up for all of our many, many gatherings. I recently came across a memo from last spring. As I read it, I noticed how many different room set-ups were needed for room 508, and all were within a few days of one another. The room was used for an all-day Wednesday meeting, then reset for a Wednesday night committee meeting, followed by a Thursday night meeting. Then the room was totally redone for a large funeral meal on Friday, and finally reset for a class luncheon on Sunday. And remember--that is just one room! I'm not sure we say it often enough, but we are truly grateful for our director of maintenance Robin Stull and his entire crew. The other often-overlooked ministry is intercessory prayer. I'm grateful to Kay Brejcha for leading our prayer ministry team and to Sondra Allen who coordinates our email prayer chain. Some time ago, Sondra reported that over the last 12 years, 3,574 emails had gone out to the prayer team, an average of 297 per year. And keep in mind that most emails carry more than one prayer request. Only God knows all the ways our prayers have impacted the Kingdom of God. And did you know that our church has a beautiful prayer room? It's on second floor, between the children's area and our Refuge (youth) area. You should visit the prayer room. It's comfortable, worshipful and quiet. I sometimes slip into the prayer room to clear my head, experience the quiet and pour my heart out regarding that day's burdens. I invite you to make 2017 a year when we express awareness and gratitude for all of our support staff, and to make it a year of greater prayer, undergirding all that God is doing among us.

God is at work! As we pray and continue seeking the Lord, God’s vision is taking shape among us. Your 41 Setting Sail crew members are working very hard. Some have met weekly since late summer reviewing hundreds of pages of data gathered in our congregational conversations last fall, and collecting additional information from our congregation, community and others. The Crews are identifying two or three major focus areas with initiatives and action plans for each Sail based on what you said is important to move us closer to God’s vision for us as God’s people.

FIRST KIDS AND FIRST FRIENDS: A GREAT FALL! Our First Kids and First Friends had a wonderful semester of learning about being “on mission with God!” Thank you to our wonderful First Kids and First Friends teachers: Bethshan Strawderman, Shawn Strawderman, Jeff Feeler, Cherita Heller, Brooke Schrimpf, Debbie Blythe, and Jolene Wingrath. On Preschool Buddies night, the elementary children are responsible for planning and hosting the First Kids (preschool and kindergarten) in the gym for a night of fun and fellowship. PRESCHOOL ASSOCIATE, ALLYSON BERNIER The first Sunday of December marked six months of Ally Bernier serving as our Preschool Associate. Ally offers hospitality, leadership, and support in our preschool area every Sunday morning from 7:30am-12:30pm. Thank you, Ally, for your faithful service! THANK YOU TO OUR BIBLE TEACHERS! Our church has THE BEST group of Elementary and Preschool Bible teachers, hands down! How blessed we are with a faithful and focused group of loving adults who nurture our children in faith every week. The third and fourth grade Bible teaching class hard at work on Sunday morning. Their teachers, Holly Schroer and Debbie Blythe, prepare a delicious treat EVERY WEEK for this crew. Wow!

PARENTS’ NIGHT IN AND KIDS’ NIGHT OUT
We’ll switch things up for PNO. Parents will stay at the church for a Parent-to-Parent seminar that will include dinner, fellowship, learning and fun. The children ages 4 through sixth grade will enjoy a well- supervised off-site field trip that will include dinner. Childcare will be provided for children ages 0-3 at the church. SOULED OUT RETURNS JANUARY 11, 2017 Our midweek program returns on Wednesday, January 11 from 6:00-7:30pm. We cannot WAIT to kick off a fantastic year with our new series, “SHAMELESS.” Souled Out currently meets in the Upper Room of the Gym while our Refuge youth home is under renovation. We should return by the end of January! Souled Out includes games, worship, message and small groups. It’s the place to be on Wednesday nights. Bring a friend! We love friends. Church supper is also served from 5:00-5:30pm in the Fellowship Hall. Youth Meal cost is only $3, payable at dinner.
