If you’re like me, I winced when I realized 2020 is another election year. Accusations, attacks, insults and zealots from all sides wrapping themselves in the twin blankets of the Bible and the flag.

During this challenging season, I believe that the Church of Jesus should be providing a radical counter-cultural witness rooted in Jesus’ teaching about loving neighbor as we love ourselves. As I attempt to shepherd us through this coming year, I will be drawing on the resources of “Golden Rule 2020—A Call for Dignity and Respect in Politics.” This movement was begun by a broad coalition of national Christian organizations and is endorsed by people from both major political parties.
· Use precise and truthful language that communicates my views without exaggerating.
This initiative takes seriously Jesus’ command in Matthew 7:12 instructing us to treat others the way we would like to be treated. Here is a sampling of the material: How to apply the Golden Rule to political discussions.
· Listen patiently—especially when there is disagreement.
· Try to understand the experience of the other person and how s/he came to a particular point of view. · Look for areas of mutual agreement. · Pray for the other person and our political leaders. Next month, some “won’ts” for us to consider. And by the way, Happy New Year Grace,

January Series: Influencer Whether it’s Instagram, YouTube, TV, or movies, we are constantly surrounded by “influencers.” But in reality, we are all influencers because we all influence others in some way, whether we mean to or not. We’re all already influencers, but the question is, “What kind of influencers will we be?” In this 3-week series, we’ll learn from a few key influencers in the Bible about what real influencers are like. They’re humble (not arrogant), chase good (not evil), live small (and dream big), and tell God’s story (not just their own).

We had a stupendous wrap-up to our fall activities with children. Our children’s choirs did a wonderful job leading us in worship on December 1st. Our preschool choir wow-ed their families with a private performance on December 4th. Our First Kids and First Friends enjoyed their Preschool Buddies December party, and learned about what matters most to Jesus. We made our own treasure chests, and put Jesus-treasures in them: love, respect, kindness, sharing, good memories, and helping. January is just around the corner, and we are excited about all that’s ahead in children’s ministry. Children continue to work on their Bible learning goals each Sunday morning in the Welcome Center room, which is always fun when it involves stacking cups. We look forward to a great winter/spring on Sunday’s and Wednesday’s!
Wednesday choir & First Kids/Friends will return on January 8. SAVE-THE-DATE for VBC June 22-26, 2020.

January 5 - February 12, the RIBS’ Class and Family Matters’ Bible teaching groups will combine for a Thriving Families study. Family life is full, demanding, and there is little space for reflection. We’ll talk about how to practically think, plan, and work out family values and priorities in the middle of life’s busyness. This is a class for single and married parents with children of any age. We’ll meet Sunday’s at 9:30am in RM 328.
