DEAR CHURCH,

We live in a noisy world. Even when alone, we’re bombarded with texts, emails, and social media messages. Even when we turn the noise off, our inner dialogue can be deafening. How do we better listen to God when the noise is loud and chronic, not just for our own good but for the glory of God and the good of the world as well?

This is the focus of our Lent series, AIRPLANE MODE: Silencing the noise to amplify God. Lent officially begins on Ash Wednesday, February 22, and will continue through Maundy Thursday on April 6, as we slow down and reflect on Christ’s journey to the cross.

This series is about discovering the gift of removing ourselves from the noise

FEBRUARY

to rest and abide in Jesus. We’ll look at the noise that often overwhelms us, as well as some spiritual practices to help us silence the noise and amplify God. There will be six-week small group options to help you dive deeper into community with others and engage in some spiritual practices together. Check out page 3 for more information.

As author Richard Foster said, “the spiritual disciplines are not the answer; they only lead us to the Answer.” Let’s learn together how to turn down the noise so we might rest in Christ.

LEAD PASTOR CALL WEEKEND FEBRUARY 4 & 5

The Pastor Search Committee has selected a final candidate to present to the congregation as their recommendation to be the next Lead Pastor of First Baptist Church. The candidate’s name had not been revealed at the time of publication, but will be released on January 29. Below is the schedule for the call weekend.

Saturday, February 4

Several conversations with the candidate will be held throughout the day at the following times:

9:00 am – 10:30 am Deacons and Interim Pastoral Staff

11:00 am– 12:30 pm Sunday School Leadership, Committee Chairpersons, paid & volunteer workers

1:00 pm – 2:30 pm Congregation (Fellowship Hall)

More information about the first two conversations will be emailed to those groups specifically.

Sunday, February 5

The candidate will preach in view of a call in our 9 am worship service. A special called business meeting will be held immediately following the February 5 worship service so the congregation can vote to call our next Lead Pastor. There will be no formal Bible teaching hour that morning; however, adult classes are welcome to meet after the business meeting if they so choose. There will be no classes for youth or children. Pursuant to our church constitution, in order to vote you must be a member of FBCJC and present at the business meeting.

OFFERING ENVELOPE DISTRIBUTION ISSUES

We received the following email from our offering envelope provider:

Greetings from The Church-Budget Envelope and Mailing Company,

Some of you may be aware of delays in the offering envelope mailings over the past couple months. Due to supply chain and the inability to add employees at the rate necessary has created a slow draw on production and shipping. Recently, both of those issues have been resolved. However the “catchup” would jeopardize long term delivery. In order to get back to expected levels of timely deliveries, we are forced to suspend the production of the remaining supply of your January envelopes. The offering envelopes will resume and be delivered by the first Sunday in March. Quarterly supply will restart in April.

Never in our company's history have we had to skip scheduled mailings and we are doing all we can to make sure this never happens again. We deeply apologize for this necessary course of action and the inconveniences this has caused you and your church family.

If you need blank offering envelopes, please get in touch with Mary Huhn at mary@fbcjc.org or 573.634.3603. You may also pick up envelopes on Sundays at the Welcome Center, the pews, or the church office during the week. You may give online as well at fbcjc.org/give.

Calling all members! A great avenue of blessing is open to you. We have several of our members who are in residential care facilities in the Jefferson City area, as well as elsewhere. We also have members who are homebound in their home. These beloved brothers and sisters are a wellspring of wisdom, love, and joy, but they miss being here among God’s people. You can both be a blessing and be blessed by calling, writing and/or visiting one of these amazing people once a month during 2023. MISSIONS ENGAGEMENT SURVEY

One of the primary goals for the FBCJC Missions Leadership Team in 2023 is engagement. We encourage our congregation to participate, more than ever before, in missions locally and worldwide, whether through prayer, finances, and/or hands-on service.

Here are three things we know:

1. Our church values serving generously.

2. We have amazing mission partners doing incredible things for the Kingdom.

3. We’re better when we work together, empowered by God’s Spirit, for the glory of God and the good of the world.

Here are three things we don’t know:

1. The real number in our congregation involved in mission work of some kind. (Some of you are quietly serving under the radar, and we love it! But we’d also love to know about it.)

2. The mission opportunities you hope and long to see FBCJC engage within our community, nation, or worldwide.

3. Those who want to serve but don’t know how to get involved.

There is a lot more we don’t know, but we want to start here, and we need your help.

Here’s how:

1. Complete a brief survey at fbcjc.org/missionsurvey to help us with our questions by February 22. (The survey should take you less than five minutes.)

2. For each completed survey, we will send $10 from our church mission fund to the ministry partner of your choice, selected from the list at the end of the survey.

You will be engaged in missions simply by completing this survey.

That’s it.

You complete a short survey, select a ministry to receive $10, and we better live out our mission to serve generously!

Visit fbcjc.org/missionsurvey to help us send $10 to a mission partner by February 22.

MISSIONS - 5

Our kids LOVE being part of this church family! We are having fun learning more about Jesus on both Sunday mornings and Wednesday evenings. We’re growing, and we still have room for more. Pray about who YOU can invite to be a part of FBC Children’s Ministry!

We’re very excited about our upcoming Children’s Sunday on February 12th. Children will be helping lead in a variety of roles during the service. Come ready to worship and be encouraged by what God is doing in and through our children!

Bring your pocket change on Feb. 12th. Our children will be collecting a NOISY OFFERING for missions! Let’s be cheerful givers. Get ready to make a joyful noise!

^ DNOW 2023 | March 17-19 | Higher Love

Our annual DNOW weekend is coming up soon. The 1980s brought us some of the most amazing love songs and romantic movie scenes the world has ever known, but several decades later we still don’t have a full grasp on what exactly we mean when we talk about love. So, what exactly is love? We’ll look at the words of Jesus and his closest followers to discover that love is not something we should have to earn, or something only meant for a few. Instead, we are free to love others and we are free to be loved.

Dates: Friday, March 17 – Sunday, March 19

Cost: $50 through March 1. $60 after March 1.

Who: Youth in grades 6-12

Register online at www.refugejc.com/dnow

When Jesus was on earth, he wasn’t exactly known for telling people what they wanted to hear. Jesus’ message was unlike any message people had ever heard before. He didn’t give shallow motivational speeches or feel-good sermons. He didn’t recycle the same messages other religious leaders were teaching. He flipped people’s ideas about God, the world, and themselves completely upside down — usually in uncomfortable ways. And that’s always how God’s words have worked! In this four-week series, we’ll compare Jesus’ words in the Gospels with the words of the Old Testament prophets to see how God’s words have always challenged our understanding of what’s wrong or right, good or bad, and just or unjust. We’ll talk about how, both then and now, God flips our assumptions about who God values, our definition of righteousness, our understanding of what’s good enough, and our definition of justice.
