Dear Church, One of my favorite quotes from the movie, You’ve Got Mail is when Joe writes his penpal and says, “Don’t you love New York in the fall? It makes me wanna buy school supplies. I would send you a bouquet of newly sharpened pencils if I knew your name and address.” I know I’m not alone in my love for new school supplies. This time of year, there are bouquets of new supplies greeting us in nearly every store, beckoning us with their siren call. There is something about new beginnings and fresh starts, whether a pristine package of colorful sharpies, turning a calendar page, or a new or mended relationship.

A new part-time Weekday Children’s Ministry Leader (pg 3), a potential Intentional Interim (pg 3), and a new chapter as God leads us to continue to build on the faithful legacy of this congregation and the sure foundation of Jesus Christ. On Sunday, August 8, we will remember our late Lead Pastor, Doyle Sager, who passed on January 22, 2021, from cancer. There will be special presentations and reflections as we remember and give thanks for Doyle’s life and ministry, and as we remember and give thanks for the resurrection hope we have through Jesus Christ. After each service, Doyle’s family will be available in the sanctuary to receive guests.

F B C J C T RA N S I T I O N U P DAT ES I N T E N T I O N A L I N T E R I M C A N D I DAT E A N N O U N C E M E N T The Transition Committee was approved by church vote on February 21, 2021, tasked by our constitution and the membership to arrange for pastoral leadership, including pulpit supply, while a new pastor is being sought. Since that time, we have met regularly to visit with church leadership, develop a job description for an Intentional Interim Minister, provide pulpit supply through the summer, and interview candidates. An Intentional Interim Minister will provide pastoral leadership to the congregation during the transition between pastors and serve as a consultant with our Pastor Search Committee. The committee is pleased to announce we have a candidate for Intentional Interim at FBC JC and welcome him Sunday, August 15, to preach in each service in view of a call to serve as our interim. A letter with more information will be mailed to all members on Monday, August 2. This mailing includes more information about the candidate, what to expect during the interim season, and the process to vote on calling him as our interim. Thank you for your prayers for this committee, the candidate, and our church. We are excited about this next chapter, and we encourage you to join us Sunday, August 15, for worship and the quarterly business meeting at Noon. PA R T-T I M E W E E K DAY C H I L D R E N ’ S M I N I S T RY L E A D E R H I R E D The Personnel Committee is pleased to announce the hiring of Cara Harrington as our part-time weekday Children’s Ministry Leader. Beginning July 26, Cara will provide leadership for mid-week and special events within Children’s Ministry at FBC JC during the transition after Hannah Coe’s resignation to serve as pastor at Calvary Baptist in Waco, TX. Volunteer leadership coordinated with liaisons Mandee Carney and Ally Rose are covering the other Children’s ministry portions of the open position. Serving as an elementary teacher helped prepare her for 13 years as a Minister of Missions and Children at First Baptist Church, Sedalia, Mo. That in turn led to her obeying God to form the non-profit organization, Just Jump Ministries, to encourage, equip, mobilize, and connect individuals and organizations to grow in missions efforts locally, nationally, and throughout the world following the model of Acts 1:8. In addition to serving locally, she has missions experience in California, Florida, Illinois, Kentucky, Missouri, Ohio, Texas, Wyoming, Canada, Ecuador, Ethiopia, France, India, Italy, Mexico, South Africa, and Thailand. She has found herself falling in love with God’s people (especially the children) everywhere she has traveled. Cara graduated from Missouri Western State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education. She earned a Master’s degree in Ministry Leadership and graduated from Rockbridge Seminary in 2011. Cara is excited to see how God continues to write the next adventure. Are you interested in finding an outreach ministry that can make a real difference in the lives of people? If so, the Mission Leadership Team would like to hear from you. When considering new mission partners for FBC JC, the Missions Leadership Team gives considerable weight to whether there are opportunities for hands-on involvement by church members. Two mission partnerships approved just last month provide a variety of opportunities for you to get involved. Building Community Bridges (BCB) rose to prominence in the wake of the tornado in 2019 that disrupted so many low-income neighborhoods. BCB was able to distribute food and supplies quickly and efficiently two years ago, but that is only a small part of what it does in the community. Everything from boxing lessons to dance classes to regular neighborhood picnics (and everything in between) fills the calendar of activities sponsored by BCB. And it is open to new activities that might be suggested. Bottom line – if you would like to share your time and talents to better our community, BCB has a place for you. Transformational Housing (TH) was created specifically in response to the tornado of 2019. The storm’s destruction laid bare a chronic shortage of decent, affordable rental housing in Jefferson City. TH will not only provide short-term rental units but will also coach its renters on finances and other life skills so they can successfully transition to traditional housing. TH hopes to complete renovation of a five-unit house on Cherry Street early next year but needs volunteers on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Saturdays to reach this goal. After the renovation is complete the new tenants will need volunteer coaches to help them develop self-sufficiency through accountable relationships. Whether you are more comfortable with construction or with mentoring and building relationships, TH could use your help. In each morning worship service, we will have a blessing of the backpacks for students of all ages and school staff (teachers, administrators, support staff, nurses, maintenance, etc.). Bring your “bag” with you to service, and we’ll have a special gift for each person as well. PROMOTION SUNDAY // On August 22, we will also promote all preschool, children, and youth to their new school grade. Information on room changes and teachers will be sent to all families prior to August 22.
PRESCHOOL VOLUNTEERS NEEDED Extended Care volunteers for each morning worship services // We’re building our volunteer team to work in the preschool area during morning worship services. No prep. Just supervise, play with and care for our preschool children. The more volunteers, the larger the rotation of workers! Sanitation volunteers // Volunteers needed to clean toys and sanitize the preschool area towards the end of second service each week. (around 11:30 am -12:00 pm).
