The first few days of April will carry us through Maundy Thursday to Easter morning, through Jesus’ suffering in his final hours to his resurrection from the dead. The first few days of April, therefore, reflect the high’s and low’s of the last year. What does it mean to receive the beauty and glory of Easter morning even as we name the darkness and ugliness we’ve encountered? Christ invites us to tenderly embrace our pain and scars that we may be healed and restored by Easter’s Good News. To do this work, we need each other. Christ invites us into life-giving and authentic relationship with each other. Our upcoming sermon series Bloom: Cultivating Life-Giving
Relationships will explore how to build health and experience God in our relationships. Relationships are a big part of life. Some are by choice and others are not. Either way, God desires health and flourishing in your relationships. We’ll seek God’s presence and direction in our relationships, knowing what we plant now impacts what blooms tomorrow.

As part of our congregation’s 2016 strategic plan known as Setting Sail, First Baptist Church committed to a “spiritual discernment effort to connect with God’s vision and partner in God’s work in our community and the world.” Our church has been steady in following through on that commitment, albeit sometimes slowly.

FBC is a generous congregation committed to mission involvement and participation locally, nationally, and internationally. Setting Sail reflects this heart in its priorities and initiatives. The establishment of a Mission Leadership Team (MLT) was a top priority. The team, established in 2018 and tasked with providing strategic vision and leadership for all mission efforts, meets monthly or more often as needed to coordinate our efforts and promote mission involvement. Assistance for tornado victims in 2019, participation in the Road to Recovery Habitat build in 2020, and recent efforts to reduce food insecurity are just a few of the mission opportunities communicated and responded to by the congregation.

Simultaneously, the MLT has developed objective criteria to evaluate mission opportunities and has nearly completed its review of FBC’s current mission partnerships. The MLT will soon be evaluating new mission opportunities for congregational involvement. The pandemic created some countervailing winds for some Setting Sail initiatives in the past year. Mission trips have been canceled, but the MLT has adapted to allocate resources and further the initiatives identified in Setting Sail for FBC to embody God’s love in service to our community, the nation, and the world. C O M M U N I C AT I O N S A S S O C I AT E TRANSITION Kris Crawford, our part-time Communication Associate, recently resigned to accept a full-time position in the community. She began her employment with us in November 2017, and her last day with us will be Sunday, April 4. We are beyond grateful for the creative skills and design gifts Kris brought to our ministry, as well as the sweet and inspired spirit she brought to our team. We have benefited from her work in these monthly Beacon newsletters, our sermon series graphics and postcards, the Weekly emails, social media posts, photo booth displays at holidays, and so much more. Thank you, Kris! We love you and wish you the very best on this grand new adventure with God.

T RA N S I T I O N U P DAT ES FO R MARCH 29, 2021 Our Enlistment and Transition Committees continue their important and constitutional work of providing guidance during a pastoral transition at FBCJC. Below are recent updates from each committee. Enlistment Committee – After leading the process of establishing a Transition Committee, the committee is now preparing to bring to the congregation a slate of nominees to serve on the Pastor Search Committee. At the time of this writing, the goal is to bring these names to the Quarterly Business Meeting on Sunday, April 18. (Committee Members: Martha Jobe, Co-chair; Debbie Bledsoe, Co-chair; Sharon Anderson, Bill Baggett, Bill Heller, Adele LoGaglio) Transition Committee - The committee is meeting regularly to assess the needs of the congregation during the interim /transition time. The committee also met with the pastors to learn more about needs and processes. The committee is currently recruiting supply preachers to begin May 30. This will provide Pastors Hannah Coe and Melissa Hatfield with some relief as regular ministry responsibilities pick up during the summer months. It will also provide the Transition Committee additional time to identify and nominate a candidate for the interim period at FBC JC. (Committee Members: Sharon Nelson, Chair; Susan Bell, Mandee Carney, Gary Collins, Travis Ford, Stephen Mathis)
Waiting is inevitable. It could mean that the stadium is at capacity, there aren’t enough tables at your favorite restaurant on your birthday, the pair of shoes you wanted is out of stock. It could be more serious things like waiting for test results or waiting on help while making a big decision. Abraham and Sarah. Paul and Silas. Saul and David. David and Goliath. Their stories all have something to teach us about what is happening during the season of being “waitlisted.” God has a plan, but we might have to wait for it. And, while we’re waiting, God is faithful, listening, and hopes you don’t give up— because God doesn’t give up on you.
