First Baptist Church Greensboro
Our church is grateful to join our Greensboro community at Greensboro Pride! First Baptist Greensboro seeks to be a church that reflects the breadth of God’s love and the wideness of God’s embrace, affirming all in the fullness of identity, background, and status. We recognize the ways in which LGBTQ+ persons have been excluded and marginalized in our society, and we lament the role that churches have played in such exclusion. For this reason, we have tried to be clear about our church’s convictions and commitments. In January of 2025, First Baptist adopted the following statement of inclusion, giving clear voice to what was already practiced in our church: “We believe that our church is more faithful to God’s calling when we include and celebrate all people. We therefore affirm and welcome people of all sexualities and gender identities to participate fully in the life and leadership of our community of faith, including the sacred practices of baptism, communion, marriage, ministry and ordination.” We recognize the many churches, communities of faith and organizations that have long expressed this commitment, and are grateful to join them and do our part, here at Greensboro Pride Festival and beyond. If you’re looking for a community of faith seeking to practice God’s love, justice and joy, you can learn more about us within these pages, or by joining us any time. We’d love to welcome you! In God’s Inclusive and Affirming Love, Alan Sherouse Senior Pastor
WORSHIP We welcome all to worship with us on Sundays at 10:30 am. We also have a variety of Sunday School classes at 9:30 am. Our worship doesn’t fit neatly into “traditional” or “contemporary” boxes—it’s participatory, Spirit-centered, and shaped by both ancient and modern practices. Together, we celebrate the good news of Jesus and seek God’s presence through ageless songs and texts. Childcare is available for ages birth–3, and children 4 years–middle elementary join worship before heading to a time designed just for them called The Children’s Gathering. After worship, we have a time of connection together over refreshments on our front lawn.
COLLEGE Our College Ministry is an inviting community of students with diverse backgrounds and faith stories, committed to following Jesus together. We encourage one another to ask questions, take risks, and build authentic relationships. For more information, contact Chris Cherry (chris@fbcgso.org) The College Ministry gathers together after worship on Sundays for a free lunch and short bible study. College students also can eat free at our Wednesday Midweek Meals at 5:30 pm by emailing Keighley Johnson (keighley@fbcgso.org) We also offer parking passes to college students. Cost is $150 for the semester or $280 for the entire year. These are available at our front desk during office hours of Monday-Thursday, 9 am - 4 pm and Friday, 9 am - Noon. If you are musically inclined, we have Music Internships available throughout the year. Please contact our Minister of Music & Worship, Landry Duvall (landry@fbcgso.org) if interested.
MUSIC ADULT MUSIC MINISTRY
Sanctuary Choir | Wednesdays 7:15 – 8:45 pm The Sanctuary Choir is the anchor of music ministry at First Baptist Church and is open to all adults. College students are especially welcome! This group sings a wide variety of choral music as they lead regularly in Sunday worship services. Special seasons of the church year afford opportunities to present larger choral works. Adult Handbells | Sundays 6:15 – 7:30 pm Make a joyful noise with our Adult Handbell Choir! Every ringer plays an essential part as the ensemble brings music to life—adding beauty, energy, and wonder to worship. No handbell experience is required, though a basic level of music literacy is beneficial.
YOUTH & CHILDREN MUSIC MINISTRY YOUTH CHOIR | Sundays at 5 - 5:45 pm As part of Sunday Evenings at FBC, Youth Choir meets at 5 pm to rehearse choral music. Through singing together, youth work toward musical excellence, deepen their understanding of faith and the role of music in worship, and develop as thoughtful music leaders. Just as important are the relationships formed along the way. YOUTH HANDBELLS | Sundays at 5:45 - 6:15 pm Youth Handbells offers an engaging way to develop rhythm, musicreading, and ensemble skills. Because each ringer is responsible for part of the music, youth learn to listen closely, work together, and contribute to worship as one ensemble. No prior handbell experience is required. CHILDREN’S CHOIR | Wednesdays at 6 - 6:45 pm Our PreK and Children Choir gather to sing on Wednesday evenings as a part of Midweek from 6 - 7 pm Interested in being a part of Music Ministry? Please contact Landry Duvall, Minister of Music & Worship (landry@fbcgso.org)
MIDWEEK
Join us on Wednesdays for Midweek at FBC, where there is truly something for everyone! We’ll begin at 5:30 pm with a Fellowship Meal. Afterwards, kids and youth head to programming designed just for them. We have multiple offerings for adults durning this time as well. These classes provide engaging opportunities for spiritual formation, thoughtful conversation, and growing together in faith. Our current Midweek Classes are around the themes of parenting, politics, and plants! Parenting with Confidence led by Dr. Maria Paredes of Three Bird Counseling. Politics: A Conversation about Christian Nationalism and the church. Plants: Learning and helping in our FBC Community Garden.
SPIRITUAL FORMATION Spiritual Formation at First Baptist Greensboro is designed to engage people of all ages through a variety of creative and meaningful avenues. We host a monthly book club that explores our faith and lives through thoughtful conversation and reflection. Other offerings include FBC Journey, an opportunity to learn and grow in our faith by visiting places where we can learn about the early church and reflect together on what these historical locations have to teach us about our faith. Our next trip is to Turkey in March 2027. We also host an annual Women’s Retreat, where women ranging in age from 20 to 80 come together for a weekend away to spend time together, have fun, and grow in their faith. In addition, we offer Sunday School on Sunday mornings and a range of Wednesday evening classes. Connect with our Associate Pastor of Formation & Care, Courtney Willis (courtney@fbcgso.org) to learn more.
CHILDREN At First Baptist Greensboro, we are committed to following Jesus’ example by welcoming children into our church family. During a child’s infancy, we covenant with parents to be partners with them in nurturing their child and in helping them grow to know and love Jesus as friend, Savior, and Lord. Our varied programs for children are directed toward that end. We offer programming for children on Sunday mornings with Sunday school & The Children’s Gathering, which is an age-appropriate worship experience during our worship service. We also have programming for children to enjoy stories, music, and choir practice on Wednesday evening as a part of our Midweek. In addition to our weekly programs, throughout the year children can participate in camps, Vacation Bible School (VBS), and other family-centered events that provide opportunities for fun, learning, and spiritual growth. These experiences help children build friendships, explore their faith, and create lasting memories as part of our church community. We also have a Preschool for 2 months to PreK children during the school year from 9 am - 1 pm. Our weekday school nurtures the whole child through a faith-based curriculum that supports cognitive, socialemotional, motor, language, and artistic development. Children engage in sensory-rich, nature-based, and interest-driven activities, while learning positive social skills and problem-solving. We embrace inclusion, partnering with families and the church to foster community, service, and stewardship. Our goal is to prepare children for elementary school with confidence, grace, kindness, and a strong foundation in faith. If you have any questions about our Children’s Ministry, contact our Associate Pastor of Children & Families, Amy Starr Russell (amy@fbcgso.org). If you have any questions about our Preschool, contact our Preschool Director, Christina McCord (christina@fbcgso.org)
YOUTH In the FBC Youth Ministry, we seek to connect the passions of our youth with God’s passions already at work in the world. We are an inclusive community of imperfect people striving for authenticity and fellowship. FBCYouth gathers on Sunday evenings for Youth Group and Wednesday evenings for Midweek. Come and be a part of a great group of youth as we journey together. Our youth have regular opportunities to connect, learn, and grow in faith. On Sundays, all ages are invited to Sunday School at 9:30 am. On Sunday evenings, we have an evening full of activities including: Youth Group at 4:00 pm, Youth Choir at 5:00 pm, and Youth Handbells at 5:45 pm. On Wednesdays, Midweek programming for youth activities is at 6:00 pm. In addition to our regular weekly programming, our youth have many opportunities to serve, learn, and grow throughout the year. They help lead and assist with children’s programming, participate in summer camps, participate in worship leadership roles and take part in mission trips that allow them to put their faith into action. Beyond these activities, youth also engage in special events, service projects, and other experiences designed to build leadership skills, deepen their faith, and strengthen their connections within the church and wider community. If you have any questions about the Youth Ministry, contact our Associate Pastor for Youth and Families Chris Cherry (chris@fbcgso.org).

On our own campus, our volunteer-run Community Garden provides fresh produce to many of these partners. In addition, we maintain global partnerships through Cooperative Baptist Fellowship (CBF) field personnel, extending our mission work around the world.
