IT IS WITH GRATITUDE THAT WE SEND DR. STEVE SUMEREL OFF WITH OUR LOVE AND AFFECTION, BLESSING HIM AS HE JOURNEYS ON. As one of our hymns reminds us, “There’s a sweet, sweet spirit in this place,” and it was indeed the case on Sunday, May 19 as we celebrated the ministry of Dr. Steve Sumerel at First Baptist Church. From his thoughtful words in worship to the gathering in the Fellowship Hall, God’s presence was felt as the congregation gave thanks for the nine years Steve served as associate pastor at First Baptist.

The luncheon reception in his honor was filled with the humor, compassion, and curiosity that Dr. Sumerel embodies. Friends and colleagues

reminisced about their relationships with Steve, as well as the many ways they’ve seen the attitudes of Christ reflected in Steve’s life and ministry. It is with fondness that we all reflect on Dr. Sumerel’s beloved ministry here at FBC, and while we will miss him greatly, we are delighted for the new journey on which he is about to embark. We are confident that Dr. Sumerel will travel forward into retirement, knowing that God is leading him to a delightful world of new beginnings. And it is with gratitude that we send him off with our love and affection, blessing him as he journeys on.

D

R. STEVE SUMEREL BEGAN HIS TENURE as an Associate Pastor of First Baptist Greensboro in April 2010. In our newsletter that month, Steve compared his beginning to the start of a “journey,” saying “I am looking forward to getting to know my fellow travelers.”

Steve admits that the “journey” is his chosen metaphor for life and faith, as well as for a career that has traveled through church ministry, seminary teaching, denominational leadership, advocacy and public witness, and the pastoral care and leadership that he brought to our church throughout his nine years with us.

In keeping with the theme, among the gifts our church shared with Steve at his retirement celebration was the gift of a desk compass, with the words “Fellow Pilgrim on the Road” etched on the outside. We chose these words from a favorite hymn, which says that all of Christian life is a journey. Named “The Servant Song,” the hymn says,

“

We are travelers on a journey, fellow pilgrims on the road.

We are here to help each other, walk the mile and bear the load.

Steve told our staff that he and Marie have placed the compass on a table in their home that they call “the map table,” given the numerous maps that are spread there to remind of travels past and chart paths forward.

We need both compasses and maps in our journeys as individuals and as a community of faith. In Steven Spielberg’s film, Lincoln, Daniel Day Lewis’ Abraham Lincoln makes an observation about compasses and maps:

“

when needed. He’s also been a map, analyzing the particular terrain and helping to navigate challenging paths. We’re grateful that he has shared this much of the road with us, and joyfully bless him and Marie as they travel from here.

Moving Forward As our church moves forward from this point, we need both compasses and maps, too. We have the commission of Christ to “make disciples” as we have the power of the Spirit to dream dreams, plus the constant guidance of our Creator God always moving us in the direction of love. But beyond these “True North” guides, we also need detailed plans for the challenges, needs, and opportunities ahead.

For instance, as we look to the next phase of our church’s journey, on the heels of such a significant retirement, our Personnel Committee is seeking the most faithful plan for staffing. We believe that our best resource for charting such plans is our wider congregation, so the Personnel Committee and I hope you will join us for one of three Congregational Conversations, as we consider staffing needs following Dr. Sumerel’s retirement.

These are intended to be opportunities to share together our hopes and needs, listen for the guidance of the Spirit through it all, find some common themes, and be prepared to spread our maps out on the table and continue forward into a new church program year.

Further details are enclosed on page 5 of this newsletter, and I hope you’ll plan to be a part.

I’m grateful for journeys past and paths ahead, and most of all to find that we travel together, “fellow pilgrims on the road.”

A compass, I learnt when I was surveying, it’ll point you True North from where you are standing, but it’s got no advice about the swamps and deserts and chasms you’ll encounter along the way. If in pursuit of your destination you plunge ahead, heedless of obstacles, and achieve nothing more than to sink in a swamp, what’s the use of knowing True North?”

A D U LT S WHOLE CHURCH BOOK READ LIFE OF THE BELOVED

All FBC adults are encouraged to spend the summer months of June-August to read Life of the Beloved by Henri Nouwen. The summer is a great time to listen for God’s voice in our hearts, and be reminded that we are beloved children of God. This book invites us to think about our spiritual lives as we become more attentive to who God has created us to be, how God blesses us, and how we are called to affirm and bless others.

As you read the book, ask others around you about what they think about the book and how they are learning more about “belovedness”. Throughout the summer, there will be opportunities for reflection on Facebook and Instagram as well. On Wednesday night, September 4, we will gather as a congregation to discuss the ideas in the book and how we might grow individually and collectively through this shared reading.

To help assess and plan for future staffing of FBC after Dr. Steve Sumerel’s retirement, the Personnel Committee is asking for the congregation’s input in the process. Everyone is invited to attend one of three Congregational Listening meetings with Personnel representatives and Senior Pastor, Alan Sherouse. All meetings will be held in the Chapel.

In addition to these meetings on our campus, Personnel reps and ministers will be hosting conversations with members at our retirement homes throughout the summer. We hope these multiple opportunities will allow for you to add your input.

LIFE OF THE BELOVED SUMMER GUIDE OASIS SUNDAY SCHOOL

Beginning June 2 | 9:15 am Each summer our adult Sunday school teachers are given a break, and all classes meet together in the Chapel. It is our hope that just as an oasis is a place of rest and replenishment in a desert, this class will be a time of rest for our teachers. Rev. Courtney Willis will lead class for the summer following the Nurturing Faith curriculum.

Even if you are not able to read our summer congregational book, please pick up a Life of the Beloved Summer Guide. This booklet will break down each chapter with thoughts, questions and activities for you to do throughout the summer. It can be completed individually, as a family, or even with beloved friends. The guides will be available in the fellowship hall, the library, and in the atrium beginning June 2.

CHILDREN CHILDREN’S MINISTRY SUMMER INTERN We are thrilled to welcome Sarah Billings as the Children’s Ministry Summer Intern at FBC. Sarah will be serving alongside Christina McCord from May 13 through August 4.

A Few Words from Sarah: I grew up in Greensboro and was a part of Westminster Presbyterian Church. I am a rising junior at Appalachian State University where I’m majoring in Speech Pathology with a concentration in cultural studies and child development.

I’ve always been passionate about missions. In high school, a friend and I started the Amani Bead club.

This club was an extension of a non-profit organization called the Amani Children’s Foundation. We made jewelry and other crafts using beautiful African beads that were

crafted by unemployed women in Kenya. We sold what we made and all of the proceeds went back to an orphanage in Kenya. I also served on mission trips to Nicaragua and Honduras where I was able to plan and coordinate the children’s vacation bible school.

In my short time at FBC, I have already seen why God has placed me here. I have learned and experienced that just by being with people and loving them where they are in life is a symbol of God’s love for us.

Creating interpersonal relationships

with the members of this church excites me and ministers to my heart.

I walk away from conversations knowing and feeling that God is good and is at work.

I feel right at home at FBC and I’m so excited to see how God will use me this summer as I work with the amazing kids and families here.

PRESCHOOL The Preschool is busy finishing up another great year. On May 9th, we celebrated some of the special people in our lives during Muffins with Mom. The children created several creative art pieces and enjoyed warm muffins. On May 13th, the EcoBus visited the preschool from Lake Higgins. Children encountered several native animals without leaving campus. The EcoBus strives to bring habitats to organizations and spread the word about conservation.

Children thoroughly enjoyed the bus and were highly engaged during this educational opportunity. Registration for 2019-2020 at FBC Weekday Preschool is currently open. For more information, please contact Autumn Culbreth at autumn@fbcgso.org

We are excited to welcome Lillie Allmond Harris as our guest director. She is a music educator with Guilford County Schools. She currently teaches K-5 general music at Union Hill Elementary School.

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL | ROAR

At ROAR VBS, Children ages 4-5th grade will embark on an epic African adventure that engages the whole herd. Kids will explore God’s goodness and celebrate a ferocious faith that powers them through this wild life.

Children who have completed 4th and 5th grades will be participating in mission projects on-site and in the community from 9:30-11:30 each day.

They will be joining the larger group for opening and closing celebrations.

Cost: $20 per child, $50 family max. (includes activities, daily snacks, a T-shirt and Thursday evening dinner and celebration), $5 CDs available of program music.

MISSIONS MAY 4 MISSIONS DAY

Hands Dirty, Hearts Full, Love Shared Thank you to all who helped serve and share together on our May 4 Missions Day! All ages and abilities were able to help with projects at Hope Academy, our Community Garden at FBC, and Community Housing Solutions. We were able to help provide breakfast for the Habitat for Humanity Women’s Build and we collected items for the Habitat ReStore. We also wrote and visited those in our church family who are homebound. We are thankful that we share God’s love on many days individually and especially are thankful when we can do so together.

A Few Highlights:

Geneva Metzger has built in every Habitat Women’s Build until this year. Though this year health restraints prevented Geneva from building, she was still able to be a part of the build by providing breakfast to the May 4 kickoff crew on behalf of FBC.

Jamie Powell enjoyed sharing a visit and a personalized begonia with Dottie Gordon. Jamie’s husband is a pastor unjustly imprisoned in China and she chooses to continue to share God’s love and light whenever she can.

FBC college students took a break from finals and got up early on a Saturday morning to help stain and protect a ramp that enables an elderly woman to leave her home for doctors appointments, etc.

HABITAT FAITH BUILD HOME DEDICATION Saturday, June 8 | 10 am

Each year FBC partners with other area churches to help build a Habitat home for a deserving family. This build has been delayed by a hurricane, a snowstorm, and torrential rains but finally the home is finished and we are invited to celebrate with the family at the Building on Faith dedication on Saturday, June 8 at 10:00 a.m. at 1423 Asher Downs Drive.

The home belongs to Isameldin and Howaida who are parents to 4 children: 3 boys and 1 girl. The family came to the United States from Sudan in 2009. Isameldin has been employed with a Triad manufacturing company for several years and Howaida manages the home. The family is looking forward to moving from their small apartment to their own home in a neighborhood where their children can play in the yard.

If you’ve never attended a Habitat House dedication it’s a beautiful and emotional day for our homeowners. We bless the house together, present gifts to the family and then are invited by the homeowners to tour their home and share in a meal prepared by them and their friends. The Ceramics group at FBC has prepared a beautiful house-warming gift to share on behalf of our church family. It’s a very special occasion and we invite anyone from FBC to attend.

MISSIONS SHARE YOUR GARDEN PRODUCE THIS SUMMER Donate to Share the Harvest

“Share the Harvest” is a program that helps provide fresh local produce to those in our community who find themselves in need. It is just one of the many ways organizations and local citizens of Guilford County are helping to eliminate hunger.

“Share the Harvest” will be starting back up with this year’s growing season.

The first day to drop off your donations is June 3rd and collection sites will be open all summer through September 30th. “Share the Harvest” is a notfor-profit group that is creating pathways to connect gardeners with local service organizations to help families overcome food insecurity. Most of FBC’s Community Garden produce is shared this way and you may want to contribute produce from your own home gardens as well.
