FROM PASTOR ROSS It is hard for me to believe that my family and I have already been here a year. I want to thank you again for the privilege of being your pastor and being a part of what God is doing in our church. I continue to pray for what God is doing and will do in the life of our church. In almost every committee, business, or staff meeting I am in, I try to remind us to pray God will use us to reach people who don’t know Jesus and for revival to come to our church and the churches in Washington County. As we prepare for the fall, let me keep you informed about a number of events: 1. On Sunday night, September 14 from 5:00-7:00 in the Gym, we will welcome Dr. John Morgan, Senior Pastor at Sagemont Baptist Church in Houston. He will be here to talk with us and answer questions about building debt-free. I hope and pray you will come to listen, ask questions, and seek the Lord’s will for our church. 2. The Building Committee continues to meet with architects and contractors in order to discern what research, design, and build process is best to bring before the church. Right now, there is not much discussion about style, type or size of building, etc. Instead, the focus is on what we sense will be the best process that will lead to the design and construction of buildings. While thinking about the process is not as exciting as designing and building buildings, it is crucial. In the next few months, you will be hearing more from this committee. Keep them in your prayers. 3. This fall, I will begin facilitating discussions on developing a discipleship process. By “discipleship process,” I mean what steps need to be provided in our church to take a person who has committed their life to Jesus Christ or who has joined the church in order to equip them to have an ongoing, personal, love relationship with God. In preparation, let me ask you to think about the following question: If a new Christian asked you what they needed to do to grow closer in their relationship with God, how would you answer? 4. I will also be facilitating discussions around vision: where God is leading us. In preparation for these times, let me ask you this question that another pastor asked his congregation: “What one thing do we need and want to see happen but would take an act of God for it to occur?” Thank you again for allowing me to be your pastor and for the blessing you have been to my family. -Ross P.S. WORSHIP & MUSIC MINISTRY I would like to take another opportunity to say “thank you” to the First Baptist family for welcoming my family and me in the gracious way that you have. We have received encouragement and love from so many of you over our first few weeks in town and I just want you to know how meaningful every thoughtful word and gesture has been. 2014 has been an emotional roller-coaster in many ways. In early spring, Bonnie and I were raising our family in my childhood home, serving the very people who trained me up in my home church, and were extremely content and comfortable with the routine life had settled into. Little did we know, God was preparing to make an unexpected change to our plans as He began speaking and revealing a new assignment for us. His call was clear, consistent and was spoken through His Word, many times unknowingly through the words of others, and frequently through circumstances that could only be explained by Him. (Bonnie and I began attracting Blue Bell trucks like flies!) We are humbled to serve a God who lovingly cares about the details of our lives, and more importantly, the building up of His Kingdom and the glorification of His Name. The Lord Has proven Himself faithful in our time of transition. He has blessed us with a wonderful new church family, has provided for our every need physically and emotionally, and has given us an excitement, passion, and vision for the work He has called us to here in Brenham! Which leads me to this: What is God speaking to your heart? Is your ear to the ground, tuned intently upon His voice? How is He challenging you from your comforts into the specific area(s) of ministry He is calling you to? If you have the Holy Spirit inside of you, you have been given unique gifts, that when utilized, will not only bring you great fulfillment and joy, but can make an eternal impact on the Kingdom of Heaven. So, instead of living out the remainder of our lives pursuing our own comfort, let’s step out in faith, knowing that His ways are higher than our ways, and His thoughts are higher than our thoughts! I am honored to serve alongside you and am convinced that Brenham’s First Baptist’s best days are on the horizon! Thank you for allowing the Covins to experience it with you. Blessings, Charles Covin

A LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
Dear Friends, Recently the senior adult council met to make plans for our upcoming year. We hope you will be excited about some of our plans to put a little boost of energy into our group. It was beginning to feel a little tired for lack of a better description. We would like to have more people join our group. If we get too big for the Pahl House, we will find a larger place to meet if necessary. Wouldn’t that be a great problem to have? As we were discussing this Troy asked us to list what our purpose for Adult Ministry should be, and this is what we came up with: 1. Fellowship 2. Worship 3. Evangelism 4. Discipleship 5. Ministry/Missions We also want to add a few things, and will have more information on those things at the September meeting. We hope you will be here on September 16th to hear about all the new things we will be adding and old things we are continuing. We are all excited about the new year. I’ll share a little something for you to be working on before that time. Please start collecting items for our Operation Christmas Child as we will be using our October meeting to box up boxes for this. We hope this will catch on, and start a new ministry of collecting all year to have a boxing day every year. Ladies if you knit or crochet, and gentlemen if you make wooden toys will you make some things to add? Now is a good time with school items like crayons and markers on sale as well to collect those types of items. For a long time the name Sr. Saints has been used to describe the ministry, but we are looking for a name that describes not just who we are, but the ministry we are doing. If you have a suggestion, write it down, include your name and submit it to a staff member or the church office by September 12. There will be a prize for the winning selection. Name to be voted on Thursday, September 16.

STUDENT MINISTRY WELCOME BACK STUDENTS!! The school year is back in full swing! Students are in class, laboring over homework and spending their “extra” time in all the other fun stuff including band, football, volleyball, and tennis just to name a few! After the hustle and bustle of camp, mission trip, and other summer activities, the Fall may appear to be a time of rest for your Student Pastor especially as I back off a little to let students develop their new routines and schedules. It is true that we don’t have any big events scheduled for this time of the year, but don’t think I’ll be letting any dust settle on me. This is one of the most important seasons of the year because students are so involved in other activities which I can attend and support. So please send me those schedules (or better yet send them to Bobbye at cemarrs@aol.com) so we can do our best to see our students in action. So whether you’re a Cub, Brahma, Eagle, Bobcat, Knight, Warrior or any other mascot species I want to have the opportunity to cheer your student on! I’ll see you out there on the field of life. CHILDREN’S MINISTRY BFBC Kids Klub Monthly Virtue: Respect Showing others they are important by what you say and do. September is here and so is school. I think I just heard rumbling roars across Brenham (the rumbling from the kids and the roars from the parents). Anyway, school is back and with it comes all of our favorites: sports, books, carpools, schedules, homework and cafeteria food. Yep, the school year brings back all the things that you miss during the summer. Now I know that I am being very narrow, but my point is that during the summer we relax from our responsibilities a little bit (especially students and teachers). We take vacations. Kids stay up later and sleep in longer. Parents don’t have to get up so early to get kids to school before going to work. Then, summer ends, the school year starts and responsibility begins. Luke 16:10 begins with, “Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much…” This is a point of a parable about a dishonest manager who knew that his master was about to strip him of his position because of his fraudulence. The manager called in each of his master’s debtors and discounted their accounts. He did this in order to make friends with the debtors so that when the master fired him the debtors might welcome him into their homes out of appreciation for the reduction of their debts. The real point Jesus illustrates is that the manager used what will fade away (money) to invest in what will not (relationships). He used his responsibilities to invest in people. Bottom-line: Don’t allow your responsibilities to overshadow people. Instead, find ways to bless people through your responsibilities. The time that you are in the stands watching your son/daughter ____ (insert activity) look around. Be friendly to the other parents/spectators. Be an example of Christ and maybe you will be allowed the opportunity to share the Gospel. Write an anonymous thank you note to that teacher that gives you the most homework. Let them know how much God loves them. Use the morning commute to talk with your son/daughter about life. Invest your responsibilities into people and watch God do something great. Bro. Alex

Christmas in September! What is it you ask? Well let me tell you.
This year our Preschoolers are trying to raise money to help provide Christmas presents for CASA for Kids of South Central Texas. CASA for Kids is a National and Community outreach group made up of volunteers just like you and I who will help advocate for the best interests of abused and neglected children in the court system. At CASA for Kids of South Central Texas they serve our local children within Austin, Colorado, Waller and Washington Counties. We want to help make Christmas a special one for those children that have been through so much in their young lives. Here is how we are asking you to help. On September 21st our preschoolers will be out in the hallway and at the front entrance to the church after each church service. We are asking for donations to help us raise money for Christmas presents for these children. We are asking for any amount you are willing and able to give. We do not have a set goal that we are trying to reach. We would love to be able to provide presents for as many children as possible. We have been making homemade items for the past couple of months to give out to those who would like to donate money to us for CASA for Kids. Please make sure you stop by and see us. Also, if you are not able to be there on that day and you would still like to give us a donation you can still get it to us before or after the 21st. Just stop by and see us in the Nursery area on Sunday or stop by the church office. We are so great full for your help. Thank you! One more thing ... We are still having our Preschool Postal service in December. We have not replaced it. Thank you so much to some of the best ladies I know (Jill Bearden, Leah Oerhlien, Reba Pair, Toni Schwartz, and Linda Upchurch). You all have been such a blessing to me and the Preschool Ministry. Each of you have an amazing heart for our little ones and I know that you touch each and every one of them each week. All we have is because of Him, and all we do should be all about Him! We are looking forward to another great school year. Our school and EEC have the best Staff around. FROM TROY’S HEART In reading the book, Jesus, Life Coach, Laurie Beth Jones uses a phrase I found very interesting, borrowed armor. Borrowed armor is simply living inside the accomplishments, gifts, talents or power of someone else. We also borrow people’s armor when we allow them speak for us, blame them for our failure, expect them to act on our behalf or give them our responsibility. Have we ever borrowed armor? You bet! There have been many times I have failed to live inside my own armor. I have played the victim before. I have shucked my responsibility. I have made excuses for my laziness. I have used “them” or “they” or “they are” as an escape mechanism. Jesus always lived in His armor. He also never allowed His disciples to live outside their’s. When the disciples tried to send the 5000 away, He said, “You give them something to eat.” When Peter said, “If it is really you on the water, ask me to come out of the boat.” Jesus said, “Come on.” Jesus sees what we wear. He knows the armor in our closet. He wants us clothed in truth, not excuses. Saul tried to place his armor on David, but it was way too big. David fought Goliath in his own tunic. What will we wear today to face giants in our lives? Jesus came to give us a new spiritual closet. I want to wear the armor He has tailored for me. I must live in the identity, experiences, abilities, talents and gifts He has given me. If I choose to live otherwise, I will only be weighed down by the armor of others. Is it time to give someone’s armor back? I Love you, Troy
