Phase 2 Design Question & Answer

 How did the Phase 2 Committee arrive at this design?

o The work of the committee began in January of 2022 by doing two things:

 Interviewing architects: BBA Architects in Brenham rose to the forefront due to their experience and creativity.

 Looking at the purpose and vision of our FBC School: The initial six months of work was to determine the ideal location of our FBC School, downtown or South Market. We wanted to be good stewards of what God has provided in regards to our two locations. The main questions of exploration were: o In the July 2022 business meeting, we as a church voted to enlist BBA Architects to design Phase 2 of our relocation, which includes: FBCS, gymnasium, kitchen and fellowship hall. o From August – December 2022, we began the vision and programming stage. Here we talked about what the design would look like and what we would build: o At the start of the new year, as a committee, along with FBCS personnel, we have been reviewing and refining the Schematic Design you will see on Sunday, 2/19.

 Do we renovate and redesign the downtown location for our school?

 Do we build Phase 2 entirely on our South Market Campus? After a lot of research with BBA architects, local construction advice, security analysis, demographic information and lots of prayer, the committee unanimously voted to build on our South Market Campus.

 Some design aesthetics included: lots of light, open feel, forward thinking, coordinate with Phase 1, fun, creative.

 We measured each of our school classrooms and programmed in for growth and expansion of new classrooms. Presently, the designed square footage of the design is approximately, 56,000 sq. ft.

 We spent hours looking online at school designs and did a personal tour of Alton Elementary with Darren Heine of BBA Architects.

 What have been some important considerations during the programming and design process?

o The safety of our children at our school has been paramount. The shooting at Uvalde had a big impact on the location of the build, as well as the overall design. The South Market location has the best design landscape for safety and security.

o The potential sale of the downtown property has driven much of our design timeline. Our committee has worked hard with BBA Architects to prepare for a possible closing date of the sale by August 2023. (Lord willing, information about and a call to vote on the potential sale of the downtown property will happen soon.) We would like to have a church-approved design by that closing date. If that is the closing date of the sale, the lease-back would start and costs would begin to accumulate.

o The school calendar has also been a driving influence. We have wanted to have an initial design in place by FBCS Sapphire fundraiser(March 3, 2023) to show families our vision of the future. In addition, we would like to complete the initial phase of a capital campaign by the end of the school year in May. o Waiting or dragging our feet may lead to missing opportunities regarding a capital campaign. o To design a school that would meet the needs of our community for years to come. We included 5 more classrooms - 3 for Preschool and 2 for Elementary. o Increased security. o Increased technology. o Visibility and use of sunlight. o Placement on the property for proximity to Phase 1. o Exterior finishes would coordinate with Phase 1. o Provide for increased security. o Provide for increased technology. o Larger hallways for circulation. o Adaptive learning spaces: Libratory(Library, Computer & Technology), Hallway Neighborhoods, Outdoor Learning Theatre, expanded Music Suite. o Provide for increased growth. o Full-size gymnasium for our athletic program and physical education. o Separate cafeteria for ease of cleaning and coordination with the P.E. program. o Increased storage. o Flag football field and play space. o Playgrounds for nursery(one indoor), preschool and elementary aged children. o Ease of access from drop off and pick up of students. o Teacher’s Recharge Station and bathrooms. o Provides a 2,000 sq.ft fellowship hall with direct access to the kitchen. o Full service kitchen with ability to have it convert to a “Caterer’s Kitchen”. o Provides needed education space for several classrooms that are too large for their present locations. o Provides multiple fellowship spaces. o Provides a full-sized gym for banquets and sports leagues. o More parking. o More ingress and egress access by concrete driveways onto Cantey St & S. Market. o While this is a good question, we have chosen to not frame this build in terms of a “cost”, but an “investment”! Costs seem painful, but investments are forward looking! o For 45 years, FBC School has invested in thousands and thousands of lives and families. Present enrollment is: 276. Enrollment for the Fall is expected to be higher based on present enrollment at this time. o We have invested in hundreds of thousands of hours teaching and living out the love of Jesus as written in the Bible. o We have invested in the lives of employees and their families for generations. o ALL for the kingdom of God. o So our investment is not only in dollars, but in prayer, service, love, sacrifice and caring. o We are estimating that to continue and expand the 45-year investment of countless employees, students and families, we will need $15-18 million dollars.

 What are some overall factors that lead to this design?

 What impact will this design have on our FBC School? What are some key features?

 What are some benefits of Phase 2 to our church?

 What is the cost(investment)?

 How will we pay for this investment?

o While we understand this is a huge financial investment, we truly believe in the power of our God to provide for His work o The committee has been praying diligently and asking God for His direction and for Him to provide in faith. o The proceeds from the sale of our downtown property will go to pay for Phase 2. o We will engage in a Capital Stewardship Campaign in March – May, Deep & Wide, with the hope that we will gather many financial investors, as well as, prayer investors. o From the results of our Deep & Wide Stewardship Campaign, we will then determine financing options. While we would love to build “debt-free”, and that is our earnest prayer, due to the need to build quickly and within the school year time frame, we understand financing may be needed. o Our FBC School is also examining their financial resources to see how they may assist in giving to the building of Phase 2. o The present design is for 56,000 sq. ft. and presently our school uses approximately 52,000 sq. ft. o We are building more square footage for growth, but also gaining a competition gym, separate cafeteria and more circulation space. o While we would have loved for both phases to be connected by an interior passage, due to site and cost constrictions, this is not feasible. o Both phases will be connected by a covered sidewalk. o The distance between the two phases is approximately 120 feet. o We are providing a Christian education while also providing opportunities for studentled ministry, leadership, and servanthood. We “train up a child in the way they should go…” so that when they leave our campus they are equipped with Biblical knowledge and God’s truth. They are able to stand up for their convictions and boldly speak truth in love and grace. o Many of our students go on to be leaders in their schools both spiritually and academically. We also provide opportunities including UIL, Athletics, Spelling B, Art, Music, Computer, etc. o We are seeing a rise in numbers of children with neurodevelopmental disorders, including ADHD, autism, learning disabilities, and behavioral disorders. With new furnishings and learning labs, as well as the use of light, we will have the enhanced ability to minister. o The “hallway neighborhoods” will provide an area where children can learn self-regulation through sensory tools, exercises, and breathing regimens through one-on-one modeling. These methods have the benefit of being highly focused, which can produce fast and effective results.

 How many square feet?

 Will Phase 1 and Phase 2 be connected by an interior access?

 How will Phase 2 (School) impact our community and highlight what we are doing well?

 How will Phase 2 (School) help minister to the “whole” child?
