FROM PASTOR ROSS There are lots of important things happening in the life of our church this fall. Mission, Discipleship, and Vision During October and November, we are going to go through a process of discerning the mission, discipleship strategy, and vision of our church. I know there was a similar process during the interim time, and I don’t want to take away from that and am thankful for the hard work of the Transition Committee who oversaw that process. As you know, though, when a new pastor comes in, he will have some different ways of thinking about things and the vision may take on some different elements. In October, you will be a given a sheet with some reflection questions that will help you think and pray through aspects of mission, discipleship strategy, and vision. These questions will be discussed by the ministerial staff and me, the deacons and me, and through four reflection times together . If you prefer to write out your responses, you will be able to do that as well. As the pastor, I believe it is important for me to lead in these areas under the leadership and lordship of Jesus Christ. I also believe it is important to listen to what God is doing in the midst of our people. As we begin 2015, you will hear more about the next stage of mission, discipleship strategy, and vision implementation. Relocation First, the Building Committee is continuing to meet with architects and construction people. Right now, we are discerning about the different ways architects and construction people help churches work through the design and discernment process and which process we believe God is calling us to propose to the church. Second, thank you to everyone who came out to listen to Dr. John Morgan from Sagemont Baptist Church talk about the ways they have watched God provide for their church as they built debt-free. I have many copies of the book he wrote telling this story. Please call the church office if you would like a copy. Third, please continue to pray for the 51 acres we are selling. 2015 Budget Preparations During the month of October, the Budget Council will meet in order to discern the budget for 2015. Our committees and staff have already been hard at work preparing their proposals. During November, we will have two Q-and-A sessions about the budget. You will be hearing more about this in a month. Although nothing dramatic, be prepared for a few changes. For example, the 2015 budget will reflect a change to our offices. I have proposed that when our contract ends on July 31, 2015 with Chase Bank, we move our offices out of the bank and back across the street. I have a number of reasons for doing this that I will share with you at a different time. Please pray for the budget planning process. As always, thank you for allowing me to be your pastor. I am excited for what God is doing and what He will do. -Ross 1 These will be the same meeting going over the same questions each time. My hope is to make these meeting available at different days and times so people can attend one of them.

A LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
Dear Friends,
I hope this finds you enjoying some cooler days as fall is approaching. I am feeling excited and energized as we met today for our first meeting of this church year. As you think back to the August newsletter I told you that we were hoping to step up and energize our program this fall. Today we voted to change our name to Encore Ministry from a list of names that had been submitted by our members. We want our program to entail several things they are Worship, Evangelism, Discipleship, Ministry/Missions and Fellowship. We are hoping with this name change we will enlist some of our younger retired couples. Encourage them to join us, and if we have to find a bigger place to meet we will. We also enjoyed music and testimony of our new Worship Minister Charles Covin. What a blessing his family has already been to us in the five weeks they have been here. We are trying something new this fall in conjunction with Operation Christmas Child. Our October meeting we will be taking a firsthand part in boxing up toys and other gifts for children around the world. Last year Washington County sent 3392 boxes out. Our church and school contributed 329 of those boxes. This years goal for a total of 4000 boxes. Last year we also collected $3500 for shipment of those boxes. If you can’t get out to shop you can donate money for shipping or some of us will be more than glad to do a little shopping for you.David May will be asking for volunteers to help with packing the boxes after they are finished from November 17th-24th. Another way you can help if you do woodwork or knit or crochet, think about small gifts such as wood cars or toys, knitted or crocheted hats, gloves or scarves. Little dresses like we did during VBS this past summer. Other suggested items are crayons, markers, harmonicas, coloring books, toothbrushes , pens, pencils, combs brushes, T-shirts, socks, sunglasses, any toys small enough to pack. If you are reading this, but are not of this age group do not feel like you cannot participate in boxing day. We will box your things for you if you put your items in the collection boxes, or come join us for the day and see what we are all about. We already have 800 boxes on hand to use, so let’s get busy collecting things to fill them. I know we will all be as blessed as the children who receive them will be. I will be hoping to see you on October 16th. Blessings, Reba Pair 9
STUDENT MINISTRY
We had a great start to ”ALL IN” and then had two weeks off for Homecoming Parade and Washington County Fair. I had a great time participating in those things and I know the youth did too, but they have been chomping at the bit for “ALL IN” to start back. And for good reason - the last time we had “ALL IN” one of our students gave his life to Christ! Like our students, I am so excited for this year. I believe that this time we have with each other has the potential to be a life changing each week. Please join me and our students in prayer as we plan on changing Brenham one student at a time. On September 21 we started two Sunday evening Discipleship Classes - Every Young Man’s Battle for the boys in the Student Center and Every Young Woman’s Battle at my home led by my wife, Bobbye. We are absolutely thrilled to have 30 students involved in these studies. Long gone are the days when a kid had to go searching for sexual temptations - our culture and kids are exposed to images and ideas long before they have the maturity or character to know how to deal with them. The goal of these classes is to help students by giving them the emotional, spiritual, and practical tools they need to have sexual integrity in a lust saturated world. This study will continue through the fall (with a few breaks). On Sep 24, 2014 students across the nation gathered around their flag poles for a national day of prayer. I remember as a student going to See You At the Pole. Truthfully, I wasn’t strong enough in my faith to pray out loud . It always amazes me when students will take a stand for Christ in front of all their peers by being a part of this. First of all, they are saying they belong to Jesus and secondly, they have the opportunity to pray aloud for their School, teachers, friends and the lost. I am so proud of our students for standing strong in a world that has strayed so far from the truth. Great days are ahead for our student ministry and the people they come in contact with. All Praise to our Lord and Savior Jesus!! In Him, - Bro. Chad

CHILDREN’S MINISTRY BFBC Kids Klub Monthly Virtue: CREATIVITY Using your imagination to do something unique. I recently spent a Sunday morning worshipping in a small country church. It was a step back in time like walking into a Norman Rockwell painting. There was chocolate Lab who I could not differentiate to be the church mascot or another greeter. The church was wooden and white. It had a tall steeple with a bell, which was rung by the door greeter for the ten minutes prior to church start time. Cooled only by the breeze from the doorway and the ceiling fans above, I thanked God for the cool front He had sent us. People were dressed in their best although it seemed not to matter because there was no uniform dress code. There was not a perfect person in the room, but all knew that they were perfect in the blood of Christ. You could tell by the smiles that they wore and the joy that they bore. When the time came for the welcome, the pastor thanked God for the day and His blessings. He then celebrated life by embarrassing a young, gray-haired gentleman by asking him to come to the front for his birthday song. A country band played in true honky tonk style, and professed their love for Christ with each chorus and verse. When worship and preaching had both been accomplished through the music, everyone was invited out back to do what Baptists do so well – eat. Dinner on the grounds was enjoyed by all. There were no strangers, just brothers and sisters from different towns. It was a slower day. It was a simpler day. There were no ProPresenter files to load, no lights to adjust and not one lapel mic had to be checked. No one was rushing to adjust the thermostat, and some people even wore their hats. It was breath of fresh air to see that God’s Spirit was there. He didn’t wait for a mic to be cued. He didn’t need a video display, and when someone got up to go to the bathroom, He wasn’t dismayed. He brought hope and cheer. Grace was the robe that brought for all to wear. He didn’t wait for the room to reach 72 degrees to come remind us we are free. I’m home now and I know that Sunday is coming. I already have a list of things that I need to be doing. All in order to make Sunday right, but now I’ll remember to keep Him first and in sight. So, I’ll see you Sunday (or maybe Wednesday night), I’ll greet you face to face and maybe comment on your robe of grace. Ahhh – the simple life. Bro. Alex

PRESCHOOL MINISTRIES
SUNDAY MORNINGS IN OCTOBER
Basic Truth: God Loves me. Key Question: : Who helps you do big things? Bottom Line: God helps me do big things.
Memory Verse: “We have our Lord our God to help us.” 2 Chronicles 32:8 (NLT) BIG THINGS! REALLY! REALLY! BIG THINGS! God can help us to do big things. Oh I love this song. This is just one of the awesome songs that we get to sing in our worship time with the kids. This month we are telling four of David’s stories to our preschoolers. If there was ever a life that proves God can show up in Big ways, it’s David’s life. God helped David and those that surrounded him do some really Big things. Hey, that is why the theme this month is Big Things! We’ll start this month hearing how God helped Samuel do a very big thing and pick who was going to be the new king. This story is shows us that God is always looking at and knows our hearts and that the inside is the most important part of us. Then, we will hear how God helped David defeat both a lion and bear. Always a favorite among the preschoolers, this story allows for lots of fun role-playing with the kids. Week three, preschoolers will hear the story of David and Goliath. I really enjoy this story myself, and this is such a fun one to tell as preschoolers get so excited about the idea of a little guy defeating a big guy. God really can help us do very big things. We’ll end the month sharing how God was with David throughout his military career. God helped David do big things all through his life. God can help us do anything. Because God can help us do big things, we want to make sure our kids have the opportunities to do big things. Our kids get the opportunity this Christmas to help other kids receive special gifts thanks to our Heavenly Father and your generous giving this past month. With all their work to create such special gifts for you they raised a great amount of money to make this Christmas a special one for so many kids. Thank you! - Stacey Strickland Thank you to all that donated to the Christmas in September. I am so proud of all the work our kids put into making the coasters, bookmarks and sugar scrubs. We hope that you enjoy those precious items made by our preschoolers. Thank you for helping our preschoolers make a difference in the lives of other children that might be hurting this Christmas. I am so excited to say that we raised $ $930.35 .

FROM TROY’S HEART A new name has been christened by our senior adult ministry, Encore! I love it!! An encore is given at the end of a performace when there has been joy expressed by the audience. An encore is given when the audience says, “We want more!!” In our adult Christian experience we never go off-stage or hang up our role as servants. It is with that same idea that we as adults will work to establish a ministry balanced in worship, discipleship, evangelism, missions, ministry and fellowship. We will form loving relationships inside and outside the walls of the church that will cause people to say, “We want more! Encore!!” I am excited about the ministry our Encore Council is putting in place. Be looking for Encore events in the coming months. If you are in your 50’s, 60’s, 70’s and beyond, we would love to have you as a ministry partner. On another note, I also want to express my excitement about another ministry event on the horizon, Marriage Tune Up 2 with Jeff & Debby McElroy! On January 30-February 1st, we will welcome back Jeff and Debby for our community-wide marriage conference. Last year, we had about 160 people involved in a transformative weekend. In 2015, we are believing God will fill our sanctuary with couples ready to experience honesty, challenge and good wholesome laughter. Online registration begins this month on Oct. 6 at: www.fbc-brenham.org/marriage-tune-up Please begin praying now about how you can be involved. We are forming teams right now: Prayer, Food, Decorations, Greeters, Registration, Childcare, Hospitality and Publicity. Contact me for more information at 979-836-2807 or tsikes@fbc-brenham.org . I Love you, Troy
