FROM PASTOR ROSS
Dear Church Family, I want to let you know about important development that will be taking place within the Encore Ministry (ministry for people ages 55 and older). During the interim time before I came, our Associate Pastor, Troy Sikes, was given the responsibility for what is now called “Encore Ministry.” Troy has worked hard, and I appreciate the time, energy, and service he has provided. I have asked Troy to shift the part of his job focused on retirees to helping with the welcome experience on Sunday mornings. Troy will become the point person for our adult leaders and volunteers who are focused on welcoming people on Sunday morning. Right now, these people include our ushers and our greeters at the Guest Welcome table. Troy will be the point person to ensure that our foyer area is open, everyone is in their place, and the environment is welcoming. He will also begin working on having a parking lot team. The parking lot team will help by welcoming people and providing security. I believe this will be an important and needed enhancement for our church. My prayer is that we will be the most hospitable church in our community. In order for us to be the most hospitable church on Sunday morning, I believe we need a point person to oversee and coordinate the efforts of our different welcome ministries. Troy and I are excited about this development and how it will strengthen our church. With this transition, I have decided to become the point person for the Encore Ministry. The Encore Ministry includes our Sunday School classes/small groups, weekly Bible studies, fellowships, outings, and other ministries where people 55 and older participate and serve. As we make this change, I’ve thought through some questions and provided some answers. Why are you making this change? I want shift some of Troy’s attention to strengthening our Sunday morning welcome ministries, which I believe will help our church and the Sunday morning experience. I
4
believeTroy’s organizational and leadership abilities will be especially helpful for what I am asking him to do. I also want to give some personal attention to the Encore Ministry. I believe our ministry to and with people 55 and older provides us numerous opportunities in Washington County to reach people not currently being reached and to welcome the many who are moving to our community. I want to lead us through thinking of ways we can reach and welcome these people. I also want to help continue laying the foundation of this ministry as we prepare to call a full-time Pastor of Retirees sometime between now and 2020. I believe our church (with our many generations, different worship styles, history, and future) is uniquely positioned to reach ALL the generations in our community, including and especially people 55 and older. As we move forward, we will be doing more, not less, with this ministry. What will this look like? I will have a meeting every month or once every two months that will be open to any who want to attend. The focus of the meetings will be to strategize and plan. Starting out, I pray that we’ll have different volunteer leaders who will help plan fellowships/luncheons, outings, and different volunteer opportunities within and through our church. If you are 55 and older, I can’t do this alone. I need your help to take this ministry to the next level of effectiveness and faithfulness. Our first meeting will be on Thursday, June 9th at 11:00 am in the Pahl House. What are some questions you (Ross) want to explore as you prepare to lead the Encore Ministry? - How do we help people 55 and older connect and find friendships? As people move and retire to our community who don’t have any previous connection to Brenham/ Washington County, it is important that our church be a place where new people feel welcome. - How do we help plan and prepare for the different ways generations think about aging and retirement? I’ve made the observation that the WW II generation, the Korean War generation, and the Baby Boomer generation each have 5
FROM PASTOR ROSS CONTINUED different ideas concerning how they think about and live out their later years/retirement. How do we become a church mobilized to minister to and with each of these different generations? - How do we mobilize our retirees for local and global service and missions? My prayer is that our retirees will utilize their retirement years to help serve and reach our community and world for Jesus Christ. Will Troy still be involved? Yes, Troy will still be involved, especially with pastoral care. Troy has been crucial in helping me with the pastoral care needs (checking in on people, visiting the hospital, etc.) of our church. We often visit people together, and we plan on continuing to do so. What is the God Goal for the Encore Ministry? As you may remember, during 2015, we went through a discerning process about the mission, discipleship strategy, vision, and goals of our church. Our vision is to “Be a church of ordinary people used by God in extraordinary ways.” One of the goals that flow from this vision is the following: “We will call a full-time Pastor of Retirees. He will assist in providing pastoral care and will work to equip retirees to be missionaries locally, in North America, and internationally. The dream is that one of the reasons people will want to retire to Brenham is so that they can be a part of what God is doing in and through Brenham’s First Baptist Church. This is also about a strategic focus of reaching the numerous retirees, mostly baby boomers, who are retiring to Brenham. I believe our church is uniquely placed and resourced to be a church that reaches retirees.” Praying that God may do this excites me, and I hope it excites you. Questions? A LETTER FROM THE EDITOR Dear Friends, As I was beginning to write this newsletter, I was doing some research on how we celebrate Independence Day, July 4th. I thought of the times we have celebrated as a family when our children were small. I will always remember all the July 4th celebrations in 1976, our Bi-centennial. We lived in a small town in Louisiana at the time and I had made all of the kids matching outfits of the stars and stripes. They even did a parade down our quiet little street to celebrate in their childlike ways. They talk about it with their children now and share the memories. Now I would like to share with you a poem I found while doing my research. I hope you all will keep our country in your prayers during these trying times. Blessings, Reba Pair
Jesus on the 4th of July
We gather ‘round to celebrate On Independence Day Pay homage to our country As the children run and play. With barbecues and picnics
And fireworks in the air The flag we own is proudly flown To show how much we care. The stars and stripes spell freedom She waves upon the breeze While bursts of colors can be seen Above the towering trees. This is all quite wonderful We revel in delight But God above in divine love Has brought this day to light. With just a stroke of liberty A touch of His great hand He gave democracy to us And helped this country stand. The stripes upon our stately flag Were touched by His sweet grace Each star of white that shines so bright Reflects His loving face. So as you turn to face the flag For battles that were fought Be filled with pride for those who died And freedoms that were bought. But don’t forget to thank the One That gives the bright display The reason why we paint the sky On Independence Day. Copyright © Marilyn Ferguson 2003 ferguson@adams.net
SCRIPTURE OF THE MONTH “Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.” 2 Corinthians 3:17 THOUGHT OF THE MONTH “Prayer is the key to heaven, but faith unlocks the door.”

STUDENT MINISTRY
Does anybody else out there think June was a blur? In the midst of the chaos, I remember more-than-one sunburn, several road trips, and lots of fun. The Student Ministry kicked off summer with a trip to the newly built Typhoon Texas waterpark in Katy. Then we started a poolside Bible Study. The next week we took a huge group to the Comal River for a day-long float, and then we loaded up like bandits in the night and headed to Glorieta, New Mexico for FUGE camp. We’ve kept a steady supply of sunscreen and aloe around our house.
outside of Tegucigalpa to minister in the villages. We will be building a kitchen, having VBS, and working in a village clinic. Please be in prayer for us as we travel. This is always a little nerveracking and we need every prayer we can get for safety and as few complications as possible. Also, please pray for the people we come in contact with in Honduras. Pray that their hearts would be open to the Spirit and to the Good News. Every year we see people’s lives changed. Thank you so much for praying and supporting this mission trip.
Now we are gearing up for the Honduras Mission Trip. This year we have 24 people traveling to the mountains

CHILDREN’S MINISTRY “Timothy, guard what has been entrusted to you, avoiding irreverent, empty speech and contradictions from the “knowledge” that falsely bears that name. By professing it, some people have deviated from the faith. Grace be with all of you.” (1 Timothy 6:20-21, HCSB) At the time that I am writing this article, I am in McAllen, TX with the beTWEENers on the Disciple Trip. This is the trip that gives the kids an opportunity to walk as the disciple that we have been teaching them to be. Anyway, one night after VBS, there was an area of the commons that had been marked off as “off-limits” with caution tape. The commons area is a large, open space. Even with this one sitting area blocked off, there was still plenty of room to congregate. However, guess where all the kids wanted to be? Correct. Like a picnic attracts ants, this caution tape was a magnet to practically every child – even though the night prior this area was relatively barren of children. One kid even approached the tape, looked directly at his mother and purposely came less than one inch from touching the tape as if testing his mother’s response.
Since the beginning of time, the cliché – “like a moth drawn to a flame” – applies ever so appropriately to the attraction the human race has to that which is forbidden. Coincidentally, the lesson taught in VBS that night was about protecting your spiritual garden from the weeds of sin. Like that child testing his mother, we like to see how close we can get to the flame of sin without getting burnt. However, like a marshmallow doesn’t have to be in the flame to get burnt, we can get burned by sin just by being too close. So through all the metaphors, let me ask this question: “What temptations do you think you can control, but are walking dangerously upon the precipice?” Just like a garden has to be constantly weeded, we need to be vigilant to keep sins out of our garden and keep away from the fire. Children’s Ministry continue on page 14.

FROM TROY’S HEART A few days ago, I was running through a neighborhood and was carried back in time to my childhood in a very curious way, through smell. When I was a kid, my great-grandmother (Nanny) had a Mimosa tree that I loved to climb, sit in and pick the little parts of the leaves. When the tree was flowering, it gave off the sweetest smell. On this particular morning run, I smelled the fragrance of the Mimosa flower and was instantly a child again. In the steps that followed, I could see my tree, my Nanny’s porch and the garden where I picked beans, peas and okry (okra). Isn’t it amazing that God created our body and mind to work in such a way that our olfactory system can be a time machine?
and sometimes our hearts. In 2 Corinthian 2:14 Paul tells us, “But thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumphal procession in Christ and through us spreads everywhere the fragrance of the knowledge of Him.” Are we a beautiful fragrance, by the way we lead our lives, to those who do not have a knowledge of Jesus? It is my hope that everywhere we go, the goodness of Jesus’ presence in us lingers like a sweet perfume. There are so many people who need the fragrance of life we carry within us. Let’s not be selfish in spreading the knowledge and love of Jesus. I love you, Troy
Fragrance is a powerful attraction. Whether it is food or a flower, smells pull us in, capture our minds
