FROM PASTOR ROSS I always love the start of a new year. It allows us the opportunity to look ahead and be in prayer for what God may do through our lives, our families, and our church. As we begin this year, here are two areas I’d like you to pray about for 2017: -During 2017, we will, with God’s help, come to unity and agreement about the Master Plan and Phase One of our relocation. Our next church-wide input session will be on January 15th from 4:00-6:00 pm in the Gym. This will be an opportunity to review numerous changes that are being made to the Master Plan that came from our last church-wide input session on November 13, 2016. We will also start discussing Phase One. (Please note: these are input sessions and are not, at this point, about presenting any finalized form for voting.) Once our church votes and approves the Master Plan and Phase One, we will shift to a capital campaign. One of our “God Goals 2020” is to build Phase One without debt. The primary reason for building without debt is that we want the relocation to be about faith building and not just facility building. Because this will be about faith building, please know that there will not be a lot high-pressured tactics to try to get you to give. Instead, the focus will be about God’s leading you and what He may be asking you to give. (Please note: you can give anytime to the relocation effort by placing “New Facilities Designated Fund” on a check made out to the church or by going to our website, http://www.fbc-brenham.org/give/, clicking on “New Facilities Fund” in our online giving.) -Another area I’d like for us to be in prayer about is about shifting to being an outward-focused, evangelistic church. As we continue to become healthier as a church, I believe one of the most important shifts will be a shift from primarily focusing inward on our own needs toward the literal thousands of people in Washington County who don’t have a relationship with Christ and will spend eternity in Hell if they don’t place their faith in Jesus Christ. Connected to this outward-focused shift, one of our “God Goals 2020” is to average at least one baptism per Sunday (52 per year) by the year 2020. According to the Annual Church Profile of the Southern Baptist Convention, which is filled out every year and reports September – September, we reported seven baptisms from September 2015 – September 2016. My response to this is two-fold: (1) I’m profoundly thankful for the seven people who gave public testimony to Jesus Christ through baptism, and (2) I believe God is asking us, with the resources and wonderful people that make up our church, to pray, be burdened, and plan for more people in our community being reached through our church. Personally, I want you to know that I’m becoming more burdened for the lost in our community. I will be speaking with our staff about ways we can become more outreach focused, how events like the Home Improvement Weekend can also be opportunities to help people come to know Jesus Christ, how we can train people in ways of sharing the faith, etc. My commitment in this is that I don’t believe in using gimmicks or baptizing people just to pad statistics. Instead, I believe the opportunities to reach the lost in our community will begin by God burdening each of our hearts and seeking Him in prayer. Once again, I believe 2017 is going to be a wonderful year for our church, and I’m excited about what I sense God is going to do in and through our church. Can I ask a favor of you? In addition to praying about our relocation and our evangelistic focus, will you please pray for my family and me? As we see God do more, I need to rely on Him daily as I seek to be a godly husband, father, and pastor. I’m honored to be your pastor, and thank you for allowing me to be your pastor.

MUSIC MINISTRY

Happy New Year! I’m so thankful to everyone in our music and media ministries who worked so hard on our Christmas presentation of, CASTING CALL. What a fantastic weekend to be a part of and experience. We set out in September to try and tell the Christmas story in a fresh and engaging way, and I feel confident that we achieved that goal. God provided the right people in the right roles at JUST the right time in order to bring it all together (He’s good about that). Our actors and actresses took on the challenge and did a magnificent job, and the collaborative efforts of the choir and orchestra were exquisite. WELL DONE, EVERYONE! As we start this New Year, I am reminded of (and greatly challenged by) the prayer of the 16th century English sea captain, Sir Francis Drake. He prayed: Disturb us, Lord, when We are too pleased with ourselves, When our dreams have come true Because we dreamed too little, When we arrived safely Because we sailed too close to the shore. Disturb us, Lord, when with the abundance of things we possess We have lost our thirst For the waters of life; Having fallen in love with life, We have ceased to dream of eternity And in our efforts to build a new earth, We have allowed our vision Of the new Heaven to dim. Disturb us, Lord, to dare more boldly, To venture on wilder seas Where storms will show Your mastery; Where losing sight of land, We shall find the stars. We ask you to push back The horizons of our hopes; And to push back the future In strength, courage, hope, and love. This we ask in the name of our Captain, Who is Jesus Christ. May this be our prayer in 2017. That our comforts would be “disturbed” and that God would take us, as individuals and as a church, further than we ever imagined for His glory and the sake of His Kingdom! The year of our Lord, 2017 – may it be the best yet! Toiling on… Charles Covin

Piece Makers closed out 2016 with a festive holiday Soup and Salad luncheon for the Church and School Staff. Melinda VanOstrand and Delores from New Beginnings Pregnancy Assistance Ministry were on hand to receive our gifts of handmade baby blankets, knitted caps, Mommy Bags, fleece bears, baby clothing and toys to help further this ministry to new mothers in our area. A LETTER FROM REBA

Happy New Year , As I was thinking about writing this article about the upcoming New Year I just kept thinking about two things. First, I thought of a renewal of spirit in the New Year when we have the opportunity to start fresh. Secondly, I long to just sit quietly. Somedays I just wish I could sit in a dark room and enjoy the quiet instead of staying as busy as I do. Then I remembered this poem I had on file that our very own Bracy wrote in 1999. I hope he doesn’t mind me sharing it again. When I think of the New Year I tend to reflect on the last year and what I would want to do differently if the opportunity was to present itself again. Let us not be quick to react, but let us sit in a quiet place and contemplate on the best reaction to the situation, always seeking God’s will in our lives. I hope you each have a blessed and healthy new year. In Him, THOUGHT OF Reba Pair

BIBLE VERSE OF THE MONTH “But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” Isaiah 40:31

THE MONTH

Quiet By Rev. Bracy Bledsoe Quiet is bigger than me, deeper than any sea. Open the door and it seems to hit you in the face…. It seems to saturate the place. You long to hear a familiar sound, Only to realize no one is around. You can mourn and you can pray… The quiet seems to stay. It can be your enemy or your friend… Lingering days without end. Which shall it be? This is strictly up to me. Quiet has no pain, with it there is much to gain. It is with the young and old, making is strong and bold. Alone with no one by your side, only to realize the Lord is standing by. Someday it will leave… Then you will have sweet peace.

STUDENT MINISTRY

Well it is a new year and things are starting to pick up for our student ministry and we will be at a fast pace till the end of summer. This month on the 20th – 22th we will be having D-Now Weekend. Last year we partnered up with Champion Fellowship and hosted the event on our campus. This year Champion Fellowship will be hosting. We also invited two other youth groups to be a part of Disciple Now. I am so excited that we will be having a combined worship service at the High School auditorium on Sunday, January 22. This isn’t just for the students - it’s for everyone! Church family, I hope you will be there to support our students and worship with our community. You will be truly blessed by this experience. I am so looking forward to worshiping all together; it just gives me chill bumps thinking about it. I guess my spirit longs for the day that we will all be worshiping our Father in heaven. Many people have asked how they can help with D-Now. Here are a few ways: Start praying for our students that there would be nothing holding them back from this powerful weekend. Pray for our student leaders that will be in host homes teaching our students. Pray that God would speak through them and use them to be a catalyst in our students’ lives. Pray for our host homes (especially the boys home). Pray our hosts would be blessed and encouraged through this experience. Pray for our Speaker Ty Hagewood. Ty is one of my former students and is currently leading a student ministry in Albuquerque, NM. God has had His hand on Ty’s life and I am so proud and honored that our students will be sitting under his Godly teaching for the weekend. Pray for our worship leader David Knuckles, a good friend of mine currently leading worship in Louisiana. I have known David for the past fifteen years and boy are you and our students in for a real treat for worship. The theme for D-Now weekend is about living a life like The Apostle Paul a life “DRIVEN” for Christ. I know everything begins with bathing it in prayer. I desperately want to see one thing happen this weekend… I want to see LIVES changed and I know it will begin with our prayer warriors (YOU) lifting the five key things up every day in the days leading up to D-Now Weekend. I can’t begin to tell you what a honor it is to be the Student Pastor here at Brenham’s FBC because every time I have asked for your help, church family, you have stepped up and allowed God to be glorified through you by placing Him first. In Him, Bro. Chad Other important dates: Honduras Missions – July 18-26, 2017 – Sign up online is now open (Get your spot now before we run out!) FUGE Camp in Panama, FL – June 27- July 1, 2017 – Sign up starts online January 1, 2017. Men’s Cake Bake – January 29, 2017 following the Business Meeting in the GYM. CHILDREN’S MINISTRY “1-Remember your Creator in the days of your youth, before the days of trouble come and the years approach when you will say, “I find no pleasure in them”— 2 before the sun and the light and the moon and the stars grow dark, and the clouds return after the rain;” Ecclesiastes 12:1-2

Good Morning, Today is a cloudy day. The skies are grey and the sun could not be seen as I left home this morning. This made the soon coming image brilliant as I crested the hill of which I live at the bottom. Off to my left, and through the trees, I noticed blinking red lights, and I immediately assumed emergency vehicles were attending to matters at a neighbor’s house. Discerning the lighting better as I swiftly approached, I now assumed the lights were not upon vehicles, but within the trees to which my thoughts attributed to Christmas lighting. However, as I drew nearer, I noticed that the light was directly above my neighbor’s house. I now assumed the house was on fire. Then my heart relaxed and melted as the horizon expanded within my vision, and I realized this bright red light was not man-made or destroying a home, but instead was being cast from the sun. I will be 44 on Saturday, and in that time there has not been one day lived without the sun. However, I watched in great amazement at the intense shade of red my eyes have not witnessed emitted from this overhead faithful friend before this day. As I did not stop (I had kids that needed to get to school) the moment was over within seconds as the next hill eclipsed the sun’s rich hues. I continued to search for another glimpse throughout the drive, but was disappointed as the clouds had completely covered God’s fantastic light show. Immediately, I began to think of God. I thought about His great ability to make such a beautiful, yet practical, instrument of inspiration. God used this everyday object to remind me of His beauty. We live with the sun each day but often take it for granted, and do not stand in awe of its beauty, and its precise function for our lives. God too is with us each day, but how often do we stand (or sit) in awe of His greatness? Knowledge is discovering something new so you can be better at whatever you do. I challenge you to discover new things about God by spending more time admiring Him. However, I equally challenge you to be better at whatever you do by acknowledging the faithful God who shines brilliantly upon your day whether clouded by life’s struggles or appears as regular as a yellow sun on a clear day. Do not save your moments of awe for just when He privileges you with a glimpse of a new color from His palette. His Servant & Yours, Bro. Alex

PRESCHOOL MINISTRIES Happy New Year! I hope you all had a fantastic Christmas season filled with joy, laughter, and love. Now that our preschoolers have heard that Jesus was born, it’s time for them to learn that He is with them ALL THE TIME and He is all they need. Throughout the month, our children will hear how Jesus was there for people in the past. He was there when the blind man needed Him. He was there when a man was lowered from the roof by his friends on a mat needed Him. He was there to heal the deaf man and the lepers who needed Him. He was there to calm the storm when the disciples needed Him. Just like when He was there when all those people needed Him in the past, He will be there when we need Him in the future. That’s what we want to plant in the hearts of our preschoolers this month. Jesus is all we need, and He is with us ALL THE TIME. Blessings, Stacey Strickland Director of Preschool Ministries

FROM TROY’S HEART From My heart... I hope you and your family have had a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! It is my prayer that you enjoyed some wonderful family time and made some lasting memories over the holidays. One special memory I will hold on to from Christmas 2016 will be the Adam’s Angels Christmas Party at MD Anderson Cancer Center. Along with about 40 other volunteers, I was treated to an experience of a lifetime as children picked toys from Santa’s workshop and sat on his lap. The delight and joy on their faces was priceless! These children and their families have been battling cancer with a fortitude and resilience many of us cannot imagine. For one day they were able to experience an escape from their routine and be blessed by a Christmas celebration. Yes, my heart warmed with what I saw in the eyes and smiles of the children, but another thought brightened my soul that day. For the party to happen this year it took hundreds of people in our community to give gifts and volunteer their time. For Adam’s Angels to operate and give unconditionally to hundreds of families each year, it takes people to rally around the vision and love of Donna & Tim Culliver and their ministry angels. The blessing I received on Wednesday, Dec. 14 was not just watching children open gifts, it was seeing our community love the Cullivers through their personal loss for the past 12 years. To little Adam Culliver I was his “worship man”, but to me he and the Cullivers are a living example of enduring love. Check out their work at www. adamsangelsministry.org I love you, Troy
