MA Painting: Curricular units, topics and Teachers

O Mestrado de Pintura da Faculdade de Belas-Artes da Universidade de Lisboa perfaz, no presente ano letivo, década e meia de existência. Curso pioneiro no domínio das pós-graduações especificamente artísticas em Portugal, abriu pela primeira vez com o dealbar do novo milénio por iniciativa da Professora Isabel Sabino e, durante várias edições, teve periodicidade bianual. Nessa fase, o início de cada curso pode coincidir equilibradamente com o termo da edição anterior. A implementação do processo de Bolonha, ocorrida alguns anos mais tarde, implicou um novo tipo de pressão sobre a estrutura inicial, com a substituição das cadeiras anuais por semestrais (uma regra imposta do exterior, pouco adequada à atividade projetual artística) e abertura do curso em todos anos letivos, o que significou, na prática, a duplicação do número efetivo de estudantes. Hoje, quando em Setembro recebemos os novos mestrandos, os que foram admitidos no ano anterior estão apenas a meio da sua formação e isto apesar de o espaço disponível ser o mesmo de sempre.

Se o quadro presente é mais desfavorável do ponto de vista logístico, funcional e mesmo financeiro (os cortes do orçamento de Estado atingiram o ensino universitário no seu todo), pedagogicamente o curso permanece fiel aos objetivos de origem. As cadeiras nucleares do Mestrado de Pintura, tal como as da Licenciatura que o antecede, focalizam-se na ação projetual dos estudantes nas suas múltiplas dimensões, funcionando como referência para a atividade desenvolvida nas restantes disciplinas. O Projeto Artístico ocupa, ainda e sempre, o cerne da ação pedagógica: desde logo a nível da prática artística, uma prática aberta, sintonizada com os valores da contemporaneidade, mas também da vertente teórica que com ela dialoga. Neste curso, as dimensões teórica e prática articulam-se de modo equilibrado, como as duas faces de uma mesma moeda, preservando simultaneamente a sua autonomia e a sua necessária interdependência. É desse trabalho plurifacetado, onde confluem as componentes essenciais a uma atividade artística consistente que resultaram, em devido tempo, as dissertações de que a presente publicação dá agora conta.

Estamos perante um conjunto de obras e de dissertações onde não é possível detetar direções únicas, formais ou conceptuais.

No Mestrado de Pintura não há exercícios a cumprir ou padrões uniformizadores aos quais obedecer. Ao longo dos dois anos de curso a grande prioridade prende-se com a descoberta de vias individualizadas e com a definição e aprofundamento da identidade de cada um enquanto autor.

Assistimos, assim, ao desenrolar de percursos diferenciados, saudavelmente contrastantes, que tanto podem dar prioridade a aspetos eminentemente formais como preocuparse com a articulação arte/vida; que tanto podem realizar-se através da pintura e de suportes mais ou menos tradicionais como enveredar por vias alternativas, da fotografia ao vídeo, instalação ou ação performativa.

Assinale-se, por último, a variabilidade desses percursos, pontuados por fases tantas vezes contrastantes, das mais coesas e lineares típicas dos períodos criativos em que tudo bate certo e as intenções autorais se entrosam com os resultados concretos, aos momentos de incerteza, de dúvida, em que o passado tem que ser ultrapassado e as obras partem em busca de novas direções.

Os trabalhos agora apresentados fecham este ciclo de estudos, constituindo um breve balanço, inevitavelmente sectorial, de dois anos de trabalho realizado no âmbito do Mestrado de Pintura. Através deles podemos descobrir algo da riqueza e diversidade das vias trilhadas por cada um e, nas linhas e entrelinhas de texto e imagem, indícios preciosos do que poderão vir a ser as suas obras futuras.

Título A repetição como tempo e como prática artística Orientador Prof. Auxiliar Tomás Maia

Qual a pertinência da repetição no quotidiano?

Qual a sua relação com o tempo e a arte?

Através da análise de obras de Jacques Derrida, Jean-Marie Pontévia, Friedrich Nietzsche e Béla Tarr, a rotina (enquanto expressão quotidiana da repetição) é entendida como eterno retorno e base estruturante da vida. O presente que não se apresenta como pontualidade simples e indivisível — sendo intangível como a identidade —, actualiza-se constantemente e alarga-se sem fronteiras definidas. Nele somos rastro do que fomos e expectativa do que poderemos ser, porque vivemos no amanhã e no ontem, numa diferença do presente consigo mesmo.

A repetição enquanto acção — cria, ensina, dirige, organiza e permite saber quem somos, identificar signos e pensar, construir a representação do mundo. Deste modo, se articulada com a diferença, a repetição pode ser pensada como possibilidade da arte. Ela permite recordar, representar e re-apresentar, recriando o visível.

Assim, é fonte criadora e é a certeza de que o que foi também será — é, em suma, o paradoxo da repetição do irrepetível: como cada dia, cada rotina ou cada pensamento.

Título De uma paleta sem tinta se fez luz e espaço Orientador Profª. Catedrática Isabel Sabino

O projeto que aqui se desenvolve consiste numa investigação centrada nas fronteiras do próprio campo artístico, mais especificamente da pintura e da escultura.

Nasce como reflexo da realidade social tecnológica que a artista pretende retratar e assenta essencialmente em três características formais: a geometria, a cor e a dimensão (bidimensionalidade/tridimensionalidade).

A realidade é codificada através de um exercício bidimensional que se transforma, posteriormente, numa realidade tridimensional. Essa realidade cria um espaço imersivo em que a presença de um espectador parece, de novo, remeter tudo para uma experiência com forte participação da imagem, do bidimensional.

TĂ­tulo On the Brazilian Modern Art and artist Lygia Clark accompanying a training at the Zacheta National Art Gallery Orientador Prof. Auxiliar Carlos Vidal

The main subject of my thesis is to explore the Brazilian culture through an internship in an art gallery. Here I describe the experience gained during the internship at Zacheta National Art Gallery in Warsaw, where I worked for six months as an intern and assistant curator of the Educational Service. Considered important to present the knowledge I acquired while I worked in the gallery as the gallery and works as a national art institution. Another important aspect was how I work with other employees and how to find a subjective attitude to each of the works of art displayed there.

Furthermore the theoretical part is focused on a history of Brazilian Modern Art presented throughout the public art institutions from Brazil, for example Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro. Chronologically are presented Brazilian art institutions, with which the Zacheta gallery was collaborating in order to organize the exhibition "Love and Hate to Lygia Clark". The curator went to Brazil in order to collect the artworks latter displayed on exhibition in Poland.

Together, analyzing the Brazilian culture I also analyze artworks of the contemporary Brazilian artists who participated in exhibition "Love and Hate to Lygia Clark" at the Zacheta National Art Gallery. Their projects were influenced by the artistic achievements of the previous generation of Brazilian artists, especially representatives of the Modern Art of the 60's and 70's.

Following the example of Modern Art my paper describes in particular Lygia Clark's artistic activity together with three contemporary Brazilian artists. The young artists participated in exhibition "Love and Hate to Lygia Clark" created artworks, which were subjectively referring to Mrs. Clark work.

The practical part of my thesis is the continuation of my adventure with Brazilian culture. During my research I gained knowledge about Brazil not only about Lygia Clark's art. I confronted my ideas about country Brazil with the natives that I met in Portugal and Poland.

I learned about politics, social live, cinematography, architecture, music, people's attitude to values as family and friendship.

Título Da Teatralidade ao Simulacro: a Condição Empática do Espectador Orientador Prof. Auxiliar Carlos Vidal

From Ape to Star é uma instalação composta por seis fotografias, uma impressão digital de dna fingerprints e a Evolution box. Tendo como ponto de partida o anti-retrato e a ausência de um rosto, evidencia-se a não identificação do sujeito. Este trabalho centra-se na exploração do corpo e do retrato, aplicado a questões universais (genética humana), e também actuais, de globalização e artificialidade. Formalmente, explorou-se a substituição e a integração do espectador na própria imagem. As figuras estão de costas, numa posição frontal, ignoram o espectador, mas ignorando-o também o espelham. Cria-se uma mise en abyme.

Em From Ape to Star, o que não se vê não existe, mas está lá, tal como o espectador que não vê o seu rosto (é o olho, com a sua capacidade de ver, que nunca se torna visível para si próprio, ou o rosto, único em cada um, que é inalcançável ao olhar de si próprio). Fala-se aqui de um corpo (o do espectador) que não se pode conhecer e que na sua existência de não reconhecimento é invisual para si próprio. O medium (construção da imagem), a luz (que possibilita a existência da fotografia e da ocularidade) e o rosto (que vê e não se vê) são invisuais, encontram-se na camada que a imagem escondeu. A imagem torna-se ilusão e simulacro e, por isso, From Ape to Star não é mais do que a invisualidade de si e o conhecimento artificial do todo.

Título DA CÓPIA AO ORIGINAL: AS TENSÕES DA PINTURA Orientador Prof. Auxiliar Carlos Vidal

Os conceitos de original, cópia e múltiplo, que contextualizam grande parte da produção artística actual, são analisados no âmbito de práticas de apropriação que colocam em relevo as noções de reprodução, versão e citação. Estes conceitos são criticamente examinados à luz das transformações resultantes da massiva divulgação da imagem reproduzida, no âmbito das alterações tecnológicas da sociedade industrial, e numa perspectiva histórica e sócio-política. A apropriação de imagens, assim como as técnicas e os conceitos relacionados com a confiscação, reflectem a importância que a noção de autoria passou a ter nas produções de vários artistas. Uma inter-relação de estratégias, tendo em consideração um novo papel da fotografia e da apropriação, tem vindo a permitir a articulação das várias disciplinas da arte, que se reflecte em novas produções elaboradas com base em múltiplas técnicas e suportes. No desenvolvimento deste trabalho surgiu a hipótese de explorar fotograficamente as pinturas produzidas, dando autonomia às novas captações fotográficas.

Título O RETRATO EXPRESSIVO: Encenação e Suspense Orientador Prof. Auxiliar José Carlos Pereira Co-orientador Prof. Auxiliar Manuel Botelho

Neste projeto pictórico, intitulado "Vultos", a memória é rasurada em favor do seu próprio fantasma, estimulando o olhar que olha a pintura. A ideia que surge nesta pesquisa consiste na tentativa de criação do que apelidamos de "suspense pictórico", aliando a imagem com o tempo e a gestualidade da pintura, traduzindo a dimensão concetual e, em simultâneo, a prática do retrato. Não apenas a composição, mas os acentuados contrastes cromáticas, e a sobreposição obsessiva da mancha, dão corpo plástico a uma dimensão misteriosa, e de suspeita, as quais constituem uma interpelação primeira do espetador, funcionando como dois dos polos que condicionam a experiência estética destas obras.

Título Tabula Rasa Revolução, Subversão e Transgressão: um estudo sociocultural da década de 60 Orientador Prof. Auxiliar Carlos Vidal

Em Isidore Ducasse os impulsos humanos recorrem à violência como finalidade: o animal no homem como justificação do terror por si imposto. As cisões na história ocorrem quando o homem compreende a possibilidade da sua natureza violenta, quando se projecta a si mesmo fora dos paradigmas humanos, libertando-se de um passado estagnado. É a vertigem o momento em que o homem se desdobra em si mesmo para projectar o seu ente revolucionário. Na vertigem o homem contempla, sob os seus pés, as máscaras a que se reduz o passado; a vertigem liberta a violência sob a forma de revolução a arte, revelando-se como o sublime na revolução. Pretende-se, com Cartas a Isidore, pinturas que constituam uma tentativa de recriação do mundo em treva de Ducasse, metáforas de uma correspondência imaginária.

A palavra Tinta, na gramática, substantivo feminino de Tinto, proveniente do latim tinctus, significa, matéria corante, para tingir ou pintar. Por sua vez, Acrílico, substantivo masculino, refere-se ao Ácido hidrossolúvel que forma polímeros.

A tinta acrílica é composta pelo pigmento e medium acrílico. Este veículo tem a sua origem em componentes plásticos, derivados do petróleo. É de salientar que esta tinta enquanto produto final tem um grau de toxicidade baixo, mas a produção do seu veículo é inicialmente derivada de um meio poluente, que terá que ser manipulado com as devidas precauções.

Esta tinta de base aquosa, composta por pigmento e veículo, foi desenvolvida na segunda metade dos anos quarenta, do século vinte, para uso industrial. Destinavase à pintura de cobertura de interiores e exteriores de edifícios, que despertou a atenção de outros mercados, em particular da comunidade artística. Em 1955, a Liquitex disponibilizou a primeira abordagem artística deste novo tipo de tinta e mais tarde Rowney Company1 introduziu-a na Europa.

O acrílico tem sido usado por artistas que exploram as suas capacidades e potencialidades, como alternativa à pintura a óleo. O facto de ser uma tinta de base aquosa tem permitido a sua inter-relação com outros meios plásticos, gerando uma multiplicidade de técnicas mistas. Esta técnica tem sido relevante na criação de obra artística, sendo-lhe atribuída a responsabilidade na abertura de novos caminhos na pintura.

Reuniu-se informação sobre a tinta acrílica, mencionando as suas características e potencialidades no meio artístico. A investigação em questão tem como propósito a compreensão dos materiais, das matérias, dos instrumentos utilizados, e das tecnologias utilizadas para a construção da obra de pintura.

Na prática artística pessoal, com base numa investigação contínua na produção nas artes plásticas, tem-se vindo a acumular experiência e conhecimento na utilização de materiais menos agressivos em níveis de toxicidade. Existe particular interesse em desenvolver este tema, por razões alergénicas pessoais como pela particular sensibilidade à tinta a óleo, respectivos médiuns e semelhantes variantes.

O presente documento pretende fornecer e sintetizar informações e conhecimentos sólidos sobre o uso de tintas acrílicas na pintura a quem, com ou sem formação artística, os procurar ou necessitar.

A introdução desta tinta tornou possível a aproximação progressiva do utilizador ao meio, possibilitando um gesto mais livre, de acordo com a sua característica de toxicidade, a capacidade fléxivel/expansível e o tempo de secagem.

A investigação em causa tem por objetivo a síntese de alguns conhecimentos adquiridos e conjugá-los com novos dados num estudo intenso e continuado em meios não tóxicos e alternativos para utilização diária na criação da obra de pintura. Como temas centrais apontam-se o contexto histórico de surgimento da tinta acrílica, a sua contemporaneidade e as suas características técnicas.

Licenciada em Artes Plásticas-Pintura pela FBAUL. Entre várias formações interdisciplinares, salienta-se a frequência no Workshop de Gravura de David de Almeida em 2008. This academic year the Masters Course in Painting at the University of Lisbon Faculty of Fine Arts will be in its fifteenth year. This is a pioneering course in the field of specifically artistic post graduations in Portugal, and opened for the first time at the turn of the new millennium due to the initiative of Professor Isabel Sabino, functioning twice-annually for some time. In that early phase the beginning of each course could easily coincide with the end of the previous one. The implementation of the Bologna Process, which took place some years later, implied a new type of pressure on the initial structure, with the replacing of some annual subjects by semester-long ones (an externally-imposed rule which was not really suited to the activity of the artistic project) and the opening of the course in all the academic teaching years, which in practical terms meant the duplication of the number of students. Today, when we receive the new masters students in September, those who were granted entry in the previous year are only in the middle of their learning process … And this is despite the available space being the same as it always was.

Although the present situation is less favourable from the logistical, functional and even financial point of view (government budget cuts have affected university teaching as a whole), in pedagogical terms the course remains true to its original aims. The core subjects of the Masters in Painting, just like those of the Bachelors Degree Course that comes before it, focus on the students’ performance in the many dimensions this involves, functioning as a reference for the activity carried out in the other subjects taken.

The Artistic Project has always, and still does, occupy the centre of the pedagogical action: first of all on the level of artistic practice — an open practice, in line with the values of the contemporary condition of art — but also with a theoretical side with which it is in a dialogue. In this course the theoretical and practical dimension are balanced, like two sides of the same coin, simultaneously preserving their autonomy and their necessary interdependence. The dissertations that the present publication considers are the result of this multi-faceted work, where the components necessary to a consistent artistic activity are brought together.

We are in the presence of a set of works and dissertations in which it is not possible to

detect single, formal or conceptual directions.

In the Masters Course in Painting there are no exercises to carry out or standard patterns that need be obeyed. Over the two years of the course the major priority has to do with the discovery of individualised paths and with the defining and deepening of each person’s identity as an author. We thus witness the development of different paths that are healthily contrasting, that may grant priority to eminently formal aspects or be concerned with the art/life articulation; which may be carried out through painting and on more or less traditional supports or can involve alternative paths, ranging from photography to video, installation or performance art.

Finally, it should be pointed out that these different study paths are greatly varied, often involving contrasting phases, going from the most cohesive and linear ones that are typical of the creative periods when everything makes sense and authorial intentions fit in with concrete results, to the moments of uncertainty and of doubt, in which the past needs to be overcome and the works set off seeking new directions.

The works presented here close this study cycle and form a brief and inevitably sectorial overview of two years of work carried out within the Masters Course in Painting.

Through them we can discover something of the richness and diversity of the paths followed by each student and, in between the lines of these texts and images, see precious indications as to what may be their future works.

What is the relevance of repetition in everyday life?

What is the contact point between time and art?

Through the analysis of Jacques Derrida, Jean-Marie Pontévia, Friedrich Nietzsche and Béla Tarr’s works, the routine (while daily expression of repetition) is understood as eternal return and structural basis of life.

As intangible as identity itself, the present isn´t a simple and indivisible point, being constantly updated and extended without precise borders. In it we are a trace of what we were and the expectation of what we can be, because we live in the tomorrow and in the yesterday, in the difference of the present with itself.

Repetition, whilst action, creates, teaches, directs, organises and permits knowing who we are, letting us identify signs, and think, and build the representation of the world. Therefore, if articulated with difference, one can think of repetition as the possibility of art. It permits remembering, representing, recreating the visible.

This way, repetition is a creative source, and it assures us that what once was, will, in the future, be; briefly speaking, it is the paradox of the repetition of something unrepeatable: just like every day, every routine or every thought.

Title De uma paleta sem tinta se fez luz e espaço Supervisor Full Prof. Isabel Sabino The project in development here consists on an investigation centred on the art field’s boundaries, more precisely in painting and sculpture. It arises as a reflection of the technological society that the artist wants to represent and is based on three formal characteristics: geometry, colour and dimension (twodimensionality / three-dimensionality). Reality is encoded through a two-dimensional exercise that later turns into a three-dimensional reality. That reality creates an immersive space where, once again, a spectator’s presence seems to refer everything to an experience where the image (and two-dimensionality) has a strong role to play.

Title On the Brazilian Modern Art and artist Lygia Clark accompanying a training at the Zacheta National Art Gallery Supervisor Assistant Prof. Carlos Vidal

The main subject of my thesis is to explore the Brazilian culture through an internship in an art gallery.

Here I describe the experience gained during the internship at Zacheta National Art Gallery in Warsaw, where I worked for six months as an intern and assistant curator of the Educational Service. Considered important to present the knowledge I acquired while I worked in the gallery as the gallery and works as a national art institution. Another important aspect was how I work with other employees and how to find a subjective attitude to each of the works of art displayed there.

Furthermore the theoretical part is focused on a history of Brazilian Modern Art presented throughout the public art institutions from Brazil, for example Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro. Chronologically are presented Brazilian art institutions, with which the Zacheta gallery was collaborating in order to organize the exhibition "Love and Hate to Lygia Clark". The curator went to Brazil in order to collect the artworks latter displayed on exhibition in Poland.

Together, analyzing the Brazilian culture I also analyze artworks of the contemporary Brazilian artists who participated in exhibition "Love and Hate to Lygia Clark" at the Zacheta National Art Gallery. Their projects were influenced by the artistic achievements of the previous generation of Brazilian artists, especially representatives of the Modern Art of the 60's and 70's.

Following the example of Modern Art my paper describes in particular Lygia Clark's artistic activity together with three contemporary Brazilian artists. The young artists participated in exhibition "Love and Hate to Lygia Clark" created artworks, which were subjectively referring to Mrs. Clark work.

The practical part of my thesis is the continuation of my adventure with Brazilian culture. During my research I gained knowledge about Brazil not only about Lygia Clark's art. I confronted my ideas about country Brazil with the natives that I met in Portugal and Poland.

I learned about politics, social live, cinematography, architecture, music, people's attitude to values as family and friendship.

Title Da Teatralidade ao Simulacro: a Condição Empática do Espectador Supervisor Assistant Prof. Carlos Vidal

From Ape to Star is an installation which consists of six photographs, a dna fingerprint image, and the Evolution box. This work departs from the idea of anti-portrait and the absence of a face, stressing the non-identification of the subject. This work focuses on exploring the body and the portrait, addressing universal and also current issues — human genetics, globalization and artificiality. The formal exploration focuses on the replacement and integration of the spectator in the image. The subjects in the photos turn their backs to us.

They are in a frontal position and ignore the spectator, though, by resorting to this position, these figures also mirror the spectator. There is a mise en abyme.

In From Ape to Star, that which can´t be seen does not exist, although it remains present, just like the spectator who doesn’t see his own face (it is the eye, which is able to see the world but is blind to itself, or the face, unique to every person but unattainable by one’s own gaze). One speaks of a body (the spectator’s) that can’t know itself and in whose non recognition is blind to itself. The medium (which makes the images emerge), the light (at the core of photography and which allows the images to be seen), and the face (that sees but can´t see itself), are un-visual, and are located in the layer that the image has concealed.

An image becomes simulacra and illusion and, for that reason, From Ape to Star is no more than the blindness to oneself and the artificial knowledge of totality.

Title FROM COPY TO ORIGINAL: THE TENSIONS OF PAINTING

Original, copy and multiple, are concepts which contextualize most of the current artistic production.

Here, they are analysed within appropriation practices which highlight the notions of reproduction, version and quotation. These concepts are critically examined in the light of transformations which result from the massive propagation of the reproduced image, in the context of industrial society’s technological changes and from a historical and socio-political perspective.

Both the appropriation of images and the techniques and concepts related with confiscation reflect the importance that the notion of authorship started having in the works of various artists. An interrelation of strategies, alongside the new role played by photography and appropriation, has allowed an articulation of several art disciplines that resulted in new productions based on multiple supports and technical solutions.

The idea of exploring the paintings under production by means of photography emerged as this work progressed, thus giving the new photographic images autonomy.

Title O RETRATO EXPRESSIVO: Encenação e Suspense

In this pictorial project, entitled “Vultos”, memory is erased in favor of its own ghost, simulating in one way or another the eye that looks at painting. The idea that permeates this research is the attempt to create what we call “pictorial suspense”, which combines the image with the time and the gestures in the painting, translating its conceptual dimension and at the same time the practice of portraiture. Not only the composition but also the sharp chromatic contrasts and obsessive overlap of paint blots, seek to materialize a mysterious and suspicious dimension. These constitute a first questioning of viewers, and eventually function as two sides, which mainly affect the aesthetic experience of these works.

In Isidore Ducasse, human impulses resort to violence as a purpose: the animal in man as a justification for the terror that he inflicts. Splits in history occur when man understands the possibility of violence within his nature, when projecting himself outside human paradigms, freeing himself from a stagnant past. Vertigo is the moment when man unfolds himself to cast his revolutionary being. In vertigo, man contemplates, under his feet, the masks that his past is solely made of; vertigo frees violence as a way of revolution in art, revealing itself as the sublime in revolution. The paintings in Letters to Isidore attempt to recreate Ducasse’s world of darkness, metaphors of an imaginary correspondence.

In grammar, the Portuguese word “Tinta” (paint) is a feminine noun of “Tinto”, deriving from the Latin word “tinctus”, a substance used for dyeing or painting. On the other hand, “Acrylic” is a masculine noun that refers to the acid which forms water-soluble polymers. Acrylic paint is composed of pigments and acrylic medium.

This vehicle has its origin in petroleum-based plastic components. One must note that this paint, as a final product, has a low degree of toxicity, but the production of its vehicle is initially derived from polluting agents and must therefore be manipulated with the right precautions.

This water-based paint was developed in the second half of the 1940’s for industrial purposes. It was intended to be used both in buildings’ interiors and exteriors, and attracted the attention of other markets, particularly the artistic community. In 1955, Liquitex released the first version of this new type of paint and later the Rowney Company1 introduced it in Europe.

Acrylic has been used by artists exploring their

capacity and skills as an alternative to oil painting.

Because it is water based, it has been used in conjunction with several other mediums, generating a plurality of mixed-media techniques. This technique has been relevant to art creation and was responsible for the opening of new paths in painting.

Information about acrylic paint has been gathered, highlighting its features and potential in the art field.

The research in question aims at understanding the materials, tools and technologies used in the execution of a painting.

In my personal artistic practice, which is based on a continuous painting research, experience and knowledge join together in the use of less aggressive materials in terms of toxicity. For personal reasons — such as allergies and sensitivity to oil paint, to its mediums and solvents —, there was a particular interest in the development of this theme.

This document aims at providing clear information and solid knowledge about the use of acrylic paint to anyone who, with or without an artistic education, might need or might look for it.

The introduction of this type of paint allowed for a gradual approach to the medium by its users, permitting a freer painting gesture, in line with the paint’s toxicity, flexibility and drying time.

The research in question blends acquired knowledge and new data, in a thorough study of alternative non-toxic mediums to be used in the daily creation of painted works. The historical context in which acrylic paint emerged, its contemporaneity and technical features, are presented as main themes.

Course divided between two semesters, forming a global unit with the following one (Painting). Both constitute the central axis of the work in MA, providing support for the development of a personal artistic project at postgraduate level. First in a regime of joint seminar with two teachers for presentation and collective discussion, reference is made later to strongly individualized follow up that aims to determine the fundamental operating concepts for each project and monitor procedural, technical, referential and reflective progress.

In line with the previous course (Painting and Project), it proceeds through greater individualized scheme (tutorial) and aims the development of previously structured work, in a flexible perspective of the project and of the gradual increase of the integration of its practical and theoretical strands. A link is intended between critical thinking, aesthetic, sociological, philosophical and contemporary culture: visual arts, opera, theater, cinema, literature.

Under no chronological approach and methodology, one quests for themes that form contemporary time: some determinant thinkers for the aesthetics production (Derrida, Badiou, Said); the concept of vanguard; artistic new geographies and multiculturalism; installation and “total art”; the “society of the spectacle” and the cultural industry; new media and the notion of “evolution in art”: misunderstandings and problems.
