COMPONENT 1

Component One was the beginning of everything — the point where I had to define who I was as a creative practitioner before I even knew the language for it. It felt like stepping into a mirror and trying to understand not just what I make, but why I make it. The brief pushed me to interrogate my influences, my instincts, and the emotional undercurrents that shape my work. I approached it with a mixture of curiosity and discomfort, because self-analysis is never neutral. But that discomfort became productive. It forced me to articulate the themes I kept returning to without realising it: agency, ambiguity, softness, and the refusal to perform for a gaze that feels extractive. Component One became the foundation for everything that followed.

The research stage was where I started to understand myself through the lens of others — designers, theorists, photographers, and artists whose work resonated with the emotional and conceptual territory I naturally gravitate toward. I wasn’t looking for aesthetics to copy; I was looking for frameworks that helped me understand my own impulses. I studied minimalism, coded identity, the politics of the gaze, and the tension between visibility and disappearance. I explored designers like Margiela, Kawakubo, and Lang, not because of their visual signatures alone, but because of their philosophies — their commitment to ambiguity, subversion, and emotional honesty. This research didn’t just inform my work; it clarified my values.

As I developed my personal brand statement, I realised how much of my practice is rooted in emotional truth. I’m drawn to imagery that feels quiet but charged, soft but confrontational, minimal but deeply intentional. Component One gave me the space to articulate that. I wrote about my desire to create work that holds space for vulnerability without spectacle, and about my interest in visual storytelling that resists easy interpretation. I also confronted the tension between commercial clarity and conceptual depth — a tension that would later become central to Components Two and Three. This stage wasn’t about creating a polished identity; it was about acknowledging the complexity of my creative voice.

The visual research and mood board development allowed me to translate my internal landscape into something tangible. I curated images that reflected the emotional textures I’m drawn to: soft lighting, obscured faces, sculptural silhouettes, and gestures that communicate without revealing too much.

I paid attention to colour, texture, and composition, noticing how often I gravitated toward minimal palettes, natural environments, and quiet moments.

This wasn’t about building a trend-driven aesthetic; it was about recognising the visual language that feels authentic to me. The process helped me understand how I see the world — and how I want the world to see my work.

The reflective writing in Component One was where everything clicked. I had to articulate how my influences, values, and visual instincts connect to the kind of practitioner I want to become. I wrote about my commitment to intentionality, my preference for small collaborative teams, and my belief that fashion imagery should carry emotional resonance rather than performative noise. I also acknowledged the challenges I face — particularly the pressure to dilute concepts for commercial appeal or to conform to visual trends that don’t align with my values. This reflection became a declaration of the kind of creative space I want to build for myself.

By the end of Component One, I had a clearer sense of direction than I expected. It didn’t give me a fixed identity — it gave me a framework, a set of principles, and a deeper understanding of my creative instincts.

It taught me how to articulate my values, how to analyse my influences, and how to build a visual language that feels honest. Most importantly, it set the tone for Components Two and Three. The research, reflection, and self-definition from Component One became the backbone of my later work, shaping the way I approach storytelling, production, and conceptual development. It was the starting point of a practice that feels unmistakably mine.
