Under the lights A new addition to Fay this year that has resounded well among the student, teachers, and parents alike is Friday Night Lights. This event was first introduced during the fall season, when it was announced that the whole school was invited to watch the Boy’s Varsity Football Team compete against Fenn, and the Girl’s Varsity Soccer Team compete against Park. Both teams fought hard to the end of their games, the Football team coming away with a win, and the Soccer team only losing by one goal. According to a student who attended, the event was a huge success. Even though it was a very frigid night under the lights, the food truck, and the cheering crowd

made up for it. Friday Night Lights reappeared, during the winter Season, when the school was invited to watch the Girls Varsity Basketball Team play Rectory. This time, instead of being out on the athletic field, it was indoors, where the temperature was much more accommodating, and the acoustics of the gymnasium made the Fay crowds’ cheering echo all around. After seeing how entertaining the first two appearances of Friday Night Lights were, Fay students cannot wait until they get another chance to cheer on their team during the spring Season, when the next Friday Night Lights is expected.

Language in the primary School If not accepting and impressionable, what, then, are young minds? Foreign language education for Fay students begins in Pre-Kindergarten.

In an atmosphere of semi-immersion, they build the basis for a future of polyglotism starting the age of four! Students in the Kindergarten Spanish class learn the days of the week, colors, and food in the language and read bilingual poems and stories. Such targeting at such a young age builds not only natural language skills but increases confidence, and as a Spanish/French helper myself, it is amazing to see the progress they have made since the beginning of the year.

Language teacher, Ms Overstreet, has begun to lead the Kindergarteners into French, as she had for the Pre-K students as well, yet, of course, the kids being as adorable as they are wondered ever-sodeeply about who their teacher might be. We can only hope that the new language will sit well with them and be just as successful!

Pop danthology Every December, holiday-lovers are excited for Christmas, but music-lovers are excited for Pop Danthology! Daniel Kim, Vancouver’s famous <music-lover>, created Pop Danthology.

Pop Danthology consists of numerous songs that mesmerized the hearts of many. It always amazed the viewers since the songs were connected and edited so naturally and professionally. In some parts, different songs are merged together with one song’s vocals and the other’s instrumental music. Surprisingly, they fit together so perfectly! Another reason for Pop Danthology popularity is the interesting video. Daniel Kim mashed up all the music videos so that watching Pop Danthology would also be interesting and enjoyable. The music videos of more than 50 songs switch from one another, which is merged by Daniel Kim masterfully.

Currently, there are 5 versions of Pop Danthology: Pop Danthology 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, and the latest, 2014. Pop Danthology 2014 was released only on December 15th. There are a total of 66 songs mashed up in only about 6 minutes. Pop Danthology is always the issue and trend whenever a year comes to its end. Search ‘Pop Danthology’ on YouTube and see how amazing it is! Next year, I bet you all will be excited for Pop Danthology as well as the holidays.

Starting fresh “Happy New Year!” Although the end of the school year is far away, everyone started making New Year’s resolutions and got more determined to achieve their new goals. Those resolutions included dedicating more time on sports they’re playing, using extra helps wisely, and even getting more sleep!

Fay school, too, has set up few resolutions and strengthening rules for this year.

First, it is dress code: From the start of this term, the dress code got much stricter for all student and faculty. Blazers that aren’t blue or black are strictly forbidden as well as sweaters that are too long, pants that are too tight, or jackets Courtesy of Avery Asherman that might not be appropriate for the weather. Students were to receive an immediate official note if any of these rules were violated. Second would be backpacks. The teachers have agreed on a new rule over the meeting, which says that no students with back pack shall be allowed to attend any class. The rule was made to avoid the congestions in classrooms as well as to encourage the constant use of student lockers.

These rules aren’t anything new to the school, since they’re taking their place in the Fay handbook throughout the time. However, as the New Year came, everyone in school is to keep them.

Past winter of the 8th grade When the 8th graders begun the New Year, they jumped right back into new projects and lessons.

Students decided that they should try to do well before school ran out and it was time to work hard in their classes so that they could have a memorable and restful spring break. The first subject on their mind was Ancient History. Whether it is Mr. Blanchard or Ms. Gifford, students at the utmost tried to accomplish and finish up their assignments in time before they had to leave. Eighth Graders find Ancient History to be the most academically challenging, and they pushed their schedules until their Ancient History homework was complete.

In Physical Science class with Mr. Lane and Mr. McCauley, the 8th graders started a new lesson in chapter four of their textbook; they learned about acceleration. They wrapped up their last unit before the winter break, where they worked on the computer app; Kerbal Space Program, they returned back to classroom from the Mac Lab. Some classes also finished their unit on Position vs. Time graphs and how to read and write them. Before the spring break students in Mr. Lane’s class had a lab that applied our knowledge of acceleration, speed, and estimated error. It was very busy in science class, and the students worked extremely hard!

In the English Classes, students read through a variety of books, such as The Sunflower by Simon Wiesenthal, a famed Nazi hunter. They had to deeply analyze the questions presented in this thoughtful and intriguing novel, and decide for themselves what they would do. The entire plot revolves around the repentance of a dying Nazi soldier, and his pleas for forgiveness from a Jew, and Wiesenthal faced this dilemma himself. After the Sunflower 8th graders also started to think about speeches. The Speech Competition is a long tradition at Fay where every student in the Upper School writes a speech about anything that interests them, and then they read it aloud to their class. Their English teacher will pick two students to move to the semifinals, who will then perform their speech to the other semifinalists in their grade. There, the judges will pick three students from each grade to move on to the finals. In the finals, the contestants read their speech to the entire Upper School, and three judges from outside of Fay picked the winner. Most people find it a very exciting time at Fay! The 8th graders, however, have mixed feelings on the speech contest. Many dreaded the day when they had to read it to their class, while others thought of it as their favorite assignment of the year. Most of the students, however, are somewhere in between. The students were hard at work crafting the perfect speech.

In the many Language classes offered at Fay, they all were getting prepared to perform their unique Holiday songs to the rest of the Upper School. This included a Spanish Christmas Song, and a live Latin performance where the Latin students wore robes and laurel wreaths in their hair to spread their Latin spirit!

In the Math Classes, the Eighth Graders were given access to the green screen in the Innovation Lab, and with the permission of Mr. Fearey and Mrs. Porrazzo, they were allowed to record their line designs, which they drew on graph paper! These designs varied from Christmas trees, to sports, and to family! The students were very innovative and chose difficult designs, but managed to put in the extra effort necessary to complete their projects, which included a report, and a video of their design being graphed in Desmos, an online graphing tool!

Overall, the entire Upper School, not just the Eighth Grade, worked very hard over the winter! They should all be commended for their efforts!

The 7th Grade’s winter During the Mid Winter term, the 7th grade students had to complete several projects and assignments, which kept the students concentrated on their school works and prevented them from losing focus.

The ESL students worked on a poetry project about themselves, using figurative language to express their thoughts and ideas in an abstract way. The poetry project was composed of 7 different parts such as a love sonnet about a thing or a person, a self-discovery poem, a free verse poem, and a poem about themselves growing up. The students not only learned and understood how to use figurative language but also stepped up further by applying it on their own poems to make them more graphic!

In addition to the projects, many of the ESL classes had major assignments for each of the classes. Mr. Beloff and Mr. Macleod both taught American history for the ESL students respectively, focusing on different time frames. In Mr. Beloff’s American History class, the students had to create a presentation for their own given cause and explain how it lead to the Civil War. This assignment helped students learn more about the Civil War and how each of the causes triggered a clash between the North and the South, which lead to the final conflict that united the country into a whole. In Mr. Macleod’s class, the students learned starting from the Pilgrims and the Revolutionary War and took an exam involving all the parts they had learned.

Finally, the mainstream classes, students had an assignment that everyone participated in. In all the English classes, the students had to read “The Giver”, a well-renowned book about a dystopian society where any pain is eliminated by removing the emotions of people. The students worked hard on finding the profound meanings rather than just regarding them as superficial factors and watched a movie based on the book!

Fay student wins award for msla bookmark contest On Wednesday, April 1, Sarah Yoon ‘16 visited the Massachusetts statehouse to represent Fay as one of the winners of the MSLA Bookmark Contest. Her winning design impressed many with a neatly drawn picture of a girl, perhaps even herself, delving into a fictional story. Her Honorary Mention spread quick news to the entire community because it is the first time having a Fay student hold such honor. Not only is Sarah an artist, but she also loves the Fay library. She says, “I usually study in the library during my free periods. Our two excellent librarians help craft a safe, quiet environment! I hope the Fay library continues to amalgamate art into its programs.” Sarah continues to find inspiration in drawing; the theme, “Look what I discovered at my SCHOOL LIBRARY,” demonstrates her pursuit in academic studies as well. Congratulations, Sarah!

Ancient history Political cartoon

This past winter, Mr. Blanchard’s Ancient History worked on many different projects. One that stood out from the rest was the political cartoon project that represented Athenian government. Kayla Terzioglu’16 put her artistic skills to work and made a high-quality cartoon.

The objective of the project was to represent oligarchy, democracy, and Solon, an Athenian legislator, in one cartoon. In Kayla’s, the milk represents an Athenian oligarchical perspective, the cookie represents the democratic perspective, and the ice cream represents Solon.

Students were able to creatively demonstrate their knowledge on Ancient Athenian government. Also, this project prominently stood out compared to other projects due to the creative, informational visuals students made.

Creators Class is a new addition to Fay School. This new class is all about having the creative freedom to make whatever you want. Trying to lead kids onto that path, Creators has challenges along the way to try and teach students how to use the laser cutter, 3D printer, and much more. Creators Class is a great way for students to express their creativity. It not only allows people to create whatever they want, but it has also provided some use. In winter term for Robotics, the Robotics team is using the laser cutter to print their chassis, and a 3D printer to print their 3D wheels. Creators Class is a great new addition to Fay but also inspires a lot for the future. Maybe because of the impact and step that creators has mad it will inspire Fay to offer electives and will use 3D printers for Geometry, or Science and implement into everyday school curriculum.

THE HABIT OF NOW We, as humans are all susceptible to an epidemic that already has control over 20 percent of the worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s population, 90 percent of which is made up of students. This disease probably affects you, and chances are, you know it does, but choose to not do anything about it. It is procrastination.

Procrastination is the practice of doing more pleasurable things in place of more important ones, and thus putting off impending tasks to a later time, sometimes to the "last minute" before a deadline.

Granted there are various tools that help you procrastinate, it is still within your control. Some of these include Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Instagram, television, texting, your computer, and so many other apps and devices. However, most people that partake in this epidemic know that procrastination can end up hurting themselves and eventually studentsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; grades. Plus, I do not know a single person who wants to stay up till 12:00 AM furiously typing up a scientific lab report or a research paper that had been assigned a week ago and is due the next morning.

So, how on earth do we attempt to stop procrastinating? Here are a few helpful tips: 11. Remind yourself that there are tasks that need to be done. Then try to ease yourself into starting to accomplish one task of your choice.

12. Make a to-do list that includes any task

more likely to finish.

1. Eliminate any temptations to do something else.

2. Bargain with yourself to make completing the tasks more rewarding. If you finish the paper now, you can watch a movie later.

3. Focus on the success you will achieve and the joy you will feel, as well as the fact that you will not have to stress about completing the task later.

4. Come up with a consequence that will deter you from avoiding the task, if the thought of getting a bad grade or having a reputation of not getting things done is not enough.

5. Ask someone to help you reach your goals.

10. Make your intentions public. This will add pressure, but for some of us, the reminder of the fact that you are trying to achieve your task from your fellow peers and the adults in your life might be really useful.

I hope that at least one, and maybe more, of these tips turn out to be useful in helping you take control over your procrastination. Good luck!

FAY TRAVELS ABROAD

As New England weather destroyed nearly every living creature of Southborough, Fay’s faculty and students greeted their spring in the warm Mediterranean. In previous years, the language department sponsored trips to France, Spain, and China. From the tasty food to historic sites that give insight, students established unforgettable bonds.

On Monday, March 9, the group loaded their bags from JFK to the Venice Marco Polo Airport of Italy.

Still tired from jet lag, they went to Venice the next day, touring the crowded yet vibrant streets of St. Mark’s Square, the famous Rialto Bridge, and the Lido, a sandbar. The gondola ride and bell tower of the night created unforgettable memories of the floating city. In Florence, they visited the leather factory Misuri where our very own Alex Zhang ‘16, Natalia Valdes ‘15, Mr. Buteau, and Ms. O’Meara, titled Fay’s leather jacket models, produced a fashion show! Even more excited, they danced in a kids’ nightclub called SPACE. Before departing to Sorrento, they visited Pompeii where lied the ruins from Mt. Vesuvius in AD 79. In “actual” Sorrento, they took tarantella dance lessons and made mozzarella! Last, they visited the capital Rome, throwing coins into the Trevi Fountain to wish safe travels back to the US. Throughout the trip, the group not only immersed in culture but also ate delicious pastries and traditional Italian cuisine. Senna Hahn ‘16 commented, “The entire group made new friends, had gelato at least every day, and had the best pizzas of their lives!”

What striked me the most was that the group had done all these in only less than two weeks! Now that they’re back, returning students look forward to another trip next year to Spain.

Kevin Garnett’s Return to Minnesota From 1995, when he was drafted fifth overall, to 2007, Kevin Garnett played with a heart for the Minnesota Timberwolves. 2003 - 04 was the best season for him in terms of scoring and rebounding, averaging 24.2 points and 13.9 rebounds per game. During his time in Minnesota, Garnett was an Olympic Gold Medalist, 2004 Most Valuable Player, 2003 NBA All-Star MVP, three-time All-NBA First Team selection, 2000-2005 All-Defensive First Team, and more. Although he never won a championship for the Minnesota fans, his hard work and achievements would be remembered.

Garnett was traded from the Boston Celtics to the Brooklyn Nets in 2013, and his numbers dropped as his old age certainly caught up. It was nice of both the Nets and Timberwolves as they negotiated a trade to let Garnett retire at the place where he started it all. Kevin Garnett, a future Hall of Famer, has had a fantastic career, and he deserves the respect from all around the NBA.

Prospect Players This year the 2015 IIHF World Junior Ice Hockey tournament was held in Toronto and Montreal Canada. Each year a team is formed consisting of hockey players who are nineteen and younger, each being chosen from across each of the participating countries. Each year is a hard fought battle between the hockey powerhouses of Canada, USA, Sweden, Finland, and a surprising performance from the Russian team. This tournament is to showcase talent from each country for the upcoming 2015 NHL Draft in June, hosted by the Florida Panthers.

This year was one of the most anticipated tournaments because of two players from Team Canada and Team USA. Connor McDavid, the assistant captain for team Canada is the projected first overall pick in the 2015 NHL draft. Wayne Gretzky even says “He is the best player to come into the league in thirty years”, and is said to be the best prospect since Sidney Crosby. The hype that surrounds Connor McDavid is not lie either picking up forty four goals and seventy six assists in a total of forty seven games to reach a total of one hundred and twenty points on the season. His production was also inhibited by his absence due to the World Juniors and him breaking his hand in a fight.

Connor McDavid’s NHL draft position is only rivaled to one Massachusetts native, Jack Eichel, of the Boston University Terriers. Jack Eichel, along with Connor McDavid, had an outstanding year as a freshman at BU. Jack had won every single possible trophy that he was eligible for, including the Hobey Baker award. The Hobey Baker award is to the best player in the NCAA college league, Eichel being only the second freshman to be given this award.

Both will have an outstanding career in the NHL as they have proven their skills in their semiprofessional or college team. Now it is just the question of which team will have the privilege of adding one of these two to their roster in the upcoming 2016 NHL season.

ART INTERVIEW What classes are you teaching currently for the upper school?

Mr. Claire: For Upper School, I am currently teaching Varsity Art, painting, and 3D-1.

Mr. Kimball: I am teaching printmaking, three 3D-1, and two ceramics classes.

Mrs. McGinty: I teach all Upper School ceramic classes.

What are the classes currently working on?

Mr. Claire: Well, the painting classes are finishing up a still life painting of two apple tarts based on a painting

by Monet. When they are done painting, they will get to eat apple tarts too! This is incentive to make the students to finish their paintings. Varsity Art is drawing giant self-portraits, a ton big heads! 3D-1 is making giant sculptures of an everyday item.

Mr. Kimball: We are doing relief print that answers the answer “home is where the _____ is” print what answers the blank space.

Mrs. McGinty: Two different hand building projects a container with element of surprise slab building and mug using patterns.

What are some projects coming up in the following weeks/months?

Mr. Claire: Right now, we’re pretty much focusing on stuff that we are going to do in the spring-term. I do not know what I will be teaching besides Varsity Art yet, but they are going to be doing a printmaking project and then an iconic portrait of someone. If I have a painting class in the spring I think I am going to take them outside to paint. Just throw easels at the back of the SAV’s and go painting!

Mr. Kimball: Etching collagraphs monoprint Mrs. McGinty: They are going to learn how to center opening and grazing in their next with potter’s wheel; noodle bowls are more challenging (teapot: 4 components).

When did you start your career as a printmaker/artist?

Mr. Kimball: I started printmaking when I was in college, 2004.

What materials are you currently working with in your class?

Mr. Claire: Well, for painting classes, we are using acrylic paints, and for Varsity Art, we are using pencils! A lot of pencil drawings. The 3D class is using mostly cardboards, but all kinds of things as well. Anything that works to make their sculptures is durable. Some people are using sheer plastic and variety of other things.

That’s kind of what we’re doing for now.

Mr. Kimball: Right now, we are using battleship linoleum and AUKA ink.

Mrs. McGinty: Just white stoneware that we can glaze. Glazing is different from painting; it melts and gets glossy.

Have you sold your work before? If so, for how much?

Mr. Kimball: Yes, I have sold my prints before, and the prints depend on how much time it took, the size, and usually I give it away for free.

What is your favorite project to teach?

Mr. Kimball: I love printmaking and teaching it to my 7th grade classes and in my elective class.

Are you working on any project on your own? If so what kind/design/color?

Mr. Kimball: I am doing a reductive relief printing because I am going to be applying to the Member of the Boston Printmaker. A process allows you to do multiple colors with a wood block. I didn’t make the Member of the Boston Printmaker, but I will reapply. I need a new body of work as known as theme. It’s kind of nerdy, but I’m building a wearable ATST costume.... It is going to take a long time, but I’m building it just for fun.

When did you start ceramics?

Ms. McGinty: I started ceramics when I was 18. It was my first year of my art school.

What kind of artworks do you make?

Ms. McGinty: My favorite artworks are teapots, jars with lids such as cookie jars, matching mugs, and birdbaths. I also love to paint.
