Faculty Profile: Max Bogaert

H

e has only been here for one year, but Max Bogaert has already contributed to the Fay community in numerous ways.

Max came to Fay last fall and spent the past year teaching kindergarten while also serving as a dorm parent to eighth and ninth grade boys in Steward Dormitory and coaching JV soccer, thirds basketball, and varsity baseball.

Working in independent schools has always seemed like a natural step for Max. A graduate of Clark University with a master’s degree in education from Lesley University, he attended independent schools himself, and he’s eager to create the same supportive and engaging learning environment that he experienced as a student.

Max has thoroughly enjoyed teaching in Fay’s inquiry-based kindergarten program, where the students’ interests inform the program of study and serve as a springboard for building students’ reading, writing, and math skills. “The children especially loved the unit on life cycles and butterflies,” he says.

“It was so exciting watching the children generate questions, make observations, and write about the experience. You can see their critical thinking and problem solving skills in action, and how ready they are for first grade.”

As a dorm parent and coach, Max also enjoys connecting with upper school students outside the classroom. “It’s fun getting to know them in a different context,” he says. “As a coach, you can help them develop skills and confidence.”

You can see their critical thinking and problem solving skills in action, and how ready they are for first grade.” team, which consists of the four classroom teachers, works closely to plan lessons and refine the program so that it meets their students’ needs. “Having two teachers in the classroom is incredible,” he says, noting how much he has learned from teaching partner Katie Zerega over the past year. “Our complementary teaching styles work well together, and everyone benefits from being able to share ideas and experience.”

He has also collaborated with Upper School teachers to bring Fay’s youngest and oldest students together for reading and writing activities. “It’s great to see the kindergartners having so much fun with the older students, and to see the upper school students take on a leadership role,” he says.

“It’s amazing to me how the teachers work together to make a meaningful experience for the students. That’s what’s great about teaching at Fay. It’s never just a job: everyone’s always willing to go the extra mile.”

Be Creative!

In her book, inGenius: A Crash Course on Creativity, Tina Seelig writes, “We are all inventors of our own futures. And creativity is the heart of invention.” This statement neatly connects a recent yearlong Fay School theme, “Building the Future,” with our new theme for 2012-2013: “Be Creative!” Central to both themes is the concept of making a positive difference in the world by imagining possibilities, recognizing opportunities, thinking creatively, and participating actively. A fundamental purpose of Stanford’s design school, where Seelig teaches, is to help students “develop a process for reliably producing creative solutions to nearly any challenge.” Teaching this process of creative problem solving is one of Fay’s most important goals, as well.

Fay’s Primary School, Two Years In: Engaging, Exciting—and Still Growing

Drive through Harlow Circle at morning drop-off, and odds are good that you’ll see Head of Primary School Anne Bishop at the entrance to the Primary School Building, greeting the children as they walk through the door. It’s a welcoming touch that has quickly become a tradition in the two years since the Primary School Building opened in September 2010.

It’s rare that reality meets—or even exceeds—expectations when a large-scale, complex plan is put into action. But that seems to be the case with Fay’s Primary School, which is thriving and continuing to grow as the latest addition to Fay’s program.

the courtyard, where they draw and record their observations of the plants they’re tending in the raised garden beds. In the library, children nestle in cozy armchairs to read, while out on the playground, children scale the ramp of the pirate ship for another adventure of the imagination.

The state-of-the-art, “green” building that first captured the community’s imagination on paper nearly five years ago is now alive with students in Pre-Kindergarten through grade two.

Classrooms buzz with activity. Small groups of students and teachers cluster on the window seats in the wide hallways to read and chat. The sound of singing streams from the music room, while excited shrieks can be heard from the multipurpose room, where P.E. class is in session. Paper and pencils in hand, children move eagerly from the art/science room out to

“I really can’t think of anything,” she says. “The space is just right for the children and the teachers. The building is working beautifully for us—and for the whole school—in ways we could never have imagined.”

FEATURE

ACTIVE LEARNING AND SKILL DEVELOPMENT Student work graces every hallway of the Primary School: poetry, stories, building plans, sculptures, dioramas. The projects speak to the creativity and effort of the students—and the thoughtful ingenuity of the teachers.

“The best feature of our building is how completely it supports the learning process for all our children, from Pre-K through second grade,” Anne says. “It’s a peaceful, happy space that supports active learning.”

And active learning it is, particularly in Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten. Teachers here implement an inquiry-based approach, where they design curricula based on student interests and incorporate purposeful lessons in language arts and math.

For the Pre-K last year, that meant a yearlong unit on pets that included hands-on research and culminated in the adoption of a gecko as a class pet. This year, Pre-K children became woodworking experts through a tool inquiry (see page 7 for more on this), while kindergarten students observed the life cycle of butterflies with a classroom butterfly tent and explored the properties of water with experiments on absorption and buoyancy.

“What looks to the casual eye like a lot of playing in Pre-K and K is actually tremendous skill development,” says Anne. “The children are certainly developing social skills, but there is an amazing amount of literacy and numeracy in everything the children do.”

Harnessing the children’s passions reaps tremendous rewards in terms of the students’ level of interest and commitment, Anne

adds. She sees this engagement first-hand on a regular basis, as she joins the kindergarten teaching team three times a week to conduct small reading groups. There were six groups this year, led by the four kindergarten teachers, Anne, and reading specialist Joan Knox—which meant that the children benefitted from a nearly 5:1 student-teacher ratio for reading instruction. With this format, Anne says, teachers could tailor activities to the children’s needs and select material to spark each group’s interest.

Anne loved incorporating both skills and enrichment when she met with her group. “We did a unit on famous artists,” she explains. “Our librarian, Erin McNally, helped us select books about artists that were leveled appropriately for the children. So while they were developing decoding and comprehension skills, they were also learning about the contributions of artists like Van Gogh and Monet.”

A RICH PROGRAM The academic program, like the building, has also exceeded expectations in terms of its depth and breadth. Art, science, music, physical education, and world languages round out every student’s experience beginning in Pre-K. From the beginning, Fay has taken the innovative approach of integrating art and science in the Primary School. Jennifer Telles teaches art and science to every primary student: her classroom on the first floor is a sunny, spacious lab environment adorned with children’s paintings and sculptures.

“Observational skills are at the root of all artistic and scientific endeavors,” Jennifer says, “so it makes perfect sense to bring the two disciplines together at the primary level.”

Primary children also begin their explorations in world languages with a half-year of instruction each devoted to French and Spanish. Students meet twice each week for music, where music department chair Philip Montgomery uses the Kodály Method, which focuses on giving children opportunities to experience sound and rhythm through folk music and the masterworks.

SEAMLESS TRANSITIONS, THOROUGH PREPARATION Are the children ready to move from the inquiry-based approach in Pre-K and K to a more skills-based approach in grades one and two? Absolutely, Anne says.

“As we started the second year of the Primary School with our first group of kindergarten students entering first grade, we observed that the bar was much higher than it had been in previous years,” says Anne. “The children who completed the Pre-K and K programs in our first year were incredibly capable and confident, ready to dive into reading, writing, and math with an excellent toolbox of skills.”

First and second graders at Fay take part in a program that continues to be active and hands-on, but that takes advantage of the

children’s developmental leaps and increased attention spans to focus on the skills of reading, writing, and mathematics in more depth.

“Our focus in these grades is to make sure children have solid foundational skills in language arts and math,” says Anne.

Anne has collaborated closely with Lower School division head Lainie Schuster to ensure that the move from second to third grade is another seamless transition. “It’s a very deliberate process,” Anne says, “that includes meetings with the second grade teachers, informational meetings for the parents, and multiple visits to the third grade classroom for the second graders, to make sure that students start the next school year feeling confident and well prepared.”

CONTINUING GROWTH One of the best aspects of the Primary School, says Anne, is that the program continues to evolve as teachers develop innovative ways to build students’ skills. “There are so many organic opportunities for collaboration and growth,” she says, citing as an example the Pre-K birdhouse building project (see facing page), which brought together good ideas from teachers and administrators across the divisions.

What does the future hold for the Primary School? Inspired by the birdhouse project, Anne is excited about plans for an “outdoor classroom” that will benefit not only the primary students, but the entire community. And that’s just the start: what Anne knows for sure is that with a strong program in place and the energy and dedication of the faculty, anything is possible.

Fay’s teachers will tell you that one of the best things about working here is the spirit of collaboration and creativity that infuses everything they do.

Case in point: for this year’s Pre-K tool inquiry, the children learned about what tools are and how they work. Children interviewed tool “experts” (including members of our campus facilities staff), designed their own blueprints, and assembled their own creations using woodworking benches, hand tools, and safety goggles.

BUILDING A BIRDHOUSE

It wasn’t long before other teachers got in on the act. Upper School science teacher A.J. Purcell ’77 was having his ninth grade science students build birdhouses for an ecology project, and it made perfect sense to bring Fay’s oldest and youngest students together for a collaborative building project.

That gave Primary School art and science teacher Jennifer Telles a great idea: why not use the birdhouses as a springboard for a mini-unit on the local bird life around Fay? Jennifer helped the children access the website of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology (www.birds.cornell.edu) to learn about the birds found in the region, and she took advantage of the SMARTBoard technology in the science/art room to have children listen to bird calls.

The children used their research to paint watercolors of the birds—and then, armed with expert knowledge and binoculars, they headed out to the fields beyond the Primary Building to do some birdwatching.

“The children knew what to look for,” Jennifer says, “and they were so excited when they saw birds.

Learning about the local wildlife is a great way to take advantage of our natural setting.”

The birdhouses are now being put to good use—they’ve been installed in trees on campus and are serving as excellent accommodations for the robins, bluejays, bluebirds, and cardinals that can be found in the area.

Alumni Update: Americans Abroad he world keeps getting smaller—it’s a cliché that’s actually true, and especially so for our alumni. You can find Fay graduates in almost every corner of the globe, partly as a result of our international student community, but also because so many American alumni have made the choice to pursue professional opportunities outside the United States.

T

What leads people to leave their home countries to find adventure abroad? Is there something about the Fay experience that inspires alumni to think internationally?

Meet three alumni who have taken the leap and embraced a global perspective in their professional lives.

SARAH MILLARD ’89 Senior Director of Marketing, Staples, Inc.; Shanghai, China arah Millard is the senior director of marketing for Staples in China. Based in Shanghai, she’s responsible for managing Staples’ marketing efforts, including customer analysis, creating catalogs, web management, and email campaigns. Sarah was a trailblazer back in 2004, when she petitioned her bosses to head to China just as the company was establishing its roots there.

She was charged with building Staples’ business plan for the region and moved there permanently in 2007.

Sarah estimates that approximately 1% of Staples employees in China are non-Chinese—a stimulating multicultural environment that she truly enjoys. Work conversations are representative of the mix of language and culture that she encounters every day: “A member of my team will say something in Chinese, and I’ll respond in English,” she says, “so there’s often a bilingual conversation going on.”

English notwithstanding, Sarah is a proficient Chinese speaker: until recently, she was taking language classes on a weekly basis.

She also seeks out as many opportunities as she can to make the most of her surroundings: “Shanghai is such a big city with so many things to do, and we also take weekend trips to the smaller villages around the city. It’s a really good work-life balance.”

Sarah “blames” her interest in Asia on her time at Fay: “I was at Fay for seventh, eighth, and ninth grade, and while I was there my three best friends were from Japan, the Philippines, and Netherlands Antilles [now the countries of Aruba, Curacao, and Sint Maarten],” she says. “During the summer after eighth grade, a bunch of us went to Japan for two weeks. That’s what got me interested in taking Japanese at Phillips Exeter, which led me to Wellesley, where they had a good Japanese department.”

“When I got to Staples,” she adds, “I immediately let my manager know that if they did anything in Asia I’d be really upset if they didn’t put me on the team!”

ALUMNI UPDATE

TYLER GODOFF ’03 Energy Logistics Division, Sinotrans; Beijing, China From an early age, Tyler was hungry for Chinese culture— literally. “I first traveled to China when I was 13 years old,” he says. His father asked, “If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?” And because of his passion for the cuisine, he responded, “China.”

Tyler’s enthusiasm blossomed into a love of all things Chinese: while attending Taft for secondary school he spent time studying in China, and while completing his bachelor’s degree at Vanderbilt University he spent a semester studying at Fudan University. Upon returning to Vanderbilt’s campus, Tyler cofounded the Vanderbilt chapter of Global China Connection (GCC), a nonprofit that promotes cooperation between premier students in China and the international community. Tyler now serves GCC as a member of their Board of Trustees.

After graduating from Vanderbilt University in 2010 with a degree in human and organizational development and a minor in corporate strategy, Tyler returned to China to work for the Energy Logistics division of Sinotrans, China's leading stateowned shipping and logistics company. Based in Sinotrans'

Beijing headquarters, Tyler directs international business development efforts and is responsible for establishing and managing relationships with EPCs, oil and gas, and wind energy companies. Tyler has worked on-site for projects in Dubai, Guatemala, Hong Kong, Houston, Kansas, Las Vegas, and Shanghai.

Tyler's experience at Sinotrans has provided an ideal environment for him to immerse himself in Chinese language and culture. He says, “It is a unique experience being a ‘foreigner’ sitting on the Chinese side of the deal.” He enjoys playing the role of a cultural interpreter who ensures that both the Chinese and western sides are on the “same page.”

Like many Fay graduates, Tyler’s time on campus had a clear impact on his later life choices. “During my time at Fay, I learned how to interact and build relationships with people from all over the world,” he says. “The experience equipped me with the curiosity and confidence to pursue opportunities far from home.”

GENIE MAKHLIN ’91 Market Development, Facebook; London, UK or Genie Makhlin, “home” can be found in many cities of the world—Moscow, London, and New York City. Her adventures as a marketing specialist for some of the top names in social media—Facebook, AOL, and Google—have taken her around the world.

Genie is currently head of market development for Facebook, where she focuses on growing markets in countries like Russia.

She has been living and working abroad since 2005, when she moved to London for Google. Shortly thereafter, she departed for Moscow to help establish Google Russia. “I eventually decided that London is best,” she says, and she headed back to the UK when she took on her current role at Facebook.

After spending sixth and seventh grade at Fay, Genie attended The Pingry School in New Jersey and then graduated from Georgetown University, where she double majored in business and Russian. “I moved to Silicon Valley right after college during the Internet boom of 1999 and 2000,” she explains. “My first job was with an Internet start-up called Epinions.com. I loved the Internet and the excitement surrounding this entirely new industry, and I've only worked in the Internet sector since.

It's dynamic and fast-moving, and it changes from day to day.”

Genie, a New York native, loved the international feel of Fay’s Upper School while she was there. “My friends were from all over the world—Mexico, Japan, the Philippines, South Korea,” she says. “This experience opened my eyes to many cultures from an early age.” And in her current life, she continues to enjoy the “small world” moments when they present themselves: “I’ve found out that no matter how large the globe is, the world is very small,” she says. “I always run into friends when I’m wandering the streets of Europe—it’s a very nice feeling.”

Every Word Matters: Poetry Month at Fay It’s been a spring full of poetry in Fay’s Primary and Lower Schools!

In the Primary School, reading specialist Joan Knox worked with speech and language specialist Jill Cordon and librarian Erin McNally to put together a month’s worth of activities that would challenge children at every grade level and spark creativity. The Primary School children gathered at their weekly morning meetings to share their creative work, from nursery rhyme poems in Pre-K and couplets in kindergarten, to first grade’s “What If” poetry and second grade’s similes and calligrams. A Poetry Museum outside the Primary School library also featured samples of the students’ writing.

Lower School students were also immersed in poetry throughout the month, with activities that stretched their observational and analytical skills and that incorporated visual art and performance.

GRADE TWO: CALLIGRAMS Second graders created calligrams—words that are drawn in a way that reflects their meaning. Art teacher Jennifer Telles collaborated with Jill Cordon on this project, where children generated word pairs (such as hot and cold, or happy and sad), wrote similes to describe each word, and illustrated them in creative and colorful ways.

Grade one “What If?” poem

GRADE ONE: IMAGINE THE POSSIBILITIES In first grade, teachers Jill Gibbons, Christine Fearey, Brooke Beebe, and Sharon Longacre incorporated the credo of Columbia University writing specialist Lucy Calkins: “Think like a poet— not like a scientist.” As new readers and writers, first graders practiced using simple poetry structures as a starting point for expressing their original ideas. Children were encouraged to write poetry about everyday objects, but to consider them in new ways and from new perspectives. A highlight of the first grade poetry unit: the students’ “What If?” poetry, where they imagined unusual scenarios and the possible consequences.

Grade two calligrams

GRADE THREE: POETRY SLAM! Third grade teachers Maura Oare and Katie Frazzette presented a Poetry Month challenge to their students: to create a personalized poetry anthology. Over the next few weeks, students assembled their books with poems that fit a range of criteria: happy poems, sad poems, and poems about nature, sports, animals, and seasons, to name a few.

To celebrate the completion of their anthologies, the classes hosted a poetry slam, where the students transformed their rooms into poetry “cafés” and each student memorized and shared one of the poems from his or her anthology.

Throughout the unit, third graders explored a number of poetry terms—metaphor, simile, alliteration, personification—which they also incorporated in their anthology introductions.

Grade five haiku

GRADE FIVE: INSPIRED BY ART Fifth grade poetry this spring included a mini-course in art history and appreciation. Students wrote ecphrastic poetry— poetry inspired by art—using some of the art world’s “greatest hits” as inspiration. Teacher Devan FitzPatrick challenged students to write about what they saw from a variety of perspectives, using works such as Winslow Homer’s Snap the Whip, Rockwell’s Girl Eating Corn, Matisse’s Woman with a Hat, and Munch’s The Scream.

“With both poetry and art, you’re capturing a moment, a feeling, an emotion,” she adds. “I’m hopeful that these activities gave the students more tools for expressing themselves creatively—as well as a new way to look at and think about art.”

A Closer Look: Grade Six Moves to Lower School Big changes are afoot in the Root Building: this fall, grade six joins grades three, four, and five to become the highest grade in Fay’s Lower School. For the past year, Head of Lower School Lainie Schuster has worked closely with faculty and administrators to ensure a smooth transition and introduce some exciting enhancements to the sixth grade program.

INCREASED INSTRUCTION TIME IN LANGUAGE ARTS Fay’s sixth graders will now have separate instructional times for reading and English, effectively doubling the amount of time students spend on language arts each day. “Our sixth grade language arts program will be developmentally appropriate and challenging,” Lainie says. “Students will focus on analyzing literature, exploring a range of literary genres, and developing a clear and expressive writer’s voice.”

Lainie is particularly excited about the robust classroom libraries that Lower School teacher Dava Dunne has prepared for the fall: “Research shows that classroom libraries are a powerful motivator for continued independent reading—and stronger comprehension—in adolescence,” Lainie notes. “We’ll continue to focus on making time for students to read for pleasure: students who do well on standardized tests are voracious readers with rich vocabularies.”

NEW ADDITIONS TO THE LOWER SCHOOL FACULTY Fay’s Lower School is welcoming some “new-old” faces to the faculty—teachers who are making the transition from Fay’s Upper School to the Lower School. Kara Mertz will teach fifth and sixth grade Spanish; Andy Long will teach sixth grade science; history department chair Bruce Chauncey will teach sixth grade social studies; and math department chair Julie Porrazzo will teach sixth grade math. “With their years in Upper School, these teachers will bring a first-hand understanding of what our sixth graders need in order to be prepared for the coming year,” Lainie says.

The addition of the sixth grade to the Lower School also makes it possible for teachers to work collaboratively in “clusters.” Teachers in grades three and four will work together to ensure continuity of curriculum, as will teachers in grades five and six.

“HOME-VISORIES” Fifth grade math teacher Tyler Auer gets the credit for this new piece of Fay terminology: the word refers to the new homeroom/advisory period that will take place for about 20 minutes at the beginning and end of every school day. Fifth and sixth graders will meet with teachers in small, mixed-age, mixed-gender groups for regular daily check-ins, to talk about what’s going on in the school day. “The mixed-age groupings are an effective way for us to build a collaborative community spirit within our division,” Lainie notes. Students in grades three and four will continue to meet in homerooms.

A DEVELOPMENTALLY APPROPRIATE ATHLETIC PROGRAM

Director of Athletics Rob Feingold has been working with Lainie to develop an athletic program specifically for Fay’s fifth and sixth graders. The new program will have three components: instruction, intramural games, and interscholastic competition. “Students will choose a sport each term,” Rob explains. “During each week, the bulk of practices will focus on instruction and intramural play. Throughout the season there will be interscholastic competition once a week, or once every two weeks, against well-matched opponents from our peer schools.” Exceptional sixth grade athletes will, with permission, have the opportunity to try out for Fay’s varsity teams.

A FOCUS ON READINESS Lainie believes these enhancements will serve to help students make a seamless transition to Upper School in seventh grade.

“Everything we’re doing is designed to get them ready for the challenges of Upper School, academically as well as developmentally,” she says. Innocent Until Proven Guilty: A Mock Trial for To Kill a Mockingbird

One man’s fate is in their hands.

hat man is Tom Robinson, the fictional character from Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird. The jurors, attorneys, assistants, and bailiffs are all members of Corie Fogg’s eighth grade honors English class. They’re participating in a “dynamic assessment”—a mock trial—to culminate their reading of the novel and to experience firsthand the strengths and challenges of the American legal system.

“The impetus behind this project was to expand the students’ study of the novel and enrich their reading experience,” Corie explains. “I also wanted students to participate in an activity that would help them consider issues of social justice, engaged citizenship, and the realm of human responsibility.”

One of the most eye-opening parts of the trial process was when we learned the impact of the evidence and testimony on the jurors’ decisions. Even Judge Cunningham noted that he had never heard a jury deliberate before.

Preparations for the mock trial were months in the making.

Students were first divided into teams of public defense attorneys, state prosecutors, jurors, and assistants and bailiffs, and then they took time to learn about each individual’s role in the courtroom.

The eighth graders welcomed experts to the classroom to share their experience and knowledge about the law. Tom McKean, chair of Fay’s Board of Trustees, spoke with the group about his work as a prosecuting attorney, public defender, and bar advocate. Students also welcomed the Honorable Kevan J. Cunningham, presiding judge of the Taunton District Court, who discussed how teams of attorneys should prepare for the trial, the finer points of reasonable doubt, and the complexities of a fair trial. Eager and earnest, students peppered both guests with questions.

CLASSROOM UPDATE

As the trial date approached, the teams created subpoenas for witnesses and jury duty forms for faculty jurors. They prepared arguments and evidence, wrote cross-examination questions, and practiced closing statements.

Trial day was Friday, May 18. The Upjohn Building was transformed into the Maycomb County Courthouse, with Judge Cunningham presiding. To enhance the authenticity of the trial, Corie called upon faculty members and students to act as witnesses. Several characters from the novel gave their testimonies, including Mayella Ewell (played by faculty member Katie Long), Bob Ewell (faculty member Will Reid) and Tom Robinson (faculty member Dan Roy), with their evidence based in the context clues provided by the novel.

While the goal of the project was to achieve a nearly exact replica of a real court case, there was one major difference: the jury, composed of students and faculty members, deliberated in public, so their questions, concerns, and considerations could be heard by the attorneys, the judge, and the spectators. “This was one of the most eye-opening parts of the trial process,” Corie says, “as we learned the impact of the evidence and testimony on the jurors’ decisions. Even Judge Cunningham noted that he had never heard a jury deliberate before.”

The verdict? Interestingly, it was a hung jury—primarily, Corie notes, as a result of the students’ and teachers’ insightful observations about history, bias, sexism, and cultural difference.

“The group had a very serious, deliberate, and wide-ranging discussion about the notions of justice and fairness,” Corie says. “John

Beloff ’88 (a faculty member who served on the jury) helped the other jurors to focus on the ideas of reasonable doubt and proof. It was a wonderful conversation to observe.”

Corie says that the mock trial exceeded her expectations for helping her students achieve a genuine view of the legal system, noting that students appeared to be most struck by just how challenging it is for anyone to receive a fair trial, given how personal experience and bias inform every individual’s decisions and actions.

“I felt lucky as a teacher to have such a thoughtful and committed group of students,” she adds. “This class amazed me as they prepared for the trial with such thorough attention to detail; they memorized compelling arguments and learned how to stand on their feet and present cogent ideas with clarity; and they engaged one another in moral and intellectual discussions about justice, biases, and human nature. I’m hopeful that they came away with a more thorough understanding of the rights and responsibilities of citizens in a just society.”

Where Do We Go From Here?

The Secondary School Placement Process at Fay

If you have a child in Fay’s Upper School, it’s likely that you’re already thinking about secondary school options. If you have children in the Primary or Lower School, those decisions may seem impossibly far in the future—though they’ll sneak up on you faster than you might think.

Regardless of where you are on the timeline, it’s helpful to know about the essential role that our secondary school placement team plays in helping Fay students move on to excellent secondary schools around the country.

With this goal in mind, here’s your primer on how Fay’s secondary school placement process works.

MEET THE TEAM Director of Secondary School Placement Stu Rosenwald works with all ninth grade day students and domestic boarders. Assistant Director of Secondary School Placement Scott LeBrun is the placement counselor for all eighth and ninth grade international students, while Kate Pingeon works with all domestic families of eighth graders who choose to apply out for ninth grade. “Our studentcounselor ratio is extremely low compared to many schools, and this is a huge strength,” Stu notes. “Each of us only works with about 30 students each year, which means we’re able to provide a high level of personal attention.”

SPRING: STARTING THE PROCESS

FALL: PREPARATIONS AND APPLICATIONS

In late April, the placement team hosts an introductory seminar for all Fay parents, Pre-K through eighth grade. “All parents are welcome to attend,” says Stu. “The goal is to help parents start familiarizing themselves with the process.”

Throughout the fall, Fay’s placement counselors focus on preparation. Fay arranges for an optional weekend SSAT preparation class to take place on campus, and students get ready for in-person interviews with a process that includes a mock interview with their Fay placement counselor. Placement counselors also coordinate the teacher recommendations to make sure that they do the best possible job of showcasing each student’s strengths.

Shortly thereafter, each ninth grade family meets with Stu or Scott to discuss the student’s strengths and the family’s criteria for secondary school. “Based on what we know about the student and our experience with the schools, we offer the parents a preliminary list of schools to consider,” Stu says.

“This gives families the opportunity to conduct their own research during the summer.” While Stu meets in person with day students and families of domestic boarders, Scott also works with international families via email, phone, and Skype.

For families who choose to leave Fay after eighth grade, they may contact Kate Pingeon, the eighth grade placement counselor, in the spring of seventh grade. These families also explore options and generate a preliminary list of schools to consider.

SUMMER: RESEARCH Summer is the time for families to do their research, as they may make informal visits to campuses and examine websites to learn about schools. The goal is to narrow down the list to a manageable number, Stu says, and for parents to set up interview appointments for the fall. “We continue to be available throughout the summer to offer feedback and support to families as they go through the initial decision making process,” Stu says.

While students and their families are required to complete the applications, the counselors are on hand to provide guidance.

“We’re always there to help when the need arises,” says Stu.

WINTER: ADVOCACY One of the most important roles that Fay counselors play is as an advocate for their students with each secondary school.

“Before the schools decide what they’re going to do,” Stu explains, “we meet in person or over the phone with every single admission office to discuss every single Fay candidate. We’re there to help shine a light on each student’s strengths and provide context when questions come up.”

Here’s where Fay’s excellent track record with secondary school placement becomes such a benefit to all Fay students. “After so many years, the admission offices at the secondary schools trust us,” Stu says. “They know the Fay program well and have a great deal of positive experience with Fay alumni who have attended their schools over the years. Our students have a reputation for being well rounded and well prepared.”

SPRING: DECISIONS Come spring, applicants receive their letters from the schools, and it’s time to make a final decision. Again, placement counselors are on hand to offer feedback to families who would like additional guidance.

Through it all, Stu Rosenwald and his team stay focused on the most important goal: “We want to help all our students make the best match for their skills, interests, and temperaments—to find schools where they can thrive academically while also pursuing their passions.”

Big Questions, Real World Answers: How Enrico Fermi Helped Fifth Graders “Nip the Napkin Nonsense”

If we lined up all the Lower School students from head to toe, how long would the line be?

How many tiles cover the floors of the Root Building classrooms?

How many gallons of Jell-o™ would it take to fill Mrs. Schuster’s office?

Fifth graders have a lot of questions, and their relentless curiosity can be entertaining—and exhausting! This spring, we harnessed their inquisitive spirit with a project that explored the art of asking good questions. The students integrated their studies in Tyler Auer’s math class and Cecilia Owens’ science class as they came up with a “green” solution for an everyday problem at Fay. Our project began by introducing students to the work of Enrico Fermi, the Nobel Prize-winning physicist who worked on the Manhattan Project and helped the United States develop the first nuclear reactor in 1942. While Fermi is Silicone pot holders, cloth pot holders, or oven mitts? Fifth graders Mary Flathers, Laura Drepanos, and Tess Papagni test the efficiency of each possible solution.

famous for his work in theoretical and experimental physics, his greatest legacy might be his solution to a seemingly insignificant problem: How many piano tuners are there in the city of Chicago? Problems like this are now known as “Fermi problems” or “Fermi estimates” because of the physicist’s incredible ability to accurately estimate answers to “big questions.”

Fay’s fifth graders tackle many Fermi problems throughout the year. Designing bridges with limited resources or estimating how many shingles are on the northern roof of the Primary School building (35,296, by the way) encourages students to examine real-world problems where there is no clear or exact solution.

On Earth Day, the students applied Fermi’s approach to problem solving to help reduce napkin waste in the Dining Room.

As part of the dining program, Fay students clear and set the tables. This involves carrying plates from the kitchen—plates that are often quite hot from being recently washed. The students use napkins as insulators to help transport the hot plates from the kitchen to the tables.

To help the Lower School understand how many napkins were being wasted, fifth graders Mary Flathers, Laura Drepanos, and Tess Papagni estimated the number of napkins used (just for carrying plates) in the Lower School over the course of a whole school year. Based on 14 lunch tables, an average of four napkins per table per lunch, and 164 lunches over the course of the year, they estimated a total of 9,184 napkins wasted each year.

The students narrowed the options to three finalists, which they tested at lunch: oven mitts, cloth pot holders, and silicone pot holders. As they shared their observations, the students agreed that all three worked well as insulators, with some reservations. When the plates were wet, the silicone potholders had no friction, and students also expressed concern that the oven mitts would be difficult to keep clean. The conclusion: cloth potholders would work the best.

The fifth graders then shared this information with the entire Lower School community at lunch. Faculty and students were amazed to see the results and immediately began exploring solutions.

In place of the napkins, students needed something that would be easy to keep clean, reusable, and “sticky” enough to grip the plates and reduce the chance of slipping and breaking.

From there, the fifth grade students researched prices and options for purchasing the cloth pot holders. With this information in hand, the students composed a letter proposing their solution to Director of Dining Services Dean Lewis and Director of Finance and Operations Alan Clarance. The exciting result of the students’ research and calculations: there is now a plan in place to begin the

2012-13 school year with the cloth pot holders for students to use at lunchtime.

Our Earth Day project brought to life not just the links between math and science—but the fact that theoretical explorations can result in concrete, realworld changes that make the world a better place. We look forward to exploring more “big questions”—and smart solutions!—with our students.

Marcus D’Angelo ’18 Joins National Tour of Les Misérables Third grader Marcus D’Angelo is on the ultimate field trip. As part of the national tour of the 25th anniversary production of Les Misérables, he is spending the next few months performing in cities across the midwestern, western, and southern United States.

Marcus plays Gavroche in the production—the young brother of Eponine who is left to fend for himself and lives by his wits in the streets of Paris. Marcus, like the other four children in the show, is double-cast in the role: “We’re each other’s understudies,” he explains.

It’s been an exciting—and surprisingly quick—trip to the national stage for Marcus. “We never thought this would happen,” says Marcus’ mother, Carrie D’Angelo. “It found him—he didn’t find it.”

Like many kids who love music and the theater, Marcus attended theater camps and got involved in community theater projects. Last year, a talent manager saw a video of a local production that

included Marcus. One thing led to another, and before he knew it, Marcus was up for the part in Les Misérables. Fay music teacher Stephen Buck helped him prepare for the callback. “My first audition was nervewracking, but I was so excited when I found out I had gotten the part,” Marcus says.

Earlier this spring, Marcus hit the road, accompanied by his mom. They spend about one week in each city, which gives them enough time to do a little exploring and experience the local culture. Marcus doesn’t have too much time for sightseeing, though: he spends 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. with his tutor on schoolwork, comes home for a short break, returns to the theater in time for the 7:00 p.m. show, and is back to the hotel by midnight to get to sleep and start all over again the next day.

Marcus’ teachers at Fay have been collaborating with the production tutor to keep Marcus on track academically, and, Carrie reports, “The tutor says that Fay has been one of the best schools she’s worked with, and she has been very impressed with what Marcus is learning.” Marcus has also been checking in regularly with his Fay classmates via Skype. When he returns from his travels, we’ll all be eager to hear more about his adventure of a lifetime.

Amy Tournas ’12 Joins Fay’s Boys Varsity Baseball Team Sports are Amy Tournas’ passion, and her roster of athletic commitments for this year alone—two soccer teams, two hockey teams, and ski racing, to name a few—is enough to make anyone feel tired.

Her skill, drive, and sportsmanship on the field and on the rink have earned her the captainship of Fay’s girls hockey team and MVP awards for hockey and soccer. She also received the Michael Shay ’74 Memorial Trophy, given each year to a Fay hockey player who demonstrates a love of the sport and exhibits earnest effort on and off the ice. At Prize Day this year, she received the Award for Excellence in Girls’ Athletics.

This spring, Amy took on a new challenge as a member of Fay’s boys varsity baseball team. The only girl playing baseball at Fay or among our peer schools, she played outfield and second base, and she was an integral part of the team’s success. Before she heads off to Brooks School this fall, we asked her about playing baseball and what she loves so much about sports.

What led you to decide to play on a boys’ baseball team?

Most of the kids in my neighborhood were boys, and we were never inside: we’d always play sports, especially baseball. I thought, if I can hit and catch and run like they can, why can’t I play with them on a team? I played baseball from third to sixth grade; I ran track in seventh and eighth grade but realized how much I missed baseball. When I picked it up again this spring, it was a little intimidating: the field is bigger, the rules have changed, and the kids are bigger and throw the ball harder.

How has your performance this season compared to your expectations?

I didn’t have many expectations! I just decided I would go out there and do my best, and that’s what I try to do every day. Whatever the outcome, I try to improve for the next time.

What are your greatest strengths as a baseball player?

I have a good batting eye, and I get on base. I lead the team in walks. I walk at least once a game, and the one time I struck out, the pitcher threw me a curveball.

What would you tell another girl who wants to play a boys’ sport?

Nothing’s only for boys! When I was younger, I thought teams were teams and teammates were teammates. Do it if you want to do it. You won’t get made fun of— instead, you’ll get people saying, “Wow, I wish I did that!” And that will only drive you to be better. Now, I just want to improve. I want to be able to hit with more power, have a better swing, and be able to make those diving catches.

What has athletics given you?

Really muscular legs! I’m really proud of them—they show who I am and what I’ve worked for.

Our Adventures Overseas: Fay Students Travel to Italy and Greece his past March, 22 Fay students, three chaperones, and the Gustavson family headed overseas for a nine-day trip to Italy and Greece. The whirlwind trip was packed full of adventure, with visits to Athens and Delphi, a ferry to Sorrento, a tour of Pompeii, and excursions to Rome, Florence, and the Vatican City.

Trip leaders Alina Argueta, Emily Gifford, and Stephen Buck were delighted with the energy and enthusiasm of the students, as well as their high level of preparedness. “The students’ entire education at Fay helps them to truly appreciate a trip like this,” says Alina, noting that from world language instruction, to Ancient History with Dan Blanchard— even to their practice of sit-down dining in Fay’s Dining Room—the students were equipped with the experience and knowledge to make the most of the experience.

I loved going to see the immense Coliseum in the center of Rome. It was very cool observing a place where, long ago, gladiators fought for their lives, had epic battles, and the crowd roared with excitement.

This trip will stay with me for the rest of my life.

I looked to my left and was awestruck by the Acropolis, standing tall and proud. Out of every place we visited, from museums to ancient grounds, these ten minutes staring out on the country where my ancestors lived truly made this experience worthwhile.

I enjoyed Pompeii because I found it incredible that an entire city and its people could be frozen in time by a layer of volcanic ash.

It was interesting to see the city with the paintings on the walls, the political propaganda, the houses, and the ancient graffiti. It was especially intriguing to walk through one of the mansions and see all of the detail put into making it.

Sports Spotlight It was another exciting season for Fay athletics, with impressive effort and a strong performance from every team.

For the spring season, Fay students in grades five through nine chose from a range of athletic options, including lacrosse, baseball, softball, track and field, tennis, and fitness and games.

Fay’s track and field team took home numerous ribbons at the Junior School Track Jamboree, with the girls’ team placing second overall for the day. Eyoung Kwon ’12 and Josiah McFarlane ’13 competed as Fay’s first-ever pentathletes, and Eyoung won the competition. Fay’s girls swept the 200-meter sprint, with Yana Serry ’13, Jennifer Han ’12, and Kolbi Bradley ’13 winning first, second, and third place respectively. Eyoung, Yana, Jennifer, and Kolbi also took first place in the 4x100-meter relay. Other noteworthy achievements included a second place finish for Yana in the girls 100-meter sprint; third place for Julia Harvey ’13 in the 800-meter run; second place in the long jump for Tiquan Ewell ’13; and for Carrie Moore ’14, a third place in the long jump and second place in the 400-meter run.

Girls varsity lacrosse continued to build their already strong program, finishing with a record of 6-3-1. And boys varsity lacrosse celebrated their best season in three years—after finishing under .500 for the past two seasons, they finished this season with a 6-6 record. At the New England Junior School Lacrosse Tournament, the boys lacrosse team beat Shore Country Day with a last-second goal

In the second round, Fay beat Shore Country Day to take third place in the tournament.

Boys tennis finished with an 8-2 record, while girls tennis finished with a record of 3-4-1. At the New England Junior School Tennis Tournament, Robert Mulholland ’12, David Wu ’12, and Seth Gluzman ’13 all put in strong performances. Robert won his first round match and lost in the second round; David Wu lost in a tiebreaker in his first match; and Seth lost his first match but won an impressive match in the consolation round.

Director of Athletics Rob Feingold was impressed by what he saw this spring.

“This season is representative of the high level of competitiveness across the whole program,” he says. “Every player had an opportunity to focus on skill development, and each team found success in competition. Our strongest players had an opportunity to compete at a high level, while those newer to the sport had opportunities to build their skills and confidence.”

Fay Welcomes New Trustees Fay is delighted to welcome five new members to the Board of Trustees. As past and current parents, alumni, and friends of Fay, they bring an impressive breadth of experience and wisdom, and we are grateful for their dedication and commitment to our school’s future.

CYNTHIA CONIGLIARO, P ’20, ’23 Southborough, MA Cynthia is a graduate of the College of the Holy Cross, where she majored in psychology and Spanish. She also completed a dual master’s program at Boston College and earned an MBA and MSW, focusing on marketing and non-profit management. She has held numerous marketing and sales positions at companies such as Harvard Pilgrim and Jenny Craig Weight Loss Centers in the past; currently, she is managing public relations for her husband’s firm, Conigliaro Industries, and raising children Ava, (entering grade two), and Luca (entering Pre-K). Cynthia has used her marketing expertise to Fay’s great benefit by volunteering her time to help advise on admission marketing strategy and serving on Fay’s Strategic Planning and Cultural Arts Committees.

ANN-ELIZABETH “AE” RUEPPEL, P ’13, ’15, ’20 Dover, MA AE graduated as a double major with degrees in comparative literature and Spanish from the University of California, Irvine before working in the advertising and digital media industry in Los Angeles, New York, and San Francisco. Her most recent positions include Account Director at Viacom/Showtime Networks, Inc. in NYC, and Senior Director of Programming for Pacific Telesis' new media ventures in San Francisco. With children currently in the Primary and Lower Schools (Elizabeth ’15 and Elise ’20), and one who has gone through Fay’s Upper School (Meryl ’13, now at Noble and Greenough), AE has broad experience at Fay. She served as president of the Parents'

Association from 20102011, executive vice president from 2009-2010, vice president of Student Services from 2007-2009, and member of the Cultural Arts Committee from 2006-2007.

Additionally, she serves as a volunteer for Fay's Annual Fund. She also volunteers at Noble and Greenough School, Perkins School for the Blind, Girl Scouts of America, the National Charity League, and Children's Hospital League of Boston.

ROBERT SCUMACI, P ’12, ’15, ’17 Hopkinton, MA Bob is an alumnus of Fordham University. Until 2010, he served as Executive Vice President and CFO of Sepracor Pharmaceuticals, now called Sunovian Pharmaceuticals; he also served as Special Assistant to the Chairman of Sepracor to oversee the integration with Sepracor’s acquirer, Dainippon Sumitomo Pharma Co., Ltd. Bob is currently the owner of Scumaci Properties, which rehabilitates homes for sale to low-income military veterans. Bob and his wife, Jennifer, have been parents at Fay since 2006, with children Jake ’12, Louis ’15, and Angela ’17 attending.

Bob and Jennifer have been actively involved as parents at Fay, and Bob has served on Friends of Fay.

RAE-EUN SUNG ’94 Seoul, Korea After graduating from Fay in 1994, Rae Eun attended Choate Rosemary Hall for secondary school and then graduated from Stanford University. Now based in Seoul, Korea, she is a working mother of two young children and Director of Corporate Social Responsibility for Youngone Corportion. She also serves on the board of both Youngone Corporation and Youngone Holdings.

Youngone is one of the leading manufacturers and retailers of outdoor apparel, equipment and accessories for well-known international brands like The North Face, L.L. Bean and Patagonia. Rae Eun has been a steady and loyal supporter of Fay, and she took an active role in organizing the Seoul Asia Alumni Summit in 2007. She is a member of the Alumni Council and has regularly traveled from Korea to attend Fay events and Alumni Council meetings.

BRIAN LIGHT P’10, ’12, ’15 Sudbury, MA Born and raised in California, Brian received his undergraduate degree from the University of California at Irvine. He is Executive Vice President of Staples’ Services Group, with global responsibility for human resources, information technology, and shared services.

He also leads the “OneStaples” initiative, focused on improving the customer experience for those shopping across Staples’ retail, e-commerce, mobile, and catalog channels worldwide. Brian and his wife, Rhonda, have three children: Connor ’10 (currently at Phillips Andover); Royce ’12 (currently at St. Mark’s); and Avery ’15.

April 12 brought together the Friends of Fay, our school’s 60-member board of visitors, for their half-day annual meeting. Throughout the school year, members of Friends of Fay participated in a series of roundtable discussions on technology and education, facilitated by Director of Information Technology Peter Fearey. The annual meeting provided a chance for members to visit classrooms, hear a division heads’ presentation on the continuity of curriculum across all Fay grades, and attend a mini-class showcasing many of the ways technology is integrated in our Upper School. The meeting closed with a presentation

by Rob Gustavson on Fay’s strategic priorities. “We hope to cultivate in Friends of Fay a community of people whose expertise and life experience can help move Fay forward in the coming years,” says Director of Advancement Marie Beam. “We’re grateful for the time they spend with us and for the wisdom and goodwill they bring to the School.”

Fay Celebrates its 146th Commencement On June 9, forty-nine members of the Class of 2012 took home diplomas at Fay’s 146th Commencement Exercises.

Fay welcomed Andy Locsin ’77, P ’12 as this year’s Commencement speaker. Andy was the first student to attend Fay from the Philippines and Asia, and while a student here, he served as president of the Reds and was the 1977 Founders' Medal recipient. He is a graduate of Phillips Exeter Academy, Wesleyan College, and Harvard University. Andy now leads the architectural company started by his father, L.V. Locsin and Partners, in Manila. He is also a founder of The Beacon School, an independent school in Manila modeled in part on Fay and Philips Exeter.

Class president Jessica Fan also celebrated Commencement as a beginning rather than an ending. In her remarks, she announced that the Class of 2012 was presenting to Fay nine bicycles as their class gift. The bicycles, she noted, were in part a tribute to faculty member Dick Upjohn, who passed away earlier this year, as well as a way for the Class of 2012 to share their spirit of fun and adventure with the next group of Upper School students.

“Our close-knit community demonstrates, friendship, support, and positivity,” she said.

“We wish to leave behind our experiences and the lessons we learned so the Class of 2013 can enjoy as much of their ninth grade year as we did.”

Great Results for Fay Students in the Secondary School Placement Process

In a challenging secondary school admission environment, Fay students fared extremely well. Even in the face of increased competition for admission to the top secondary schools, as well as for financial aid, Fay applicants succeeded. Many of our students gained admission to the most selective independent schools in America, almost all had several options from which to choose, and all ninth grade appli-

cants who needed financial aid received an award at two or more secondary schools. Perhaps the ultimate accomplishment is that our students are matriculating at schools that are excellent matches for them—schools where they will be challenged academically, and yet with hard work, can achieve great success in the classroom. And choosing the right academic fit allows our students to continue to

Fay Recognized for Troop Outreach At this year’s Prize Day, Debbie Depp Wilson P ’99,’01 recognized Fay School with a special thank you gift on behalf of Care Packages for Troops, an organization that packages and ships donations and letters of encouragement to troops serving overseas. The gift, a polished black shadow box, contains a ceremonial flag that was flown in honor of Fay over an Army base in Afghanistan, a certificate of authentication, several mementos of Operation Enduring Freedom, and a plaque recognizing Fay for its contributions. “The enthusiasm of Fay students when they come is infectious,” remarked Ms. Wilson. “Whether it’s filling care packages, writing a personal note to a serviceman or woman, putting postage on the boxes, or loading the post office trucks, they do it with gusto and a real spirit of community. he rain cleared up just in time for Founders’ Weekend 2012 and the Color Competition. Reds and Whites from Pre-K through ninth grade gave their all, from obstacle courses, to sack races, to the traditional tug-of-war—with the Reds winning by a small margin of 617-593, on the heels of great performance by the Lower School Reds.

Founders’ Weekend 2012:

Remembering and Reconnecting

N

early 150 alumni made their way back to Fay on May 5 for Founders’ Weekend celebrations, as old friends got together to reminisce and catch up.

There were a number of special events to mark the day, which also included the traditional Founders’ Dinner and dinner for young alumni. Members of the classes of 1977 and 1978 gathered to remember Bryant Wick ’77 with a luncheon where friends and family shared stories and memories. A bench carved with Bryant’s name was dedicated at the luncheon and installed in its permanent spot outside Steward Dormitory, for the enjoyment of future Fay students and visitors.

Alumni, friends, and family also gathered at a ceremony to remember longtime Fay teacher Richard D. “Dick” Upjohn and former staff member (and “sewing room lady”) Barbara Dumont, both of whom passed away this year. Head of School Rob Gustavson, faculty member Andy Long, and former staff member Cathy Logan spoke about Mr. Upjohn and Mrs. Dumont and the impact they had on students and colleagues at Fay.

CLASS NOTES 1936 FAIR GOODALE tells us that all is well, and that he’s working on a sequel to his memoir The Absolute Truth and Other Uncertainties. He adds, “My novel The Tentative Assassin would be better as a movie than as a novel.”

1941 KENNON JAYNE has this news: “At age 86, my biggest achievement is that I'm still around—probably due to the healthy lifestyle and discipline from the likes of Mr. Brackett and Mr. Fay himself during those long ago days! I believe Dean Boylan is still around but was sad to hear that Larry Dalley, our class president, has passed. Three cousins were with me at Fay: Loyall Edge and Sewall Williams, both gone now, and Sewall's brother, ARTHUR WILLIAMS, in Stowe, VT, who is hanging in there—

and we talk frequently. My other news is that Stephen Gray came to visit me this April—a very worthwhile visit. He brought back memories of Fay and the positive impact I now realize Fay had on me! Fay School is certainly strengthening its alumni relations with this visitation program!”

1945 We heard from PAUL HERTELENDY this spring—he recently helped to recruit the selection committee responsible for choosing the 20th-century poets commemorated in a new series of stamps issued by the U.S. Postal Service this past April. Paul has a Ph.D. from the University of California and is an arts writer living on the west coast who has written for the Oakland Tribune and San Jose Mercury News, in addition to publishing eight poetry books. His

work appears on the web at sites like www.artsSF.com and www.TheColumnists.com. “The USPS has honored individual poets like Langston Hughes, Carl Sandburg, Robert Frost and Edna St. Vincent Millay in the past, but never in a multiple set,” he writes. “The widely representative group of great and near-great honorees that they selected included one Nobel Prize winner, Joseph Brodsky, as well as Wallace Stevens, William Carlos Williams, Sylvia Plath, Robert Hayden, Theodore Roethke, Gwendolyn Brooks, Denise Levertov and E.E. Cummings—or, if you prefer, e.e. cummings, following the lower-case form of many of his poems…The issuance of the stamps will help give American poetry—too often neglected, too often shunted aside—a unique shot in the arm, at both the reading and the creating ends.”

1955 JOHN ANGIER is currently senior vice president with Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage in Cambridge, Massachusetts; he reports that this is his seventh year riding the Pan Mass Challenge, an annual bike-a-thon that raises money for the Dana Farber Cancer Institute.

1959 ROGER DALY writes, “I am a happy and grateful person. My work as an interim pastor relating to transitional and distressed churches (much like my former work as a therapist with severely conflicted families) is gratifying and apparently effective. My life with Sandy is rich and full of delight as we approach our 30th anniversary. Our life together offering retreat ministry at

Hallelujah Farm has grown, and it serves well the need and desire of groups, couples, and individuals to

All seventeen of us gather for Family Camp during the third week of July and celebrate a whole family gathering on the Saturday with siblings and their children. This culminates in a unique three-act, variously costumed drama featuring the youngest generation as actors and Sandy as the (often befuddled) director/producer. Throughout the day, there are many things seen, heard, tasted, smelled, and/or felt that cause us to fall in love with one another all over again—at least until next year. Also, photos, memories, stories help to feed us until the next gathering. Family Camp is an anchor for our lives.

Hallelujah Farm is a welcoming place, and we welcome you—friend, acquaintance, stranger—to pause with us for renewing body, mind, heart, soul.

News from ALICE HARLOW RONCONI: “I am still in touch via Skype with MARK POSSELIUS. I did speak with ANDY LOCSIN '77 just prior to Founders' Weekend. He and I will try to get together when he is in Las Vegas for a conference in September. My youngest son, Armando Ronconi, has been cast as William Barfee in The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee and will be performing the show in Las Vegas and at the Waterloo East Theatre in London. Our oldest, Alessandro Ronconi, is a psychology major and is in his final year at the University of Nevada Las Vegas.

SCOTT STEWARD, who is Director of Publications at the New England Historic Genealogical Society, is the recipient of top prizes from the National Genealogical Society (NGS) and the Connecticut Society of Genealogists (CSG). His book The Descendants of Judge John Lowell of Newburyport, Massachusetts, co-authored with Christopher C. Child, was awarded the 2012 “Award for Excellence: Genealogy and Family History Book” at the NGS annual conference; CSG honored both authors with the 2012 “Literary Award,

THE LIBRARY BOOK THAT CAME IN FROM THE COLD IT’S A FAY SCHOOL MYSTERY! This spring, Library Director Sharon Lux received a surprising package: a wellloved copy of Holling Clancy Holling’s picture book Paddle-to-the-Sea, accompanied by an anonymous letter.

Turns out, the book is an overdue wanderer from Fay School’s library. Forty-six years overdue, to be exact: the “Date Due” card on the back of the book (remember those?) is February 1, 1966.

On behalf of the book, the anonymous letter writer remarked, “‘Much I have traveled in the realms of gold and many goodly states and kingdoms seen,’ but I have always known where my home is and I am pleased to be able to come back at last to Southborough where I belong.”

In case you’re doing the math...because we did…Fay does not charge overdue library fines, but if we applied the fine system used by the Southborough Public Library (ten cents per day) the total fine as of this writing would be $1,691.50!

Most importantly, Paddle-to-the-Sea has come home, and Sharon Lux is delighted—the book joins its replacement copy, which joined the collection in 1989. It’s a lovely poetic twist that the story of Paddle-to-the-Sea is about a toy boat’s many-year voyage through the Great Lakes out to the Atlantic—we here at Fay are dying to know about the adventures of the book itself!

1983 Congratulations to Fay alumnus and Southborough resident, GREGG BELOFF, who was recognized in March by the Boston Celtics as their Hero Among Us, for his work as the founder of BioBall, an annual basketball tournament benefiting the Special Olympics Massachusetts (SOMA). To date, BioBall has raised over $500,000 to support SOMA and its participants.

We are enjoying married life in Newton and looking forward to moving to Beacon Hill later this year. In Memoriam FRED WOOD ’55 March 11, 2012 Born March 27, 1941, Fred Wood passed away from cancer at the age of 71 in Denver, Colorado. He is survived by his wife, Tanis Cornett; son and daughter-in-law, Nathan Wood and Linda Blatner; and grandchildren Mekenzie, Madison, and Carson. Fred relocated from Boston, Massachusetts in 1966 to Portland, Oregon, where he lived for 50 years. He was involved in education at Oregon Episcopal School and had a second career at Kaiser Permanente as chemical dependency counselor.

ROSEMARIE PERINI P’74, ’77 former trustee (19711978) April 7, 2012 Rosemarie Perini of Palm City, Florida, died at her home at the age of 83. She was born in San Francisco, California, and lived in Framingham, Massachusetts, later moving to Palm City in 1987. She was a dedicated trustee of Fay School: she was appointed in 1971 as Fay’s first female trustee since 1948 in anticipation of the School’s transition to co-education, and she served until 1978. She is survived by her husband of 56

GILBERT L. STEWARD, JR. ’43 April 16, 2012 Gilbert Livingston Steward, Jr. of Wenham, Massachusetts, died at the age of 83 after a brief illness. Born in Boston on December 20, 1928, he was the eldest son of the late Gilbert L. and Anne B. (Ayer) Steward. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Sally (Jay) Steward; by their children Anne B. Fuller and her husband Bruce of Aiken, South Carolina; John Steward of Belle River, P.E.I.; Martha Steward of Lakeport, California; Lisa Steward of Charleston, South Carolina; and by four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. His son Gilbert L. Steward III and brother Charles A. Steward ’46 predeceased him. He is also survived by his brother Campbell Steward ’45; by his stepbrothers Robert T. Coolidge ’47, Lawrence Coolidge, and Nathaniel S. Coolidge, and by numerous nieces and nephews.

Gil was for many years associated with the brokerage firm of Tucker, Anthony & R. L. Day in Boston. An antique car and boat enthusiast, he served as president of the Vintage Sports Car Club of America, and he was active in the North American Vintage Bentley Club, the Bentley Driver’s Club, the Classic Car

In Memoriam Club of America, and the North Shore Old Car Club. He was also a member of the Myopia Hunt Club in Hamilton and the East India Wharf Rats in Boston. Gil served on the Board of Trustees at Brookwood School, Stoneleigh-Burnham School, and Pingree School, and he was a selectman for the Town of Topsfield.

He was a summer resident of Center Sandwich, New Hampshire, on Squam Lake, for nearly 50 years, and he was a supporter of the New Hampshire Antique Boat Museum and the Squam Lakes Conservation Society. Mr. Steward served honorably in the U.S. Army in the late 1940s during the Japanese occupation.

CHARLES SUMNER BARTON ’65 April 23, 2012 Charles Barton passed away in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, after a two-year battle with cancer. He was with his wife, Marjon, brother, Jeff, and colleagues and friends.

Born on January 5, 1951, Charles grew up in Boston, Massachusetts. He earned his bachelor’s degree at Boston College in English literature and education and obtained his master’s degree in education in Schooling and School Leadership at Harvard University.

Charles’ 31-year career in international education spanned several countries: United States, Morocco, Malaysia, Japan, and Vietnam.

He spent 14 years as the Head of School at Nagoya International School (NIS) in Japan, and in 2007, he took on the position as Head of School at Saigon South International School (SSIS) in Vietnam, where he remained until his illness.

Charles’ tenure at SSIS resulted in an amazing growth, including the opening of the Ferdinand P. Tsien Early Childhood and Elementary School and the construction and opening of the new high school building, which will be named the Charles S. Barton Building in his honor.

In the tribute article written for Charles for the Saigon South International School, curriculum director Theresa Flaspohler writes, “SSIS mourns the loss of a very influential, dedicated, and humble leader. Many would describe him as a quiet, unassuming man whose love of baseball, golf, and leading young minds call attention to his fierce intellect, insight, integrity, strength of character, and passion for teaching and learning.”

STEPHEN AREND HOLTHAUSEN ’59 June 3, 2012 Stephen Arend Holthausen passed away unexpectedly in Westbrook, Connecticut at the age of 67. Born on November 27, 1944 in New Orleans, Louisiana to Ernest Arend Holthausen and the late Mary Elizabeth Prosser, he is survived by his two children, Christian Conley Holthausen and husband Simon Maurel of Paris, France, and Gretchen Ann Holthausen and husband Bradley Mettin of Guilford, Connecticut. He also leaves two brothers, John Holthausen ’62 of Guilford and Tom Holthausen ’65 of Westbrook; two nieces, Erica Anne Holthausen of Newburyport, Massachusetts, and Linsley Jean (Holthausen) Armstrong of Marysville, Ohio, as well as his longtime companion Sandra Reid of Middletown, Connecticut.

After attending Fay, Stephen graduated from Tabor Academy in 1963 and spent one semester at the University of Colorado before enlisting in the Army in 1965, where he was stationed in West Germany. Upon his return to the United States, he graduated from the Williams School of Banking in Williamstown, Massachusetts, before joining the Community Banking Company in New Haven, Connecticut. During his long career in banking, Stephen worked tirelessly to help finance small businesses along the Connecticut shoreline. For the last 17 years, Stephen worked for Connecticut State Department of Economic Development in the tourism division, promoting Connecticut’s cultural and heritage attractions. In 2002, the Mystic Coast & Country Leisure Council awarded him the Golden Pineapple Award for Excellence in Tourism Service and Hospitality.

After moving to Guilford in 1960, he married Diane Elizabeth Jillson in 1968. The couple raised their children in Westbrook before separating in 1992. Stephen remained an active member of the Westbrook community before moving to Centerbrook in 2007.

Warm and generous, Stephen touched the lives of countless people. He was an avid photographer who enjoyed traveling, cooking, and volunteering with charitable organizations throughout the state. He loved making people laugh and spending time with friends and family.

Faculty Profile: Max Bogaert

H

e has only been here for one year, but Max Bogaert has already contributed to the Fay community in numerous ways.

Max came to Fay last fall and spent the past year teaching kindergarten while also serving as a dorm parent to eighth and ninth grade boys in Steward Dormitory and coaching JV soccer, thirds basketball, and varsity baseball.

Working in independent schools has always seemed like a natural step for Max. A graduate of Clark University with a master’s degree in education from Lesley University, he attended independent schools himself, and he’s eager to create the same supportive and engaging learning environment that he experienced as a student.

Max has thoroughly enjoyed teaching in Fay’s inquiry-based kindergarten program, where the students’ interests inform the program of study and serve as a springboard for building students’ reading, writing, and math skills. “The children especially loved the unit on life cycles and butterflies,” he says.

“It was so exciting watching the children generate questions, make observations, and write about the experience. You can see their critical thinking and problem solving skills in action, and how ready they are for first grade.”

As a dorm parent and coach, Max also enjoys connecting with upper school students outside the classroom. “It’s fun getting to know them in a different context,” he says. “As a coach, you can help them develop skills and confidence.”

You can see their critical thinking and problem solving skills in action, and how ready they are for first grade.” team, which consists of the four classroom teachers, works closely to plan lessons and refine the program so that it meets their students’ needs. “Having two teachers in the classroom is incredible,” he says, noting how much he has learned from teaching partner Katie Zerega over the past year. “Our complementary teaching styles work well together, and everyone benefits from being able to share ideas and experience.”

He has also collaborated with Upper School teachers to bring Fay’s youngest and oldest students together for reading and writing activities. “It’s great to see the kindergartners having so much fun with the older students, and to see the upper school students take on a leadership role,” he says.

“It’s amazing to me how the teachers work together to make a meaningful experience for the students. That’s what’s great about teaching at Fay. It’s never just a job: everyone’s always willing to go the extra mile.”
