Is Rock Dead?By: Alfonso Pelaez ’15 First of all, what is rock music? It depends whom you ask. As I see it, it’s like a tree - its seed is the Blues (B.B. King, Howlin’ Wolf, Muddy Waters, Robert Johnson, etc.) with a mix of jazz and country. The trunk would be rock and roll (Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Buddy Holly, etc.), or rockabilly, with a mix of what would be 60's and 70's classic rock (Led Zeppelin, The Who, The Kinks, The Rolling Stones, Cream, etc.). Then you have the branches - punk rock (late 70's), metal (late 70's and 80's), grunge (90's), and post punk (80's-today). Rock music started because America started to send its blues records to England. This created the perfect environment for cultures and genres to mix. For instance, Cream or Led Zeppelin were inspired by artists like Muddy Waters and B.B. King. People, mostly teens, in England started to play blues, and as a result, the “British Invasion” commenced. Suddenly there were bands like “The Yardbirds” or “The Rolling Stones” (English boys trying to play blues) appearing. From the British invasion to the late 60's, things changed and a new era started - psychedelia and the era of hard and acid rock. We could blame it all on globalization. The Moosepaper

So I ask again, what is rock music? You could say it’s a strong type of music with sleek guitar riffs, drum solos, and memorable songs, but it really is more than that; it’s the identity of various generations; it’s a movement that played a huge role in our modern history. Is rock dead? Maybe for some; there is a time that the alternative becomes commercial, there is a time that a tendency kills another, and really that's how it works; but I don’t think rock is dead, it has only evolved. Culture is passed down from generation to generation. Change is bound to happen. If you want a taste of rock, I recommend Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band by The Beatles, which is considered to be the first conceptual rock album or progressive rock album. Disraeli Gears by Cream is their best album, and a great example of psychedelic rock and blues rock. Led Zeppelin I, Led Zeppelin II, and Led Zeppelin IV are the best works of this hard rock band and, last but not least, The Stooges by the grandfather of punk rock, Iggy, will leave you impressed. !1
