What was the biggest challenge your team faced this year? Belmont Hill’s team was extremely good, and we had trouble racing them.

What have you learned from playing team sports at Fay? I've learned that it makes a big difference when everybody contributes and puts effort into games.

Who's your favorite athlete and why? Chris Krieder of the Boston College Eagles hockey team, because he's quick and makes the game interesting.

A Message from Rob Gustavson, Head of School

Head’s Notebook: An Expectation of Excellence “What’s your vision for Fay?” I have given this question a great deal of thought over the past three years. I’ve sought context and perspective, and have listened and learned from trustees, alumni, faculty, staff, and current and past parents. As a result of these conversations, I have developed an appreciation of our many strengths and a clear understanding of ways in which we need to improve, and I now have a good sense of how to preserve our most important traditions while ensuring that we are also innovative and forward-looking. Although my full answer to this question would be complex, my fundamental vision is quite simple: I want Fay to embody an expectation of excellence.

When I use the word excellence, I have a specific meaning in mind. Aristotle wrote, “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.” Pursuing excellence is fundamentally different from trying to be flawless or perfect.

Excellence means striving to meet high standards by consistently doing our best. When we pursue excellence, we maintain a lingering desire to learn and grow. We focus on progress instead of achievements, asking ourselves at the end of each day whether we were better today than yesterday, and considering steps we can take to improve. We are justifiably proud of goals we achieve but never completely satisfied. We take time to recognize and appreciate our accomplishments, and then ask, “What’s next?”

I believe one of the most important things we can do for our children is instill the habit of excellence.

We do this in two ways: by providing consistently 2 | Fay Magazine 2011

high quality experiences, and by expecting students to exert earnest effort in every aspect of their lives at school. When children spend an extended amount of time in an environment where people consistently expect them to do their best, they begin to hold themselves to high standards and develop intrinsic motivation. Over time, the habit of excellence becomes so deeply ingrained that it becomes a mindset.

At Fay we demonstrate our commitment to institutional excellence by continuously seeking new ways to provide the best possible experience for our students. We possess not just a willingness, but an eagerness to ask, “How well are we doing?” and “How can we get better?

The groundbreaking research of eminent psychologist Carol Dweck shows that people tend to view the world in one of two ways, and the mindset they adopt profoundly affects how they lead their lives. People who have a fixed mindset believe that intelligence is set and ability is pre-determined; those with a growth mindset believe they can develop and change as a result of their efforts. Dweck’s research shows that a growth mindset leads to love of challenge, resilience in the face of setbacks, and greater success and fulfillment in life. People with a growth mindset believe that intelligence can be developed and talent can be grown; in Dweck’s words, “that a person’s true

potential is unknown and unknowable . . . (and) it’s impossible to foresee what can be accomplished with years of passion, toil, and training.”

Since the time of the School’s founding, Fay has believed in the transformative power of confidence, resilience, and determination. Now, nearly 150 years later, research from cognitive psychology and neuroscience has shown that our motto is true: optimism, persistence, and an unwavering desire for excellence have a profound impact on our ability to succeed.

A compelling description of the commitment to building a habit of excellence was written by Harvard Knowles, one of my most influential teachers at Phillips Exeter Academy. Reflecting on his long career working and living in a school community that embraces an ethic of excellence, Knowles wrote: All our efforts, even the small ones–perhaps especially the small ones–must be in the service of the highest standards. We, therefore, must struggle against sloth, fatigue, indifference, and all the selfdefeating impulses that would make us fall short of the best we have to offer. When we fail, it must be only after we’ve done our best.

Depending on our mindset, we may respond to this challenge with uneasiness at the thought of unrelenting self-discipline and struggle, or with invigoration at the prospect of continuous personal growth, limitless potential, and boundless possibility.

In the coming months, I will be working with the Board of Trustees to create a new long-range plan that articulates how we envision ourselves in the future and what we must do to make that vision a reality.

We will be discussing critical issues of people, program, and place. I look forward to sharing this work with you, hearing your ideas and suggestions, and working together to ensure that Fay continues to offer a broad, balanced, and challenging program that provides our students with enduring skills for a changing world—foremost among which is the habit of excellence.

Fay in Brief

Fay Announces that Grade Six Will Join the Lower School for 2012-2013 independent learners before entering the more fast-paced and demanding academic environment in the Upper School. A program tailored to the specific needs of sixth graders will give them extended time to explore subjects in depth and to spend longer periods of time with individual teachers who will get to know the students and their learning styles well. And as the “seniors” of the Lower School, sixth graders will benefit from a “capstone” year with more opportunities for independence, increased responsibility, and leadership.

Earlier this fall, Fay announced its decision to move grade six to the Lower School beginning in the 2012-2013 academic year.

With this decision, Fay’s Lower School will now comprise grades three through six.

The Upper School, including the International Student Program and the boarding program, will be composed of

grades seven through nine.

Fay’s Board of Trustees, Head of School Rob Gustavson, and the division heads anticipate significant benefits to Fay’s sixth graders as a result of this change. Students will have an additional year to build social and emotional confidence in a familiar, nurturing community and to develop as

Spotlight on Technology Fay’s campus is enhanced by exciting new technology upgrades this fall.

• The Technology Department, led by Director of Technology Peter Fearey, spent this summer coordinating a complete system and software upgrade of all computers on campus used by students, faculty, and staff.

• Upper School students are making good use of the 96 new Dell Netbooks that arrived on campus this fall. These “kid-friendly” machines are designed to withstand the rigors of adolescent use and include pop-proof keys, antimicrobial keyboards, seven-hour batteries, and rubberized exteriors to survive jolts and drops.

Sixteen of the Netbooks are now in the library to be checked out to individual students; the rest are on carts for classroom use.

•The Primary School is now home to a cart of 16 iPads to be used by individuals or groups. Teachers are exploring ways to integrate the iPads into their curricula, and some students have already had opportunities to work with the machines, including last year’s PreKindergarten class, who used the iPads to record video and audio observations of their pet gecko.

Faculty Update: What We Did On Our Summer Vacations Summer is a time to rest and recharge, but many members of Fay’s faculty and staff also took time for professional development, taking courses and pursuing experiences that deepened their understanding of their subject areas and the art of teaching.

History and Latin teacher Dan Blanchard represented Fay this summer at the Conference of Military Historians, which is hosted by the U.S. Army Center of Military History and the Army Historical Foundation. The conference welcomed more than 100 people affiliated with a branch of the American military as well as scholars from institutions including American University, Purdue University, University of California-San Diego, and Johns Hopkins University. Dan’s paper, “A New Appraisal of the Roman Army and the Frontiers 68-98 CE," addressed the logistical difficulties of sustaining the Roman Army during periods of prolonged combat.

Upper School English teacher Dan Roy was also at Middlebury this summer. He completed his second session at the Bread Loaf School of English, a summer graduate school at Middlebury, where he earned additional credits towards his master’s degree in English. His courses this summer included topics in poetry, film, and Shakespeare.

Fifth grade teacher Tyler Auer has begun work on his master’s degree in mathematics education at Boston University, where he took a course on trends in mathematics curricula taught by former Fay math department chair Suzanne Chapin.

Fay’s 2011 Faculty Enrichment Fund recipients also pursued new adventures this summer. Each year, the Faculty Enrichment Fund awards grants to members of Fay’s faculty who propose travel and study that will extend their own understanding of their subject area and, in turn, enrich the educational experience of Fay’s students through curricular and program innovations.

Art teacher Jane McGinty visited Panama to explore the countryside and learn more about the Panamanian culture with an emphasis on molas, a Central American art form that is also the focus of a longstanding third grade art project.

Three members of Fay’s World Languages Department headed off to Middlebury College in Vermont this summer for full immersion language programs. French teacher Audrey Goldman (pictured above) spent seven weeks in a Spanish program taking classes that focused on communication, composition, and culture. Latin and Mandarin teacher Emily Gifford participated in an eight-week Chinese program, where a highlight for her was her classes in Chinese calligraphy. And Spanish teacher Lindsay Mitchell attended the French immersion program. All enjoyed the challenge of studying languages less familiar than those they normally teach. Such cross-training will allow greater flexibility for the teachers and the School in the future and foster intercultural connections.

Art department chair Billy Claire traveled to England to study ceramics. His focus was medieval-style encaustic tiles: he visited museums and a factory in the area of Stoke-on-Kent to research possible art projects to integrate into the sixth grade history curriculum.

Upper school history teacher Emily Callahan spent three weeks in Honolulu this summer studying Southeast Asia in the years leading up to, during, and after World War II. Topics included colonialism and the rise of communism. For Emily the highlight was spending the 4th of July at Pearl Harbor, where she shared dinner with Pearl Harbor survivors, Filipino soldiers who fought with the U.S., and members of the Nisei, Japanese-Americans who defended their country even as many of their family members were forced into internment camps. Emily has already used the information and resources from her experience to design a unit about economics and ethics in food production. www.fayschool.org | 5

Community Service: A Way of Life at Fay Fay students continue to embody the School’s core value of Dedicated Service with service learning activities that benefit their community, locally as well as globally.

Here’s just a sampling.

• Upper School service trips: a seventh grade trip to New Mexico and an 8th grade trip to the Dominican Republic.

• The Lower School partnership with Cradles to Crayons, a nonprofit that provides toys, clothing, and necessities to needy families.

• A ninth grade service day at the Lowell Wish Project, where students sort donated clothing and baby goods for needy families in Merrimack Valley.

• A “care package” day, where boarding students assemble care packages for American servicemen and servicewomen overseas.

• The “Cardboard Tent City” experience, where Fay students spend a night in their own “tent city” on campus and participate in workshops with local experts on poverty and homelessness.

• An ongoing partnership with the Michael Lisnow Respite Center, a center for teens and adults with developmental disabilities. Fay’s Upper School students visit the Lisnow Center on a regular basis to coordinate and participate in activities. Fay opens its doors to the Lisnow guests once a month, when Upper School students facilitate gym games, run art projects, and coordinate activities with the visitors. The Lisnow guests also join students and faculty for lunch as fully integrated members of the community.

• Fundraisers and activities to benefit a host of nonprofits, including the Walk for Hunger, the Walk for Homelessness, the Susan B. Komen Walk for the Cure, the Make a Wish Foundation, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, the Fay Idol Benefit Talent Show, and the Benefit Dodgeball Tournament.

Scott LeBrun, Director of Student Life, is excited about the opportunities open to all students at Fay for community service and the benefits that these activities offer. “We focus on developing hands-on service projects so students can feel the rewards of helping others,” he says. “Our hope is that their efforts at Fay will inspire them to a lifetime of service.”

• Volunteering at Our Father’s Table, an organization that provides meals for homeless and needy people in the Metrowest region.

Lower School Update

One School, One Book

How Fay’s Lower School built community—and reading skills—with a division-wide literature unit

F

ay’s third, fourth, and fifth graders started school this fall with a mystery to solve: a lone puzzle piece tacked to a bulletin board in the Lower School hallway. What could it mean?

As the children wondered about the picture that would appear, additional puzzle pieces were added to the board on subsequent days until an image began to emerge.

It was the cover of a novel—the novel that all Lower School students would spend the next month reading as part of Fay’s inaugural “One School, One Book” project.

Head of Lower School Lainie Schuster introduced the “One School, One Book” initiative this year as an innovative way to bring the Lower School community together and to share the process of reading instruction with families.

The idea, she explains, was to have every student in the Lower School read the same book at the same time and to discuss the novel’s themes together.

The book Lainie chose was Linda Sue Park’s novel, A Single Shard, which tells the story of Tree-Ear, an orphan growing up in 12th-century Korea, and his apprenticeship to Crane-man, a master of celadon pottery. “The story is about the challenges that Tree-Ear faces as he builds a relationship with Crane-man and pursues his dreams,” she says.

“It’s a perfect tie-in to this year’s schoolwide theme, ‘You can if you will.’”

Lower School teachers met regularly with students to discuss key aspects of the story. Lunch in the Dining Room, with everyone gathered together, was an ideal opportunity to connect as a group, and students eagerly offered their opinions, interpretations, predictions, and questions.

“One School, One Book” wasn’t just a student-wide undertaking—it was an interdisciplinary undertaking, as well, with Lower School teachers presenting complementary lessons from multiple perspectives to enhance students’ understanding of the story.

Third grade teacher Linda Whittaker helped students locate Korea on a map. Social studies teacher Jess Girouard focused on the concepts of apprenticeship and trades. Science teacher Cecilia Owens explained how people extract clay from soil.

During art periods, students created their own celadon pottery projects with the help of art teacher Billy Claire.

The unit even integrated technology by bringing the novel’s author, Linda Sue Park, “into” the school through Skype videochat sessions, where students asked her questions about the novel and the writing process.

Perhaps the most interesting—and rewarding—aspect of the “One School, One Book” project was the inclusion of families in the reading process.

“This was a family undertaking,” Lainie explains. “Each evening’s reading assignment was intended to be a read-aloud,

with children and parents reading together. We wanted to provide an opportunity for families to discuss good literature and to build the home-school connection.”

With this goal in mind, parents were invited to school for two Friday afternoon literature circles, one for parents, teachers, and students, and the other just for parents and teachers.

“For our parent-child literature circle, parents talked about the themes of the novel along with their children,” Lainie says. “It was a chance for the parents to model the process of reading and reflection for their children—but it was also a chance for the parents to see how Fay students think and interact with each other on a daily basis.”

At the close of the unit, all participants—students, teachers, and parents—agreed it was a success. Lainie herself has particularly enjoyed the “residue” of the unit, noting how the story and its characters have stayed with the students long after the book was complete: “I still overhear the children referring to Min or to Tree-ear in the hallway or to Crane-man at lunch,” she says.

\Ê ohn Domolky ’06 HE WAS THE FIRST DIRECTOR OF SALES AT A STARTUP CAR COMPANY THAT’S BROKEN THE MOLD FOR AUTOMOTIVE DESIGN. HE’S SPOKEN ON PRIZE-DRIVEN INNOVATION AT THE MIT SLOAN SCHOOL OF MANAGEMENT. AND HE’S A JUNIOR IN COLLEGE. John Domolky was not to be stopped.

It was his final year at Tabor Academy, and it was time to choose a senior project. Other students were working on art installations, writing plays, interning at labs. John himself had plans to intern at the district attorney’s office in New Bedford. Then one day he read an article in The Boston Globe about a brand new car company called Local Motors with a revolutionary plan for automotive design, assembly, and retail.

He was hooked. A longtime car enthusiast who had once built a Factory Five Roadster from scratch at a build school in Michigan, he was intrigued by the Local Motors model and realized that an internship at the company would be a perfect fit with his interests.

“I looked up John Rogers, the Local Motors CEO, in the phone book,� John remembers. “I was persistent. I kept calling him every day until he agreed to interview me. We talked on the phone for an hour the next morning at 6:30 a.m., and it turned out that he and I had a quite a lot in common.�

Local Motors took on John as an intern, and he joined the company’s eight employees at a small facility in Wareham, Massachusetts.

It was a perfect fit. The same drive and persistence that got John his internship soon led him to a leadership role in the company, and the CEO asked him to stay on and kick off the sales effort. As Local Motors’ first director of sales, John sold the first 23 deposits for their first production car, the

Just as things were really taking off, however, John ran into an unusual roadblock that few directors of sales ever encounter.

“I wanted to stay on,” he said. “But the CEO said that I needed to go to college.”

“Something that is created by the community for the community—it’s an incredibly powerful marketing tool. In any field, whether it’s cars, or sneakers, or anything else, you build community interest and commitment by including customers in the creation process.”

A Local Motors car like the Rally Fighter is not your typical Ford. Each model has a limited production run of 2,000—and given the build requirements associated with the process, it’s a purchase that appeals primarily to diehard “gear heads.” But John, who himself purchased and built Rally Fighter #3, attests to the excitement and satisfaction that go with helping in design and assembly. “By coming to

The cars are assembled at a microfactory in Arizona, and the customer spends two weekends participating in the building process.

What’s even more exciting to John is how Local Motors’ sister company, Local Forge, is expanding this model to other industries. “Something that is created by the community for the community—it’s an incredibly powerful marketing tool. a host of creative designs and solutions. John addressed this concept recently when he spoke at the MIT Sloan School of Management, at a conference hosted by the London Business School and the UK Consul. “Local Forge’s goal is to reach out to other industries to show them how to replicate this model,” John says.

CHARTING A FUTURE COURSE John followed his CEO’s advice and enrolled at Boston University, where he is now a junior majoring in hospitality. His goal after graduation is to pursue an M.B.A. “I see great applications to the business world in terms of sales and customers,” he says of his degree program. “I think every business should have hospitality as a core value, with a focus on building relationships and making meaningful connections with customers.”

In reflecting on his journey so far, John notes that his eighth and ninth grade years at Fay were instrumental in cultivating his ability to pursue his dreams and find success. “Those two years had the biggest influence on my life,” he says. “I learned the things that have been most important to me—a solid academic grounding, of course, but also life skills like speaking in public, interacting with people, punctuality, and professionalism.”

“I also feel like I have a more global sense of the world,” he adds.

“I made so many international friends during my time at Fay. At BU, I’ve sought out an international community, too, and I think it’s because I developed an appreciation for diversity at Fay.” 12 | Fay Magazine 2011

By necessity, John has dialed back his day-to-day involvement with Local Motors, though he has stayed on as an investor—and by default, an ambassador, whenever he drives his own Rally Fighter on the roads. “Everyone wants to talk to me about the Rally Fighter when they see it on the street,” he says. “It’s by no means a low-profile car, but that’s part of the fun.”

From Seed to Sunflower: Interdisciplinary Learning in the Primary School

What makes a great interdisciplinary unit? One that brings together multiple fields of study in a meaningful way, captures children’s imaginations, and fosters their spirit of inquiry.

PROGRAM UPDATE

T

he cure for a gloomy late fall day can be found in the display cabinets next to the Primary School Dining Commons. There you’ll find a rainbow of brightly-colored watercolors featuring an array of sunflowers: tall and short, delicate and robust, all vibrantly full of life.

The watercolors are the work of this year’s Class of 2020—the first grade—who spent the fall engaged in an in-depth unit on seeds and plants that integrated science, art, literature, reading, and writing.

The unit was coordinated by Primary School science teacher Jennifer Telles, who teaches both art and science to children in Pre-Kindergarten through grade two. The marriage of the two disciplines is a natural one, Jennifer explains, since both require the skills of observation and interpretation.

What makes a great interdisciplinary unit? One that brings together multiple fields of study in a meaningful way, of course, but one that also captures children’s imaginations and fosters their spirit of inquiry.

“Children are naturally curious about how living things grow,” Jennifer explains, “and this unit gives students an opportunity to discover the answers to their questions through hands-on activities.”

Just as the Lower School students started off their “One School, One Book” project with a mystery (see article on page 3), the seeds and plants unit started with a mystery, too. Jennifer read aloud the book, The Story of Frog Belly Rat Bone, about a boy who plants a handful of strange “little black specks,” and then the children received their own little black specks to plant.

What would the seeds become? Over the course of the unit, children kept detailed plant journals where they drew and wrote about their observations. Over time, the children identified their seedlings as “tickle-me” plants (Mimosa pudica), with leaves that fold up when touched or when they come into contact with cold water.

Children practiced the scientific process with other experiments, too, including a seed dissection where they drew their own seed models, and an experiment with stalks of celery and food coloring that illustrated how water and food are transported from roots to leaves.

The Primary School’s science/art room is located on the first floor of the building, just outside the courtyard, where raised

beds are home to plants tended by all the children in Pre-K through grade two. As part of the seeds and plants unit, one of the first graders’ art activities was to paint watercolor still lifes of sunflowers harvested from the garden.

The watercolor activity was designed to stretch students’ observational skills, but it also incorporated some key math concepts, as children were challenged to draw their pictures to match the exact size of their subjects. “It’s tricky to draw to exact size,” Jennifer says. “The children have to juggle shape and proportion, and they’re constantly estimating to make sure that the parts come together to make a coherent whole.”

Throughout the unit, frequent read-alouds with students, both fiction and non-fiction, built the children’s breadth of knowledge about seeds and plants while also introducing children to the different strategies that readers use when tackling fiction or non-fiction. With informational books, says Jennifer, children focused on identifying parts of diagrams or making connections between words and pictures. With fiction, children took time to share their ideas and questions about the plot and the characters.

The unit also gave first graders an opportunity to practice writing in meaningful contexts, from their plant journals to the books they created documenting the life cycle of a seed.

Phonics, spelling, and handwriting all came into play as children recorded their observations and conclusions.

Though the growing season—and the unit—have both now come to a close, the children’s curiosity continues to expand. Jennifer is looking forward to the spring, when new seedlings will grow and inspire more student inquiry.

I

n Marcus Aurelius’ view, the student is not a passive recipient of knowledge. This principle also holds true in Fay’s Upper School, where eighth graders are immersed in a rigorous yearlong ancient history course that challenges them to take an active role in the process of historical discovery.

Fay history teacher Dan Blanchard has taught Ancient Greek and Roman History to eighth graders for six years now, and this year, history department chair Bruce Chauncey has joined him in presenting the course to every student in the eighth grade.

Ask Dan and Bruce about the primary goal of Ancient History, and their answer does not emphasize content— though, of course, they aim to have students walk away with a solid understanding of Greek and Roman political and military history and its impact on the modern day.

Rather, their focus is on having students build the skills of a historian—the ability to read and synthesize primary materials, think critically, research effectively, and write and speak persuasively.

“This is a historical methodology course,” Dan explains, “and in order to help students fully understand how to investigate a historical question, we decided to narrow the content.”

For this reason, Dan and Bruce have chosen to use primary sources almost exclusively instead of a traditional textbook. The reader that students receive in September is deceptively thin, but the readings are dense, and the table of contents reflects a classical “greatest hits”: Homer, Plutarch, Aristotle, Xenophon, and Thucydides, to name a few.

Over the course of the year, students learn about the Greco-Persian Wars, the Spartan and Athenian constitutions, Alexander the Great, and the rise and collapse of the Roman republic, all from the perspectives of historical contemporaries.

During a class this fall, for example, eighth graders were hard at work on an essay about Spartan culture. “We presented the students with a question about Spartan culture and how it changed as a result of a leader named Lykurgus,” Dan explains. “They read a song from the period called ‘Death is Victory,’ in which the ethics, values, and beliefs of Spartan culture are expressed. Students had to find evidence from the song to support their assertions about Spartan culture, in addition to evidence from other primary sources.”

The relatively short length of the readings— as with the song, for example—gives students the opportunity to practice the “close reading” that enables them to identify and analyze key information as they posit arguments and generate supporting evidence.

PROGRAM UPDATE

On the rare occasions when students do look at secondary sources, eighth graders have the opportunity to explore the ideas of historical bias and the reliability of historical writing. When learning about the life of Alexander the Great, for example, students read excerpts from two biographies that paint Alexander in two radically different lights: one, as a saint; the other, as an evil demagogue. “We explore the idea that secondary sources are at the mercy of their primary sources,” Bruce explains. “We ask, ‘What sources are these biographers relying on?’”

Ancient Greek and Roman History provides thorough preparation for Fay’s ninth grade program, which now includes challenging seminar-style classes such as Diagnosing the Modern World (a course co-taught by the history and science departments) and Topics in Modern American History.

“What makes Ancient Greek and Roman History work is that we’re focusing on the students’ own intellectual work— their interpretations and analysis,” Dan says.

These classes require the methodological skills that are currently emphasized in the ancient history class. Most importantly, however, they require that students take an active role in their own learning, through reading, research, analysis, and questioning.

“There’s never a wrong answer, provided there’s evidence to support the argument,” Bruce adds. “Through this structure, we’re giving students the freedom to become independent thinkers. It’s challenging, but I think they appreciate what they’re doing.”

Season Wrap-Up It was another successful season for Fay’s athletes, with every student in grades five through nine participating in a range of interscholastic and intramural offerings.

Among the highlights of the season was an exciting victory for the crosscountry team at the Park School Invitational Meet on October 17. Fay’s team competed against a field of 276 runners from independent schools throughout Massachusetts, and the team won the meet by having the lowest combined time for its five fastest runners.

Fay’s sixth grade boys also took second place at the sixth grade soccer tournament at Fessenden, and the junior varsity volleyball team is currently celebrating an undefeated season (as of this writing).

Fay Welcomes New Director of Athletics Fay welcomed Rob Feingold as its new Director of Athletics this fall. A graduate of Lewis and Clark College with a master’s in education from Boston University, Rob was Middle School Athletic Director and an Admission Officer at Noble and Greenough School, and prior to that he was Assistant Director of Admission and a math teacher at Fenn School.

“I’ve been so impressed by the enthusiasm and work ethic that I see in Fay’s athletes, which has contributed so much to the teams’ successes this fall,” he says.

What do you like best about cross-country?

You can always improve your time no matter what! Also, Fay sports are great because they get you to meet people in other grades that you most likely would not have met otherwise.

What was your favorite moment from this season?

When Fay Cross Country won the Park School Invitational, because it really brought our team together.

Who's your favorite athlete and why? My favorite athlete is Brad Marchand because even as a rookie in the NHL, he was one of the best players on the Bruins. This inspires me because it expresses Fay’s motto, “You can if you will.”

ANTHONY JIHWAN KIM ’12 (Grade 9) HOMETOWN: Seoul, Korea SPORT: Soccer What year did you come to Fay? 2010 How long have you played soccer? Since I was seven years old.

What do you like best about soccer? It is very challenging, and it motivates me all the time. I just love the game.

What was your favorite moment from this season?

Our games against Fessenden and Shore were great!

Last year, we lost to these two teams, 3-0 and 3-1.

This year, we beat Shore 2-1, and we lost to Fessenden 2-1—but we were able to dominate a big part of the game against Fessenden.

What was the biggest challenge your team faced this year? Fessenden had an extremely well organized team. In the first 15 minutes, they scored two goals on us. However, we never gave up and possessed the ball for a big part of the game, scoring a goal in the second half.

What have you learned from playing team sports at Fay? I learned that you can’t be an individual player. You have to be a team player and sometimes sacrifice yourself so the team can shine.

Who's your favorite athlete and why? Thierry Henry. Watching him play for Arsenal made me begin playing soccer. www.fayschool.org | 21

Fay Partners with Positive Coaching Alliance This year, Fay has partnered with Positive Coaching Alliance (PCA), a non-profit organization whose mission is to "transform youth sports so sports can transform youth." PCA offers parent workshops and training for coaches that focus on creating a positive, characterbuilding youth sports environment.

Fay kicked off its partnership with PCA during the first week of school with a special seminar for ninth graders that focused on how to balance the goal of winning with other, equally important goals in athletics. This was followed by a parent workshop on the "doublegoal" coach model—one that focuses on learning life lessons as well as winning—and how it relates to middle and high school sports. Fay’s coaches and faculty were trained in December.

Look for additional workshops for parents, coaches, and students this year that will emphasize the school’s core values of Earnest Effort and Wellness of Mind, Body, and Spirit.

What was the biggest challenge your team faced this year? Trying to overcome the fact that very few of us had played together at the start of the season.

What do you like best about soccer? Having fun and working hard.

What's the hardest thing for you about soccer?

Having to play many different positions for my team instead of just staying at one position.

What was your favorite moment from this season?

Scoring two goals in our 5-1 win over Shady Hill.

What have you learned from playing team sports at Fay? That if you want to win and have fun you have to also work hard!

Who's your favorite athlete and why? Ray Allen of the Boston Celtics, because he’s a great player and a role model.

FRANCISCA WEIRICH-FREIBERG ’14 (Grade 7) HOMETOWN: Newark, NJ SPORT: Soccer What year did you come to Fay? I started in the 6th grade.

How long have you played soccer? This is my first year.

What do you like best about soccer? I love that it is a team sport, so you get to really know the people on your team.

What was your favorite moment from this season? We had one game in which we were not doing our best, but we stopped and realized what we had to improve upon and went back and won the game.

What's the best thing you saw a teammate do this year? Carina Kotidis ’15 has a lot of good headers and shots.

What was the biggest challenge your team faced this year? Our first game was challenging because we had had only one day of practice as a team.

What have you learned from playing team sports at Fay? That no matter what, when you are in the game your teammates have your back.

Fay School Tom McKean ’64:

Fay’s New President of the Board of Trustees This past July, Fay welcomed Thomas McKean ’64 as the new president of the Board of Trustees.

Tom is an attorney in private practice in Boston, where he specializes in trial work related to family and criminal law. He and his wife, Sylvia, live in Concord, Massachusetts, and they have three sons.

Fay has long been part of the McKean family tradition—Tom’s uncle, Frederic Winthrop ’18, attended Fay, as did Tom’s brothers John ’63, Robert ’66, and David ’72, and his half brothers Shaw ’39 and Harry ’39. Tom attended Fay for his seventh and eighth grade years and graduated in 1964. He later graduated from St. Mark’s, earned his bachelor’s degree from Harvard, and graduated from American University Law School.

“The academics at Fay were interesting and focused, and I loved the sports in particular. The program was organized, and we felt safe and supported at all times. Life was full, and we had the sense that we were there for a purpose.”

Reflecting on his time at Fay, Tom remembers: “It was a very happy time for me. The academics were interesting and focused, and I loved the sports in particular. Now in his twenty-ninth year on Fay’s board, Tom brings to his leadership role a broad institutional knowledge about the School as well as a passion for Fay’s mission and core values. “Fay has always provided a solid academic grounding for its students, but over the years it has also provided something equally important— a way for many students to have a happy childhood. Fay has always offered students numerous opportunities for challenge and growth in a safe, welcoming, and consistent setting.”

After a period of transition and growth, including welcoming a new head of school, the addition of the Primary School, and significant upgrades and additions to Fay’s campus, Tom is focused on strengthening the School’s excellent position and securing its long-term fiscal stability: “We’ve developed a physical plant at Fay School that is second to none. Now, it’s essential that we build Fay’s endowment. Doing so will allow us to enhance the economic diversity of the families who send their children to Fay, and will ensure that Fay continues to attract and retain a top-notch faculty that stays at the forefront of innovation in teaching.”

To this end, Tom is leading the board through Fay’s strategic, long-term planning process, which will be followed by a fundraising campaign to support the plan’s main goals. “What excites me about this process is the opportunity to build on last year’s AISNE [Association of Independent Schools of New England] accreditation study, which tells us where Fay is today, and gather input from all of Fay’s constituencies to create a vision of Fay’s future—and a plan for how to get there.”

NEW TRUSTEES

Jo Greystone P’18 Joins Fay Board of Trustees Fay welcomed Jo Greystone as a member of the Board of Trustees this past summer. Jo and her husband, Steven, live in Southborough, and their son, Michael, is a third grader at Fay this year.

Jo grew up in Indiana and graduated from Purdue University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in education, and she spent many years working in sales and finance as a real estate agent and stockbroker.

Jo and Steven made the move to Hopkinton from Boston when Michael was two and a half, and, she says, “We’ve had our eye on Fay ever since.” Michael began at Fay in the first grade— back when grade one was the point of entry for all Fay students—and he had the privilege of being in the first group of second graders to “graduate” from the Primary School Building last year.

Jo has been actively involved in the life of the School from day one, volunteering for numerous events through the Parents’ Association and serving as a parent representative for the Annual Fund Committee for the past two years. In her new position as trustee, Jo will be serving on the Advancement Committee and the School Life Committee, two groups that will benefit from her professional experience, her training as an educator, and her experience as a parent in Fay’s Primary and Lower School divisions.

His awards include the Novello Literary Award for Leaving Maggie Hope (2003), and the Oscar Arnold Young Award for The Man Who (2005), as well as the Irene Blair Honeycutt Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Arts. 1951 On September 23, Westminster School established, and the Class of 1966 endowed, the ALAN F. BROOKS '55 Distinguished Alumni Award.

Named after Alan, its first recipient, the award will be given each year to an alumnus who exemplifies Westminster's mission and practices the school's core values of community, character, balance, and involvement.

Alan who is a member of Fay’s board of trustees, retired a year ago from Westminster after 50 years of service to the School.

1952 DIXON ARNETT has announced the launch of his novel, Galahad’s Quest, which he describes as follows: “While the novel is not set in a particular election cycle, the current 2011-2012 presidential season alarmingly highlights the thesis underlying this book: partisan gridlock, exponentially growing defection of registered voters to independent and minor parties, the outdated Electoral College, and the yearning for finding a fix for a political system perceived as broken.”

In his note to us, Dixon added, “This book has been ten years in the making and has the potential for at least two sequels. Who says that Fay School graduates just ‘retire and fade away’?”

KEN MARSHALL writes, “Still practicing plastic and reconstructive surgery in the Boston area, doing some medical school teaching and going annually to Guatemala to do volunteer reconstructive surgery, sometimes cleft lip and palate, sometimes general reconstruction and, most recently, hand surgery for congenital and traumatic deformities. I have two sons, one in finance, the other in the hospitality/restaurant business, both of whom are married and have 2 and 1/2 children. I myself remain blessed with excellent health, though, in August, I had a very close call with a sudden, unexpected cardiac arrest during a routine shoulder operation, which I happily survived. This episode led to an exhaustive cardiac work-up, which thankfully proved to be normal.

Subsequently, I have gone back to full surgical practice, to playing squash, and lots of travel. Last year, I attended

a mini reunion on my old retired US Naval aircraft carrier, the USS Intrepid (served on it 1966 1969 during Vietnam). The Intrepid is now our Naval Air and Space Museum and is a memorial and museum celebrating naval aviation and air and space exploration. I look forward to a 60th reunion at Fay in 2012 and hope to see returning classmates.”

From KEN HEARD: “My most recent masters swimming meet was last July in Honolulu, competing with four others in the 70-74 age group in five individual events. In such a small group I placed in four of them; just by finishing I received two silvers (1500-meter free and 200-meter back) and a bronze (800-meter free). To manage a gold I had actually to beat somebody and did: the 100-meter back, by one-third of a second. My fifth event was the 400meter free, where I finished fourth out of four.

FROM IDEA TO ENTERPRISE: DAVID PAQUETTE ’87 One alumnus takes Fay’s motto, ‘You can if you will,’ to heart with a new hydration drink and a startup business After completing the 2004 Boston Marathon, DAVID PAQUETTE ’87 was dehydrated to the point of needing IV fluid soon after he crossed the finish line. That’s when an idea came to him for a new kind of hydrating beverage.

Over the past eight years, David has taken his idea and transformed it into a product and a business. The product is Biba, an “off the field” hydrating drink for active individuals. The name of David’s business is Poteris Ventures—the name may ring a bell, as it is based on Fay’s motto, Poteris Modo Velis (‘You can if you will’), which is also this year’s schoolwide theme.

A student of Latin at Fay and later at St. Mark’s, David felt that Fay’s motto would not only be a good name for his new startup but also saw the inherent meaning as a reminder to himself about perseverance and success through effort and hard work. David says that ever since he was a student at Fay, he has always tried to live by the School’s motto. Its three words linking effort, initiative, perseverance, and action are “such a powerful les-

son for kids,” he says. “The choice to name my business after the motto cemented my bond with Fay.” A dentist in nearby Hudson, David describes himself not as a serial entrepreneur but more of a traditional small business owner. Creating a new consumer product, raising investment capital, and managing production and distribution were all new obstacles for him to contend with. When it was time to test his new product with focus groups, he worked with his clients at his dental practice, incorporating their feedback and tweaking the recipe. Ultimately, he has invented a new kind of thirst quencher targeted to a broader market than traditional sports drinks.

Today, David is beginning to see the fruits of his labor. Biba has gone from selling in just a few local stores to more than 220 stores with distribution from the seacoast to Sturbridge, including a spot in the Natural Harvest section of 145 Shaws stores. Poteris Ventures, along with its product, Biba, was also a finalist in Mass Challenge, a competition for local entreprenuers.

While Poteris Ventures has seen success so far, David sees a long road ahead and is looking for investors to spur the company’s growth. While he has only one full-time employee at the moment, he has several interns and is always looking for more. He also knows that the magic ingredients for Biba will be advice, mentoring, and support from Fay friends and colleagues. Just as he benefited from the expertise of others as he developed his product and business plan, he hopes to continue working with others in the Fay community as Poteris Ventures expands and thrives. “It’s so important for a small business to get any support it can from its community,” he says.

college career with a bachelor’s degree in aviation business administration from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University here in Daytona Beach, Florida. I have put my private pilot’s license to use by pursuing my passion of aviation within the insurance field. I have recently acquired my property and casualty insurance license and have been working within an aviation insurance and risk management firm here in Florida, which I am thoroughly enjoying. We work with all types of aviation businesses and private/corporate jet owners in order to place their insurance. I try to travel as much as possible, which has enabled me to see various locales, and I was fortunate enough to be able to take a couple of months off this past summer to travel. Whether it was by land, sea, or road, I saw pretty much every state on the East coast with my girlfriend, making several stops along our journey to visit friends and family. Our family still has the Ford dealership up in Marlboro, Mass., although my parents have abandoned the snowy winters for warm gulf breezes in Naples, Florida. In my spare time I continue mentoring kids at my church, and I’m always dancing. I have recently become a certified Zumba instructor and enjoy teaching during my spare time.”

2007 JOEY VENDITTI writes, “I am currently a freshman at Syracuse University, and I am loving it! The campus is amazing, my friends are really cool, and my classes are so interesting. I am majoring in biology so I take a lot of science

classes like chemistry, and obviously biology. But I have to say, my favorite so far has been my scuba diving class— yes, scuba diving class. It meets once a week, and the class goes to one of the Olympic-sized pools on campus, where we put our gear on and learn new scuba diving skills. It’s the most exciting class I've ever taken, and at the end of the semester I will become a certified scuba diver!”

2008 ALASTAIR HEWITT reports that he’s doing well at the University of Arizona and staying busy by applying for a position as a columnist with the school newspaper and joining a mixed martial arts club. He writes, “I am looking to start a wrestling club of my own to maintain my fitness as well as to improve my skills,

JEFF OTT ’09 JOINS HARVARD UNIVERSITY WRESTLING TEAM Kelsey (ISL League) champion, and three-time Most Outstanding Wrestler. He is the first multiple time AllAmerican at Belmont Hill and the first multiple-time New England champion. Jeff is also a three-time National Prep All-American, and 2010 National Prep Champion.

This past July, Jeff placed third at the prestigious Junior Nationals freestyle tournament held in Fargo, North Dakota.

This tournament is widely considered the toughest high school tournament in the country, with participants from 46 states. Jeff went 8-1, losing only to the eventual champion.

He led the tournament (1200+ wrestlers) in the most pins in the least amount of time.

Former Fay student and wrestler JEFF OTT recently committed to Harvard University, where he will join the wrestling team. A senior at the Belmont Hill School, Jeff is a three-time New England prep wrestling champion, including Most Outstanding Wrestler in 2010. He is a three-time Graves-

Jeff is undefeated in the ISL and in three years has only failed to score bonus points in one match. He has suffered only one defeat (freshman year) in New England in his entire career.

Entering his senior season, Jeff’s overall record is 99-12.

He is 65-1 in New England, and 31-0 in the ISL. Jeff projects as a 133-pounder in college. He is undecided on his field of study.

Recently, Suren and I, along with CONNOR LIGHT and BETH PEZZONI donated 400 backpacks filled with school supplies to Burncoat Elementary and Lincoln Street School in Worcester, Mass. On December 15, Suren and I will travel to Thailand with PEP RUCKPANICH and KYLE PARSONS to donate to two schools, one in Bangkok and one in a rural area.

In Memoriam WILLIAM “BILL” TIBBITS ’38

WILLIAM “BILL” BARBER III ’54

Bill Tibbits died December 12, 2009 at the age of 85 from complications due to a stroke in 2006. Born in Canada in 1924, he was the youngest child of Marguerite Vinton Harris Tibbits and Rev. John Knox Tibbits, retired rector of the All Saints Episcopal Church in Hoosick, NY. He was the beloved husband of Svetlana Orekhova-Tibbits, Ph.D.

William “Bill” Barber III, 71, died peacefully on Tuesday, August 16, 2011 at his Concord home, surrounded by his loving family and cared for by North Shore Hospice. He was the beloved husband for 48 years of Louise (Cutting) Barber.

The Tibbits family held a special place in the history of Troy, N.Y. Bill was a great grandson of the late Congressman George Tibbits, fourth mayor of Troy, and a great nephew of Civil War brigadier General William Tibbits.

After graduating from Fay, Bill attended Pomfret School and later earned a bachelor’s degree from American University and a master’s degree in journalism from the University of Maryland. He was editor-in-chief of the Military Retirement magazine of the Pentagon.

Bill was the chairman of the Tibbits Historical Foundation and a member of the National Press Club and the Fort Myer Officers’ Club. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sons, William Badger John Tibbits, Jr. of Nashville, Tenn., and Henry Bruce Tibbits of Rio Nido, Calif.; his mother-in-law, Alexandra Danilova; his stepchildren, Alexandr and Andrey Orekhov; grandchildren, Agata, Eva, and Phillip Orekhov, all of Moscow, Russia; and many nieces and nephews.

During the Vietnam War, Bill served as a private in the U. S. Army Medical Corps and U. S. Army Reserves stationed at Ft. Devens, Mass.

Born in Framingham on June 12, 1940, Bill was the son of the late William Wyatt Barber, Jr. and Margaret H. (Patton) Barber.

He grew up in Southborough; after attending Fay, he attended St. Mark’s School and graduated with a degree in Romance languages from Princeton University in 1962. After graduation, he returned to St. Mark’s School, where his father served as headmaster, to head up the school’s modern languages department and teach French.

After thirteen years as an educator, Bill moved his family to Concord, where he and Louise became proprietors of The Cheese Shop located on Walden Street in Concord center. Together, they operated the well-regarded gourmet business for twenty-eight years before retiring in 2002.

In addition to his wife, Louise, he is survived by his children, Rusty Barber, Ted Barber, and Meg Prestidge, along with four grandchildren and his sister Eustis Cowardin.

JEFFREY “JEFF” KALAT ’59 Jeffrey Mead Kalat, 67, of St. Pete Beach, Fla., passed away on October 1, 2011 in his sleep from natural causes.

Born in 1944 in Hyannis, Mass. to Paul and Virginia Kalat, Jeff was raised in Worcester, Mass., and summered in Osterville, Mass. After graduating from Fay, Jeff attended Tabor Academy in Marion, Mass. and attended Rutgers. His professional life included working for Sysco Boston, now located in Norton, Mass. He was a member of the St. Petersburg Yacht Club and loved sailing.

Jeff's interests included reading, computers, boats, and cars.

PHILIP MOORE former faculty

Besides his family, Larry’s loves included his church, the Universalist Church of Rockland, bird watching, canoeing, hiking, gardening, travel, and watching the New England Patriots. Some of his fondest memories were numerous canoe trips with his wife on the lakes, streams, and rivers of Midcoast Maine, his bird watching trips to Hog Island in Muscongus Bay, his home and gardens in North Waldoboro, and his reconnections with students he taught and helped develop over four decades of teaching in New England.

Philip H. Moore, 75, passed away at his home in Dartmouth, Mass., on July 18, 2011. He was the husband of Mary Ellen (Wilson) Moore.

Mr. Moore was born in Washington, D.C., son of the late Elwood and Celia (Smith) Moore, and resided in Dartmouth since 1981. He was Assistant Headmaster at the Bement School, Athletic Director at Fay, and recently taught in the Dartmouth school system and St. Francis School in Acushnet.

He was a member of the Barney's Joy Beach Club and the Bike Club of America. He was a beloved husband, father and teacher.

In addition to his widow, he is survived by his children: David Anson Moore and his wife, Kerry of Port St. Lucie, Fla. and Emily Moore Fralick and her husband, Thom of Tacoma, Calif.; his grandchildren: Sidney Moore, David A. Moore, Jr., Oliver Fralick and Finn Fralick; and several nieces & nephews.

LAWRENCE “LARRY” MURPHY former faculty Lawrence Perry Murphy, 83, passed away in his sleep Sept. 5, 2011, at Pen Bay Medical Center in Rockport. Born in Utica, N.Y., on Jan. 18, 1928, Larry was the third child of Edward and Margaret Murphy.

Larry attended Brown University and graduated from the University of Connecticut. He spent many summers throughout his college and early adult life as a camp counselor at Medomak Camp in Washington. A career educator in English and English literature, Larry also coached football and tennis and was an athletics director and dramatics coach, teaching at Fay, Moses Brown School, and

MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL AND THE PRESIDENT OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES

t is our pleasure to report on the highlights of Fay’s past fiscal year.

Without question, this was an especially busy and pivotal year for the School, as Fay opened the doors of its brand new Primary School building to students in Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten for the first time. Students may now pursue eleven years of education at Fay. We are pleased that so many families chose Fay for their child’s first school experience, and we are proud to be providing an extraordinary program for our youngest students that embodies the School’s mission and core values.

In the 2010-11 academic year, we were tremendously honored that Fay was the recipient of many generous contributions from members of our community. In January, an anonymous current family launched the Faculty Excellence Challenge with a $750,000 unrestricted gift to the School. In May, we received notice that Fay would receive a contribution of over a million dollars, thanks to the most generous and thoughtful estate plan of Mr. Robert A. Pinkerton, class of 1917. We are profoundly grateful for the foresight evident in this gesture.

In the spirit of last year’s theme, Making Connections, we also wish to acknowledge the 1,001 donors—parents, alumni, grandparents, and friends—who together contributed $1,275,614 to Fay’s Annual Fund. This amount represented a 13% increase when compared to the previous year and was nearly 10% in excess of our goal. This result is a wonderful sign of our community’s support for the daily work of Fay’s teachers, coaches, and staff, as well as a strong endorsement for the direction in which the School is heading. Why I Give: Q&A with Tarah Donoghue Breed ’97 Fay welcomed alumna Tarah Donoghue Breed ’97 back to campus this fall as a member of Fay’s staff.

Tarah attended Fay’s Upper School for seventh, eighth, and ninth grades; she attended St. Mark’s for high school and graduated from Georgetown University with a degree in political science.

In the spirit of Fay’s motto, ‘You can if you will,’ Tarah pursued her passion for government and politics and spent three years at the White House as Deputy Press Secretary for First Lady Laura Bush. Following her time in Washington, Tarah served as Communications Director for the Massachusetts Republican Party, where she worked on the campaigns for Senator Scott Brown and gubernatorial candidate Charlie Baker.

Now back at Fay, Tarah serves as Admission Officer, spending each day meeting with prospective families and students and sharing the Fay experience with them. She also coaches Fay’s varsity field hockey team.

WHY DID YOU COME BACK TO WORK AT FAY?

I think it’s never too late to start a new career path. In the Office of Admission I am able to expand the reach of Fay and recruit diverse and talented students to join our community. As a coach, I also hope to provide young athletes with the same great memories and self-confidence that I gained at Fay.

In particular, I recall American History at Fay as a course where I learned fundamental note-taking and analytical skills, but also found a life-long passion for history! My interest in history only intensified during my years working in the East Wing of the White House.

WHAT DID YOU LIKE BEST ABOUT BEING A STUDENT AT FAY?

WHY DO YOU GIVE TO THE ANNUAL FUND?

Fay is a cultural gateway. I was able to form friendships here with students from around the globe. It is a rare occurrence for a school to facilitate such broad cross-cultural understanding at a young age.

I give to Fay to sustain the talented and selfless residential faculty who contribute so much to the school. As an off-campus staff member and former day student, I am ever-impressed by the constant level of energy and commitment from Fay’s residential faculty. After a long day teaching and coaching, they continue to mentor and support students in the dorms. They are constantly giving to the school without asking for much in return.
