Employee spotlight Cory Dorsey loves the variety of challenges in Public Works Public Works Maintenance Tech Cory Dorsey passed the five-year milestone with the City of Fayetteville in late June, and he says he still enjoys the variety of challenges and opportunities that arise on a daily basis. During the spring and summer months, Dorsey and his team can spend as much as six or seven hours a day tending to public landscaping within the Fayetteville city limits, but they still respond to other needs and incidents as they arise. During the fall and winter months, Public Works personnel focus on retention ponds, stormwater catch basins, mulching, tree trimming, hedge pruning and all
sorts of other jobs. All year long, Public Works is the go-to department for setting up and cleaning up whatever necessary for the City’s special events. “Sometimes, we work the events, too, if we’re needed,” Dorsey said. “We do a little bit of everything.” And that’s what Dorsey loves about his job (in addition to working with a lot of fantastic co-workers). “I like it, because you’re outdoors. You’re not really confined,” Dorsey said. “One day, you may be cutting grass, and the next you may be trimming trees or working with concrete. “There’s always something new.”

Coffee with a Cop returns to a welcoming community

REACH students brighten City Hall
REACH students were celebrated at the Fayette County Board of Education headquarters (above) in May after completing another successful year. They are pictured enjoying a pizza party at City Hall (below-right) and ice cream from Scoops at Triumph Station (right).
Seven students from the Fayette County Public Schools (FCPS) REACH program recently wrapped up another successful year of working at Fayetteville City Hall. These students were formerly enrolled in the FCPS Exceptional Children’s program before graduating into the REACH program, which is designed to teach them transitional skills as adults living and working in the community. Their work with the City of Fayetteville involved weekly visits of two to three hours, when they helped to shred paper documents as part of the City’s digital archiving program. The partnership between REACH and the City came about in early 2018 when REACH Instructor and Transition Lead Ivory Cloud approached Mayor Ed Johnson and City Manager Ray Gibson, who were keen to get started right away. Human Resources Director Nella Cooper and Community & Economic Development Director David Rast took the lead from there as the City’s liaisons. REACH students also gain work experience from relationships with Your Pie, Panasonic, and the corporate office of This Is It! Southern Kitchen & BarB-Q. “It has been great exposure for them,” Cloud said. “The City staff has been so receptive and welcoming.

Citizen Engagement Portal offers details of major developments around the City Interested residents and other community stakeholders often ask City personnel what is being built on different construction sites around town, which is one reason the “Construction in the Community” feature was added to this publication (see Pages 8-11). In recent months, the Community Development Department created the online, GIS-driven Citizen Engagement Portal, which, among many other things, takes users on a deeper dive into those major construction projects. Hotel under construction in Town at Trilith neighborhood A boutique hotel is under construction in the Town at Trilith neighborhood located on the west side of Fayetteville across from the Trilith Studios campus on Veterans Parkway.
The hotel will have a restaurant, rooftop bar, meeting rooms, venue spaces, ballroom, outdoor pool, fitness center and more. Follow Town at Trilith on social

Butcher Brown to headline Fayetteville’s first-ever Mad South Jazz Festival, August 6
Main Street Fayetteville has announced that Butcher Brown will headline the City’s first-ever Mad South Jazz Festival supported by Julian Vaughn, and Bradie Speller + Climate Change. The free event happens August 6 at City Center Park from 6-10:30 p.m. Mayor Ed Johnson dreamed up the idea for the City to create a jazz festival, and it quickly gained traction toward becoming one of Fayetteville’s signature events for 2022. He noted the community’s increasing diversity of residents and explained that a jazz festival hits that cultural sweet spot, appealing to a broad spectrum of people. “Jazz is a genre of music that captivates and encompasses a wide
variety of musical styles,” Mayor Johnson said. “As the diversity of the City’s population increases, we want to be intentional about providing musical entertainment across the various genres.” Hailing from Richmond, Virginia, Butcher Brown is a five-member ensemble blending jazz with hip hop, funk, rap, rock, and soul. The band is lined up to play festivals in Michigan, Illinois, California, and back home in Virginia before rolling down south to Georgia for the Mad South Jazz Festival. Guests are invited to bring lawn chairs, blankets, and coolers with non-alcoholic beverages only. Food trucks will include Whatcha Cookin’ Baby Seafood truck, PTC Grill, and

Mommie’s Empanadas. Other treats are available on site at Scoops, and Hog Pit BBQ, with adult beverages available at Line Creek Bus Barn and The Hummingbird Room. New Fayetteville Public Safety video reminds drivers to “move over” for roadside emergency vehicles
The City of Fayetteville Fire Department and Police Department have collaborated to produce a public safety advisory video reminding the public to “move over” when they see actively engaged emergency services vehicles on the side of the road. Not only is this a helpful safety measure that drivers can take, but it is also mandated by Georgia law. According to the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, “Motorists traveling in the lane adjacent to the shoulder must move over one lane when emergency and utility vehicles are stopped on the side of the highway and operating in an official capacity. Vehicles included in the law include all first responders (law enforcement, fire, EMS), utility vehicles, Department
of Transportation vehicles, H.E.R.O. Units, and wreckers tending to an accident.” If it is impossible for a vehicle to safely move over to another lane, the driver should “reduce the speed of the motor vehicle to a reasonable and proper speed for the existing road and

traffic conditions, which speed shall be less than the posted speed limit, and be prepared to stop.” Violators may be fined up to $500. Because everyone’s safety is important, personnel from the City’s Fire, Police, and Communications departments collaborated to produce this engaging “Move Over Fayetteville” video with clear messaging on how motorists can help keep emergency workers safe on the roadside. The video has been published on the City’s YouTube channel (https://youtu. be/I9Mv1rZM1GM), and it will be promoted throughout the community, including on the City’s other social media channels and website.
City Center Park improvements continue The new City Center Park is the most active and dynamic park space the City of Fayetteville has created and managed in its nearly 200 years of existence, and its popularity grows seemingly on a daily basis. Over the past year, City staff have learned a great deal about managing all of the park’s features, and ongoing efforts continue to improve the experience for the community. One of the more recent challenges has been the hillside slide getting too hot when exposed to hours of direct sunlight. The unusually high May and June temperatures prompted Public Works personnel to close the slide while seeking a remedy. A large sunshade has now been ordered, and it is scheduled for installation over the slide in early July. Another challenge has been keeping the popular spray pad operational. Heavy use and a bit of unfortunate littering has placed unexpected extra demands on the water pump and filtration system, and Public Works personnel have worked hard to overcome the challenges so that the spray pad can be enjoyed by everyone. Downtown Fayetteville will be full of summertime fun in July and August City of Fayetteville residents and guests can look forward to a full slate of good times happening Downtown in the months of July and August. These include four Fitness in the Park events, three movie nights, two Brightmoor Healthcare Amphitheater concerts, one jazz festival and one fire truck pull competition. Leading the pack is the July 8 Screen on the Green: “Turning Red”, featuring a free showing of the brand-new Pixar movie. A July 22 Screen on the Green will feature “Cruella,” and another #Throwback Thursday Movie Night will feature “Dumb & Dumber” on August 25.
